Characterization Of Pulmonary Obstruction, Airway Inflammation, And Hyperreactivity In Relation To Pulmonary Dendritic Cells In A Guinea-Pig Model Of Asthma., Tracey Elaine Lawrence

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by reversible airway obstruction and nonspecific airway hyperreactivity. Recent evidence suggests that inflammation is a critical feature in the pathogenesis of asthma. Central to the genesis of inflammation is the presentation of antigens to T lymphocytes. Dendritic cells (DC) are antigen presenting cells that activate T lymphocytes thought to play a critical role in stimulating antigen-induced airway inflammation and hyperreactivity in asthma. Even though the guinea pig is commonly used as an animal model of asthma, the role of pulmonary DC in the pathogenesis of asthma has not been investigated. Therefore, this study …

Stress, Social Support, And Burnout In Nursing Home Staff., Lynn Marie Northrop Jan 1996

Stress, Social Support, And Burnout In Nursing Home Staff., Lynn Marie Northrop

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Burnout represents a danger to the mental and physical health of human-service workers. Burnout often diminishes the quality and efficiency of service provided by workers and thus represents a danger to service recipients and a cost to employers. Repeated studies suggest that workers who report higher levels of job stress and lower levels of social support are more likely to report higher levels of burnout. Nursing home staff are subject to considerable occupational stress and report high levels of burnout. The extant literature does not address the relations between stress, support, and burnout in these workers. In the present study …

The purpose of this research is to study the cellular mechanisms responsible for the specific supersensitivity to norepinephrine seen in the superior mesenteric vasculature of Dahl salt-sensitive (DS) rats prior to and early in the development of hypertension. It is hypothesized that the vascular smooth muscle of DS rats on a high salt diet for five days or three weeks possess an abnormality at the level of the {dollar}\\alpha\\sb1{dollar}-adrenoceptor or in the transduction process activated after adrenoceptor occupation. The vasoconstrictor response to various agonists was studied in isolated perfused superior mesenteric arterial vasculature from DS rats fed a high salt …

Correlation Of In-Facepiece Sampling Methods Using A Simulated Health-Care Workplace Test., Christopher Charles Coffey Jan 1996

Correlation Of In-Facepiece Sampling Methods Using A Simulated Health-Care Workplace Test., Christopher Charles Coffey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For a number of years, it was assumed that the protection measured during a laboratory fit test was indicative of the protection provided by the respirator during actual use in the workplace. Beginning in the early 1980's, workplace protection factor studies were conducted to validate this assumption. These studies indicated that quantitative fit test results did not correlate with actual workplace protection factors. A fit test that indicates the degree of exposure is especially important when Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) exposures are involved. This study tested the correlation of fit factors to the subject's actual exposure using biological sampling. Six quantitative …

The Process Of Home-Based Early Intervention: A Case Study Of A Family Educator In An Appalachian Community., Carole Ann Gnatuk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many parents need support and intervention from the community to realize their essential role as their young children's primary teachers. Home visitation is one type of family support program that supplies that need. Although some measurable outcomes for children and parents in such programs have been noted, the dynamics of the action between the catalyst for development, the family educator, and family members cannot be measured quantitatively. Programming and funding decisions can be made with more accuracy if the rich human interactions are systematically narrated and thus appreciated as essential data. The research literature contains few qualitative studies focusing on …
