Management And Staff Development: Carl Workshop Proceedings, Jo Bell Whitlatch, Celia Bakke, Judy Reynolds

Staff development is a relatively new addition to the traditional responsibilities of managers. Managers have always been concerned about production and quality of product but not so formally about staff development responsibilities. Library workers themselves did not have all of the expectations about being developed on the job. The workshop theme also touches on such issues as the professional role, collective bargaining, and the effects of new and rapid developments in library technology upon management.

We show that the finiteness of the moment generating function is necessary for the finiteness of the lim sup of the moving averages considered by Shepp (1964). This also implies that the same must be true for the Erdos-Renyi law of large numbers.

The Faretta Principle: Self Representation Versus The Right To Counsel, Paul Marcus

The United States Constitution makes provision for criminal defendants to be represented by counsel. In the federal jurisdiction this principle was vigorously applied, even to indigent persons, very early in the Twentieth Century. The United States Supreme Court, however, was reluctant to impose this requirement on the states except in cases of unusual circumstances where the absence of counsel would have affected the basic fairness of the trial. Finally, in a landmark decision by the Supreme Court, it was held that the right to counsel applies in both federal and state cases. For the past twenty years, federal and state …

This independent study module is intended to introduce business administration students and managers to business information available in books; periodicals; and other library sources; and to teach library search strategies for the acquisition of needed information with a minimum expenditure of time. The module consists of six parts. The first three begin with specific objectives and end with exercises on locating books on business topics using (1) the card catalog; (2) indexes and abstracts; and (3) general business reference works. Twenty successfully field tested learning activities are designed to help junior high school students develop skills in reading social studies materials; critical thinking; geography; and history. Each self-contained activity includes background information; examples; and student exercises. Activities for improving content readings focus on key words; sexist words; social studies terms; important facts; and who; what; where; when; how; and why questions. To develop critical thinking skills; students complete exercises using flow charts; objective questions to ask for specific information; ratings; and sources of information concerning the achievements of significant persons. William D. Kuhre was orphaned at a young age and grew up having few recollections of his parents. William's parents had joined the Mormon Church and moved to the small town of Ephraim, Utah in 1862. War broke out with the Ute Indians in 1865, after several years of increasingly hostile interactions. While the town of Ephraim was protected by a large stone wall, families had to leave the protection to collect firewood and harvest crops. One unfortunate day, while William’s parents were gathering potatoes outside the city wall, a band of Black Hawk’s men arrived and killed them, leaving …
