Droplet Impact Sub-Cavity Histories And Pdpa Spray Experiments For Spray Cooling Modeling, Nicholas Lee Hillen
Droplet Impact Sub-Cavity Histories And Pdpa Spray Experiments For Spray Cooling Modeling, Nicholas Lee Hillen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Spray cooling is a topic of current interest for its ability to uniformly remove high levels of waste heat from densely packed microelectronics. It has demonstrated the ability to achieve very high heat fluxes, up to 500 W/cm2 with water as the coolant, making it an attractive active thermal management tool.;Full Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of spray cooling are infeasible due to the complexity of the spray (drops fluxes of 106 drops/cm2-sec) and heater surface physics requiring impractical resources. Thus a Monte-Carlo (MC) spray cooling simulation model based on empirical data is under development to serve as a cost …

Probes Of Pulsar Emission Physics: The Double Pulsar And The Gamma-Ray Pulsar Population, Benetge Bhakthi Pranama Perera
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The double pulsar, PSR J0737-3039A/B, is a unique binary system in which both neutron stars have been detected as radio pulsars. We analyze the evolution of the radio emission from the second born, 2.8 s pulsar (pulsar B) based on five years of Green Bank Telescope data since 2003 December. We find that the pulse profile and the flux density of pulsar B change significantly over time, culminating in its radio emission disappearance towards our line of sight since 2008 March. Over this time, the flux density decreases dramatically and the pulse profile evolves from a single to a double …

Searches For Radio Pulsars & Fast Transients And Multiwavelength Studies Of Single-Pulse Emission, Mitchell B. Mickaliger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pulsars are excellent tools for studying a wide array of astrophysical phenomena (e.g. gravitational waves, the interstellar medium, general relativity), yet they are still not fully understood. What are their emission processes and how do they change at different energies? How is giant pulse emission different from regular emission? How are different classes of pulsars (RRATs, magnetars, nulling pulsars, etc.) related? Answering these questions will not only help us to understand pulsars in general, but will also help improve techniques for pulsar searches and timing, gravitational wave searches, and single-pulse searches. The work we present here aims to answer these …

Perceived Burdensomeness, Thwarted Belongingness And Acquired Capability For Suicide: Suicidal Risk Factors In An Incarcerated Population, Sarra Nazem
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in incarcerated individuals. Previous research suggests that prior suicidal behaviors, history of substance abuse/dependence, and depressive symptoms are common risk factors associated with death by suicide in incarcerated populations. Additionally, offenders who have committed violent crimes, are incarcerated in higher security institutions, and have longer sentences are also at increased risk for suicide. Although research has identified risk factors for suicidal behaviors, there has been very little theory-driven research on suicidal behaviors in incarcerated populations. Joiner's interpersonal theory of suicide (Joiner, 2005; Van Orden et al., 2010) may be an especially …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The translation of therapeutic agents for ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury from the preclinical laboratory to clinical trials has been fraught with failure as evident by the 1,000+ preclinical studies that have failed to translate to a proven therapeutic clinically. Numerous potential reasons for these shortcomings have been identified and include the use of animal models that fail to capture clinically relevant risk factors or injury parameters, targeting of pathological events occurring rapidly after injury but before the likely time of patient presentation for treatment, emphasis on acute rather than chronic outcome measures, and mismatch in outcome measures used …
An Investigation Of Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis Using A Trigonometric Potential, James Vopal
An Investigation Of Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis Using A Trigonometric Potential, James Vopal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traveling-wave electrophoresis, a technique for microfluidic separations in lab-on-achip devices, is investigated using a trigonometric model that naturally incorporates the spatial periodicity of the device. Traveling-wave electrophoresis can be used to separate high-mobility ions from low-mobility ions in forensic and medical applications, with a separation threshold that can be tuned for specific applications by simply choosing the traveling wave frequency. Our simulations predict plateaus in the average ion velocity verses the mobility, plateaus that correspond to Farey fractions and yield Devil's staircases for non-zero discreteness values. The plateaus indicate that ions with different mobilities can travel with the same average …

A Study Of Exploiting Objectness For Robust Online Object Tracking, Raghu Kiran Yalamanchili
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tracking is a fundamental problem in many computer vision applications. Despite the progress over the last decade, there still exist many challenges especially when the problem is posed in real world scenarios (e.g., cluttered background, occluded objects). Among them drifting has been widely observed to be a problem common to the class of online tracking algorithms - i.e., when challenges such as occlusion or nonlinear deformation of the object occurs, the tracker might lose the target completely in subsequent frames in an image sequence. In this work, we propose to exploit the objectness to partially alleviate the drifting problem with …
