Performance And Area Optimization For Reliable Fpga-Based Shifter Design, Zahid Ali Syed May 2008

Performance And Area Optimization For Reliable Fpga-Based Shifter Design, Zahid Ali Syed

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis addresses the problem of implementing reliable FPGA-based shifters. An FPGA-based design requires optimization between performance and resource utilization, and an effective verification methodology to validate design behavior. The FPGA-based implementation of a large shifter design is restricted by an I/O resource bottleneck. The verification of the design behavior presents a further challenge due to the 'black-box' nature of FPGAs. To tackle these design challenges, we propose a novel approach to implement FPGA-based shifters. The proposed design alleviates the I/O bottleneck while significantly reducing the logic resources required. This is achieved with a minimal increase in the design delay. …

Effects Of A Mind-Consciousness-Thought (Mct) Intervention On Stress And Well-Being In Freshman Nursing Students, Judith A. Sedgeman May 2008

Effects Of A Mind-Consciousness-Thought (Mct) Intervention On Stress And Well-Being In Freshman Nursing Students, Judith A. Sedgeman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An emerging "health" paradigm, Mind-Consciousness-Thought (MCT), proposes that three universal Principles, Mind (life energy), Consciousness (the capacity to be aware of thinking as "reality"), and Thought (the ability to create thinking continually), explain how psychological experience is created from the inside-out, not created from the outside-in by events and circumstances. It proposes that life comes through us, not at us. It proposes that insight into the existence and operation of those principles reconnects people to their innate mental well-being, an always accessible source of balance, wisdom, and creativity (i.e., resiliency). It proposes that accessing mental well-being is incompatible with chronic …

Growth And Survival Of Eleven Planted Tree Species On A Reclaimed Surface Mine In West Virginia, Paul Emerson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Commercial forestry as a post-mining land use in West Virginia requires an average of 1.2-m or more of weathered brown sandstone and topsoil on the spoil surface after regrading to the final land topography. Commercially valuable hardwood trees are to be planted in this substrate, and survival and growth of these trees must be monitored over a 12-year bonding period. Success of the commercial hardwood planting is based on the growth of white pine ( Pinus strobus L.), which must achieve greater than 0.45 meters of average growth per year. At the Catenary surface mine in 2005, three, 2.8-ha plots …

Postpartum Sleep Disturbance And Psychomotor Vigilance Performance, Salvatore Insana May 2008

Postpartum Sleep Disturbance And Psychomotor Vigilance Performance, Salvatore Insana

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Postpartum women have high rates of sleep disturbance and commonly suffer from many of the effects of disturbed sleep, though attentional state has not been studied extensively in this population. This study assessed sleep and attentional state psychomotor performance in postpartum women to develop a better understanding of how sleep disturbance --specifically sleep fragmentation and partial sleep deprivation-- is associated with attentional state psychomotor performance. Participants were a sample of 24 postpartum mothers from a larger study. Mothers were 29.96 (SD = 7.94) years old, had a mean income of {dollar}65,808 (SD = {dollar}41,398), and had 17.04 (SD = 2.53) …

Subsurface Stratigraphy And Depositional Patterns Of The Lower Mississippian Weir Zone Of Doddridge County, West Virginia, With Emphasis On Reservoir Potential, John Hamilton Tellers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Weir zone of Doddridge County, West Virginia, is considered to be an unconventional reservoir due to its low permeability. Analysis of this zone was performed using well log data from 300 wells, a full-bore core of the Weir, and petrographic thin sections. Three lithologies occur within the Weir: coarse siltstone, fine siltstone, and claystone. Bedforms were identified using a combination of FMI, thin section, and core analysis. The Weir is interpreted to have been deposited on an outer shelf under the influence of shoaling internal waves. Log analysis provided data showing the unit to have a mineral composition of …

Stream Flow Characterization Over Longwall Coal Mines In Pennsylvania, Ohio, And West Virginia, Scott A. Wade

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Six streams were studied in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to evaluate subsidence impacts from active and abandoned longwall coal mines on stream discharge. Mined longwall panels included in this study ranged in age from five months to fifteen years old and in depth from 100 to 600 feet (30.5 to 182.9 m) beneath the studied streams.;Significant stream flow losses and gains were detected in each stream studied. Comparing longwall panel locations to stream flow measurements, geophysical surveys, and geomorphology surveys, it was concluded that longwall mine subsidence caused some of the detected stream flow losses and gains. Data collected …

Application Of The Biolog Microplate System To Monitor The Physiological Response Of Heat-Stressed Bacteria, Matthew G. Mccarroll May 2008

Application Of The Biolog Microplate System To Monitor The Physiological Response Of Heat-Stressed Bacteria, Matthew G. Mccarroll

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The BIOLOG microplate system was originally evaluated by Miller and Rhoden (1991) for its ability to correctly identify clinical and environmental isolates. The system determines identity based on the exchange of electrons produced during utilization of a carbon substrate and subsequent respiration, leading to the reduction of a tetrazolium-based color change. Enteric bacteria ( Escherichia coli, Enterobacter sakazakii, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium) were exposed to heat stress (52°C) and samples were removed as a function of time (0, 15, 30 and 90 min). Stressed cells were monitored with traditional viable cell counts and inoculated into BIOLOG GN plates. The …

Measuring Hearing Protection Performance Results In A Mire-Compliant Reverberatory Chamber Versus A Non-Mire Compliant Room, Mahela Sanguinetti May 2008

Measuring Hearing Protection Performance Results In A Mire-Compliant Reverberatory Chamber Versus A Non-Mire Compliant Room, Mahela Sanguinetti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is a method developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine the effectiveness of hearing protection devices (HPD). The limitations of NRR values have led to use of other methods, including fit-testing hearing protectors on the individuals who will use them. The fit-testing method used in this study is the Microphone in Real Ear (MIRE) method, which describes how to test earmuffs in a reverberatory chamber. A reverberatory chamber is extremely costly and not likely to be available at work-sites. If fit-testing could be completed in any room instead of in a reverberatory chamber, work-sites …

Computer Modeling Of Dapsone-Mediated Heteroactivation Of Flurbiprofen Metabolism By Cyp2c9, Robyn Renee Ayscue May 2008

Computer Modeling Of Dapsone-Mediated Heteroactivation Of Flurbiprofen Metabolism By Cyp2c9, Robyn Renee Ayscue

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The occurrence of atypical kinetics in cytochrome P450 reactions can confound in vitro determinations of a drug's kinetic parameters. During drug development, inaccurate kinetic parameter estimates can lead to incorrect decisions about a lead compound's potential for success. It has become widely accepted that in certain CYP subfamilies more than one molecule can occupy the active site simultaneously, in some cases resulting in enhanced substrate turnover (heteroactivation). However, the specific mechanism(s) by which dual-compound binding results in heteroactivation remain unclear. It is known that orientation of the substrate in the active site, as dictated by interactions with active site residues, …

Putative Role Of Palmitate And Akt Signaling In Attenuating Skeletal Muscle Growth In The Obese Zucker Rat, Jonathan Michael Peterson May 2008

Putative Role Of Palmitate And Akt Signaling In Attenuating Skeletal Muscle Growth In The Obese Zucker Rat, Jonathan Michael Peterson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Obese zucker rat (OZR) is a model of obesity and metabolic syndrome, with a reduced skeletal muscle mass compared with the lean zucker rat (LZR). Growth and hypertrophy of muscle fibers critically depend on activation and differentiation of satellite cells into new myonuclei, as well as the prevention of myonuclear apoptosis. Akt is known to regulate satellite cell activation and differentiation and inhibit apoptotic signaling. Akt activity is also reduced in the OZR compared to the LZR. The present study had two primary purposes; first, to observe, in vitro, the effects of the saturated free fatty acid palmitate on …

Essays On Taxation And Space, Justin M. Ross May 2008

Essays On Taxation And Space, Justin M. Ross

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is composed of three essays in which each examine the response to taxation while carefully considering the role of space. In the first essay, I examine the behavior of property tax assessors among local governments to uncover sources of assessment bias. While typically not a formulator of policy, property assessors are likely sensitive to political incentives as they are either directly elected to their office or appointed by another elected official. This essay searches for sources of this pressure via its in influence on the assessment-to-sale price ratio from Virginia cities and counties in 2004. Among the more …

In Vitro Elucidation Of The Metabolic Fate Of The Anticancer Drug Busulfan, Islam Rasem Younis May 2008

In Vitro Elucidation Of The Metabolic Fate Of The Anticancer Drug Busulfan, Islam Rasem Younis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Busulfan is a bifunctional alkylating agent that is used to treat mylogenous leukemia. The major elimination pathway of busulfan is through glutathione-S-transferase (GST) catalyzed conjugation to form glutathione sulfonium conjugate. The aim of this work is to elucidate the novel metabolic pathways of busulfan that may explain its toxicity. The observed data showed that busulfan is not a substrate for CYP450. The sulfonium ion conjugate of busulfan was found to be inactive as it did not inhibit GST in human liver cytosol, did not react with 4-(4-nitrobenzyl)pyridine, did not induce apoptosis in NCI-H460 cells, and was not stable in basic …

Assessing The Limitations Of Oak In Osb, Brian D. Cox May 2008

Assessing The Limitations Of Oak In Osb, Brian D. Cox

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent studies show that oak logging residue makes up a disproportionate amount of the total residue left behind after the harvest (Grushecky et al. 2006). The majority of logging residue tends to be low-grade wood. A primary outlet for low-grade wood in WV is oriented strand board (OSB) mills. Currently, a very small percentage of oak species is utilized in OSB, largely due to the inability to produce quality strands from oak and partially due to the uncertainty of quantity that may be used in panels.;This research investigated the stranding of oak species along with utilizing oak strands in the …

Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention On The Attitudes Toward Sport Psychology Of Athletic Training Students, Damien Clement May 2008

Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention On The Attitudes Toward Sport Psychology Of Athletic Training Students, Damien Clement

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although previous research of athletes' attitudes toward sport psychology consulting (Anderson et al. 2004, Martin, 2005) has proven its usefulness, the literature seems to be lacking any similar assessment of athletic training students' attitudes toward sport psychology. Neither has the effectiveness of an educational intervention been assessed with regard to athletic training students' attitudes toward sport psychology. This is surprising given the important role that sport psychology plays in injury rehabilitation. As a result, the primary aim of the current study was to assess the attitudes of athletic training students toward sport psychology and, subsequently, determine the effectiveness of an …

Broadcasting In Cycles With Chords, Lisa L. Kovalchick May 2008

Broadcasting In Cycles With Chords, Lisa L. Kovalchick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Broadcasting is the process of information dissemination in which one node, the originator, knows a single piece of information and using a series of calls must inform every other node in the network of this information. We assume that at any given time, a node can communicate the message to another node, with which it shares an edge, by acting as either a sender or receiver, but not both. Multiple message broadcasting considers the case when the originator has m messages, where m > 1, to disseminate. Whereas broadcasting limits the communication of a message from one node to another node …

Relay Communications Over Frequency-Selective Fading Channels, John Paul Mazzie May 2008

Relay Communications Over Frequency-Selective Fading Channels, John Paul Mazzie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Wireless communications over long distances can be assisted by a third radio acting as a relay. If the relay is placed close to the source, then the source-relay link will be characterized as a fairly benign additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. However, the long distance link from relay to destination is susceptible to frequency-selective fading. This thesis explores the design and analysis of a particular relay communication system characterized by a low power source, a relay that is close to the source, and a frequency-selective channel from relay to destination. Because the direct link from source to destination is …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) is computer processing of images or signals acquired by sensors with the purpose to identify objects of interest (targets). This technology is a critical element for surveillance missions. Over the past several years there has been an increasing trend towards fielding swarms of unattended aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating as sensor networks in the air. This trend offers opportunities of integration ATR systems with a UAV-based sensor network to improve the recognition performance. This dissertation addresses some of design issues of ATR systems, explores recognition capabilities of sensor networks in the presence of various distortions and analyzes …

Evaluation Bias In Effort Estimation, Omid Jalali May 2008

Evaluation Bias In Effort Estimation, Omid Jalali

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There exists a large number of software effort estimation methods in the literature and the space of possibilities [54] is yet to be fully explored. There is little conclusive evidence about the relative performance of such methods and many studies suffer from instability in their conclusions. As a result, the effort estimation literature lacks a stable ranking of such methods.;This research aims at providing a stable ranking of a large number of methods using data sets based on COCOMO features. For this task, the COSEEKMO tool [46] was further developed into a benchmarking tool and several well-known effort estimation methods, …

Responsive Liquid Crystal Polymer Rods, Matthew S. Shafran May 2008

Responsive Liquid Crystal Polymer Rods, Matthew S. Shafran

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this dissertation I report on the successful fabrication of anisotropic liquid crystal polymer rods. These polymer rods demonstrated re-orientation by an applied external field. The polymer rods, 200 nm in diameter and a maximum of 60 mum in length, were produced by a template synthesis technique. A reactive liquid crystal monomer was filled into porous Anopore membranes which were used as a confining media. The liquid crystal monomer was polymerized by UV light while the liquid crystal remained in the nematic temperature range. The polymerization process permanently "freezes" the orientational order of the confined liquid crystal molecules, producing rods …

The Effects Of Residual Baylage Leachate On The Germination And Growth Of Orchardgrass (Dactylis Glomerata L.) And Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense L.)., Sheena R. Moore Jan 2008

The Effects Of Residual Baylage Leachate On The Germination And Growth Of Orchardgrass (Dactylis Glomerata L.) And Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense L.)., Sheena R. Moore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In early spring, areas of soil directly under baylage, spread for winter consumption by steers, is void of vegetation even after reseeding. This study was conducted to determine if: 1) residual baylage leachate is allelopathic to orchardgrass and red clover, 2) soil microorganisms have an effect on the toxicity of the leachate, and 3) toxicity decreases over time. Petri dishes, as well as potted soil/sand mixtures, were used to test for allelopathy. Leachate reduced seed germination and seedling length as compared to distilled water. There is evidence that soil microorganisms did not affect leachate toxicity. Toxicity of leachate to both …

Electrical Properties Of Strained 3c-Silicon Carbide/Silicon Heterostructures., Ronak Rahimi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this work, effects of strain and stress in heterostructures consisting of a few nanometers thin 3C-SiC films have been studied. Advances in epitaxial growth technology have enabled the development of high-quality thin film materials. Thin 3C-SiC films exhibit significantly different electrical behavior than the bulk material or the substrate itself, giving rise to a potential use of nano-thin films as surface sensors. In order to investigate the properties of thin film structures, nano-thin 3C-SiC layers were grown on n-type silicon substrates by Gas Source Molecular Beam Epitaxy (GSMBE). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) characterizations were …

Smooth Transitions: The Role Of Athletic Identity And Life Stress In The Freshman Student-Athlete And Non-Athlete Adjustment Process., Samantha J. Monda

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research in higher education has suggested that adjustment to college is a developmental process in which first year students must attend to certain developmental tasks in order to properly adjust to their new environment (Chickering & Reisser, 1993; Medalie, 1981). However, studentathletes have been noted are a special population within the student body that have unique experiences and needs (Etzel, Ferrante, & Pinkney, 1996). The purpose of this study was to examine the adjustment to college process of first year student-athletes and non-athletes and explore the influence of athletic identity and life stress on student-athlete adjustment to college. Surveys assessing …

The study of software architecture is gaining importance due to the critical role it plays in most methodologies of software engineering. Various architectural attributes including error propagation, change propagation, and requirements propagation can provide a wealth of information about software architectures and the quality of their products. Software product line engineering is a methodology of software engineering that emphasizes reusability, in a related family of products. PLAs are being developed by NASA for flight control, guidance, and navigation. The intersection of product line development and software architecture analysis raises unique problems, which make it difficult to analyze the quality of …

A New Method For Detection And Classification Of Out-Of-Control Signals In Autocorrelated Multivariate Processes., Tao Zhao Jan 2008

A New Method For Detection And Classification Of Out-Of-Control Signals In Autocorrelated Multivariate Processes., Tao Zhao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Autocorrelation results in too many out-of-control false alarms when traditional T2 control charts are used in practice. In this research, a vector autoregressive (VAR) based T 2 control chart is built to improve the effectiveness of the traditional T2 control charts when variables are autocorrelated and cross-correlated. Datasets generated by a SAS program are used to test the performance of the proposed method. Computational results showed that the proposed method outperforms the ARIMA based residual T2 control chart with respect to identification accuracy and average run length. Also, the results showed that the proposed method with principal components analysis is …

Authentic Education And The Innate Health Model: An Approach To Optimizing The Education Of The Whole Person., M Deborah Larimer Jan 2008

Authentic Education And The Innate Health Model: An Approach To Optimizing The Education Of The Whole Person., M Deborah Larimer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To test the premise that optimal learning and development require a constructivist education of the whole person, this research examined outcomes of instruction using an approach called Innate Health which claims that awareness of the dynamics of thought will stimulate healthy, productive behavior (presumably innate). While much has been written about socio-moral education; little research has addressed the role of thought, innate qualities, or attention to the whole person as mediators of learning and development. Two self-report scales (Understanding of Experience Scale, and Lifestyle Assessment Scale) were constructed to measure outcomes of instruction among participants in Innate Health seminars. Data …

Performance-Based Payments For Conservation: Experience From A Water Quality Field Experiment., Peter J. Maille Jan 2008

Performance-Based Payments For Conservation: Experience From A Water Quality Field Experiment., Peter J. Maille

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Conventional government cost-share programs to reduce agricultural nonpoint source pollution are falling short of water quality goals in the U.S. This dissertation presents lessons learned from the first 15 months of a field experiment that tests an alternative to conventional government programs. This alternative pays farmers as a group based on quantity and ambient quality of water flowing from their watershed. Farmers decide what, if any, abatement action to take and how to allocate payments among themselves. Three research questions were examined: (1) Prior to initiation of a field experiment, can water prices and a watershed payment formula be computed …

Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles Jan 2008

Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Job satisfaction is considered to be the most important and frequently examined outcome variable in congruence research. The assumption that congruence results in job satisfaction is fundamental to Holland's theory; however, the empirical evidence predominantly indicates that the congruence - job satisfaction correlation is, at best, equivocal. There is a movement within vocational psychology that the congruence construct is “dead” as a viable theoretical concept and that the field should abandon Holland's theory. This idea does not exist without significant argument, however. It has been recognized widely that congruence has not fared better in the empirical research literature because methodological …

Functional Domains Of P450 1a1 And 1a2: Molecular Modeling-Guided Structure-Function Study., Youbin Tu Jan 2008

Functional Domains Of P450 1a1 And 1a2: Molecular Modeling-Guided Structure-Function Study., Youbin Tu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cytochromes P450 are a large family of heme-thiolate enzymes which metabolize a wide variety of both endogenous and xenobiotic compounds. Human P450 1A1 and 1A2 are two major members of the P450 1A subfamily. They share 72% sequence identity but display different specificities towards various substrates. In order to further understand the structure-function relationships of these enzymes, we have performed several molecular modeling-based studies that examined various functional domains of P450 1As. In the first part of this project, we have investigated the ligand binding domain by developing a specificity prediction model based on the correlations between MD (Molecular Dynamics)-based …
