Design And Implementation Of A Multithreaded Softcore Processor With Tightly Coupled Hardware Real-Time Operating System, Terance Prabhasara Wijesinghe
Design And Implementation Of A Multithreaded Softcore Processor With Tightly Coupled Hardware Real-Time Operating System, Terance Prabhasara Wijesinghe
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this thesis is to design and implement an FPGA-based softcore processor with hardware Real Time Operating System (RTOS).;RTOSs provide an abstracted environment on top of the hardware with different mechanisms to simplify and coordinate the behavior of the system. Software mechanisms including multithreading, semaphores, timers, interrupts, etc. consume large amounts of CPU time which increases overhead and contributes to the degradation of the performance. In order to offload this overhead, RTOSs with hardware acceleration have been a research topic with considerable interest. Most research works are focused on the design of a hardware RTOS external to the …

University Students' Perceptions Of Their Parents' Childrearing Styles Associated With Their Inclinations To Become Parents, Judi Mccracken
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Researchers have associated Diane Baumrind's parenting styles (Baumrind, 1967; Baumrind, 1966; Baumrind, 1968; Baumrind, 1971) with countless outcomes among children, adolescents, and adults. However, few, if any, have investigated an age group's perceptions of their childrearing compared with their inclination to become parents. This study examined 67 West Virginia University students' responses to the Adapted Parenting Attribute Questionnaire (APAQ) completed by Child Development and Family Studies majors in 2007. The purpose was to determine patterns of perceptions in guardians' parenting styles, then compare the participants' inclinations to become parents and their rankings of importance (low, medium, or high; low and …

Development Of An Open Loop Fuzzy Logic Urea Dosage Controller For Use With An Scr Equipped Hdd Engine, Theodore R. Adams
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) has been shown to be the most promising exhaust aftertreatment system for reducing oxides of nitrogen in near term in-use applications. SCRs use the ammonia containing compound urea, as a reducing agent. In order to control the urea dosage during transient operation of the engine, sophisticated control strategies are needed. The goal of this study was to design a controller to achieve the maximum NO x emission reduction possible in the transient mode of engine operation, without causing ammonia slip. The development of an open loop, non-sensor based fuzzy logic urea dosage controller is discussed in …

Employ Sensor Fusion Techniques For Determining Aircraft Attitude And Position Information, Jason A. Jarrell
Employ Sensor Fusion Techniques For Determining Aircraft Attitude And Position Information, Jason A. Jarrell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) with the level of precision needed for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) can easily cost more than the vehicle itself. This drastically increases the amount of aircraft power consumption and payload weight that drives the need for a low cost solution. This can be achieved through the use of sensor fusion techniques on low cost accelerometers and gyroscopes fused with Global Positioning System (GPS) data. In this paper, existing GPS and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) flight data is fused with the use of both an Kalman filter (KF) and Extended Kalman filter (EKF) methods for a more …
Evaluation Of Current Deck Design Practices, Jeremy M. Meadway
Evaluation Of Current Deck Design Practices, Jeremy M. Meadway
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent changes in the design code, spurred by previous laboratory studies, have allowed many state agencies to adopt an empirical method for bridge deck design. The empirical method for design takes into account in plane stresses generated by applying load to the deck. These in plane forces, which in traditional design are ignored, act to strengthen the overall response of the deck.;This design procedure has been adopted and employed by the WVDOH as well as many other state agencies. Recent decking issues, specifically extensive full depth cracking, have led to concerns about other bridges in the inventory and future ones …
Mechanical Characterization Of Fabrics For Inflatable Structures, Juan Cruz Molina Pombo
Mechanical Characterization Of Fabrics For Inflatable Structures, Juan Cruz Molina Pombo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several mechanical properties of fabrics for inflatable structures have been characterized. In this work, the characterization was done for fabrics in a tunnel plug. As a plug the structure should seal the tunnel and maintain itself static, for that reason the characterization of the frictional system tunnel wall/structure fabric is done. Also, by the study of the maximum stresses under this configuration, the tensile strength of the structural fabrics is studied. In order to characterize the fabric properties, friction and strength, a test for each of them was done.;The tensile strength test was performed for two fabrics, according to the …

Design And Testing Of An Independently Controlled Urea-Scr System For Marine Diesel Applications, Derek Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diesel engine emissions for on-road, stationary and marine applications are regulated through new EPA standards. The most difficult species of exhaust gas constituents to reduce are oxides of nitrogen, NOx. The use of urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is promising for NO x abatement as a retrofit application. This work focused on the reduction of NOx by use of a stand alone urea injection system, applicable to marine diesel engines. Most current systems communicate with engine controls to predict NOx emissions based on signals such as torque and engine speed. Many marine engines employ mechanical injection technology and lack communication …

For each survey question, the Spearmen Rho correlation coefficient was used to determine if a correlation existed between individual variables and the teacher's decision to refer a student for special education services. The Mann-Whitney U …
Methods For Reconstruction Of Transient Emissions From Heavy -Duty Vehicles, Madhava R. Madireddy
Methods For Reconstruction Of Transient Emissions From Heavy -Duty Vehicles, Madhava R. Madireddy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Emissions measurement analyzers give out a response that may not reflect the true instantaneous engine-out emissions. Currently, the heavy-duty diesel engines are being certified for emissions measured in a thirty second time window with certain specification requirements for the analyzers. Since these measured emissions values may not be the same as the true instantaneous emissions, integrated values for the thirty second windows may be affected by analyzer response.;This document presents and examines reconstruction techniques to estimate instantaneous heavy-duty engine-out emissions. These techniques will take as the input, the continuous set of emissions data and approximate dispersion characteristics of the analyzer …

Direct Suffix Sorting And Its Applications, Fei Nan
Direct Suffix Sorting And Its Applications, Fei Nan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The suffix sorting problem is to construct the suffix array for an input sequence. Given a sequence T[0... n -- 1] of size n = |T|, with symbols from a fixed alphabet Sigma, (|Sigma| ≤ n), the suffix array provides a compact representation of all the suffixes of T in a lexicographic order. Traditionally, the suffix array is often constructed by first building the suffix tree for T, and then performing an inorder traversal of the suffix tree. The direct suffix sorting problem is to construct the suffix array of T directly without using the suffix tree data structure. We …

Association Of Changes In Norepinephrine And Serotonin Transporter Expression With The Long-Term Behavioral Effects Of Antidepressant Drugs, Zaorui Zhao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The relationship between the ability of repeated antidepressant treatment to cause down-regulation of the norepinephrine and serotonin transporters (NET, SERT) and produce antidepressant-like effects on behavior was determined. Treatment of rats with 15 mg/kg/day desipramine reduced NET expression, measured by 3H-nisoxetine binding and SDS-PAGE/immunoblotting, in cerebral cortex and hippocampus and reduced the time of immobility in the forced-swim test. The antidepressant-like effect on forced-swim behavior was evident two days following discontinuation of desipramine treatment when plasma and brain levels of desipramine and its major metabolite desmethyldesipramine were not detectable. Reduced NET expression resulted in decreased norepinephrine (NE) uptake, measured in …

Three Essays On Relationships Between The Public Sector And Population Migration, Robert R. Dunn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is a collection of papers examining the consequences and determinants of population migration at the state and county level. The first chapter introduces the importance of domestic migration in the United States and briefly presents the issues that are covered in this work. The second chapter focuses on the possibility that state outmigration could result in reduced support of public higher education. Some authors have hypothesized that forward-looking state legislators respond to outmigration of certain age groups by reducing appropriations to higher education. In the empirical model, outmigration is disaggregated into six age groups to examine varying effects …

Information-Outage Analysis Of Finite-Length Codes, David Scott Buckingham
Information-Outage Analysis Of Finite-Length Codes, David Scott Buckingham
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The performance of random error control codes approaches the Shannon capacity limit as the code length goes to infinity. When the code length is finite, then the code will be unable to achieve arbitrarily low error probability and a nonzero codeword error rate is inevitable. Information-theoretic bounds on codeword error rate may be found as a function of length through traditional methods such as sphere packing. Alternatively, the behavior of finite-length codes can be characterized in terms of an information-outage probability. The information-outage probability is the probability that the mutual-information rate, which is a random variable, is less than the …

Predicting The Performance Characteristics Of Assembled Rollover Protective Structure Designs For Tractors, James R. Harris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tractor overturn fatalities are the single leading cause of agricultural fatalities in the United States. Approximately 100 people die each year as the result of a tractor overturn. Effective engineering controls to mitigate injury and prevent death from tractor overturns are available in the form of rollover protective structures (ROPS) and seatbelts. However, approximately 50% of all tractors in the United States are without ROPS. Cost of ROPS is frequently cited as a reason why tractor owners do not have ROPS installed. Cost-effective ROPS (CROPS) have been developed with the intent to lower the cost of retro-fitting a tractor with …

Pilot Fatigue Detection Using Aircraft State Variables, Benjamin L. Smith
Pilot Fatigue Detection Using Aircraft State Variables, Benjamin L. Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pilot fatigue has been proven to be the cause of many aviation accidents. Fatigue introduces error into the pilot's inputs, which can potentially lead to accidents. To date, fatigue has been widely researched through physiological variables and sleep studies. Often, systems monitoring physiological variables would require constant physical contact with the pilot during flight. This arrangement could be cumbersome to pilots, and may hinder their flying ability even more. These systems will also add unnecessary weight to the aircraft, which could lead to increases in fuel consumption. Sleep studies have been investigated in an attempt to determine causes of pilot …
