Science for elementary school grades K-6 varies somewhat in content from one textbook series to another, but it is fairly common that 40-60% of the material covered is directly related to physics. These texts suggest that certain learning activities such as experiments, demonstrations, and observations be carried out by the teacher and the class. Often the apparatus for a learning activity is to be constructed from simple, readily available materials. The typical elementary school teacher has had little experience in performing experiments and is often frustrated in his/her attempts at carrying out the suggested learning activity. This article discusses decisions of the new Eleventh Circuit and also decisions of the former Fifth Circuit, some of which are binding precedents for the new court. By way of introduction, the title Constitutional Criminal Procedure deserves amplification. Mississippi is a major producer of manufactured forest products, and most of the timber required by Mississippi's forest industry is produced and harvested within the State. A severance tax on timber harvested in Mississippi is paid to the Mississippi State Tax Commission, and annual reports of timber removals are prepared by the Commission.

Tort Law: Expanding The Scope Of Recovery Without Loss Of Jury Control, David A. Fischer

This article will analyze the types of changes that are taking place by examining three expanding areas of tort law: liability for negligently inflicted mental distress, negligently inflicted pure pecuniary loss, and harm caused by defective products. This examination will demonstrate that the scope of liability can be increased in at least two ways. One is by formally expanding the scope of existing causes of action, e.g., relaxing arbitrary barriers to liability or expanding the type of damages which may be recovered. A second method is by relaxing judicial control over the jury. This relaxation of control can take place …

Although it is the fourth largest producer of tobacco in the world, relatively little has been written about the problem in the USSR. Since the economy is centrally planned and marketing of tobacco products is under direct government control it might be expected that the Soviet Union would implement different, perhaps, more effective, antismoking campaigns. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.

The Soviet Union has experienced an increase in the incidence of coronary heart disease over the last 15 years sufficient to result in an overall deterioration in the health of adults. The distribution of coronary risk factors, and the secular trends in diet and cigarette consumption provide a potential explanation for the upsurge in death rates. The animal fat content of the Soviet diet has been steadily enriched since the 1950s and cigarette production increased 72 per cent from 1959 to 1980. Let γ be the Gaussian white noise on S* with the characteristic functional γ(ξ) = exp{-∥ξ∥2/2}, ξ ∈ S, where ∥·∥ is the L2(R)-norm. Let ν be the Poisson white noise on S* with the characteristic functional ν(ξ) = expΥ{hooked}R∫R {[exp(iξ(t)u)] - 1 - (1 + u2)-1(iξ(t)u)} dη(u)dt), ξ ∈ S, where the Lévy measure is assumed to satisfy the condition ∫Ru2dη(u) < ∞. It is proved that γ*ν has the same dichotomy property for shifts as the Gaussian white noise, i.e., for any ω ∈ S*, the shift (γ*ν)ω of γ*ν by ω and γ*ν are either equivalent or orthogonal. From an integer-valued function f we obtain, in a natural way, a matroid Mf on the domain of f. We show that the class of matroids so obtained is closed under restriction, contraction, duality, truncation and elongation, but not under direct sum. We give an excluded-minor characterization of and show that consists precisely of those transversal matroids with a presentation in which the sets in the presentation are nested. A random graph on n vertices is a random subgraph of the complete graph on n vertices. By analogy with this, the present paper studies the asymptotic properties of a random submatroid ωr of the projective geometry PG(r— 1, q). The main result concerns Kr, the rank of the largest projective geometry occurring as a submatroid of ωr. We show that with probability one, for sufficiently large r, Krtakes one of at most two values depending on r. This theorem is analogous to a result of Bollobás and Erdös on the clique number of a random graph. However, whereas from …

Dirac and Halin have shown for n = 2 and n = 3 respectively that a minimally n-connected graph G has at least ((n-1)|V(G)|-2n)/(2n-1) vertices of degree n. This paper determines the graphs which are extremal with respect to these two results and, in addition, establishes a similar extremal result for minimally connected matroids. © 1982.

A theory for distributional boundary values of harmonic and analytic functions is presented. In this analysis there arise several indicators that measure the growth of these functions near the boundaries. An extension of the Phragmén-Lindelöf maximum principle is derived. Furthermore, the algebraic properties of the space of real periodic distributions are studied. By introducing a new product, the harmonic product, the boundary conditions involving harmonic functions are transformed into ordinary differential equations. © 1982.

It is shown that, in abelian l-groups, each morphism to a complete vector lattice extends over any majorizing embedding. This extends a result of the first author for Archimedean f-algebras with identity, and the recent Luxemburg-Schep theorem for vector lattices, and solves a problem of Conrad and McAlister. The proof presented here differs substantially from the Luxem- burg-Schep proof. Ours uses the Yosida representation and Gleason’s theorem on topological projectivity—this is novel, and seems relatively economical and transparent. The l-group theorem is shown to imply, and with some modestly categorical machinery, to be implied by, certain similar statements in subcategories …

The article presents a study related to the newspaper errors. Deep probe of disagreements suggests errors are really differences of opinion between sources and reporters. Research on newspaper accuracy has shown that news sources contend that about half the newspaper articles citing them contain at least one mistake, usually a misquote, omission or distorted emphasis. But, most of the half dozen studies which examined errors in newspapers excluded the reporter from the analysis, concentrating almost entirely on the perceptions of news sources.
