The Evaluation Of Research For Promotion And Tenure: An Organizational Perspective, Elsa G. Nadler May 1999

The Evaluation Of Research For Promotion And Tenure: An Organizational Perspective, Elsa G. Nadler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The literature on promotion and tenure in institutions of higher education includes a substantial amount of research on various aspects of faculty productivity. Yet other research concentrates on the organizational structure of higher education. In his 1986 book, Burton Clark called for research that would examine how what he called the enterprise (the local university as opposed to the statewide system) and departments within it interact in important arenas.;This dissertation takes up Clark's challenge to examine the interaction of enterprise and department in promotion and tenure in three areas: goals, structure and operations. Content analysis of faculty handbooks from 25 …

Sequential Development Of The Gassaway Structure In Braxton County, West Virginia, Richard Ford Viso May 1999

Sequential Development Of The Gassaway Structure In Braxton County, West Virginia, Richard Ford Viso

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was undertaken in an effort to reconstruct the development history of the Gassaway dome in Braxton county, West Virginia. Several different analyses were performed to answer questions regarding the timing of the growth of the structure, and mechanisms responsible for the location and shape of the structure.;Interpretation of seismic line CNR-G1 reveals a fan-like distribution of faults (in cross-section), characteristic of strike-slip related positive flower structures. Structure and isopach maps constructed from several hundred wells throughout the study area help constrain the aerial extent of the Gassaway structure, defining it as a dome rather than an anticline. Well …

Productivity And Economic Growth In The Pittsburgh Region From 1850 To 1900, Benjamin Edward Morton May 1999

Productivity And Economic Growth In The Pittsburgh Region From 1850 To 1900, Benjamin Edward Morton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research presents an empirical test of the effect of economic growth on productivity in manufacturing within the Pittsburgh region from 1850 to 1900. Theoretical research in economic geography refers to this as Verdoorn's 'law'. The underlying reason for this relationship is the positive impact of economic growth on technological development, which translates into changes in productivity. This study provides an empirical test of this relationship at a very different scale and time frame than previous studies, namely the counties within the Pittsburgh nodal economic region. The period from 1850 to 1900 was one in which the Pittsburgh region developed …

Locating And Mapping Cemeteries In Loudon County, Virginia, Scott Marshall Sizer May 1999

Locating And Mapping Cemeteries In Loudon County, Virginia, Scott Marshall Sizer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Protecting smaller family-type cemeteries is a difficult task in a rapidly growing area. This paper investigates that ways in which Loudoun County, Virginia addressed cemetery protection concerns. Cemetery locational data was captured from a variety of sources and integrated into the countys geographic information system (GIS). The locational information was gathered through digitization and with a Global Positioning System (GPS). Once the cemetery locational information was in the GIS, it was then integrated into an existing land development process.

Localized Innovation: A Geography Of The Petro-Chemical Industry In The Kanawha Valley Of West Virginia., Jay Dean Gatrell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation investigates the Kanawha Valley petro-chemical industry. By identifying an intersection between the local dependence and the more applied innovation-based economic development literatures, this research operationalizes theories of local dependence. Conceptually, it is observed that the local dependence of Kanawha Valley residents, politics, and industry are the result of local decision making. Based on these decisions and experiences, ad hoc and planned social structures are constructed that reproduce the conditions of everyday life. Drawing on the case study, the dissertation expands the definition of local social structures to include innovation infrastructures. These specialized structures maintain, promote, and expand high …

The Effects Of Land-Use History On Plant Species Diversity And Abundance In Dambo Wetlands In Zimbabwe., Fortune Feresu Shonhiwa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Land-use history in Zimbabwe has caused dramatic differences in erosion severity between Commercial and Communal Lands. High population numbers have been found to be positively correlated with the extent of eroded area in Communal Lands. Dambo wetlands are particularly vulnerable to this population pressure as they are isolated wet areas supporting plant growth during the six to eight months of the dry season. In Zimbabwe, they cover 1.3 million hectares of the country. This study examines the plant composition and seed bank of these wetlands and compares vegetation in dambos with contrasting land-use histories, communal versus commercial. Communal Lands are …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recently there has been an explosive growth in the use of cellular telephones. Many people purchase "cell phones" specifically for the safety factor, expecting the same type of Enhanced 911 service they receive from landline phones. However, the only 911 service currently available for cellular callers in most areas is Basic 911, which means that emergency response time may be less than optimal. A recent Federal Communications Commission regulation promotes the provision of Enhanced 911 service for wireless customers. A key component of this Enhanced service is "Automatic Location Information" ("ALI"), a computerized report of caller location that allows calls …

The Origins Of Rapids In The Lower New River Gorge, West Virginia., Dawn Anne Moore Jan 1999

The Origins Of Rapids In The Lower New River Gorge, West Virginia., Dawn Anne Moore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rapids occur where supercritical flow conditions are present (Kieffer, 1985). Supercritical flow, resulting from a local decrease in stream depth or acceleration in flow, is commonly produced where voluminous surficial deposits or bedrock outcrops constrict the stream channel. Mapping at 1:10,000-scale shows that most rapids in the lower New River Gorge, are a result of surficial deposits, including valley-wall mass movement, tributary debris fans, and alluvium. Few rapids occur at bedrock outcrops. Half of the rapids are predominantly the result of valley-wall mass movement, including debris flow, rock fall, and debris slide/complex failures. Tributary debris-fan deposits, derived from debris flows …

Semi-Automated Modeling Approaches To Route Selection In Gis, Binfei Chen Dec 1998

Semi-Automated Modeling Approaches To Route Selection In Gis, Binfei Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As an alternative to traditional graphical intuitive approaches (GIA), a semi-automated modeling approach (SMA) can more efficiently identify linear routes by using powerful iterative and automated methods. In this research, two case studies were investigated to examine critical issues relating to the accuracy and effectiveness of raster-defined algorithmic approaches to linear route location. The results illustrate that different shortest-path algorithms do not necessarily result in markedly different linear routes. However, differing results can occur when using different neighboring-cell links in the cell-based route network construction. Cell-based algorithmic approaches in both Arc/Info and IDRISI software generate very similar results which are …

Hydrometeorologic and hydrologic data were collected for a 16-month period (4/97 to 8/98) using both manual and automated techniques. Precipitation totaled 135.6 cm and evapotranspiration (ET) calculated using the Penman-Monteith method totaled 107.5 cm. Recharge estimates from FMB ranged from 20.3% to 33.6%. Springflows were modeled using a stage-discharge cross-correlation method. Recharge estimates from …

Scale And Texture In Digital Image Classification, Christopher John Sebastian Ferro Dec 1998

Scale And Texture In Digital Image Classification, Christopher John Sebastian Ferro

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis is a theoretical and empirical study on textural properties of digital images. Spatial information exists at a hierarchy of scales and texture is a consequence of the objects in that hierarchy. Within-class texture results from the spatial arrangement of objects at the next finer level in the hierarchy than the informational class. Between-class texture results from spectral differences between adjacent classes and is most obvious near class edges, especially for smooth classes. In rough classes between-class variance may not differ much from within-class variance. Errors in classifications using texture, therefore, are most likely associated with, class edges; however, …

This study also incorporated extraction of profiles in the same location …

Hydrogeochemical Response Of An Acid-Producing Mine Spoil Aquifer To Induced Alkaline Recharge., Matthew H. Daly Jan 1998

Hydrogeochemical Response Of An Acid-Producing Mine Spoil Aquifer To Induced Alkaline Recharge., Matthew H. Daly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An experiment involving in situ neutralization of acidic ground water was performed on a mine-spoil aquifer in central West Virginia. The 45-acre aquifer was subjected to infiltration of lime slurry through a sludge pond located near the center of the mine. Ground-water and spring-water samples collected before lime infiltration indicate that a localized zone of neutralized ground water (pH 7) existed close to the sludge pond prior to the experiment. Concentrations of elevated sodium, pH and alkalinity correlate with the extent of neutralized ground water. This alkalinity is attributed to infiltration of sodium hydroxide-treated sludge, pumped into the sludge pond …
