Hydrogeologic Analysis Of Streamflow In Relation To Underground Mining In Northern West Virginia, David Robert Gill
Hydrogeologic Analysis Of Streamflow In Relation To Underground Mining In Northern West Virginia, David Robert Gill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Land subsidence, caused by longwall mining, has a negative effect on overlying watersheds. Nine streams were monitored from their headwaters to their mouths for discharge, temperature, conductivity, alluvium thickness, and alluvium sediment size. Seven streams are located over undermined longwall panels, with two located over non-undermined areas. Discharge data shows that non-undermined watersheds do not experience stream dewatering, regardless of alluvium thickness or sediment size. Streams located over active or recently mined longwall panels experience water loss that ranges from slight to total. Impacted streams with overall increases in conductivity and decreases in water temperature suggest that lost streamflow travels …

Inservice And Preservice Teacher Attitudes Toward Creative Writing As A Learning Mechanism, Edwin Davis Greenlee
Inservice And Preservice Teacher Attitudes Toward Creative Writing As A Learning Mechanism, Edwin Davis Greenlee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most of us in the teaching profession are aware by now that writing is inextricably interlocked with learning, thinking, and knowing. The more students write, the more knowledge they acquire. As Janet Emig informs us: "Writing serves learning uniquely because writing as process-and-product possesses a cluster of attributes that correspond uniquely to certain powerful learning strategies" (1983, 34). In other words, Emig (1971) believes that when using writing to learn, students can become involved in learning activities. Writing as learning permits students to integrate, connect, reconsider, evaluate, and personally shape their thoughts and ideas. By writing and rewriting, students can …

Data Points Or Cultural Entities: A Gis-Based Archaeological Predictive Model In A Post-Positivist Framework., Linwood Jesse Rouse
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Archaeological predictive models have been used in conjunction with sampling strategies, in large scale archaeological surveys, for over thirty years. During this time, these models have undergone many conceptual and theoretical changes. Archaeological predictive models stemmed from the positivist Processual Archaeology, but the shift from positivism has precipitated the need to reconsider the ideas from which they are based. There is a general trend within the current spectrum of ideologies to support the importance of cultural information in archaeological research. The following research contends that cultural information has not been utilized to its full extent in archaeological models and that …

Evidence For Fluvial-Controlled Coal Deposition In The Upper Tongue River Member (Fort Union Formation, Paleocene) Powder River Basin, Wyoming., Coen Michael Bauders
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent exploration in the Powder River basin has targeted shallow, coal-bed methane, and basin reserves may be as high as 39 trillion cubic feet. Both coal and sandstone beds serve as target methane reservoirs; however, the thick, persistent nature of the upper Tongue River Member coals makes them easier to correlate and map than any sandstone body. Correlating these coals and considering the differential compaction model for shallow structural development may help shed light on recognizable patterns in clastic-sediment and coal distribution. This study had a threefold purpose: (1) establish a regional stratigraphic framework for the upper Tongue River Member …

Revised Glacial Margins And Wisconsin Meltwater Paleoflood Hydrology In Slippery Rock Creek Basin, Central Western Pennsylvania, Gary John D'Urso
Revised Glacial Margins And Wisconsin Meltwater Paleoflood Hydrology In Slippery Rock Creek Basin, Central Western Pennsylvania, Gary John D'Urso
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Glacial margins mapped in Slippery Rock Creek basin during the 1950s are problematic. The number of sedimentological, mineralogical, petrological, and textural analyses used to distinguish glacial drifts in the southern portion of the basin were inadequate to resolve the margins. Furthermore, misidentification of man-made deposits as glacial drift led to erroneous interpretations regarding the extent and character of pre-Wisconsin glacial deposits, and appears to have influenced subsequent soil mapping. Canadian Shield erratic weathering was the primary tool used in this study to re-investigate the glacial margins. Erratics display one of three distinctive weathering rinds, so glacial deposits can be differentiated …

Multiple Data Set Integration And Gis Techniques Used To Investigate Linear Structural Controls In The Southern Powder River Basin, Wyoming, Heath Patrick Rasco
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lineaments in the Powder River Basin were mapped and categorized from Landsat TM imagery, a Digital Elevation Model (30 m), and Digital Line Graph (DLG) hydrology files. A GIS program was written using DLG information to eliminate those lineaments that were within 20° of roads and railroads. The DLG and DEM information was further used to stratify the topographic lineaments into slope-breaks, ridge-tops, or valleys. Rose diagrams created for each class of lineaments give important clues on the timing of their formation. The major northwest and northeast trends that these lineaments follow appear to correspond with those identified by previous …
