Imagine the following scenario: buyer, a typical consumer wishing to obtain goods or services, visits seller. Anxious to close the deal, seller impresses buyer with oral representations and promises concerning the goods or services. Buyer, enticed into making the purchase, signs a preprinted form contract, failing either to notice or understand this deceptively harmless looking provision: "This writing is the final and entire agreement of the parties and there are no other representations, promises, warranties or agreements of any kind." A Mathematical Model For The Initial Corrosion Rate Of A Porous Layer On A Rotating Disk Electrode, William E. Ryan, Ralph E. White, S. L. Kelly

A mathematical model is presented for the initial corrosion rate of a porous layer on a rotating disk electrode. The model is used to predict the corrosion potential and corrosion current density for a porous electrode made of pure iron in aerated caustic solutions. The dependence of these predictions on some of the properties of the porous layer is presented. It is shown that the corrosion rate depends significantly on the specific surface area of the porous electrode.

Class Groups Of Quadratic Fields Ii, Duncan A. Buell

A computation has been made of the noncyclic class groups of imaginary quadratic fields Q(√-D) for even and odd discriminants - D from 0 to - 25000000. Among the results are that 95% of the class groups are cyclic, and that -11203620 and -18397407 are the first discriminants of imaginary quadratic fields for which the class group has rank three in the 5-Sylow subgroup. The latter was known to be of rank three; this computation demonstrates that it is the first odd discriminant of 5-rank three or more.

Since the passage of the Sherman Act in 1890, successful plaintiffs in private antitrust actions have been entitled to recover three times the actual damages awarded. Originally embodied in section 7 of the Sherman Act, the mandatory treble damages provision was later incorporated into section 4 of the Clayton Act and made applicable to all actions in which private plaintiffs sought recovery under the federal antitrust laws. In the century since the Sherman Act became law, the antitrust debate has concentrated largely on issues of substantive liability. Antitrust violations traditionally have been viewed as statutory torts, yet tort principles of damage allocation, including contribution and claim reduction, have not been extended by analogy in the federal courts to antitrust cases. Moreover, the principle of joint and several liability, made applicable to antitrust conspirators by judicial fiat some eighty years ago, has gone largely unchallenged. While the federal antitrust laws are nearly a century old, the damage allocation debate is of recent vintage, emerging in the wake of the Electrical Equipment Cases, when the private treble damage remedy came into its own.

President Reagan's appointment of Antonin Scalia to the United States Supreme Court raises concern among liberals that Justice Scalia will help lead the Court away from a number of liberal positions toward a new conservatism. The Reagan Administration's requirement that judicial appointments advance the Administration's preference for judicial restraint and strict constructionism enhances this concern. These new executive requirements mean that federal courts should accord greater authority to the democratically elected branches of the government. Justice Scalia's primary areas of study, administrative law and separation of powers, reflect his adherence to judicial self-restraint.

This study sought to find out if mentoring styles were used by cooperating teachers as perceived by student teachers during their clinical field experience. After a specific mentoring model was constructed; the objectives of the study were to identify leadership behaviors cooperating teachers used; to determine if any of the inferred mentoring styles that incorporated the leadership behaviors tested were dominant; and to determine if any of these leadership behaviors or mentoring styles influenced a student teacher's success as measured by a final evaluation checklist. Because attaining citizenship skills remains the principal goal of social studies; this unit was designed to highlight the founding of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights in a manner appropriate to both primary and intermediate elementary children. Each lesson includes objectives; materials; and procedures; as well as supplementary materials which may be duplicated for student use. Student awareness of the need for rules and laws is developed through the activities in lesson one. The Br₂/Br^– electrode reaction with tribromide complex formation reaction in the solution, a chemical-electrochemical (C-E) type reaction, has been investigated in order to determine the effect of the chemical reaction on the electrode kinetics. It is shown that the chemical reaction has little effect on the electrode kinetics at very slow homogeneous reaction rates, but has a more drastic effect on the electrode kinetics at faster homogeneous reaction rates. A general mathematical model for studying the kinetics of electrochemical reactions at a rotating disk electrode under steady-state potentiostatic conditions is presented. The model, apart from predicting the net and partial current densities at given values of the applied potential, the ohmic potential drop, and the concentration and potential profiles in the solution, also accounts for homogeneous reactions of any order in the solution and noncharge transfer reactions at the electrode surface. The versatility of the model is demonstrated by the application of the model to a variety of complex reaction schemes.

A Mathematical Model Of A Zinc/Bromine Flow Cell, T. I. Evans, Ralph E. White

A mathematical model is presented for a zinc/bromine flow cell. The model includes a thin porous layer on the bromine electrode and a porous separator. The independent parameters of the porous layer are defined, and their effect on cell performance during charge and discharge is investigated. The dependence of the round trip energy efficiency on the thickness of the porous layer and mode of discharge is presented. The predictions of the model show that a maximum round trip energy efficiency of 70% should be possible under the design conditions considered.
