In molecular biology, two finite sequences are compared by displaying one sequence written over another in an alignment. The number of alignments of two sequences is related to the Stanton-Cowan numbers. This paper gives asymptotics for the number of alignments of two sequences of length n with matching sections of size at least b.

Water-Cover Influences On Diatom Ingestion Rates By Meiobenthic Copepods, Alan W. Decho

Laboratory experiments on meiobenthic copepods using ¹⁴C-diatoms were conducted to investigate whether: (1) feeding rates or (2) food sources (planktonically-suspended foods or benthic sediment-associated foods) vary in response to the presence or absence of water-cover (i.e. simulated Higher-water vs Low-water conditions). Three diatom-feeding harpacticoids were examined. Scottolana canadensis feeds at significantly higher rates (2x) during Higher-water (HW) conditions (P<0.001), at which time it consumes planktonic foods; during Low-water (LW), feeding is greatly reduced. These feeding patterns are related to its burrow-dwelling and to its subtidal habitat. Cletocamptus deitersi remains virtually unaffected by changes in ambient water-cover, feeding at nearly equal rates during HW and LW conditions but always tending to consume more benthic diatoms. Research on human expertise in auditing contexts is an important area of study. Our objective in this paper is to present an approach to conducting research on human expertise. We begin with some issues of terminology and then propose a strategy for inquiry into the phenomena of expertise. Finally, we attempt to illustrate this strategy with three examples of recently completed work. The examples include: two from the auditing literature that involve the analysis of internal control and a medical diagnosis case which illustrates the "garden path" problem that is of concern in any decision making context, including auditing.

Heats Of Transport From The Diffusion Thermoeffect In Binary Liquid Mixtures Of Toluene, Chlorobenzene, And Bromobenzene, Richard L. Rowley, M. D. Hall

Measurements of heats of transport in binary liquid mixtures of toluene, chlorobenzene, and bromobenzene utilizing the diffusion thermoeffect, or Dufour effect, are reported at 298 and 308 K. The corresponding heat-mass Onsager doefficients are also reported, from which thermal diffusion ratios have been calculated based on Onsager reciprocity. The resultant binary thermal diffusion ratios have been correlated as a function of composition in an attempt to study the relationship between values in binary and ternary mixtures. A variational formulation is used to consider thermal equilibrium and stability for a cylindrical plasma modeled by dissipative magnetohydrodynamics. The parameter dependence of equilibrium solutions and their stability is followed using homotopy techniques. Solution branches and their connections are studied in relation to the applied fields.

The effect of chloride on paramagnetic coupling of manganese in the oxygen-evolving complex of CaCl2--washed PS II preparations was examined using Q-band ESR. When these PS II preparations were depleted of chloride, a strong 6-line ESR signal characteristic of protein-bound, uncoupled manganese was observed. Incubation at high chloride concentrations caused the disappearance of this signal. By repeated removal and addition of chloride, the signal could be cycled on and off without loss of bound manganese. When in a chloride-depleted state, the ESR-detectable protein-bound manganese could be removed by treatment with EDTA. Subsequent heating of EDTA-treated preparations revealed a second pool …

Measurements of the temperature and carrier-density dependence of the strongly localized conductance of short silicon inversion layers are reported. At the lowest temperatures we observe well-isolated, large conductance peaks whose width and temperature dependence are only consistent with resonant tunneling and are inconsistent with Mott hopping. Several new features are observed which we believe may be the result of Coulomb interactions.

The concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were followed for 35 days in cell-free liquid medium containing 100, 50, or 0% Murashige-Skoog (MS) salt base. Although the concentrations of NAA or 2,4-D remained constant the level of IAA decreased to only 11% of the original concentration after 35 days in the presence of 100% MS salt base. The observed rate of IAA degradation was accelerated by the presence of MS salts.

Rat serum albumin has been labeledw ith dilactitollZ5I- tyramine,( 12‘I-DLT) a radioactive tracer which remains entrappedw ithin lysosomes following cellular uptake and degradation of the carrier protein. Similar kinetics of clearance from the rat circulation were observed for albumin labeled conventionally with lZsI or 12‘I-DLT-albumin, both proteinhsa ving circulating half-lives of -2.2 days. In contrast, the recovery of whole body radioactivity had half-lives of -2.2 and 5.1 days, respectively, for the two protein preparations, indicating substantial retention of degradation products derived from catabolism of ”‘I-DLT-albumin. We report large logarithmic corrections to the conductivity of two-dimensional electrons and holes in GaSb-InAs-GaSb double heterostructures. From ∼ 40 mK to 1 K, the conductivity increased with the logarithm of the temperature but with a slope as much as 30 times larger than estimated from the theories of weak localization and carrier interaction. The discrepancy apparently results from electron-hole interactions not included in the theory.

Arnoldia Kuesii, A New Juvenile Fernlike Plant From The Lower Permian Of New Mexico, William D. Tidwell, Sidney Ash

A nearly complete juvenile fernlike plant is described here from Lower Permian rocks of New Mexico. The fossil consists of a horizontal rhizome with roots, a short thick upright aerial branch, and a tuft of dimorphic leaves. It is assigned to Arnodia kuesii gen. et sp. n. and appears to be the first juvenile fernlike plant known from the Upper Paleozoic. Abundant palynomorphs and other plant fossils associated with the fossil indicate that it is Early Permian in age.

Algebraic Geometry For Computer-Aided Geometric Design, Thomas W. Sederberg, Ronald N. Goldman

Classical algebraic geometry has been virtually ignored in computer-aided geometric design. However, because it deals strictly with algorithms, it is really more suited to this field than is modern algebraic geometry, which introduces abstractions far removed from the algorithmic nature of computer-aided design. This tutorial examines resultants, curve implicitization, curve inversion, and curve intersection. Discussion follows a series of examples simple enough for those with only a modest algebra background to follow.

Hume And His Critics: Reid And Kames, Noel B. Reynolds

This presentation was in response to Kenneth MacKinnon’s defense of Thomas Reid’s preference for natural virtue against David Hume’s conventionalism in his theory of law. It is argued that because Hume’s legal theory follows easily from his theory of human nature, Reid and Kames—and MacKinnon—need to refute Hume at that level to be successful in their rejection of his conventionalism.

This paper lays out the logic of a conservative view of liberty and morality based on an understanding of human nature as both social and rational on the one hand, and radically individual and self-seeking on the other. Without public virtue, a people cannot govern itself as a free people. But neither virtue nor moral truth can be legislated. The rule of law under constitutionalism is the most successful human arrangement for providing freedom and allowing moral action on the part of individuals.

Paul Marcus has produced an extremely thorough article on the intriguing and complex defense of entrapment. After analyzing the subjective and objective approaches to the defense, the author turns to the infrequently addressed question of evidence on predisposition. Included here are the recent ABSCAM cases.

Finally, the author explores the vagaries of inconsistent defenses and, on the whole, provides academics and practitioners with a refreshing and useful guide to some of the most important questions involving entrapment.
