Earnings, Health, Safety, And Welfare Of Bituminous Coal Miners Since Theencouragement Of Mechanization By The United Mine Workers Of America., John Peter David

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The United Mine Workers of America began encouraging mechanization and concentration in the coal mining industry immediately after the end of World War II. The coal industry was in danger of losing primary markets, such as home heating and the railroads, and in order to obtain new markets, a competitive relationship with other basic fuels had to be assured. The various actions that the union encouraged were a restructuring of the industry so as to create more efficient and concentrated production units; higher wage rates and mine mechanization so as to assist the industry in obtaining greater volume at lower …

It was the purpose of this investigation to study the use of concrete and abstract stimuli in the development of perceptual abilities of disadvantaged five year old children. Hypotheses to be tested were (1) that subjects who were presented a curriculum of concrete stimuli initially and progressing to stimuli if abstraction would have greater perceptual development than those subjects who were presented a curriculum of abstract stimuli, and (2) that subjects receiving curricula of concrete and abstract stimuli would have greater perceptual development than subjects serving as the Control Group. Subjects (N=44) were enrolled in Head Start and received the …

Optimization Of An Electromagnetic 'Through-The-Earth' Communication System., Gene Edward Layman Jan 1972

Optimization Of An Electromagnetic 'Through-The-Earth' Communication System., Gene Edward Layman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This document reports a research effort directed at compiling the field theory, noise theory, and communication theory necessary to perform systems analysis and optimization of an electromagnetic communication system for use within a mine. The field equations and power transfer between loops placed in an infinite, homogeneous, lossy medium is examined and relationships between parameters are determined that provide optimum transfer of signal power. This analysis is extended to cover the case of an infinite, homogeneous, lossy half-space used to model the actual mining situation. Approximate solutions are found to greatly simplify systems analysis. Noise, bandwidth, false alarm rate, missed …

Possession of the knowledge that certain personality traits either influence or do not influence the probability of conflict lead6ing to a strike would greatly aid the respective organizations in the formulation of their negotiation team. With the variety of factors which influence the strike probability, even a single …

A Taxonomic Study Of The Ericaceae Of The Southern Appalachian Highlands., Doyle Stewart Blauch Jan 1970

A Taxonomic Study Of The Ericaceae Of The Southern Appalachian Highlands., Doyle Stewart Blauch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Southern Appalachian Highlands represent a unique geographical region in which to study plants. The Ericaceae, especially well developed in this region, are a family of plants which have long been of interest to man. At the present time there exists no adequate treatment of the Ericaceae of this particular area. The present study, based mainly upon examination of herbarium specimens and supplemented by studies in the field, attempts to correlate these findings with all the scattered published information concerning the genera of this family in the Southern Appalachians. More than 12,000 sheets of specimens from twenty-nine herbaria were examined …

An Analysis Of The Transformation Process Affecting The Stated Instructional Goals Of The West Virginia University School Of Nursing, Charles Joseph Staropoli

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study will be to identify and explain the conceptual syndrome operating in the transformation by which the stated instructional goals, as established by the School of Nursing at West Virginia University, become the real instructional goals as pursued by the teaching staff of the School of Nursing. This study will not establish that these concepts caused the transformation, but will only identify the concepts through inductive analysis of the data. The identification of these concepts and their subsequent operationalization is the necessary first step if productive experimental research into the causality of goal transformation is to …
