A Force Sensor Array For Space Applications, Timothy L. Weadon
A Force Sensor Array For Space Applications, Timothy L. Weadon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The need for force feedback and spatial awareness of contact in harsh environment applications, such as space servicing, has been unsatisfied due to the inability of current sensor technology to resist environmental effects. In this work, capacitive sensors based on a porous polymer-ceramic composite structure were evaluated for potential use in future operations within robotic end-effectors, withstanding temperatures ranging from -80 °C to 120 °C and forces up to 350 kPa. A thin-film design is utilized to allow for ease of embedding, allowing sensors to be implemented into exciting robotic hardware with minimal intrusion, and protecting sensors from electron bombardment, …
The Role Of Physical Appearance In The Peer Acceptance Of Emerging Adults Undergoing Chemotherapy, Megan E. Samples
The Role Of Physical Appearance In The Peer Acceptance Of Emerging Adults Undergoing Chemotherapy, Megan E. Samples
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Peer acceptance has been shown to influence the overall social development of an individual and physical appearance has been shown to be heavily influential in the overall peer acceptance of an individual. This study considered how appearing as if undergoing treatment for cancer impacted peer acceptance. A sample of 182 emerging adults (79% female; 21% male) evaluated four types of hypothetical emerging adult peers (a healthy male, a healthy female, a male who appears to be undergoing chemotherapy, and a female who appears to be undergoing chemotherapy. Results showed that the healthy female model had significantly higher peer acceptance scores …
Investigation Of Emission Characteristics During Low Temperature Combustion Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines, Mario Velardi
Investigation Of Emission Characteristics During Low Temperature Combustion Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines, Mario Velardi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Exhaust emissions from diesel engines operating in a low temperature combustion (LTC) regime are significantly affected by fuel composition and injection strategy. The starting point of this study is a collection of data correlating injection system parameters, and fuel characteristics, to response parameters such as engine-out emissions (oxides of nitrogen (NOx), total particulate matter (TPM), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC)) and brake thermal efficiency (BTE).;The purpose of this work is to develop a statistical analysis tool to assist the emission analyst in modeling problems in which a response of interest is influenced by several variables and the objective is to …
Examining Cohabitation In Emerging Adulthood, Jenica Dawn Hughes
Examining Cohabitation In Emerging Adulthood, Jenica Dawn Hughes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cohabitation has been repeatedly linked to negative relationship outcomes like low levels of commitment and relationship quality, but much of the current literature has utilized older data sets from the 1980s or age ranges from emerging adulthood, young adulthood, and older adulthood in the same studies. Supported by life course theory, inertia theory, and selection effects theory, the current study examined cohabitation specifically within the years of 18-25 to explore how demographic variables might be linked to the tempo of relationship transitions and the length of relationships. Additionally, the current study explored the associations between tempo of relationship transitions and …
Immune Related Gene Expression Of Parasite-Resistant Sheep During A Haemonchus Contortus Infection, Karen Nicole Sommers
Immune Related Gene Expression Of Parasite-Resistant Sheep During A Haemonchus Contortus Infection, Karen Nicole Sommers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Gastrointestinal nematode parasitism is a top health concern for sheep producers worldwide as traditional means of treatment are becoming less effective. Haemonchus contortus is of particular interest because it feeds on blood, causing significant pathological problems in the host. Certain breeds of sheep, like St. Croix, are more naturally resistant to parasitism. However, the underlying mechanisms that result in resistance are not fully understood. The following two experiments evaluated qPCR differential gene expression during the first ten days of a challenge H. contortus infection from lymph node and abomasal tissues. Experiment 1 evaluated 24 St. Croix hair lambs and 24 …

An Analysis Of Marcel Breuer's Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, Szilvia Kadas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
When Marcel Breuer accepted the commission to design the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, West Virginia in 1973, he saw the opportunity to create a public space for the citizens of Clarksburg, where individuals could become one community and would feel at home. The library building was intended to fulfill the hope of the city board to bring social and cultural welfare to the citizens of Clarksburg.;My hypothesis is that Marcel Breuer created a unique and intimate public library in West Virginia by integrating his characteristically domestic design elements in a public library. This thesis will demonstrate the domestic nature of the …

Post Fatigue Changes In The Stability Of Cervical Spine, Majed M. Zreiqat
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) of the neck or cervical spine are a common problem in the modern workforce. An annual prevalence of 30% to 50% for neck pain among the general adult population was reported by the Task Force of Bone and Joint Decade on Neck Pain. Physical work demands, such as sustained static postures, sub-maximal repetitive arm exertions, and forceful arm exertions are consistently identified as possible risk factors for cervical spine MSDs. Most of these exertions induce neck muscle fatigue which may affect the stability of the cervical spine. A less stable spine can be both a cause and …

The first analytic approach, standard multiple linear regression, produced a model in which each of the predictors is statistically significant: student gender, prior math achievement, student performance on school district mathematics benchmark exams, teacher years of experience, and advanced teacher …
Addressing The Elephant In The Room: A Descriptive Analysis Of Weight-Based Harassment On College Campuses, Lynnsie Doty
Addressing The Elephant In The Room: A Descriptive Analysis Of Weight-Based Harassment On College Campuses, Lynnsie Doty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to the bullying and harassment literature, over 50 percent of adolescents reported that they were targets of harassment at least once a month. A major gap within this literature is that most of these studies focus predominantly on adolescents and none focuses on older cohorts. To date only five studies have focused on college populations, but none focus on weight specifically as a factor. Although many individuals may disagree, weight-based harassment is comparable to harassment based on race and sexual orientation and affects victims just as negatively. Therefore, it is time to address the elephant in the room and …
An Evidence Based Web Intervention To Facilitate Nurse Practitioner Participation In The Policy Making Process Related To Scope Of Practice, Toni Dichiacchio
An Evidence Based Web Intervention To Facilitate Nurse Practitioner Participation In The Policy Making Process Related To Scope Of Practice, Toni Dichiacchio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Historically nurses have been strongly engaged in the political process, however in recent decades the profession has moved away from the policy arena. Without political engagement, issues that are important to the nursing profession are not addressed timely, if at all. One such issue is that of full practice authority for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Well over 100 studies have been completed over the past 40 years showing the safe and quality care APRNs provide independently. Numerous well-respected, non-nursing organizations support the removal of state laws that impede the ability of APRNs to practice to the full extent of …

Three Essays On Institutions And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Amanda M. Mandzik
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As a region, sub-Saharan Africa lags behind the rest of the world in both human development and economic growth. However, a portion of the development literature suggests that institutions may play a role in explaining, and perhaps changing, the outcomes that are observed in these countries. Therefore, this dissertation explores how institutions have shaped and continue to shape the health and economic outcomes of this region. In Chapter 2, jointly with Andrew Young, we seek to explain the correlation between high HIV prevalence rates and the Christian share of the population that contrasts with low HIV prevalence rates observed with …

Police Officers Talking About Gun Control: A Case Study Of A Rural Sheriff's Department, Angela Sycafoose
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research examines how members of a rural police department view gun control, and the degree to which they think that gun control laws protect police officers and the public. Drawing on conclusions from interviews with twenty police officers within one local sheriff's department, three themes emerged: 1) the officers rejected gun control laws and deemed them ineffective for controlling criminal behavior; 2) the officers showed support for specific gun control measures such as, citizens obtaining concealed carry permits and expanding gun background checks; 3) the officers deemed guns to be an essential part of rural upbringing and identity. We …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Child maltreatment (e.g., physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect) remains a serious public health issue which affects an estimated 19% of victims in the United States (Fang, Brown, Florence, & Mercy, 2013; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2010), and therefore, it remains important to continue to engage in quality control of the assessment, prevention, and treatment services for parents and children who have been involved in child maltreatment. Parenting capacity assessments (PCAs) are typically ordered in these cases to offer diagnostic impressions of and treatment recommendations for the referred parent (Budd, Connell, & Clark, 2011). The …
A Streptozotocin-Induced Model Of Alzheimer's Disease In Mice With Wild-Type Human Tau, Carolyn C. Rudy
A Streptozotocin-Induced Model Of Alzheimer's Disease In Mice With Wild-Type Human Tau, Carolyn C. Rudy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for 60 to 80% of all dementias, affects over 5 million Americans, and incurs annual healthcare costs of over {dollar}200 billion (Alzheimer's Association, 2012). Hyperphosphorylation of tau, the main component of neurofibrillary tangles observed in AD, leads to deficits in cell structure and function. Because recent data suggest impairments in cerebral glucose utilization and energy metabolism play a prominent role in the pathogenesis of AD, we sought to create a mouse model that emulates the metabolic changes using intracerebroventricular infusions of streptozotocin (ICV-STZ) in transgenic mice expressing human tau. The Barnes maze, a test of spatial …

Technology is changing rapidly in this global world. A radically different delivery of nutrition information and counseling is technologically feasible in fewer than five years. With about half of girls and a quarter of boys being dissatisfied with their bodies during adolescence into young adulthood, some negative consequences including development of disordered eating, eating disorders (ED) and poor psychological well-being may increase. New methods of delivery, from social media to virtual worlds will allow health care providers (HCP) to reach and interact with patients in different cities or even countries. Simple "tweets" to online videos may have a place in …
Practical Strategies To Maximize Cockatiel Health And Broiler Chicken Performance, Amanda Leigh Foreman
Practical Strategies To Maximize Cockatiel Health And Broiler Chicken Performance, Amanda Leigh Foreman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There are various methods of processing avian diets. However, the two common methods of processing include grinding, batching, mixing, and feeding the resultant mash that is not thermally processed, extrusion processing, baking, and steam conditioning and pelleting. The method of processing utilized can greatly affect nutrient availability, therefore affecting the health and/or performance of the avian. The objective of the first study was to transition cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) that were housed in a controlled experimental setting, with a standardized transition strategy, using two different commercially available cockatiel diets that were advertised as nutritionally complete. The transition strategy consisted of gradually …

Modeling And Analysis Of Distribution System With Demand Response And Electric Vehicles In Personal And Public Transportation, Venkata Satish Kasani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The government policies and cost benefits led to the surge in penetration of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) into both public and private sectors, challenging the electric grid's potential to maintain its stability and efficiently serve the purpose. The penetration of PHEVs brings technological advancements and environmental benefits to the traditional transportation and electrical power systems. Designing of appropriate charging methods to satisfy PHEV owners helps to improve system performance and avoid transmission and distribution system expansion.;The primary objective of this thesis is to model a coordinated charging algorithm to charge maximum number of PHEVs …
Stem Cell Matrix And Cartilage Regeneration, Jingting Li
Stem Cell Matrix And Cartilage Regeneration, Jingting Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cartilage defects caused by injuries of the knee affect about 900,000 Americans annually, resulting in more than 200,000 surgical procedures. Cartilage repair remains a major challenge due to its limited healing capacity. Current cell-based therapy using autologous chondrocyte implantation has been developed for decades and promising results have been observed in clinic. However, the shortage of autologous chondrocytes and their uncertain long-term effectiveness have led researchers to find alternative solutions. Stem cells from various tissues have been shown to be potential sources of chondrocytes. Among them, synovium-derived stem cells (SDSCs) have been suggested as tissue-specific stem cells for chondrogenesis. However, …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many temperate forests in the Eastern US are young and have experienced decades of elevated inputs of acidic compounds from the atmosphere. As a result, I used the Fernow Experimental Forest Long Term Soil Productivity (LTSP) experiment near Parsons, WV to determine how ongoing acidic deposition may affect total ecosystem carbon (C) storage, stand level dynamics, and soil and foliar chemistry in a young regrowing temperate deciduous forest. I also assessed the potential for acidic deposition effects to cascade up into higher trophic levels through its effects on a soil invertebrate. The LTSP experiment is a randomized block design in …
Three Essays On Trading By Members Of Congress, Serkan Karadas
Three Essays On Trading By Members Of Congress, Serkan Karadas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My dissertation examines the information content of stock trades by members of Congress (politicians) in three separate essays. In my first essay, based on approximately 62,000 common stock transactions over the 2004--2010 period, I present evidence that past firm-level trading activity by politicians predicts future firm-level stock returns, and this prediction is stronger for the pre-recession period and for small firms. By constructing buy-minus-sell transactions-based portfolios, I document that the portfolios of Republicans outperform those of Democrats. Also, being a powerful member of Congress is associated with substantially higher abnormal returns for Republicans, but not for Democrats. Among powerful Republicans, …
Redesigning Choice Architecture For The College Selection And Application Process For High School Juniors, Lindsey Estep
Redesigning Choice Architecture For The College Selection And Application Process For High School Juniors, Lindsey Estep
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Choice architecture, a term coined in the 2008 book Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by behavioral scientist Richard H. Thaler and professor of law Cass R. Sunstein, is the belief that no choice can be neutral because the way in which a choice is presented influences the decision-maker. Designers, perfectly positioned to structure choices in both print and digital format, should equally embrace this role and handle it with great responsibility. Rather than use the power to structure choice architecture to bolster consumerism, we should instead harness the opportunity to help individuals make choices that improve their …
Country Schoolgirls: A Study Of Rural Women And The Rise Of Public Education, 1820-1914, Allyson Perry
Country Schoolgirls: A Study Of Rural Women And The Rise Of Public Education, 1820-1914, Allyson Perry
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis explores the rise of public education, its influence on rural society, and the ways that farmwomen used schooling for a variety of purposes. Throughout the nineteenth century, more opportunities for women appeared as communities in the mountainous areas of West Virginia and Pennsylvania established free, public schools. With these social developments came an attempt to balance the public's perception of women's role in rural society. Administrators charged with implementing state-wide, public education had to set boundaries on women's advancement as they reacted to the public's changing ideas of women's proper role. Confronting these ideas set forth by administrators, …

America's Lollipop Licking Tease: The Eroticization Of The Female Child In 1930s Film, Susan Jennings Lantz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the eroticization of female children in film during the 1930s as a mechanism for concealing troubling realities of the Great Depression in the United States. The repressed sexuality embedded in the plots of Post Hays Code movies featuring Shirley Temple and characters such as Stella Dallas, Dorothy Gale, and Scarlett O'Hara serve to suture over a crisis of masculinity triggered by changing roles in gender, race, and class. By attempting to invoke the image of a "little girl" in place of that of a grown woman, some films (such as Gone With the Wind, and Bright Eyes) …
Investigating Feeding Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And/Or Soy Protein Isolate To Female Pck Rats On Polycystic Kidney Disease And Related Complications, Kaitlin Hope Maditz
Investigating Feeding Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And/Or Soy Protein Isolate To Female Pck Rats On Polycystic Kidney Disease And Related Complications, Kaitlin Hope Maditz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by multiple benign cysts along the epithelial lining of the kidneys. As PKD progresses, cyst growth increases kidney volume, decreases renal function, and may eventually lead to end stage renal disease. In addition to renal manifestations, PKD patients are at risk of complications that include bone loss and polycystic liver disease (PLD). Currently, no genetic therapy or effective pharmacological treatments exist. Therefore, dietary intervention offers a potentially efficacious, cost-effective, and safe therapeutic option for PKD and PKD-related complications. Offering dietary treatment to attenuate PKD disease progression has the potential to improve …
