Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The International Index Of Erectile Function (Iief-5) (Shim) Questionnaire On The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Erectile Dysfunction, Evelyn Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Thirty million or 52% of males between 40 and 70 years of age in the United States have some degree of erectile dysfunction (ED) (Feldman et al., 1994; Hakim, Subit, Kandzari, & ZasLau, 2002; Tsertsvadze et al., 2009). The American Urology Association (AUA) outlines measures to slow the rate of, control, and treat ED. To decrease the prevalence, ED must be diagnosed, identified, and the major risk factors aggressively controlled. Utilization of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) may improve identification and documentation of treatment, but questions remain about how to implement CPGs in practice. The purpose of this pilot project was …

The purpose of this study is to explore why and how two low-income families practice homeschooling. A qualitative case study of low-income homeschooling mothers' experiences was conducted over the course of four months in Tennessee and West Virginia. The major research question was: How and why working class families decide to homeschool their children? Specifically, I believed that a qualitative examination of this topic would allow me to answer a number of attendant questions:;1. How and why do local contexts of "choice" shape low-income homeschoolers' experiences? a. How do local public school experiences shape homeschooling experiences, motivations, and practices? b. …

Development Of Hydrogel Tracer Beads And Comparative Tracer Tests To Better Understand Contaminant Fate And Transport In Karst Systems, Amanda Laskoskie May 2013

Development Of Hydrogel Tracer Beads And Comparative Tracer Tests To Better Understand Contaminant Fate And Transport In Karst Systems, Amanda Laskoskie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Karst aquifers can be highly susceptible to contamination due to a close connection to the land surface, lack of filtration through a soil zone, and rapid transmission along solutionally-enhanced flowpaths. These factors also allow for aquifer contamination by direct injection of immiscible organic compounds in the form of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). The fate and transport of NAPLs in karst aquifers is poorly understood. Tracer tests allow for qualitative characterization of hydraulic flow in the surface and subsurface, but their results may not be applicable to the movement of NAPL for which density plays a critical role. Particulate tracers have …

Evaluation Of The Newburg Sandstone Of The Appalachian Basin As A Co2 Geologic Storage Resource, Jack Eric Lewis May 2013

Evaluation Of The Newburg Sandstone Of The Appalachian Basin As A Co2 Geologic Storage Resource, Jack Eric Lewis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The West Virginia Division of Energy is currently evaluating several deep saline formations in the Appalachian basin of West Virginia, which may be potential carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration targets. The Silurian Newburg Sandstone play, developed in the 1970's, primarily involves natural gas production from reservoir rock with welldeveloped porosity and permeability. High initial pressures encountered in early wells in the Newburg indicate that the overlying Silurian Salina Formation provides a competent seal. Due to the large number of CO2 point sources in the region and the favorable reservoir properties of the formation; including an estimated 300 billion cubic feet (bcf) …

Using Empathy In Design To Foster Interest In Social Issues, Kofi Opoku May 2013

Using Empathy In Design To Foster Interest In Social Issues, Kofi Opoku

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Design has transformed from being merely a product oriented discipline focused on the promotion of consumer goods to become a goal oriented practice seeking to address the needs and challenges faced by people in their communities. Conventionally, most designers have engaged various processes that help identify the real needs of an audience in order to develop effective solutions. Designing for social change presents the interesting challenge of reaching audience members who may not be directly affected by an issue to become invested in communityled transformations. My thesis uses the context of homelessness to examine how empathic techniques can be employed …

Aging Effects Of The Cathode And Determination Of Single Electrode Performance In A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Xiaoke Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising electrochemical energy conversion devices due to their advantages of high theoretical efficiency, fuel flexibility (including hydrogen and carbon monoxide), scalability, and low emission. An important problem for commercially using the SOFCs is to improve the long term stability for the SOFCs. To improve the lifetime of SOFCs and develop innovative electrode microstructures; we need to understand the individual process including the degradation processes to the cathode or the anode. To identify the independent anode and cathode contributions to the total impedance, one conventional electrochemical tool for evaluation is the reference electrode. Although reference …

Early And Late Stage Mechanisms For Vocalization Processing In The Human Auditory System, William James Talkington May 2013

Early And Late Stage Mechanisms For Vocalization Processing In The Human Auditory System, William James Talkington

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The human auditory system is able to rapidly process incoming acoustic information, actively filtering, categorizing, or suppressing different elements of the incoming acoustic stream. Vocalizations produced by other humans (conspecifics) likely represent the most ethologically-relevant sounds encountered by hearing individuals. Subtle acoustic characteristics of these vocalizations aid in determining the identity, emotional state, health, intent, etc. of the producer. The ability to assess vocalizations is likely subserved by a specialized network of structures and functional connections that are optimized for this stimulus class. Early elements of this network would show sensitivity to the most basic acoustic features of these sounds; …

Spring Studies And A Decision-Making Process To Guide Groundwater Contamination Prevention In An Agricultural Karst Basin, Erin D. Murphy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Groundwater contamination is a potential major health and environmental issue in karst aquifers because of rapid surface water to groundwater connections and conduit-dominated flow that may allow contaminants to move great distances from their source in a very short amount of time. Agricultural contaminants are a significant problem in Buckeye Creek basin in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Pasquarell and Boyer (1995) found that cattle grazing near sinking streams, sinkholes, and springs contribute to the elevated levels of fecal coliform bacteria in the groundwater. Six sites in Buckeye Creek basin were monitored for fecal coliform contamination and then analyzed in order …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Beginning in the late 1960s and continuing through the 1970s, thousands of people migrated from America's cities to the countryside to establish communes and independent homesteads on small plots of land. By working the land they hoped to achieve autonomy, self-sufficiency, and closeness with nature. Cheap land, mild climate, beautiful scenery, and folk culture drew many of these predominately young, white, well educated, and affluent migrants to Appalachia. During the earliest years of the back-to-the-land migration suspicion and occasionally conflict surfaced as natives and newcomers navigated different lifestyle preferences and worldviews, for many of the back-to-the-landers, or "alter-natives," had identified …

Accelerating Moea Non-Dominated Sorting By Preserving Archival Relationships, Joseph Axilrod Craig May 2013

Accelerating Moea Non-Dominated Sorting By Preserving Archival Relationships, Joseph Axilrod Craig

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Non-dominated sorting is an important part of many multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). It is used to determine which individuals to keep in the archive of best individuals between generations and to evaluate fitness for breeding. Because this sorting is performed after every generation, it can contribute significantly to the running time of an MOEA. If the population size is sufficiently large, the time spent sorting the population can come to dominate an MOEA's running time.;The non-dominated sorting algorithms in the literature propose optimizations that focus on skipping unnecessary comparisons among individuals. While these algorithms provide different means for skipping these …

This study evaluated the effect of TCE concentration in different types of reactors on the distribution of selected microorganisms with distance from the source …

Economic Demagoguery: The Limited Effects Of Presidential Rhetoric, Charles Damien Arthur May 2013

Economic Demagoguery: The Limited Effects Of Presidential Rhetoric, Charles Damien Arthur

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Given that there exists considerable disagreement about whether the president has a direct and measurable influence over the economy, I decided to research this divergence of views further (Edwards, 2003; Edwards, 2009; Eshbaugh-Soha, 2005; Wood, 2007; Dolan, Frendreis, & Tatalovich, 2008; Cohen, 1995; Beck, 1982; Golden & Poterba, 1980). In my review of the literature, I found that there is research, improperly measured from my perspective, that claims the president is the most powerful economic leader in the United States and that his words have the power to move economic actors and indicators (Wood, 2007). To show these effects statistically, …
