Baselining A Compressed Air System: An Expert Systems Approach., Arul Prasad Senniappan
Baselining A Compressed Air System: An Expert Systems Approach., Arul Prasad Senniappan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The depletion of fossils fuels, the unstable supply of these fuels, and the phenomenal increase in energy costs emphasize the need to conserve energy. Compressed air systems are major energy consuming systems in most of industries and are known to be the most inefficient. The baselining of such systems assumes importance in energy conservation because of this. As a result, the baseline of such systems stresses the importance of energy conservation. When designing a new facility and operating an existing one, eliminating inefficiencies such as inappropriate uses, excessive system pressure, leaks and other wastages leads to energy conservation. This research …
Preventing The "Red Lake": United States National Security Policy In The Commonwealth Caribbean, 1962--1983., Amy R. Bradley
Preventing The "Red Lake": United States National Security Policy In The Commonwealth Caribbean, 1962--1983., Amy R. Bradley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis surveys the development of the Cold War U.S. national security policy in the Commonwealth Caribbean, beginning with Jamaica’s independence in 1962 through the 1983 American invasion of Grenada. The paper examines three areas deemed important to this security policy: communism, migration, and economics. The U.S. believed that the prevention of communism in the West Indies was the goal of this security policy, while the West Indies wanted solutions and aid for regional economic problems. Instead of creating a bilateral security policy to aid both sides, the U.S. dictated and controlled the policy to reflect its security needs, calling …
Energy Analysis, Diagnostics And Conservation In Semiconductor Manufacturing., Yogesh Mukesh Mardikar
Energy Analysis, Diagnostics And Conservation In Semiconductor Manufacturing., Yogesh Mukesh Mardikar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Semiconductor industry accounts for 1.3% - 2% of the total US electricity consumption in the manufacturing sector. Energy in the form of electricity is required to operate the manufacturing process equipment, maintain the clean room conditions, and operate equipment such as Heating Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC) units, and Chillers. The process equipment accounts for 40% of the operating costs in a semiconductor fabrication unit [8]. Since a significant amount of energy is used by the manufacturing process, it becomes necessary to determine process parameters which govern energy. A computer based interactive model referred to as Semiconductor Energy Calculation Program …

Developing Intelligent Synthetic Logs: Application To Upper Devonian Units In Pennsylvania., Luisa F. Rolon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A methodology to generate synthetic wireline logs is presented. Synthetic logs can help to analyze the reservoir properties in areas where the set of logs that are necessary, are absent or incomplete. The approach presented involves the use of Artificial Neural Networks, as the main tool, in conjunction with data obtained from conventional wireline logs. Implementation of this approach aims to reduce operation costs to companies. Development of the neural network model was completed using a General Regression Neural Network, and four wells that included gamma ray, density, neutron, and resistivity logs. Synthetic logs were generated through two different exercises. …
Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle
Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mankind has been concerned with the safety and well-being of workers for more than 2,000 years. Despite this concern, occupational injuries have claimed the lives of nearly 60,000 American workers from 1992-2001 as reported through the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program. The traditional measures of the human loss used—frequency, rate, and severity—are not the only measures of the achievements of the occupational safety and health community. Nor are they the only means to direct efforts to reduce the number of occupational incidents. Economic loss is another perspective that provides a more complete and meaningful …
Insertion Of Genes And Operons Into The Escherichia Coli Genome Through Targeted Recombination, Dennis Coss
Insertion Of Genes And Operons Into The Escherichia Coli Genome Through Targeted Recombination, Dennis Coss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A method whereby DNA sequences of varying size may be accurately inserted into pre-determined locations within the Escherichia coli genome was developed. Using a binary vector system that takes advantage of either the E. coli RecET enzyme tandem or bacteriophage lambda's Redalphabeta recombinatory proteins, this method has the benefits of being both inducible and self-degrading, thereby offering a level of control to the experimenter as well as alleviating any problems that may be associated with leaving residual DNA in the bacterium. To demonstrate the usability of this system, two antibiotic resistance genes, as well as the pyrroloquinoline quinone (pqq) and …
The Uaw, American Trade Policy, And The Transformation Of The Global Automobile Industry, 1945-1973., Mark A. Esposito
The Uaw, American Trade Policy, And The Transformation Of The Global Automobile Industry, 1945-1973., Mark A. Esposito
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 1934, the U.S. Congress passed the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, which empowered the president to negotiate reciprocally-beneficial tariff reductions with foreign governments. The bill sparked a heated debate in congress. Protectionists believed freer trade would allow cheaply-made products to flood the American market, while liberal trade advocates asserted that freer trade would improve employment and contribute to economic recovery. Organized labor was divided on trade and employment issues in 1934. During World War II, however, free trade supporters, including much of organized labor, associated liberalized trade with full employment. Organized labor believed that full employment and fair labor standards …
Women's Pacs: Their Motivations, Strategies, And Impacts., Heather Frederick
Women's Pacs: Their Motivations, Strategies, And Impacts., Heather Frederick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The literature on political action committees focuses on the different roles and strategies of PACs depending upon their motivation. I argue that the motivations of traditional PACs are founded in an assumption of substantive representation theory. This dissertation deals with the theoretical motivations of women's PACs—that of descriptive representation. Because women's PACs have a different underlying theoretical motivation than traditional political action committees, I hypothesize that the existing PAC literature on the strategies and organizational structures of PACs is both insufficient to explain the behavior of women's PACs, as well as exclusionary. This research seeks to identify the strategies and …
A Talented And Energetic Young Man: John Foster Dulles And His Preparation For Statesmanship, 1888-1937., Phillip A. Cantrell
A Talented And Energetic Young Man: John Foster Dulles And His Preparation For Statesmanship, 1888-1937., Phillip A. Cantrell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The dissertation is essentially a biography of John Foster Dulles, who was United States Secretary of State from 1953 until his death in 1959. This study, however, covers his life from birth in 1888 and stops in 1937, a decisive and important year in his personal development. Previous biographies have either focused almost exclusively on his years as Secretary of State or else, when they covered his early life, failed to see him in the full context of the era in which he lived or failed to fully explore some important primary sources. While beginning in a formal sense with …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Data scarcity has been a problem in data mining up until recent times. Now, in the era of the Internet and the tremendous advances in both, data storage devices and high-speed computing, databases are filling up at rates never imagined before. The machine learning problems of the past have been augmented by an increasingly important one, scalability. Extracting useful information from arbitrarily large data collections or data streams is now of special interest within the data mining community. In this research we find that mining from such large datasets may actually be quite simple. We address the scalability issues of …
Moment Form And Joseph Schwantner's "Aftertones Of Infinity"., Michael D. Albaugh
Moment Form And Joseph Schwantner's "Aftertones Of Infinity"., Michael D. Albaugh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This document represents the first comprehensive analysis of Joseph Schwantner's Aftertones of Infinity as an example of moment form. Exploring Stockhausen's description of moment form and its recent interpretations in Jonathan Kramer's discussion of moment time, this paper will investigate Schwantner's Aftertones by focusing on its eighteen moments. The analysis will define these moments by their underlying static harmonies, fixed tempos, and consistency of textures, melodies, and rhythmic materials. This paper will further demonstrate that the musical meaning of the piece would remain unchanged even if its defined moments were reordered. An alternate ordering of the moments demonstrates to the …

The change detection methods used were post-classification comparison, direct classification, image differencing, principal component analysis, and change vector analysis. Results of the simulated experiments confirmed …
The Influence Of Legal Language Upon Supreme Court Voting In Civil Liberties Cases., Sean Wilson
The Influence Of Legal Language Upon Supreme Court Voting In Civil Liberties Cases., Sean Wilson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Scholars such as Jeffrey Segal and Harold Spaeth contend that U.S. Supreme Court decisions are based primarily upon the ideological beliefs of the justices. However, in this work I show that this conclusion is exaggerated. The aggregation of votes into a summary statistic (the percent liberal rating) and its use by Segal and Spaeth in a regression having only 21 cases creates misleading results. The truth is that political ideology is a fluctuating influence upon the Court. In some areas of civil liberties voting, ideology is a poor explanation of how cases are decided (e.g., core political speech). But in …

Smectics And Smectic-Like Phases: Equation Of State, Finite Size Effects And Vapor Pressure Paradox., Lianghui Gao
Smectics And Smectic-Like Phases: Equation Of State, Finite Size Effects And Vapor Pressure Paradox., Lianghui Gao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this dissertation, I pursue the constant pressure ensemble approach to elucidate the statistical mechanics of smectic phases of semi-flexible manifolds. I use this approach to consider in detail sterically stabilized phases of semi-flexible polymers in two-dimensional smectic systems. For the first time, the universal constants characterizing the entropic repulsion between semi-flexible polymers are obtained. The thermodynamic limit is quickly approached within this constant pressure ensemble. Then I elucidate the classical problem of the elastic free energy of semi-infinite smectic A that fills the semi-space above an interface (a boundary smectic layer) of a given shape. I obtain an effective …

Religiosity And Spirituality In Spousal Caregivers Of Older Adults With Dementia: Testing Anxiety Moderator And Mediator Models., Andrea K. Shreve-Neiger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Intensive and extensive caregiving of older adults disabled by dementia is frequently provided by the older adult's spouse. Caregiving for a spouse with dementia has been related to a number of poor physical and mental health outcomes for the primary caregiver. Anxiety is one outcome that is endorsed frequently by the caregiver, yet remains minimally studied in relation to caregiving. In addition, no study has identified factors that potentially moderate the relation between caregiving stressors and anxiety in older adults. This study explored the relations among caregiving stressors, burden, religiosity, spirituality, and anxiety in older adult caregivers. Several models were …
Using Spatial Statistics To Model The Spatial Structure Of Data In Remote Sensing Change Detection: The Case Of Urban Sprawl., Jeffrey Scott Spiker
Using Spatial Statistics To Model The Spatial Structure Of Data In Remote Sensing Change Detection: The Case Of Urban Sprawl., Jeffrey Scott Spiker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Spatial structure in remotely sensed imagery is shown to impact the change detection procedure. Methods to incorporate spatial statistics into correlation-based and regression-based change detection that control for the spatial structure in this data are proposed. These procedures are presented by means of an urban change detection case study utilizing Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+ imagery in the area to the west of the Baltimore, MD I Washington D.C. metropolitan area between 1989 and 2002. In the correlation-based analysis, the results show that the use of point-to-point correlation is often inappropriate in the examination of spatial datasets. In addition, spatial …

The Role Of Joint Control In The Manded Selection Responses Of Non-Vocal Children With Autism., Joyce C. Tu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the present study, joint control training was applied when teaching selection responses to four non-vocal children with autism. This study is a systematic replication of Tu (2001). The children were two males (ages six and seven), and two females (ages twelve and thirteen). The result showed that it was only after the joint tact/self-mimetic/sequelic control training that the symmetrical performance of manded selection responses appeared with no additional training.
Physical Mechanism Of Calcium Ion-Atpase Regulation By Phospholamban., Jason Robert Waggoner
Physical Mechanism Of Calcium Ion-Atpase Regulation By Phospholamban., Jason Robert Waggoner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this research project was to elucidate the physical mechanism of Ca2+-ATPase regulation by phospholamban in cardiac muscle. The Ca2+-ATPase transports calcium into the sarcoplasmic reticulum in order to promote muscle relaxation. Phospholamban regulates the Ca 2+-ATPase in the heart by decreasing the apparent calcium affinity of the Ca2+-ATPase, resulting in an inhibition of Ca 2+-ATPase activity. At present, the physical mechanism by which phospholamban regulates the Ca2+-ATPase is unknown. Our central hypothesis was that phospholamban disrupts the Ca2+-ATPase conformational transition from the low Ca2+ affinity state (the E2 intermediate) to the high Ca2+ affinity state (the E1 …
Estimating The Economic Value Of Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge: A Contingent Valuation Approach., Christopher A. Klocek
Estimating The Economic Value Of Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge: A Contingent Valuation Approach., Christopher A. Klocek
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge protects a unique ecosystem in the Mid-Atlantic region. Because public goods such as ecosystem preservation are not sold in markets the value of this type of good is not always obvious. Policy makers need guidance on how society should allocate resources to preserve wildlife habitat and wilderness recreation opportunities. The goals of this study were to measure the economic benefits associated with providing a wildlife refuge in Tucker County, West Virginia; determine how value for the refuge is affected by distance of the respondents from the refuge; and determine the types of activities and amenities …
