Late Quaternary Fluvial Stratigraphy Of The St. Albans Archeologic Site (46ka27), West Virginia, Courtney Andreas Nugent Jan 1998

Late Quaternary Fluvial Stratigraphy Of The St. Albans Archeologic Site (46ka27), West Virginia, Courtney Andreas Nugent

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The St. Albans archeologic site, recognized since 1964, occurs on a low terrace of the Kanawha River. Stratigraphic and magnetic susceptibility studies at the site have lead to the development of a model for predicting artifact recovery potential that is important to planning future excavations at the site.;Charcoal fragments, reddened soils and fire-cracked rocks indicate that most high magnetic susceptibility readings are produced by fire. The association of artifacts in many of these high magnetically susceptible sediments indicates they are cultural fire hearths. When executed early, magnetic susceptibilities studies should help archeologists.;The waxing and waning of late Pleistocene glaciation caused …

Basin Analysis Of The Carboniferous Strata In Central And Southern West Virginia Using Sequence Stratigraphic Principles., Chaoqing Yang Jan 1998

Basin Analysis Of The Carboniferous Strata In Central And Southern West Virginia Using Sequence Stratigraphic Principles., Chaoqing Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was designed to analyze the perplexing Carboniferous stratigraphy in the study area using a sequence-stratigraphic approach in conjunction with lithostratigraphic and subsurface mapping methods. A regional stratigraphic framework is established for the uppermost Devonian to Middle Pennsylvanian interval in the study area using a network of well-log cross sections. Lithostratigraphic units are correlated throughout the study area mostly at formation level; most of the units are correlated from the subsurface to their outcropping equivalents. Four sequences are identified within the study interval, based on the recognition of sequence-bounding unconformities, condensed sections and stacking patterns. The sub-Ravencliff unconformity is …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Digitized, multitemporal, small format 35 mm aerial photographs were acquired, processed, and classified to determine the relative value of spectral and phenological information for tree crown classification of digital images of the Eastern Deciduous Forest. The one-hectare study site, located in a second-growth forest 15 km east of Morgantown, West Virginia, was photographed from a light aircraft ten times from May to October 1997 using both true color and false color film. The negatives and positive transparencies were scanned, and then rectified, enhanced, and classified using ERDAS Imagine. Differences in the timing of phenologic events between tree species, specifically leaf …

The De/Re-Territorialization Of Struggle In Appalachia: The Legacy Of "Coal And Class" And The Cultural Politics Of Community., Stuart Lorkin Jan 1998

The De/Re-Territorialization Of Struggle In Appalachia: The Legacy Of "Coal And Class" And The Cultural Politics Of Community., Stuart Lorkin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Appalachia is a region that continues to represent a paradoxical place in the geographical imagination of its residents, scholars and popular writers. There is a long and well documented history of the often violent exploitation of its land and people, and a marginalized tradition of protest. The geography of economic, social and political development in the central core region is highly uneven, the product of tensions between raw material extraction such as coal, by capital, political control through an elite-state class, and variously organized social struggles. Studies of social movements within a cultural political framework provided a powerful mechanism of …

What Primary Care Physicians Need To Know About Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Delphi Of Experts And A Content Analysis., Barry Thomas Linger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurobiological condition characterized by developmentally inappropriate attention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. ADHD is a growing problem in the United States educational system with an estimated 3 to 5 percent of the school-aged population, or approximately 2 million children and adolescents affected. Substantial scientific research has been conducted to examine the effectiveness of stimulant medication as a treatment for ADHD. Little research, however, has been conducted to examine the preparedness of physicians to diagnose, treat, and monitor children with ADHD. This study determined what essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills primary care physicians …

"Out Of The Shambles Of Our History": Irish Women And (Post)Colonial Identity., Kelli Elizabeth Maloy Jan 1998

"Out Of The Shambles Of Our History": Irish Women And (Post)Colonial Identity., Kelli Elizabeth Maloy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Easter Rising of 1916 is often considered to mark the end of the colonial period in the territory now called the Republic of Ireland. Because for centuries preceding the Rising women were aligned with mythological and Christian images that glorified their saintly and maternal “nature,”it seemed the rising would mark a period during which women would no longer need to represent the motherland and might assume some degree of autonomy in Irish society. The reality, however, was that independence in the republic prompted a state-sanctioned preoccupation with regeneration of the nation and a system whereby the national subject was …

Family History Study Units In Secondary School: Their Educational Impact., William Foster Hayes Jan 1998

Family History Study Units In Secondary School: Their Educational Impact., William Foster Hayes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research purports to answer the question "What results may be derived from a classroom study of family history?" From a review of literature by four score teachers, administrators, and curriculum theorists, Hayes has elicited claims of 65 specific results in eight different categories. The quoted authors perceived that the classroom study of genealogy and family history: (1) Affects in positive ways how students feel about non-family history; (2) Promotes the learning of several disciplines related to history; (3) Reveals the interconnectedness of human society, and encourages multiracial and multicultural understanding; (4) Improves scholastic skills; (5) Builds students' sense of …

Effects Of Peer-Mediated Instructional Mnemonic Modeling Strategies On Learning Geographic Locations By Sixth-Grade Social Studies Students., Kimberly Bryan Jennings

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was designed to examine the effects of peer-mediated instructional mnemonic modeling strategies on learning geographic locations by sixth-grade social studies students. Experimental and control group scores, time-based memory retention, structural level of intervention, and experimental group attitudes were analyzed following the 10-week study. One teacher and 84 sixth-grade social studies students participated in the study. Experimental group students experienced peer-mediated mnemonic modeling activities during their regularly scheduled social studies classes while the control group received traditional geographic instruction only, which involved participation in the map outlining instructional process. Peer models were trained by the teacher as to the …

Estimating Local Lending Risk And Its Effect On Bank Asset Allocation., David John Sorenson Jan 1997

Estimating Local Lending Risk And Its Effect On Bank Asset Allocation., David John Sorenson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bank lending can have an important influence on local economic development. Banks have competing obligations, however, which compel them to look carefully at the riskiness of particular assets. This research addresses both lending risk assessment and the link between risk and lending by deriving risk measures based on industry mixes and testing whether differences in risk in local markets affect asset allocation. The research is both theoretical and empirical. The theoretical model of lending is based upon imperfect markets, risk aversion, and cost differentials. The model is extended to group banking to provide insight into the effects of diversification on …

The Ecology Of Darters In The Elk River, West Virginia., Stuart Andrew Welsh Jan 1997

The Ecology Of Darters In The Elk River, West Virginia., Stuart Andrew Welsh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The darter fauna in the Elk River, West Virginia, is extremely diverse (18 species); however, few studies exist on its ecology. This dissertation, which consists of three manuscripts, provides data on the ecology of darters within the Elk River. In the first manuscript, I estimated allozyme variation in the Tippecanoe (Etheostoma tippecanoe) and golden (Etheostoma denoncourti) darters, fishes with extremely fragmented distributions. Despite our findings of low variation at 22 loci, frequency differences at Pgm and Pgdh separated E. tippecanoe and E. denoncourti. The second manuscript is a study of microhabitat use and partitioning in ten darter species. While snorkeling, …

Post-Soviet Transitions In Policy And Management Of Zapovedniki And Lespromkhozi In Central Siberia., David Miller Ostergren

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 changed the government bureaucracy and dismantled the centrally controlled economic system. Directors of zapovedniki (strict nature preserves) and lespromkhozi (forest industry dependent communities) are experiencing a challenge to their ability to manage, protect and/or study the lands under their supervision. This study investigates how changes in the social-political system have affected the forests and protected areas in Central Siberia, and how managers have adapted to the current political and social climate. This investigation used case study methodology and three sources of empirical data; open-ended interviews, documentation from archival and secondary sources, and personal …

'Regional' Political Ecology And Underdevelopment In Appalachia: Case Studies From Two West Virginia Counties., James Todd Nesbitt Jan 1997

'Regional' Political Ecology And Underdevelopment In Appalachia: Case Studies From Two West Virginia Counties., James Todd Nesbitt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation analyzes the environmental history of Pendleton and Randolph Counties, West Virginia, as it relates to underdevelopment within the broader Appalachian region. Theories of political ecology and reconstructed regional geography are used to gain a better understanding of the intersection between cultural practice and human use of the natural environment. Specifically, three case study locales are utilized in this study to demonstrate local variability in natural resource issues within the Appalachian region. Political ecology and reconstructed regional geography are integrated to create a conceptually and contextually refined 'regional' political ecology which accounts for issues of geographic scale and alternative …

An Advocacy Coalition Approach To A Study Of The Politics Of Education In Tennessee., Patricia Ehle Ceperley Jan 1997

An Advocacy Coalition Approach To A Study Of The Politics Of Education In Tennessee., Patricia Ehle Ceperley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This was an instrumental case study that examined the extent to which the politics of education in Tennessee that resulted in the passage of the Education Improvement Act of 1992 and related tax increases conformed to the assumptions of the Advocacy Coalition Framework as articulated by Sabatier. The framework viewed education policy change as the result of the interaction of (a) competing advocacy coalitions within a policy subsystem over a decade or more, (b) changes that are external to the policy subsystem, and the (c) effects of stable system parameters. The researcher used a snowballing technique to identify 12 key …

Measuring The Benefits Of Air Quality Improvement: A Spatial Hedonic Approach., Chong Won Kim Jan 1997

Measuring The Benefits Of Air Quality Improvement: A Spatial Hedonic Approach., Chong Won Kim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The United Nations Environment Programme and the World Health Organization (1994) reported that Seoul has serious problems with sulfur dioxide. The primary objective of this study is to improve the methodology for estimating hedonic price functions when the data are inherently spatial in nature. The secondary objective is to estimate the marginal value of air pollution abatement in the Seoul metropolitan area. The hedonic property value model is employed to achieve this goal. To attain the primary objective, this study explicitly considers the spatial effects of housing prices in estimating the hedonic property value price function. Spatial weight matrices are …

A Neural Network Approach For Implementing A High Dimension Reduction Feature Finder For Automatic Image Matching., Qiang Lin Jan 1996

A Neural Network Approach For Implementing A High Dimension Reduction Feature Finder For Automatic Image Matching., Qiang Lin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation explores the Counter Propagation Network (CPN) to implement an image feature finder for automatic image matching systems. This research concludes that the CPN paradigm does not appear to be capable of extracting distinctive features for matching complex images such as fingerprints. There are three possible factors explored in the document that contribute to this inability to match. These are: (1) Image Enhancement - Most of fingerprint images have certain levels of localized blur or smear, locally low contrast, or other noise. Currently available image enhancement methods are shown to not suppress these noises effectively. (2) Image Invariance - …

Political Culture And The Coal Economy In The Upper Monongahela Region: 1776-1933., Michael Edward Workman Jan 1995

Political Culture And The Coal Economy In The Upper Monongahela Region: 1776-1933., Michael Edward Workman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The industrialization of Appalachia traditionally has been understood in terms of the penetration and exploitation of the region by outside capitalists. The role of indigenous capitalists in the development of the coal and other industries has been neglected. Most development studies have focused on the Central portions of Appalachia, virtually ignoring the northern parts of the region, including the Upper Monongahela region of Northern West Virginia. Moreover, most studies of industrialization have focused on the rural, rather than the urban, parts of the region. Furthermore, the study of the role of coal miners and the miners' union (United Mine Workers …

The Completion Of A Revolution: West Virginia From Statehood Through Reconstruction., Randall Scott Gooden Jan 1995

The Completion Of A Revolution: West Virginia From Statehood Through Reconstruction., Randall Scott Gooden

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Several questions leap to mind when one thinks of West Virginia during the Reconstruction period. What effects did the state's unique history of admission into the Union have upon the postwar period? How do the histories of West Virginia and the southern states compare during Reconstruction? How did West Virginia deal with its former Confederates? How does West Virginia's history compare with that of other border states? What led to the end of Reconstruction in West Virginia? In order to answer these questions, one must investigate the background of West Virginia's statehood movement, the political structure of the state and …

Paul Green, Symphonic Drama, And Popular Culture., Carolyn Craft Leech Jan 1993

Paul Green, Symphonic Drama, And Popular Culture., Carolyn Craft Leech

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Paul Green's symphonic dramas represent a collective memory for and a challenge to American popular culture. Green's artistic insight and dramatic innovation allowed him to applaud that culture and to inform it as he lauded past values of individual vision, courage, and hard work and urged compassionate confirmation of individual dignity. Green recorded features of mass culture, beginning with the people of his own North Carolina origin and eventually embracing the expanse of his country's geography and history. Green celebrated and defended the common man, and he created his literary works (especially his symphonic dramas) to cater to the tastes …

Analysis Of Aggregate Net Investment In Appalachian Agriculture., Stephen Nnaemeka Dike Jan 1987

Analysis Of Aggregate Net Investment In Appalachian Agriculture., Stephen Nnaemeka Dike

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research in areas of structural characteristics and investment demand of Appalachian agricultural production technology is sorely lacking despite such problems as slow factor adjustment, low returns on investments and increasing importance of non-farm income. Regional difference in geography, resource endowment and economic environment reflect differences in investment decision needs that dissipate in national aggregate studies. Ability of Appalachian farmers to benefit from national programs based on these national studies depends on the degree of homogeneity of the structural characteristics of Appalachian production technology relative to the U.S. This remains an empirical question. Based on dynamic optimization, and incorporating the adjustment …

John Dewey's Concept Of The Child., Charlotte Nelson Landvoigt Jan 1986

John Dewey's Concept Of The Child., Charlotte Nelson Landvoigt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

From an investigation of the entire published works of John Dewey, as well as much of his personal correspondence, this dissertation described and analyzed Dewey's concept of the child. It was discovered that Dewey's concept evolved through interactions with his family and, to a lesser extent, his social milieu. Despite some inconsistencies in his writings about the child, arising primarily from his attempts to persuade his audience to make societal changes benefiting the child, Dewey developed a cohesive, comprehensive concept--a concept which emphasized a view of the child as an active, growing being. Ten aspects of the child were examined …

A History Of The Samia Location In Western Kenya, 1890-1930., Jacob Raymond Seitz Jan 1978

A History Of The Samia Location In Western Kenya, 1890-1930., Jacob Raymond Seitz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This is a study of development and change on the local level in East Africa during the introduction and establishment of colonialism. Over the years the emphasis in African History has gradually shifted from the study of imperial policy and the Europeans' role to that of the African inhabitants. Until recently, this new focus has resulted principally in valuable studies of the precolonial life and migrations. Now it is the first decades of the twentieth century that are under scrutiny. This period, spanning the establishment of the colonial system, undoubtably had a great impact on independent Kenya.
