A review of emission reduction technologies applicable for marine engines is presented in this study. The experimental results of onboard testing of a high-speed passenger ferry to determine the benefits of low sulfur diesel (LSD) fuel and intake air water injection are presented. Gaseous emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), and particulate matter (PM) emissions were measured using on-board emission measurement systems developed …
Uncertainty Analysis In Software Reliability Of Component-Based Systems, Sunil Kumar Kamavaram
Uncertainty Analysis In Software Reliability Of Component-Based Systems, Sunil Kumar Kamavaram
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several architecture-based software reliability models were proposed in the past. These models compute the point estimate of system reliability by plugging point estimates of unknown parameters into the model. These models however, discard the uncertainty of the parameters, that is, they do not attempt to answer the question how parameter uncertainties propagate into overall system reliability. Therefore, the traditional way of estimating software reliability by plugging point estimates may not be appropriate. This thesis is focused on uncertainty analysis of architecture-based software reliability models. In particular, we present uncertainty analysis using the following methods: entropy, perturbation theory, method of moments …

This model strongly encourages development of local data as input requirements in order to improve the quality of the modeling. The purpose of this study was to develop methodologies and appropriate factors or truck distribution profiles to convert basic short-term classification counts into volume estimates for …
Analysis Of Composite Moving Beams Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory, Govindan Nagappan
Analysis Of Composite Moving Beams Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory, Govindan Nagappan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A Composite beam moving longitudinally over its supports is analyzed based on a higher-order shear deformation theory. The dynamic behavior of the beam is carried out using the finite element method. The formulation is based on a variational principle. The essential constraints are applied via Lagrange multipliers. This method is effective for the moving beam problem where the relative support locations change with time and therefore the supports do not fall exactly at the nodes. An initially deformed overhang beam moving over two simple supports is used for the analysis. The first flexural mode shape of the beam is used …

Evaluation Of Moment Redistribution For Hybrid Hps 70w Bridge Girders, Lili Yang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent studies have demonstrated that the use of hybrid steel bridge I-shaped girders (specifically sections incorporating Grade 50 webs and High Performance Steel (HPS) 70W flanges) can produce steel weight savings and overall design economy for a wide range of typical steel bridge superstructures. Additionally, recent research at WVU in collaboration with others has led to proposed simplified moment redistribution techniques that have been adopted by AASHTO. These procedures are similar in nature to existing limits that permit up to 10% of the maximum factored negative bending moments to be redistributed to positive bending regions in members comprised of compact …
Comparison Of Forest Road Characteristics Between Forest Stewardship Properties And Non-Forest Stewardship Properties In Central West Virginia, Matthew A. Provencher
Comparison Of Forest Road Characteristics Between Forest Stewardship Properties And Non-Forest Stewardship Properties In Central West Virginia, Matthew A. Provencher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Eight non-stewardship properties and seven stewardship properties were visited and measurements were taken to determine whether or not differences exist between these two property types. Twenty dependent variables relating to residual vegetation, forest road characteristics, erosion and certain best management practices were used to characterize timber harvesting operations that had been conducted on these property types. With the exception of road density and waterbar implementation, analysis of these dependent variables failed to detect any statistical differences among property types. Results suggest that stewardship landowners may also have a wider range of harvest objectives as well as use a wider diversity …

Mechanisms Of Retroviral Reverse Transcription And Assembly, Sara Kirsten Rasmussen
Mechanisms Of Retroviral Reverse Transcription And Assembly, Sara Kirsten Rasmussen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The work described in these dissertation studies examines three aspects of retrovirus replication and dissects the uncovered phenomena to increase understanding of how retroviruses thrive in complex host environments. The first aspect of replication discussed is the mechanisms behind minus-strand DNA transfer, a crucial step of reverse transcription. We proved for the first time that non-viral sequences can be utilized to carry out this step of the replication process, and that the minus-strand DNA transfer step can be exploited to reconstitute a functional gene in the infected host cell. This finding serves as a proof-of-principle for a new class of …

Advisors' Attitudes Toward Developmental Placement And The Academic Performance And Perceived Success Of Their Underprepared Community College Advisees, June Elizabeth Bracken
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Open admissions policies pose a critical challenge to retention at community colleges because, on average, over one third of the students enter unprepared to meet the academic demands. Faced with the shocking first-year attrition rate of over fifty percent at public community colleges (McCabe, 2000), taxpayers, legislators, and college officials have become embroiled in debate over the high cost of remediation and the "human capital" (Shaffer, 1997, 1998) costs of pitting access against excellence. Previous research has established that mandatory basic skills assessment and mandatory placement into developmental courses leads to lower attrition rates and higher grade point averages for …

Analysis Of Multi-Branch Torsional Vibration For Design Optimization, Yuwen Yao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Industries worldwide are rapidly developing advanced complex machinery. One area that must be considered in these engineering systems is torsional vibration for multi-branch and multi-junction systems. If torsional vibrations are not considered, they could lead to early failures and costly repairs to machinery.;Torsional vibration is a type of severe twisting motion due to improperly designed rotation machinery. It usually causes noticeable sound disturbances and potential fatigue problems. Torsional vibration happens when an excitation frequency gets close to the natural frequency of the system. This frequency exists at one or more periods of the operating range in torsional systems. Torsional vibration …

Enhanced Solids Removal Design Based On Characterization Of Quiescent Zone Hydrodynamics In Flow-Through Aquaculture Systems., Andrea T. Rumberg
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Typically, solids removal in flow-through aquaculture systems consists of movement of solids to a quiescent settling chamber from which they are removed after settling. Commonly used solids removal processes are time and labor intensive and generally inefficient. Due to expected increases in federal effluent discharge regulations, development of efficient quiescent zones is essential to future growth of the aquaculture industry. However, before alternate designs were considered, hydrodynamic properties of traditional systems needed studied to adequately establish baseline characteristics. Characterization was achieved using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV), which measured velocity in three dimensions. Solids settling properties were characterized using specific …

The Impact Of Stimulation On Production Decline Type Curves For Cbm Wells., Manuel Arturo Sanchez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coalbed methane (CBM) is considered an unconventional gas resource produced from coal seams usually with low permeability at shallow depths. Analyzing the production performance in CBM reservoirs is challenging, especially at the early stage of the recovery. Most of the small producers in the Appalachian Basin cannot afford personnel or meet economical requirements involved in the use of the numerical simulator to evaluate CBM reservoirs. Production type curve are useful tool for predicting the performance of CBM reservoirs. A set of type curves have been previously developed for unstimulated vertical wells in CBM reservoirs. Most of the CBM wells drilled …

An Efficient Method For Texture-Based Image Retrieval., Umasankar Kandaswamy
An Efficient Method For Texture-Based Image Retrieval., Umasankar Kandaswamy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The extraction of significant features from an image is a primary process in content-based analysis of image data. It is also a computationally intensive process. Using an appropriate approximation of the original image with effective signal processing can decrease the computational cost of the feature extraction process by orders of magnitude. This thesis shows that a pertinent approximation for texture images when used with a proposed distance measure can lead to a significant reduction in the cost of texture image analysis without introducing any significant error in the retrieval performance. An evaluation of the hypothesis is conducted in two popular …
