Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Families Choosing Alternate Management Approaches., Christina Mary Lavorata
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Families Choosing Alternate Management Approaches., Christina Mary Lavorata
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affects approximately two million American school children by making them distractible and impulsive, and by causing them to have a short attention span in both scholastic and social situations. These characteristics generally result in the students receiving poor marks in academic subjects, being reprimanded frequently, and being labeled as disruptive and difficult to control by both their parents and teachers. Pediatricians and psychiatrists most often prescribe psychostimulant medications to control the syndrome, and this is an effective treatment in sixty to seventy percent of cases. There are questions about the safety of long-term use of medication, …
Self -Efficacy And Spirituality In The Recovery Process From Alcohol Dependence: A Paradox., Julie Ann States
Self -Efficacy And Spirituality In The Recovery Process From Alcohol Dependence: A Paradox., Julie Ann States
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Literature in the field of addiction supports the importance of self-efficacy and spirituality in the process of recovery from addictive disorders. However, the research on self-efficacy and spirituality among alcohol dependent individuals has not addressed the specific relationship of these constructs throughout the recovery process. The current study provides an exploration of self-efficacy and spirituality as they relate to the recovery process from alcohol dependence. Data were collected from 81 adult (over age 18) clients who sought treatment at an outpatient drug and alcohol agency. Each client met the criteria for alcohol dependence based on DSM IV criteria, and was …
Testing The River Continuum Concept: Exploring Ecological Processes In The Wheeling Creek Watershed., Deborah Ann Carpenter
Testing The River Continuum Concept: Exploring Ecological Processes In The Wheeling Creek Watershed., Deborah Ann Carpenter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The river continuum concept (RCC) asserts that the biological community in a stream system is largely regulated by geomorphological factors (Vannote, et al., 1980, 131). The concept states that community structure in natural stream systems is structured in order to capitalize on the most efficient energy utilization throughout. The objective of this research is to test the RCC in the Wheeling Creek watershed of northern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania and to compare the results with those hypothesized under the RCC. One of the strongest criticisms of the RCC is that the continuum assumes an undisturbed stream system. Anomalies found …

Departure: A Novella And Other Stories., William Matthew Carter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Departure: A Novella and Other Stories is my master’s thesis written during the fall semester of 2000. The novella and two of the stories are original works created during this time. The remaining stories were written during various fiction workshops. The stories and novella all deal with individuals coming to the precipice of a major experience in their lives. My work deals with the psychological or worldly concerns these characters must ponder in deciding whether to withdraw, act, or leap from their precipice. Some themes I explore in this work as a whole include addictions, homelessness, death, and physical, mental, …

A Comparison Of The Operating Envelopes Of Diesel-Fueled Truck Engines And Hybrid Electric Bus Engines To The Federal Testing Procedure Cycle., Nene Akunor Azu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent chassis and on-road testing of hybrid electric buses (HEBs) performed by West Virginia University demonstrated the potential of hybrid technology to be significantly fuel efficient and reduce regulated emissions and greenhouse gas output compared to buses with conventional drivetrains. All heavy-duty engines, including the engines in HEBs, need to be certified through the Federal Testing Procedure (FTP) prescribed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The operation of series HEBs with engine-generator units does not follow the behavior of the FTP, which is transient in nature. It was evident that, unlike conventional buses, HEBs were designed to operate over …

Generational Factors And Resource Availability: A Study Of The Key Components Of Social Capital Formation., Jeffrey Jay Himes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this study, we join the discourse concerning social capital and its formation. Social capital has been identified as a key ingredient to the creation of interconnected community. We theorize that access to resources plays a more prominent role than does membership in a particular age set in the production of engaged and involved community members. In our study, we categorize individuals by age set and resource level and make comparisons between groups and upon individuals among the various (5) indicators of social capital. Our analysis of the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation data implies that individuals who are resource low …

An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya
An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The term quality of life has been described as a vague entity (Grayson and Young, 1994) and conceptualizing it, has proved to be difficult. Nevertheless, understanding how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction is important because these subjective evaluations determine life adjustment and mobility behavior and is the basis of demand for public actions. Additionally, more effective social programs can be designed based on the knowledge of how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction and avoid problems that may result because the perceptions of the planners and policy makers do not always coincide with those of …
