Simulation Of The Polarization Curves For Oxygen Reduction At A Rotating Disk Electrode, P. K. Adanuvor, Ralph E. White

The electrochemical reduction of oxygen in 1M NaOH solution is simulated at a rotating disk electrode. Steady-state polarization curves are presented for possible reaction schemes for the reduction process. The effect of changes in the kinetic parameters on the polarization curves is demonstrated and special attention is focused on the production of hydrogen peroxide.

An extensive survey of the Docktor-Ingenieur Dissertationen of Jakob Jörissen and Klaus-R. Menschig, both originally from the Universität Dortmund, is presented in regard to the empirical modeling of membrane chlor-alkali cells and how it can be applied to a combined zero gap/attached porous electrode layer membrane cell. Particular emphasis isplaced on Menschig's work on zero gap (ZG) and attached porous electrode layer (APEL) membrane chlor-alkali cells, the first such research to appear in the open literature. Menschig developed various computer programs to characterize these ZG and APEL membrane chlor-alkali cells. He characterized these cells by using the following parameters: the …

A Review Of Mathematical Modeling Of The Zinc/Bromine Flow Cell And Battery, T. I. Evans, Ralph E. White

Mathematical models which have been developed to study various aspects of the zinc/bromine cell and stack of cells are reviewed. Development of these macroscopic models begins with a material balance, a transport equation which includes a migration term for charged species in an electric field, and an electrode kinetic expression. Various types of models are discussed: partial differential equation models that can be used to predict current and potential distributions, an algebraic model that includes shunt currents and associated energy losses and can be used to determine the optimum resistivity of an electrolyte, and ordinary differential equation models that can …

A Mathematical Model Of A Lead-Acid Cell: Discharge, Rest, And Charge, Hiram Gu, T. V. Nguyen, Ralph E. White

A mathematical model of a lead-acid cell is presented which includes the modeling of porous electrodes and various physical phenomena in detail. The model is used to study the dynamic behavior of the acid concentration, the porosity of the electrodes, and the state of charge of the cell during discharge, rest, and charge. The dependence of the performance of the cell on electrode thicknesses and operating temperature is also investigated.

"Your Honor Our Honor, It Was Lik , It Was Like This... E This...": Narr ": Narrative Discourse In Small Discourse In Small Claims Court, Mark W. Tanner

Small claims court is not a building or a courtroom, but a special procedure, established by each state, which simplifies the court process for a specified range of civil disputes involving relatively small amounts of money (Ruhnka 1878: 1). The intent of the small claims process is to provide the parties involved (litigants) with an opportunity for a low cost, speedy means of settling a dispute. Litigants (plaintiff and defendant) in small claims court may represent themselves in a semi-formal setting where the normal legal rules for the presentation of evidence have been simplified.

Religiousness And Mental Health Reconsidered: A Study Of An Intrinsically Religious Sample, Allen E. Bergin, Kevin S. Masters, P. Scott Richards

Despite the existence of strong viewpoints, the relation between religiousness and mental health is not yet clearly understood. The Religious Orientation Scale has provided researchers with a valuable tool for differentiating between intrinsic (/) and extrinsic (E) religious orientations, thereby clarifying some of the confusion in this area. In the present study we assessed correlations between these two scales and anxiety, personality traits, self-control, irrational beliefs, and depression. Results generally indicated that / is negatively correlated with anxiety and positively correlated with self-control and "better" personality functioning, whereas the opposite is true ofE. Notes On A Bicentennial Constitution: Part Ii, Antinomial Choices And The Role Of The Supreme Court, William W. Van Alstyne

Continuing the examination of judicial review conducted around the Constitution’s bicentennial, this article lays bare the inconsistencies in the expected tasks of the Supreme Court. Where some roles of the Court have traditionally been treated as indivisible, examining those same roles separate from one another produces an incoherent view of the Court that is difficult to compromise.

The Circleville Massacre: A Brutal Incident In Utah's Black Hawk War, Albert Winkler

The Ute Indians of Utah rebelled against the white settlers of Utah, and war broke out in 1865. The Ute Indians showed skill at war, and they staged an attack on Circleville that killed four people. The white settlers became suspicious of the nearby Piute Indians and arrested them. The Indians attempted to escape and were shot down. The white settlers feared that the nearby Indians would retaliate, so they killed the women and children. Three or four small children were spared to be raised by white families.

Regulation Of Government Agencies Through Limitation Riders, Neal Devins

Congress often attaches limitation riders to appropriations bills to establish its policy directives. Professor Devins argues that the appropriations process is not the proper vehicle for substantive policymaking. In this article, he analyzes institutional characteristics that prevent the full consideration or articulation of policy in appropriations bills. Professor Devins also considers the extent to which Congress's use of limitation riders inhibits the effectiveness of the other branches of the federal government. Professor Devins concludes that, while Congress's use of limitation riders is sometimes necessary, Congress should be aware of the significant risks associated with policymaking through the appropriations process.

The first two parts are adapted from a public address delivered at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, as part of its Bicentennial series, in 1987. The third part was added later, originally as an Addendum Note.
