Using58Ni+50Cr and58Ni+54Fe reactions and on-line mass separation, the new isotopes103Sn and105Sn with half-lives of 7±3 s and 31±6 s, respectively, were identified via their beta-delayed proton decays. The relative yields and the possibility of reaching101Sn are discussed. © 1981 Springer-Verlag.

Metrizability And The Frechet-Urysohn Property In Topological Groups, Peter J. Nyikos

A question of Arhangel'skii, whether weakly first countable topological groups are metrizable, is answered in two ways: if the Hausdorff axiom is assumed, the answer is yes, but in general a weakly first countable topological group need not be pseudometrizable. The former result is obtained as a corollary of a more general sufficient condition for a sequential group to be Fr&chet-Urysohn. A general necessary and sufficient condition for a sequential group to be Frechet-Urysohn is given, and a number of questions are raised. Examples are given to show in what respect the theorems of the paper are the "best possible".

Anthropological concepts, which have been taken out of context and applied without full understanding, have been misused by historians of colonial North America. Part of the difficulty is due to the normal hazards of incorporating the work of another field in one's own; and part is due to the reluctance of historians to employ monothematic explanations. This latter difficulty has led historians to favor those concepts of anthropology which are not easily measured.

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling In 1-Μm Nb Josephson Junctions, Richard F. Voss, Richard A. Webb

The probability distributions for switching out of the superconducting state of low-cur-rent-density 1-μm Nb Josephson junctions with capacitance ≈ 0.1 pF have been measured as a function of temperature T down to 3 mK. Below 100 mK the distribution widths become independent of T. The results are in excellent agreement with predictions for the quantum tunneling of the (macroscopic) junction phase that include the reduction of tunneling rates due to dissipation.

Band Crossing And The Prealignment B(E2) Anomaly In 126Ba, J. P. Draayer, C. S. Han, K. J. Weeks, K. T. Hecht

A theoretical interpretation of the reduction in E2 strengths in 126Ba prior to backbending is presented. A shell model basis is built from normal parity orbilals organized into multiplets of a pseudo SU(3) symmetry coupled to h 11 2 configurations restricted to states of seniority zero and two. Within the framework of the model the scattering of a pair of protons from normal parity to the h 11 2 orbital produces band crossing and a corresponding reduction in E2 transition strengths prior to pair alignment which is the principal mechanism of the backbending. © 1981.

This paper outlines and recommends a distinctively LDS approach to the ancient questions about reason and revelation in religious communities. It treats the variety of spiritual experience and distinguishes them from sentimentality and other pseudo spiritual experiences. It also explains how reason and revelation are important helps for one another and how better education can help individuals use reason and science to strengthen the role of revelation in their lives.

Certain models of the interpreter’s self-understanding within the interpretive task might be found more in keeping than others with the common life of the church, its nurture and preservation. I will explore several models of the interpreter’s self-understanding of the interpretive task, pair them with the corresponding understanding of the text and evaluate their usefulness for interpreting.

Since 1975 when the former Department of Health, Education and Welfare (hereinafter referred to as HEW) initially promulgated regulations pursuant to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (hereinafter referred to as Title IX), four Courts of Appeals and numerous District Courts have declared invalid the Title IX regulations governing the employment practices and policies of educational institutions. In an attempt to avoid administrative chaos resulting from enforcement inconsistencies, the Justice Department petitioned the Supreme Court to review the decisions of the First, Sixth and Eighth Circuits. Protons and deuterons from the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) tandem Van de Graaff of energies 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 MeV were scattered from foils of Al, Ni, Mo, and Ta having thicknesses of 6.14 to 47 mg/cm2. Multiple scattering angular distributions were measured using a position-sensitive detector to collect data at nine different angles simultaneously. Gaussian curves were fitted to the central points of the distributions and the Θ1/e angles thus derived are presented graphically. The data points are compared with calculations using a common method of determining multiple scattering angles. An empirical correction for extending this method into …

Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis is a highly versatile method of element analysis. Thus it is well suited for use as a complement to other methods of analysis in experimental programs requiring both chemical and elemental analyses. This paper reports some results of two projects where PIXE was used in conjunction with titration calorimetry, ion chromatography, atomic absorption spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and some other methods. The first is a study of sulfur chemistry in a copper smelter plume. Arsenic was found to be a conservative tracer of the plume and was used for calculation of …

This is the Third Annual Report on the independent evaluation of the California Master Plan for Special Education, which was mandated in Assembly Bill 1250 and Senate Bill 1870. It contains the findings from follow-up studies in six Master Plan (MP) and four non-Master Plan (NMP) areas during 1979-80. The findings are based on responses of administrators, support personnel, and special education and regular classroom teachers to question­ naires and to questions asked during interviews conducted by SRI staff mem­ bers during 1-week visits to each of the 10 sites.
