Subjective And Ideal Age In Middle-Aged And Older Adults., Keith T. Jones Jan 1997

Subjective And Ideal Age In Middle-Aged And Older Adults., Keith T. Jones

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Subjective and ideal age were studied in middle-aged and older adults. Subjective age (SA), or how old a person perceives him- or herself to be, has been studied in older adults for over 40 years. Yet, many questions remain concerning what variables contribute to SA, the meaning of SA, and age-group and gender differences in SA. Ideal age (IA), or the age that one perceives to be ideal, has been studied considerably less than SA, and the same questions exist with respect to it. In a partial replication of Jones and Shaw (1996), 40 middle-aged (ages 40-59) and 40 older …

The Development Of A Coaching Education Curriculum Framework Outlining The Learning Outcomes Coaches Are To Be Taught To Pursue Through Interscholastic Athletics., A Keith Dils

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coaches and administrators involved in athletics in the educational milieu proclaim that sport is an integral part of the educational process. The National Federation of State High School Associations maintains that athletics is "educational" (Jable, 1986). However, positive outcomes are not inevitable and in fact negative outcomes often occur. Because the mandates for the "educational" use of athletics consist of general and undefined values (e.g., collapsing the concept of sportsmanship into one undefined value) they are not conducive to making values development through sport an attainable goal (Wandzilak & Potter, 1986). Also, these mandates for the "educational" use of sport …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The mental state, physical being and social/emotional portion of the learner has been part of the education process since 427 B.C. Although the spiritual dimension has not received much attention in the education literature, it seems as if more and more educators are becoming interested in the phenomenon as we head into the 21st century. Educators seemingly enjoy talking about the dimension and wish to include such a perspective in the curricula, but this researcher did not discovered a spirituality measurement in the field of education existing in the literature. Related scales that existed correlated spirituality with religiosity. The purpose …

Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield Jan 1996

Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Published during the years that mark the English working-class movement known as Chartism, Thomas Carlyle's French Revolution (1837), Charles Dickens' Barnaby Rudge (1841), and Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton (1848) all present a picture of social revolt. The scenes depicted in these narratives (all of which are based upon historical events--respectively, the French Revolution, the 1780 Gordon Riots in London, and the Chartist rebellion after the failure of the first petition in 1839) strongly suggest that the act of social revolt stems not so much from radical strategies of political action as from the proliferation of a set of dangerous "passions" …
