Development. Livelihood. Sustainability. Tourism. The post-positivistic approach of this study helped to illuminate the complexity that underscores these four simple words. It helped to fill knowledge gaps through exploration of the lived experience of tourism-based livelihoods within the Aysen region of southern Chile. With an understanding of this lived experience, the identification of more feasible and meaningful development interventions and policies becomes more likely. This dissertation seeks to articulate the extent to which George Eliot engages in an active dialogue with contemporary scientific thought, particularly in respect to England's Jewish and Gypsy populations. I examine The Spanish Gypsy and Daniel Deronda to determine Eliot's position in relation to ideologies on race, gender, and class. Eliot's texts manage to expose some of the contradictions regarding these two "domestic others" within the dominant discourses of the Victorian period. Chapter one sets out my critical and methodological framework and foregrounds the discursive proximity between the Gypsies, the Jews, the working classes, and women in the Victorian period. …

A Detailed Sequential Extraction Study Of Selenium In Coal And Coal-Associated Strata From A Coal Mine In West Virginia, Mimi Roy

This study of the mode of occurrence and distribution of selenium in a rock core from southcentral West Virginia reveals that total selenium concentration varies by rock type. Rocks with total selenium >1 mg/kg were of circum-neutral pH based on acid base accounting data. No direct correlation was found between selenium concentration in the rocks and that of sulfur and/or total organic carbon. The distribution of total selenium was also controlled by stratigraphy. The amount of total selenium extracted from various rock types like coal, shale, sandstone, mudstone and "carbolith" materials ranged from 50%. Selenium extracted from coal was mostly …

Several atypical antipsychotics have entered the market since the last decade. Evaluating the utilization patterns and overall cost savings generated by these expensive agents is becoming more important as their use continues to expand. Phase 1 of this study describes the patterns of antipsychotic utilization and its impact on total and mental health-related costs for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients in a state Medicaid program. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of increased temperatures associated with climate change on an understory medicinal herb, Panax quinquefolius. Three-year old P. quinquefolius were grown in a greenhouse at low (25°C day/20°C night) or elevated (30°C/25°C) temperatures for one growing season. Elevated temperatures decreased photosynthesis and accelerated leaf senescence. At the end of the growing season, biomass was detrimentally affected by increased temperatures; yet the concentration of root ginsenosides, secondary metabolites thought to be the primary pharmacological components, was higher in plants grown in the elevated temperature treatment than in plants grown in the low …

Regional and local subsurface log and 3D seismic interpretations were undertaken in the vicinity of the Buffalo Valley field in southeastern New Mexico. Oil production in the field is trapped in early Pennsylvanian basal Morrow Formation Harris Channel. Regional interpretation shows that the field is located on the Northwestern Shelf along the rim of the Delaware basin. Structure and isopach maps reveal that high production is associated with a structural low that actively developed during deposition of the reservoir interval. The Harris Channel scoured into the upper Mississippian Barnett shale. Areas of thin Barnett Shale coincide with production and define …

While surface mining began in West Virginia during WWI, the practice did not expand until WWII. Used to fuel the war effort, surface mining would become the industry-preferred means of mining coal and gained a permanent place in West Virginia's coal mining industry. Mountaintop removal surface coal mining began on Fayette County, West Virginia's, Bullpush Mountain in 1970. An extreme version of strip mining, during mountaintop removal the tops of mountains are removed via blasting in order to reveal the coal seams below. This dissertation is a collection of essays examining the secondary effects of excise taxation. The first chapter discusses the history of the excise tax in the United States and provides an introduction to some of the major areas of research examining the excise tax. In addition, this chapter outlines the research agenda for the dissertation. Chapter 2 considers the effects of cross-border sales and tourism on state tax revenues from wine and liquor taxation in the state of West Virginia. The Upper Pennsylvanian Glenshaw Formation contains a series of marine zones that were deposited on the detrital slope of the Appalachian highlands during the last major transgressions from the Midcontinent Sea in the Paleozoic of eastern North America. These marine zones contain distinctive fossil assemblages characterized as biofacies that inhabited a variety of shallow marine environments.;The first chapter of this paper focuses on the Ames marine zone sampled along a northwest-southeast transect across the Appalachian Basin. I quantified brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) movement and habitat use in a central Appalachian watershed, the upper Shavers Fork of the Cheat River over three seasons (spring/summer 2000-01, fall 2000) with telemetry. Cheat River of north central West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania is a stable moderately sinuous mountain river with numerous anabranching reaches that include 81 alluvial islands. Relatively stable features, Cheat River alluvial islands are characterized by woody vegetation or human habitation, an elevation equal to or greater than the surrounding floodplain, and a perennially exposed emergent surface surrounded by active channels. Valley geometry, lithology, and tributary input are the main geologic and geomorphic controls selected to assess island location in Cheat River. Tuscarora Creek watershed is located in the Appalachian Great Valley in Berkeley County, West Virginia. Thirteen springs and seven creek locations were sampled to evaluate spatial and temporal variability in major ion geochemistry. The controlling chemical signature was carbonate dissolution; distinctions could not be made between carbonate units and little evidence was seen for the recharge from adjacent clastic rocks. The springs in the upper watershed had greater temporal variability that may be due to enhanced transmissivity associated with a creek-parallel thrust fault. In 2001, the Department of Energy National Energy Technology Lab initiated a carbon sequestration pilot study in the West Pearl Queen field, located in Lea County, New Mexico. The purpose of this research is to inform both existing and developing community technology initiatives as to the critical factors for building effective rural community technology centers. Rural community technology centers which had been operating for at least two years were identified and contacted by telephone. Either a paid or volunteer staff person was interviewed using a semi-structured protocol of open-ended questions. Responses were taped, transcribed and coded using standard tools and procedures for qualitative investigation. Codes were grouped in 12 thematic groups. A regional equivalent porous medium (EPM) model was developed using available hydrogeologic data for the steeply-dipping karst aquifer of the Northern Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia and Virginia. The model employed uniform recharge and variable hydraulic conductivity (K) distributed at the formation level based on published field-test estimates. Three independent procedures were used for calibration, with the most acceptable approach using calibration to heads at wells and specified fluxes for springs. Although this procedure produced a reasonable regional head distribution and acceptable calibration statistics (mean error = 0.58 m, mean absolute error = 8.61 m), the use of specified fluxes …

In 1784, the residents of the upper east Tennessee Valley declared themselves independent from their parent state of North Carolina. The political and economic leadership of the newly formed state of Franklin utilized the ideology, symbolism, and rhetoric of the American Revolution to garner local, regional and national support for the movement. After the state's collapse in 1788, the state of Franklin continued to attract supporters and admirers, who considered the movement to be a noble extension of the revolution. Visible, near infrared (VNIR), and short wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral and thermal infrared (TIR) multispectral remote sensing have become potential tool for geological mapping. In this dissertation, a series of studies were carried out to investigate the potential impact of combining VNIR/SWIR hyperspectral and TIR multispectral data for surface geological mapping. This research examines the relationship between remotely sensed land-use changes and particular land-use policies within metropolitan Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1992 to 2002. During the 1990's the Pittsburgh region experienced a tremendous expansion of residential and urban land-use change while simultaneously experiencing a population decline. Within the metropolitan Pittsburgh area there are 525 local and independent municipal governments with the legislative right to enact or not to enact land-use planning policies enabled by the Pennsylvania Municipal Planning Code. This research is an investigation of how remote sensing can be used to supplement traditional methods of corridor management planning. Cultural resource inventory for corridor and interpretive management practices is an important component of applications for the designation of a selected route as Scenic Historic American Byways through the National Scenic Byways Program. During the seventeenth century a vibrant group of Native Americans, the Monytons, controlled southern West Virginia and northeastern Kentucky. The effects of contact with Europeans destabilized their societies as far inland as the Ohio Valley. This began the process which eventually pushed most Monytons from the region. The Five Nations Iroquois, pressured by social changes farther north, attacked the Monytons further drawing people out of the Ohio Valley. Introdution Forests throughout the West may require prescribed fire or thinning to reduce fire hazard and restore ecological processes. Aim The purpose of this study is to identify areas outside the range of historical variability based on the Time Since Last Fire (TSLF) relative to pre-Euroamerican fire return intervals. These areas with long TSLF relative to the historic fire return interval have high fire hazard and would be given high priority for prescribed burns. Roads and culverts have many effects on stream salamanders. We examined 120 culvert crossings in the Shavers Fork and Dry Fork watersheds in eastern West Virginia. Complete barriers to salamander passage occurred at 55.0% of the sites visited and partial barriers at 34.2%. Analyses showed that 20.6% of the total stream length in the Dry Fork watershed and 18.4% in the Shavers Fork watershed were isolated by barriers. We conducted salamander sampling at 16 streams and used Akaikeís Information Criterion to select the best a priori models explaining salamander diversity, richness, and abundance. This study explores how national factors such as the high performance bonus, work participation rate penalty, and caseload reduction credits from federal government influence state work attachment strategy choices. In addition, this study examines the effects of state work attachment strategies, such as lifetime limits, sanctions, and work requirements, on the employment and earning outcomes for welfare recipients in various states, along with the poverty rates in those states and the employment and economic status of former welfare recipients.
