Hydrodynamic fluctuations in a dilute gas subjected to a constant heat flux are studied by both a computer simulation and the Landau-Lifshitz formalism. The latter explicitly incorporates the boundary conditions of the finite system, thus permitting quantitative comparison with the former. Good agreement is demonstrated.

Several family systems therapists have discussed the value of observing families' spatial relationships as an aid in diagnosing family structure and processes. For example, Haley (1976) notes that: "When the family members seat themselves, sometimes the organization of the family is clarified" (p. 18). Minuchin (1974) also discusses the same idea when he writes: "When the family sits down, the family therapist should pay attention to how they position themselves. Often their placement can give him some hunches about family affiliations" (p. 207). The general idea behind this concept is that families often reveal a good deal about themselves in …

Simultaneous System Identification And Decision-Directed Detection And Estimation Of Jump Inputs To Linear Systems, Wynn C. Stirling

A decision-directed approach is presented for analyzing linear systems with unknown jump inputs. The system model parameters are estimated using a Kalman filter, and an empirical Bayes detection procedure is introduced to set the detector parameters, resulting in a decision-directed generalized likelihood ratio test coupled with recursive system parameter estimation. Monte Carlo results are presented to validate the performance of the algorithm.

Anneal Induced Changes In Amorphous Semiconductor Multilayers, David D. Allred, Jesus González-Hernández, O. V. Nguyen

We have prepared, heat treated and characterized various amorphous semiconductor periodic multilayers and ultrathin films. These were prepared by several vapor deposition techniques at substrate temperatures ranging from 25°C to 300°C and possessed periodicities from 22 to 400Å. Films were subjected to isochronal thermal treatments at progressively higher temperatures. Two effects were observed: enhanced diffusion and retarded crystallization. Interdiffusion, at rates which are many orders of magnitude higher than those anticipated from crystalline data, was observed in a-Si/a-Ge multilayers. Crystallization of germanium, the more readily crystallized member of the couple, is retarded; the extent depends on the thickness of the …

Making use of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, we give a new proof of the following theorem of Pekarski: If f' is in L log L on a finite interval, then f can be approximated in the uniform norm by rational functions of degree n to an error 0(1/n) on that interval.

The authors briefly describe the use of multidimensional scaling (MDS) in counseling. They discuss types of data that have been analyzed using MDS, kinds of MDS, analyses, and the interpretation of MDS results and review MDS research relevant to vocational, family, group, and individual counseling. Ethics concerns every aspect of human life. This, logically, issues out of the Biblical view of the unity of human nature. Education, while compartmentalized didactically for the purpose of specialization, cannot be complete unless some interdisciplinary and essentially human needs are met as well. Seventh-day Adventist graduates in colleges Should not be only excellent nurses, skillful secretaries, money-making businessmen but also outstanding Christians within their vocation. The classic opposition of legal positivism and natural law theory resurfaces continually and reminds us that we have yet to resolve this key conflict in our ways of understanding the moral authority of law. The strengths and weaknesses of the two theories are reviewed—both have fatal flaws. Conventionalism is proposed as a means of finding internal standards in a man-made system of law. The naturally emerging standards for a conventionalist system of law turn out to be the already familiar principles of the rule of law.

This article discusses a basic architecture for a user interface management system and the problem of updating a display in response to interactive commands. The basic architecture is then extended to include basic editing and browsing processes on arbitrary data structures. Editing templates are presented as a technique embodying the entire manipulation process for a particular data structure/data display combination. In conjuction with the user interface management system, Such templates are able to automatically provide a majority of the code required in an interactive applicaton.

Specimens of the new species Pinuxylon wollardii have been collected from Miocene strata near Kurkee, OR. These petrified specimens are unique in that, due to weathering, individual tracheids and ray cells can be separated for detailed SEM studies. This species is characterized by its high number of ray cells; numerous rays; large resin ducts which are commonly paired; primarily uniseriate pitting, two to five (usually three) small, oval or cirular pinoid pits per crossfield; and smooth walls on its transverse (ray) tracheids. The latter character relates this species to taxa in the subgenus Haploxylon of Pinus. Pinuxylon woolardii is most …

Some features of short field-reversed configuration (FRC) equilibria relevant to transport and stability are studied numerically and analytically. It is shown that magnetic field curvature effects significantly increase the FRC magnetization for plasma elongations epsilon is less than or equal to 4.
