Enhancing Online Security With Image-Based Captchas, Brian M. Powell
Enhancing Online Security With Image-Based Captchas, Brian M. Powell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Given the data loss, productivity, and financial risks posed by security breaches, there is a great need to protect online systems from automated attacks. Completely Automated Public Turing Tests to Tell Computers and Humans Apart, known as CAPTCHAs, are commonly used as one layer in providing online security. These tests are intended to be easily solvable by legitimate human users while being challenging for automated attackers to successfully complete. Traditionally, CAPTCHAs have asked users to perform tasks based on text recognition or categorization of discrete images to prove whether or not they are legitimate human users. Over time, the efficacy …
The Semantics Of Spanish Compounding: An Analysis Of Nn Compounds In The Parallel Architecture, Luis Miguel Toquero Perez
The Semantics Of Spanish Compounding: An Analysis Of Nn Compounds In The Parallel Architecture, Luis Miguel Toquero Perez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Noun-Noun compounds (NN) are a concatenation of two nouns that function as a single unit both morphosyntactically and semantically. One of the main challenges that a study of NN compounding faces is their semantics, and more precisely, identifying the implied semantic relations that hold between the two elements. One of the most recent frameworks that has been proposed to account for the semantic relations between the modifier and head in NN compounds is Jackendoff's (2009, 2016) basic functions model within the Parallel Architecture framework. In this model, a semantic relation between the head and modifier is established by using an …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which the domain specific self-efficacies manifest themselves in the teaching of writing. A teachers' sense of efficacy is a multidimensional construct and is a significant construct in how teachers' view themselves as writers and teachers of writing. This study explored how five elementary classroom teachers viewed these domain specific self-efficacies and the ways in which the various sources of efficacy influenced their self-efficacy as writers and teachers of writing. The researcher collected and analyzed domain specific self-efficacy scales and individual interviews to capture the experiences of these teachers. There …

What The Frost Killed, Allison Semele Blair
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
What the Frost Killed is the culmination of two years spent memorializing the dead plants and animals of my immediate surroundings. Primarily focusing on birds who die as a result of human activity, I seek to pay attention to and elevate the individual victims of a systemic problem. Inspired by Ancient Greek tragedy, I engage with the ethical dilemmas inherent in our collective actions to express the strange, beauty of these unsung deaths.;My thesis body of work draws on a decade of research exploring the intersection between political history and ancient tragic literature. As I studied these stories written in …
Optimal Anteroposterior Position Of Maxillary Incisors In Caucasian Males Viewed From A Smiling Profile, Amer Shammaa
Optimal Anteroposterior Position Of Maxillary Incisors In Caucasian Males Viewed From A Smiling Profile, Amer Shammaa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background and Objectives: Anteroposterior (AP) position of the maxillary incisors affects the harmony of a facial profile. Different methods have been suggested to evaluate the maxillary incisor AP position, including cephalometric analysis and soft-tissue analysis. Andrews suggested using a lateral smiling profile to evaluate the AP position of the maxillary incisors. The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal AP position of maxillary incisors in Caucasian males using Glabella Vertical (GV), a coronal plane tangent to soft tissue Glabella, as a reference line. In addition, an attempt was made to determine if there are differences in judged facial …
Nonword Repetition Task To Evaluate Syllable Stress As A Motor Class, Emily R. Cobun
Nonword Repetition Task To Evaluate Syllable Stress As A Motor Class, Emily R. Cobun
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current speech therapy methods and theories are based on generalized motor program (GMP) theory (Schmidt, 1975). GMP theory states a single GMP, or motor program, directs multiple movements of speech (Maas et al., 2008). Additionally, GMP theory asserts these similar muscle movements are part of the same motor class, which allows a GMP to direct performance on novel, untrained patterns of movements (i.e., what is termed "transfer performance"; Chamberlin & Magill, 1992; Schmidt, 1975). Alternatively, movements outside of a learned motor class will be more difficult to perform because a different GMP is controlling these movements. Currently, syllable stress patterns …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis analyzes the Life of Christina of Markyate to illustrate how the pages of Christina's manuscript contain keys to a better understanding of issues of sex, gender, and religion in the Middle Ages, especially in regards of how space, enclosure, and spiritual guidance were used by medieval religious people to further their devotional practices. By explicating the nature of Christina's enclosure experiences, we see how her life serves as an example of the importance of spiritual guidance in medieval lives. Christina's recorded experience of enclosure can help us grasp the significant role that space played in helping advance opportunities …

Open-Access Crime Maps As Digital Rhetoric And Crime Reporting In Chicago: Using New Aesthetic Overlaps To Change Journalism And Citizen Interaction, Aaron Geiger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
When data mining meets the rhetoric of maps and crowdsourcing in the age of digital journalism, we can use the abundance of data to change, modify or reinforce particular reporting behaviors or journalism policies. We also live in an age of overlapping boundaries of technologies, algorithms and human interfaces---it is within these overlaps that we find anomalies, "glitches", and digital errata that can expose different perceptions of the same artifacts and algorithms. The overlapping of the heterogeneous network, as James Bridle calls it, is known as The New Aesthetic. It is not a movement, but "a series of artifacts ... …
Development Of An Ammonia Reduction After-Treatment Systems For Stoichiometric Natural Gas Engines, Saroj Pradhan
Development Of An Ammonia Reduction After-Treatment Systems For Stoichiometric Natural Gas Engines, Saroj Pradhan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three-way catalyst (TWC) equipped stoichiometric natural gas vehicles have proven to be an effective alternative fuel strategy that shows significant low NOx emissions characteristics. However, recent studies have shown the TWC activity to contribute to elevated levels of tailpipe ammonia (NH 3) emissions. Although a non-regulated pollutant, ammonia is a potent pre-cursor to ambient secondary PM formation. Ammonia is an inevitable byproduct of fuel rich operation that results in lowest NOx slip through the TWC after-treatment system.;The main objective of the study is to develop a passive Ammonia Reduction Catalyst (passive-ARC) based NH3 reduction strategy that results in an overall …

"Our Own Flesh And Blood?": Delaware Indians And Moravians In The Eighteenth-Century Ohio Country., Jennifer L. Miller
"Our Own Flesh And Blood?": Delaware Indians And Moravians In The Eighteenth-Century Ohio Country., Jennifer L. Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Between 1740 and 1790, Moravians and Delaware Indians fostered a spiritual and political alliance even as they endured a series of internal divisions and external threats. Although the relationship withstood the Seven Years’ War, the American Revolution splintered both groups and estranged them from their neighbors. When the Revolution ushered in a radical new democracy that undermined the authority of eastern leaders, the Moravians proved powerless to control white settlers who enforced their own vision of justice against Native peoples. The Moravian-Delaware partnership unraveled as the dramatic upheaval of the American Revolution fundamentally reshaped the political landscape and rendered the …
Buying Thebes: Promoting A Cultural Commonwealth In Contemporary Anglophone Adaptations Of Greek Tragedy, Phillip Zapkin
Buying Thebes: Promoting A Cultural Commonwealth In Contemporary Anglophone Adaptations Of Greek Tragedy, Phillip Zapkin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This project argues that theatrical adaptations of Greek tragedy exemplify the functioning of a cosmopolitan cultural commonwealth. Dramatists like Christine Evans, Colin Teevan, David Greig, Marina Carr, Femi Osofisan, Moira Buffini, and Yael Farber enact intercultural collaborations to reshape material from a cultural common and make that material meaningful for contemporary audiences. This collaborative ethos of drawing from shared source material undermines the logic of neoliberal late capitalism, which is premised on property ownership and individualist competition. "Buying Thebes" contributes to adaptation studies scholarship by theorizing a political economy of adaptation, combining both a formal reading of adaptation as an …

Teaching Without A Net: Experiencing Mandatory Curriculum Change, Stephen Ross Higgins
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation reports a qualitative study that explored the reconstructed narratives of 4 West Virginia 7th grade social studies teachers. A methodology informed by narrative inquiry guided the research design, including the methods for data collection and data analysis. Two questions served as guideposts throughout the research process: What do the stories of the participants tell us about the ways in which teachers engage as developers of curriculum when curriculum change is mandated? In what ways did their stories of implementing a mandated change impact their professional identities? To explore these questions, I conducted 3 semi-structured interviews with each participant. …
The Influence Of Police Profanity On Public Perception Of Excessive Force, Christina Patton
The Influence Of Police Profanity On Public Perception Of Excessive Force, Christina Patton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous research has examined elements of police performance impacting community policing and police-citizen relationships, but no study has considered the impact of police use of profanity during arrest on public rating of force. Police profanity may negatively bias police-citizen interactions, and this bias could shape later interactions with community members, decrease the quality of police-community relations, or even result in public outcry over excessive use of force (White, Cox, & Baseheart, 1994). Further, profanity increases recipient physiological arousal in some settings (LaPointe, 2006) and aggressive behavior, which may exacerbate risk to the officer during an arrest and lead to more …
Metaphors Of Reading: Cognition And Embodiment In Contemporary Metafiction, Amanda L. Bailey
Metaphors Of Reading: Cognition And Embodiment In Contemporary Metafiction, Amanda L. Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This project brings together methodologies from sensory and cognitive approaches to literature to posit that Conceptual Metaphors of Readings mediate the experience of readers with fiction and provide an organizing framework for scholars and readers alike to consider the diverse sensory and cognitive phenomena that are used to describe the experience of reading. These conceptual metaphors are culturally and historically developed and can be used in combination with each other by authors to achieve desired effects on readers; however, there are clear patterns in metaphor blends. I demonstrate the robustness of this framework by analyzing metafictional readers, scenes of reading, …

This study of European settlers' political struggles encompasses a ten-year period (1902-12) during which the foundations of Kenya's modern politics were established. The dissertation follows political contestation originating from the East Africa Protectorate's small European settler community during the administrations of four commissioners/governors. The politics of this period involved varied individuals and organizations that sought to move the colonial state in the direction of policies European politicians advocated in such critical areas as land and labor, the administration of justice, and in the system of government that applied to them and other residents of the protectorate. The settler politicians pushed …
