This presentation points to socialists’ mistaken assumptions of a malleable and perfectible human nature as an insuperable reason for the inevitable failure of socialist systems. It also points to socialist and liberal dependence on declarations of human rights as ineffective protections for human freedom—protections which can only be maintained in constitutionalist systems with deeper structural safeguards against tyranny.

Expressions for that portion of the heat flux which is due to composition gradients in multicomponent nonelectrolyte liquid mixtures have been formulated in terms of heats of transport. The resultant thermal energy equation in combination with component mass balance equations constitute coupled partial differential equations descriptive of the diffusion thermoeffect in liquid mixtures. These equations were solved with a double perturbation technique subject to initial and boundary conditions consistent with experimental design conditions considered appropriate for successful measurement of multicomponent heats of transport. Heats of transport in ternary nonelectrolyte liquid mixtures have been directly measured for the first time. Diffusion thermoeffect measurements have been made for ternary mixtures of toluene-chlorobenzene-bromobenzene at 25 degrees and 35 degrees C. A new boundary sharpening technique was used in addition to a liquid gate withdrawal method. Both techniques yield consistent, accurate values of the heat of transport, but the new cell provides versatility in allowable densities and compositions of the initial phases. Heats of transport were obtained by nonlinear least-squares fitting of calculated to experimental temperature differences measured at positions symmetric about the initial diffusional interface. Nearly everyone concedes that Egypt is faced with a serious food problem. The Egyptian agricultural sector is unable to feed the increasing and more affluent population. In 1980, agricultural output was estimated to be increasing by about 2.0 percent annually, whereas the country's annual population growth rate was estimated at about 2.3 percent. If the difference in these growth rates continues, Egypt must increase imports each year just to maintain per capita consumption at the present level [3].

Rice is both heavily subsidized and rationed in Egypt. This policy has significant distributive effects and especially benefits low income consumers in both urban and rural areas of the country. In addition, the policy has important allocative effects in shifting scarce resources to inefficient uses. This paper attempts to measure the economic inefficiency associated with this policy in order that the policy makers may judge better whether or not the distributive benefits are worth the efficiency costs.

The suitability of pseudo SU(3) strong coupled wave functions in representing the normal parity part of yrast eigenstates of systems with protons and neutrons filling different major shells and interacting with one another via a Qπ · Qν interaction is explored. In addition, we find that the overlaps of yrast eigenstates of H with the leading SU(3) symmetry follow the correlation of Q · Q with H very closely and are large even when Qπ · Qν contributes less than half to the full width of the eigenvalue spectrum of H. This dissertation suggests that the Christian Church has expanded most rapidly when the outreach and nurture functions of the Church have been organized and promoted by separate structures that relate to each other in three ways: (1) they are semi-autonomous in decision making, (2) they share a common purpose and objective, and (3) they have an agreed upon common reference point.

This model for semi-autonomous congregational and mission structures is then supported by detailing the relationship between the Antioch Church and Paul's apostolic bands. Similar cases of semi-autonomy between the two structures in church history are then cited to further …

The new neutron-rich isotopes 179Yb and 181,182Lu were produced in multinucleon transfer reactions by irradiating natW/Ta targets with 9 MeV u 136Xe ions, and identified by mass separation and decay spectroscopy. The measured half-lives of 179Yb, 181Lu and 182Lu are 8.1±0.8, 3.5±0.3 and 2.0±0.2 min, respectively. The properties of the excited states of 181,182Hf are discussed. The possibility of studying neutron-rich nuclei outside the classical fission-product regions is demonstrated. © 1982.

Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., is a first step toward dealing with a serious but sporadic insect problem. Two approaches, one utilizing readily available resource data, the other employing data obtained from aerial photographs, illustrate application of current knowledge to meet the protection needs of resource management-the primary role of integrated pest management. During a 36-month period in Louisiana, high-risk stands accounted for 13.4 infestations per 1,000 acres, four times the rate of low-risk stands; in Texas high-risk stands accounted for 9 .9 infestations per 1 ,000 acres during 1973-1978, almost five times the …

A battery calorimeter was built for the measurement of thermal energy generation of high-temperature lithium–aluminum/iron sulfide battery cells, which are under development for electric vehicle propulsion and other energy storage applications. The calorimeter was designed with a temperature range of 400˚–500˚C, a detection limit of 1 mW, and an upper limit of heat flow of 50 W. The results of measurements on 200-Ah LiAl/FeS cells were in excellent agreement with the predictions of thermodynamic calculations based on precise measurements of the total cell polarization and the temperature coefficient of the emf. Campaign Contributions And Congressional Voting: A Simultaneous Probit-Tobit Model, Henry W. Chappell Jr.

Full-information maximum likelihood (FIML) estimates of the simultaneous probit-Tobit (SPT) model suggest that effects of campaign contributions on voting are smaller than single equation probit estimates would indicate. The author has generally unable to conclude that contributions have a significant impact on voting decisions, apparently votes are most often decided on the basis of personal ideology or preferences of constituents. These findings differ markedly from earlier results of economists Gary C. Durden and Jonathan J. Silberman, whose single equation models showed a substantial impact of contributions on voting decisions. Despite the lack of significance according to model SPT, it would …

An object-space hidden-line algorithm for higher-dimensional scenes has been designed and implemented. Scenes consist of convex hulls of any dimension, each of which is compared against the edges of all convex hulls not eliminated by a hyperdimensional clipper, a depth test after sorting and a minimax text. Hidden and visible elements are determined in accordance with the dimensionality of the selected viewing hyperspace. When shape alone is the attribute of interest, hidden-line elimination need be performed only in that hyperspace. Conductance has been studied in metal-oxide-silicon field-effect transistor accumulation-layer samples in which it is possible to constrict the channel to small dimensions both perpendicular to the surface and perpendicular to the channel. A temperature-dependent conductance σ=σ₀exp[-(T₀/T)ⁿ] is observed, where n=1/2 for small channel widths and n=1/3 for larger channel widths. It is believed that this behavior arises from a transition from one-dimensional to two-dimensional variable-range hopping in the sample.

Behavioral And Genetic Diversity During Dispersal: Analysis Of A Polymorphic Esterase Locus In Southern Pine Beetle, Dendroctonus Frontalis, L. Zack Florence, Paul C. Johnson, Jack E. Coster

Dispersal behavior of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), in response to synthetic aggregating pheromone (frontalin) indicates an exponential decrease in response with distance from the site of emergence. Differential response during dispersal among genotypes at a polymorphic esterase locus was found by using starch gel electrophoresis. These differences produced allelic distributions that predict increased genetic diversity concurrent with increasing dispersal distance from the source population.
