Cooperative Learning In Rural Mathematics Classrooms: Interactions Of Instructional Coaching, And Achievement, Joanna Burt-Kinderman
Cooperative Learning In Rural Mathematics Classrooms: Interactions Of Instructional Coaching, And Achievement, Joanna Burt-Kinderman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cooperative learning in school mathematics has been widely studied. However, variation is found in efficacy of this approach. This study examines the particular fit of a cooperative learning approach in rural mathematics classrooms. Research centers on two rural sixth-grade mathematics classrooms whose teachers have had varying degrees of experience in and support for a student-centered cooperative approach to mathematics. This study examines the overall effect of cooperative learning in this setting, then searches for differences in outcomes that may correlate with differences in experience, support, and teacher training in cooperative learning processes. Throughout the school year, benchmark measures of students' …
The Modeling And Stability Analysis Of Humans Balancing An Inverted Pendulum, Yaohui Ding
The Modeling And Stability Analysis Of Humans Balancing An Inverted Pendulum, Yaohui Ding
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The control of an inverted pendulum is a classical problem in dynamics and control theory. Without active control, the inverted pendulum by itself is inherently unstable, thus serving as an ideal platform for control algorithms design and testing. This study utilizes an inverted pendulum setup to investigate the characteristics of manual control in executing a single-axial compensatory task. An inverted pendulum with sliding base on a single-axial rail was built for this purpose. Human subjects were asked to stabilize the pendulum by sliding the base on the rail. To mathematically quantify the characteristics of human manual control, a quasi-linear lead-lag …
Changing Displays Of Assyrian Art In Nineteenth Century England, Clayton W. Kindred
Changing Displays Of Assyrian Art In Nineteenth Century England, Clayton W. Kindred
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 1846, the British polymath Austen Henry Layard began archaeological excavations in the mounds of ancient Assyria, approximately twenty miles south of the modern day city of Mosul, Iraq. Uncovering artifacts almost immediately, Layard's discoveries were sent to the British Museum, where they were first displayed in 1847. Academic research on this scenario has recently experienced a great resurgence, with works such as Frederick Bohrer's seminal, Orientalism and Visual Culture, and Shawn Malley's thorough, From Archaeology to Spectacle in Victorian Britain, exploring the vast social and political connections that existed between Layard, the British Museum and the British State. But, …
Does Cultural Self-Awareness Alter Instructional Design Decisions?, Antoinette Hando
Does Cultural Self-Awareness Alter Instructional Design Decisions?, Antoinette Hando
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This project looks at the influence background culture has on instructional designers. Current research supports the hypothesis that background culture affects learning preferences. This study approaches cultural background from the instructional designers' point of view. Using Hofstede's Model of Cultural Dimensions as a tool for understanding how culture influences our expectations in a classroom setting a survey was sent to subjects from various cultures to see if their design style correlated to the ranking given by Hofstede. The results were that background culture influenced the experiences of the participants and could be related to Hofstede's Model of Cultural Dimensions.
Fashion Meets Twitter: Does The Source Matter? Perceived Message Credibility, Interactivity And Purchase Intention, Yijia Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Through an online survey, this study explored the perceived source credibility of fashion industry Twitter messages with varying message sources (the brand itself, celebrity endorser, friend/acquaintance). Online interactivity and purchase intention of potential customers were also assessed to examine if a particular message source and its credibility increase the likelihood of online engagement with the message and customers' intention to purchase.;Findings indicate that of all source types, brands were perceived as most credible overall, as well as on dimensions of expertise, character, and attractiveness. Furthermore, there was a higher probability of respondents searching for additional information based on a tweet …
Belarus's National Narratives And Representation Of The Grand Duchy Of Lithuania, Jevgenijs Rjascenko
Belarus's National Narratives And Representation Of The Grand Duchy Of Lithuania, Jevgenijs Rjascenko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In its theoretical framework this thesis relies on the discussion of the existing approaches towards the study of nationalism such as the perennialist, the modernist/constructivist and the ethno-symbolist. The ethno-symbolist approach by Anthony D. Smith, however, is chosen as the most appropriate for examining Belarus's nation-building process and therefore, its ability to explain different expressions of Belarus's national narratives is emphasized. The empirical discussion of Belarus's post-independence nation-building process explains the peculiarity of the Belarusian case in which the official national narrative coexists with the alternative national narrative in Belarus's public sphere. The research question, however, is centered on the …
An Automated Framework For Problem Report Triage In Large-Scale Open Source Problem Repositories, Sean K. Banerjee
An Automated Framework For Problem Report Triage In Large-Scale Open Source Problem Repositories, Sean K. Banerjee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Issue tracking systems play a critical role in the management and maintenance of software. Developers and users are allowed to submit reports pertaining to observed problems. A human triager must read through each newly submitted report, and determine if it describes an unreported issue (Primary) or an existing issue (Duplicate). If the quality of the report is deemed to be poor (Incomplete), describing an issue with a different software (Invalid), irreproducible (Worksforme), or beyond the scope of the project (Wontfix) it is annotated with the appropriate label. If the report is deemed to describe a new problem, it is assigned …
Aircraft Abnormal Conditions Detection, Identification, And Evaluation Using Innate And Adaptive Immune Systems Interaction, Dia Al Azzawi
Aircraft Abnormal Conditions Detection, Identification, And Evaluation Using Innate And Adaptive Immune Systems Interaction, Dia Al Azzawi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Abnormal flight conditions play a major role in aircraft accidents frequently causing loss of control. To ensure aircraft operation safety in all situations, intelligent system monitoring and adaptation must rely on accurately detecting the presence of abnormal conditions as soon as they take place, identifying their root cause(s), estimating their nature and severity, and predicting their impact on the flight envelope.;Due to the complexity and multidimensionality of the aircraft system under abnormal conditions, these requirements are extremely difficult to satisfy using existing analytical and/or statistical approaches. Moreover, current methodologies have addressed only isolated classes of abnormal conditions and a reduced …
The Germs Inside Me: Pediatric Patients' Conceptualization Of Illness And Regulation Of Emotions During Hospitalization, Sarah E. Buck
The Germs Inside Me: Pediatric Patients' Conceptualization Of Illness And Regulation Of Emotions During Hospitalization, Sarah E. Buck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The transition into a medical setting can be difficult for children under the age of 18. Previous research has identified a child's capacity to construct accurate representations of illness, in addition to the construction and application of adaptive strategies to modify emotional arousal, as significant predictors of successful adjustment to a medical environment. Preexisting research has neglected to investigate the constructs of illness conceptualization and regulatory systems of emotions. Using a sample of 26 pediatric patients and 26 adult informants, the current study explored the complex relationship between emotional regulation and the conceptualization of illness among children, from the ages …

Drawing Borders: The Political And Symbolic Importance Of The United States In The Creation Of Czechoslovakia, Samantha Borgeson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 2011, a statue of Woodrow Wilson, based on the original erected in 1928, was re-installed at Woodrow Wilson Train Station in the capital of the Czech Republic. The original statue commemorated Wilson's involvement in the creation of interwar Czechoslovakia, and his support for its independence. It also symbolized the democratic ideals which brought the two nations together following the Great War. Woodrow Wilson played a major part in the history and memory of Czechs during their formative years of their state following World War I, a role which has not been forgotten. Today the Wilson statue is the site …
Three Essays On Institutional Change, Kathleen M. Sheehan
Three Essays On Institutional Change, Kathleen M. Sheehan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of three essays which empirically investigate different avenues of institutional change. The introduction opens with a discussion of the topics explored in the three essays and provides an overview of important results from each essay. Essay one is a joint effort with Dr. Andrew Young. In this essay, we examine how foreign aid affects institutional change using a panel of aid recipient countries and multiple measures of institutions. In essay two, I examine how globalization affects informal institutions, measured by the level of culture in a country. The final essay explores if there are spatial spillovers from …
Conditional Clauses, Meghan Olson
Conditional Clauses, Meghan Olson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My MFA written thesis addresses work completed and shown in a thesis exhibition at West Virginia University as well as significant influences to my studio process. While my stated focus is printmaking, the work presented in the exhibition consisted of six sculptural and installation pieces. This thesis, along with the supporting exhibition, will address my investigations into probing ordinary materials for juxtapositions and arrangements that lend themselves towards a conditional, not absolute, meaning. The work is created from an impulse to put everyday materials together in order to observe subtle relationships that ultimately transcend the ordinary and question what is …
Human Interaction Recognition With Audio And Visual Cues, Ranya Almohsen
Human Interaction Recognition With Audio And Visual Cues, Ranya Almohsen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The automated recognition of human activities from video is a fundamental problem with applications in several areas, ranging from video surveillance, and robotics, to smart healthcare, and multimedia indexing and retrieval, just to mention a few. However, the pervasive diffusion of cameras capable of recording audio also makes available to those applications a complementary modality. Despite the sizable progress made in the area of modeling and recognizing group activities, and actions performed by people in isolation from video, the availability of audio cues has rarely being leveraged. This is even more so in the area of modeling and recognizing binary …
Effects Of Long-Term Phonological Knowledge On Learning New Words, Elizabeth S. Smith
Effects Of Long-Term Phonological Knowledge On Learning New Words, Elizabeth S. Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Language learning has been attributed to multiple aspects of cognition; two primary components are phonological short-term memory and long-term knowledge. Short-term memory is responsible for the temporary storage and rehearsal of new information, and long-term knowledge is responsible for storing information gained throughout the lifetime. If one or both of these areas are found to be deficient, language impairments may be present. Although the role of short-term memory and long-term knowledge has been identified as important, their relative contributions to different language processes are not completely understood. This study used a novel within-subjects approach to examine the impact of long-term …

Between The Local And The National: The Free Territory Of Trieste, "Italianita," And The Politics Of Identity From The Second World War To The Osimo Treaty, Fabio Capano
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the politicized use of the city of Trieste and its surrounding territory, a cosmopolitan municipality that became the theatre of one of the most heated disputes of the early Cold War years. Scholars have extensively studied the diplomatic dimension of the confrontation between Italy and former Yugoslavia, yet many have largely neglected the significance of the broader political process that led to the Osimo Treaty of 1975, the final settlement of Italy's eastern border. This dissertation reaffirms the importance of the Triestine territory as a contested socio-political space that experienced the logic of both Cold War containment …
Mothers' Adaptation To Caring For A New Baby, Darcey N. Powell
Mothers' Adaptation To Caring For A New Baby, Darcey N. Powell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
To date, most research on parents' adjustment after adding a new baby to their family unit has focused on mothers' initial transition to parenthood. This past research has examined changes in mothers' marital satisfaction and perceived well-being across the transition, and has compared their prenatal expectations to their postnatal experiences. This project assessed first-time and experienced mothers' stress and satisfaction associated with parenting, their adjustment to competing demands, and their perceived well-being longitudinally before and after the birth of a baby. Additionally, how maternal and child-related variables influenced the trajectory of mothers' postnatal adaptation was assessed. These variables included mothers' …
"I Feel That Our House Is The Future As Well As The Past": Architecture, Monumentality And Form In The Modernist Novel, Harrington Weihl
"I Feel That Our House Is The Future As Well As The Past": Architecture, Monumentality And Form In The Modernist Novel, Harrington Weihl
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Questions of how literary modernism and literary realism can be distinguished from one another, particularly in the transitional period at the beginning of the twentieth century, are central concerns in the study of literature. I argue here that in E.M. Forster's 1913 novel Howards End, the 'monumentality' of the titular house is the key to its inclusion in the modernist canon. This monumentality is incomplete, I claim, and as such formally replicates the impossibility of comprehending or representing modern life. I conclude with a similar reading of Elizabeth Bowen's 1929 novel The Last September in order to demonstrate that this …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Autonomous Formation Flight is a key approach for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing traffic in future high density airspace. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) have made it possible for the physical demonstration and validation of autonomous formation flight concepts inexpensively and eliminates the flight risk to human pilots. This thesis discusses the design, implementation, and flight testing of three different formation flight control methods, Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID); Fuzzy Logic (FL); and NonLinear Dynamic Inversion (NLDI), and their respective performance behavior. Experimental results show achievable autonomous formation flight and performance quality with a pair of low-cost unmanned research fixed …
Corridos, Drugs, And Violence: An Analysis Of Mexican Drug Ballads, Kristen L. Richmond
Corridos, Drugs, And Violence: An Analysis Of Mexican Drug Ballads, Kristen L. Richmond
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Narcocorridos, or Mexican drug ballads, are a contemporary form of the corrido connected to banda music in the northern part of Mexico and along the border in the United States. The narcocorrido is sometimes compared to gangsta rap due to its exciting narratives of drug traffickers who rose above poor socio-economic conditions to become powerful and wealthy figures in the drug trade. The stories reflected in Mexican drug ballads highlight the lifestyle of drug lords and aspects of the drug trade that are imbued with violence. Narcocorrido lyrics focus on misfortunes and death while referencing events related to illegal criminal …
L'Intention Mal Comprise : Les Meres Indignes De La Comtesse De Segur, Kristina Kiisk
L'Intention Mal Comprise : Les Meres Indignes De La Comtesse De Segur, Kristina Kiisk
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sophie de Segur is a very well-known 19th century French children's author. Her books were and are still widely read and appreciated by children. However, she has been often criticized by literary scholars of the 20th and 21st century due to the fact that there is a lot of violence present in her novels. In addition, it has been suggested that her only goal was to educate and moralize her young readers. This opinion, however, reduces the multifaceted work of the comtesse to a purely didactic literature and we fail to recognize that her writing suggests a much deeper significance …
Raising Soviets On Imported Goods. Socialist Realism In Estonian Secondary Education, Helen Saask
Raising Soviets On Imported Goods. Socialist Realism In Estonian Secondary Education, Helen Saask
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines how the political leadership of the Soviet Union tried to cultivate its desired values and principles among the people of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. It illuminates one aspect of all the ideologically charged activities, and looks at Soviet Estonian schools through the lens of compulsory reading --- how were socialist realist cultural goods used to promote Sovietization in Estonian secondary schools? Moreover, the study tries to evaluate to what degree the propagandistic intention was realized in literature lessons. Emphasis lies on exploring traces of the so-called 'double-thinking,' the notion that Estonians had the tendency to separate …
The Impact Of Religion On Minority Identity And Community: A Case Study Of Russian Orthodoxy And The Russian Minority In Estonia, Elizabeth Cleary
The Impact Of Religion On Minority Identity And Community: A Case Study Of Russian Orthodoxy And The Russian Minority In Estonia, Elizabeth Cleary
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Minority groups and their integration and inclusion into the greater society are important political and sociological concerns for many states. This is especially true for the states that more recently regained their independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The realm of religion has remained largely untapped as an area in which minority identity can be cultivated and expressed or used as a platform towards productively integrating or isolating minority members.;This thesis seeks to contribute to the scholarship on this underdeveloped topic of how religion, minority identity, and issues of integration intersect. Its key questions are a) whether religion …
Exploring A Prefigurative Culture In The Immigrant Family: A Look At The Sociolinguistic Impact Of Children On The Immigrant Parent, Melissa Katherine Mcintosh
Exploring A Prefigurative Culture In The Immigrant Family: A Look At The Sociolinguistic Impact Of Children On The Immigrant Parent, Melissa Katherine Mcintosh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2010), 12.9% of the population in the United States is that of immigrants. With this increase in recent immigration, the population of limited English speakers has also increased which includes both children and adults. While much research has been done in terms of how bilingualism and biculturalism have impacted the children within immigrant families, very few studies have focused on the parents and how the children's English language learning and acculturation have impacted their own English learning and acculturation. This study was intended to fill that lack of research by exploring the sociolinguistic impact …
Human Action Recognition In Still Images, Biyun Lai
Human Action Recognition In Still Images, Biyun Lai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recently still image-based human action recognition has become an active research topic in computer vision and pattern recognition. It focuses on identifying a person's action or behavior from a single image. Unlike the traditional action recognition approaches where videos or image sequences are used, a still image contains no temporal information for action characterization. It is more challenging to perform still image-based action recognition than the video-based, given the limited source of information as well as the cluttered background for images collected from the Internet.;Based on the emerging research in recent years, we dig into all possible cues from a …
Trauma, Memory And Victimhood: Estonia And The Holocaust, 1998-2012, Paul Oliver Stocker
Trauma, Memory And Victimhood: Estonia And The Holocaust, 1998-2012, Paul Oliver Stocker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Memory of the traumatic Soviet past has both dominated the politics of history in Estonia and been a key determining factor in building a national post-Soviet European identity. As a result, the Holocaust in Estonia has played a less substantial role in both scholarship, and public debate, specifically regarding the nature of local participation in the elimination of Jewish life in Estonia. The subject was catapulted onto the national political agenda in alignment with integration to both NATO and the EU, which clearly viewed Estonia's coming to terms with the event as a matter of importance upon its arrival into …

Parents' Perspectives, Observations, And Interpretations Of: Cancer-Related Fatigue And How The Symptom Shapes Their Child's Day-To-Day Quality Of Life, Tina Antill Keener
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fatigue is a common and distressing symptom of childhood cancer that is often viewed as an inevitable part of cancer treatment and under assessed in clinical practice. Yet, cancer-related fatigue can disrupt normal childhood development and family functioning, as well as, signal serious complications of cancer and its treatment. Little is known about fatigue and quality of life among children undergoing cancer treatment in outpatient settings. This qualitative descriptive study explored parents' observations and interpretations of cancer-related fatigue and how it shaped their child's day-to-day quality of life during cancer treatment. Eleven participant interviews were gathered from parents of children …
The Social Support For International Graduate Students To Obtain Academic Success, Ping He
The Social Support For International Graduate Students To Obtain Academic Success, Ping He
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous studies suggest that international graduate students' academic success is significantly associated with the average grade point (GPA), and this measure is closely related with international graduate students' received academic and financial supports. However, international graduate students' academic success can involve a multidimensional measurement besides the average grade point (GPA). Hence, the current study explored the correlation between international graduate students' perceived social support and perceived academic success from an inclusive perspective. The perceived social support included the categories of academic support, financial support, emotional support and spiritual support. The perceived academic success included the aspects of knowledge learning, research …
