The Missouri Law Review has a distinguished history of service to the legal profession and the academic community. Liquid Crystals From Poly(4,4'-Methoxybiphenylyl Methacrylate)., R. Duran, D. Guillon, Ph Gramain, A. Skoulios

Side-chain liquid crystalline poly(4,4'-biphenylyl methacrylate) was studied by x-ray diffraction. Three smectic phases were described using a ribbon-like structural model for the polymer chain. In the smectic S//P phase, ribbons lie flat on their sides to form layers with a spacing equal to the thickness of the ribbons. In the smectic S//A phase, the ribbons stand upright giving layers with a thickness corresponding to the length of one extended monomeric unit. In the ordered smectic S//O phase, the layer thickness also corresponds to one extended repeat unit, and the pendant groups are arranged according to a two-dimensional oblique lattice. The …

An 18-week experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of changing from incandescent to fluorescent lighting on egg production, egg weight, fertility, and hatchability of end of lay broiler breeders housed in an open-sided house. Forty-eight-week-old Cobb feather-sexed broiler breeders were housed, 30 females and 3 males per pen, in a total of 28 pens. Incandescent lights had been used previously, so pens were randomly assigned to either fluorescent or incandescent lights giving 20 lx of light at bird level. Lights used were 60 W incandescent and 22 W fluorescent cool-white circular. Body weight and egg production were measured weekly, …

Three experiments were conducted with broiler chicks to investigate the effect of dietary additions of NaHCO3(1%), A1(OH)3(.5%), kaolin(1%), A1(OH)2NaCO3(.23%), CaCO3(.37%), and MgO(1%) on gain, efficiency, duodenal pH, and liver Cu concentration of Eimeria acervulina-infected chicks. Experimental coccidial infection consistently reduced chick gain, efficiency, and duodenal pH, but it increased liver Cu concentration of chicks fed excess Cu. Sodium bicarbonate addition improved chick gain and efficiency slightly, whereas the MgO addition reduced these performance criteria. Sodium bicarbonate improved gain more in coccidiosis-infected chicks than in uninfected chicks, but it failed to alleviate, to any extent, the coccidiosis-induced liver Cu increase of …

Four experiments were conducted with broiler chicks to investigate the effect of dietary NH4Cl on gain, feed efficiency, duodenal pH, and liver Cu concentration of Eimeria acervulina-infected chicks. Experimental coccidial infection reduced chick gain, feed efficiency, and duodenal pH, but it increased liver Cu concentration in chicks fed excess Cu. Ammonium chloride had no effect on gain, feed efficiency, liver Cu concentration, or on duodenal pH.

Testes from 47 adult (4-20 years) stallions obtained in November-January (non-breeding season) and 41 adult stallions obtained in May-July (breeding season) were perfused with glutaraldehyde, placed in osmium and embedded in Epon 812. Percentage Leydig cell cytoplasm or nuclei in the testis was determined by point counting of 0.5 μm sections under bright-field microscopy. Testes from 6 randomly selected horses per season were processed for electron microscopy. The volume (ml) of SER/testis was calculated from the % SER in the cytoplasm % Leydig cell cytoplasm, and parenchymal volume. Section 12 of the Securities Act of 1933 creates two private rights of action, each providing in relevant part that ‘ a ny person who offers or sells a security . . . shall be liable to the person purchasing such security from him . . ..’ Because suit may be maintained only by the person who purchases the security from defendant, an offeror may incur section 12 liability only if the offeror also ‘sells' the security to the plaintiff. Part I of this Article defines social investing and briefly reviews the South Africa divestment movement which has brought questions about the legality of social investing to the fore. Part II comments upon existing statutory and common law limitations on the discretion of trustee-investors to adopt policies of social investing. Part III analyzes the empirical research on the extent to which preclusion of a set of investment opportunities may impair the performance of a typical trustee-investor's portfolio, both with respect to rate of return and risk. Core-exciton-induced desorption of O and H from MgO(100) and MgO(111) has been observed using photon excitation energies spanning the O K edge. Electron-yield data from partially oxidized Mg implies that these states are localized in the near-surface region. O and H desorption results from the decay of different O core-exciton states as well as the states produced by interband transitions. The O excitonic levels are interpreted in terms of their related atomic origin. © 1987 The American Physical Society.

Proton NMR has revealed two modes of structural heterogeneity in the monomeric hemoglobin I of Chironomus thummi thummi, CTT I; rotational disorder caused by a 180° rotation of the heme about the α, γ‐meso axis (primary heterogeneity), which varies for each preparation or reconstitution of this hemogobin, and a ‘silent’ amino acid replacement [Thr/Ala exchange in position 98(FG4)] in the vicinity of the heme group, which is invariant under all experimental conditions. Swarm cells of Thiothrix nivea were found to possess a group of fimbriae at one pole. The other pole either was bare or possessed from one to three fimbriae. By using this polarity as a marker, it was found that the initial step in attachment of swarm cells involves the fimbriated pole and that this initial step is followed by the production of holdfast material.

Untreated subjects with mild to moderate hypertension were compared with normotensive controls recruited from the same ambulatory screening clinic. All subjects were black. Resting levels of cytosolic free calcium were estimated in washed platelets with the fluorescent intracellular probe fura 2, and sodium and potassium were measured in red blood cells. Calcium levels were 21 % higher in the hypertensive subjects (p = 0.02), and a 9% increase in sodium was observed in an expanded sample (p = 0.04). Neither intracellular calcium nor intracellular sodium had a significant linear correlation with blood pressure when hypertensive subjects and controls were examined …

The major problem with which this paper is concerned is determining criteria that allow one to decide whether the subsemigroup generated by a subset B of a group G is all of G. Motivations for considering this problem arise from at least two sources. The first source concerns the program to develop a Lie theory of semigroups. Given a closed subsemigroup S of Lie group G, one defines the tangent object of S in the Lie algebra L(G) by L(S) = {xeL(G):exp(tx)∊S for all t≧0}. © 1987, Edinburgh Mathematical Society. A graph is weakly symmetric if its automorphism group is both vertex-transitive and edge-transitive. In 1971, Chao characterized all weakly symmetric graphs of prime order and showed that such graphs are also transitive on directed edges. In this paper we determine all weakly symmetric graphs of order twice a prime and show that these graphs too are directed-edge transitive. © 1987.

A Characterization Of The Ternary Matroids With No M(K4)-Minor, James G. Oxley

Brylawski identified the class of binary matroids with no minor isomorphic to M(K4) as being the class of series-parallel networks. From this he deduced that, for all such matroids M, the critical exponent c(M; 2) is at most 2. He also conjectured that a similar result is true over all finite fields GF(q). This paper examines the classes of ternary and GF(4)-representable matroids with no M(K4)-minor. The main result characterizes the former class by showing that, with one exception, the only non-trivial 3-connected members of this class are whirls or minors of the Steiner system S(5, 6, 12). We present various applications of recently developed techniques which are an interplay between the differential geometry and the theory of distributions. We apply them to the microlocal theory, derive the general order transport equations for the strength of wave fronts, obtain the values of the jumps of the general Nth-order derivatives of the harmonic functions across the potential layers, and present the explicit formulas for an arbitrary order derivative of functions of the radial distance r. © 1987.

We introduce the concept of the continuous Pythagoras number Pc(S) of a subset S of a commutative topological ring to be, roughly, the least number m ≤ ∞ such that the set of sums of squares of elements of S can be represented as sums of m squares of elements of S, by means of m continuous functions. Heilbronn had already shown that Pc(Q) = 4. Letting Ln(F) be the set of linear n-ary forms over the field F, we show that Pc(Ln(R)) = n. Four hundred seven ejaculates from 15 Holstein bulls collected from December 1984 to June 1985 were evaluated postthaw for viability characteristics (percent progressive motility at 0 h and after 3 h at 37°C incubation, percent intact acrosomal membrane after 3 h at 37°C incubation) and abnormal morphological characteristics [percent head (primary), midpiece, and tail (secondary) abnormalities]. Weighting coefficients for combining viability and abnormality characteristics were generated from between-bull and within-bull variance and covariance matrices. Two hundred ninety-eight additional ejaculates collected from July 1985 to February 1986 were added. Linear quality scores for 705 ejaculates (24 bulls) were the sum of …

Isostatic Compensation And Conduit Structures Of Western Pacific Seamounts: Results Of Three-Dimensional Gravity Modeling, James N. Kellogg, Bruce S. Wedgeworth, Jeffrey T. Freymueller

Detailed three-dimensional polygonal prism models of two large western Pacific seamounts show that the 135 mgal difference in the observed sea surface gravity over the two can be best explained by similar mean densities (2.6 gjcm3) and crustal thickening under one seamount (Airy isostatic compensation). Observed calculated residuals are further reduced by including dense (2.9 gjcm3) vertical feeder pipes or volcanic conduits in the models. Dense conduits or fracture zones 5 to 17 km in diameter are located under many, if not all, craters on volcanic islands and seamounts. A 3-D Gravity Tectonic Study Of Ita Mai Tai Guyot: An Uncompensated Seamount In The East Mariana Basin, Bruce S. Wedgeworth, James N. Kellogg

Ita Mai Tai is a large, locally uncompensated seamount on the eastern edge of the East Mariana Basin. A large positive gravity anomaly of 254 mgal characterizes the summit and a low of -69 mgal, the surrounding moat. Using polygonal prisms to approximate the bathymetry, the observed gravity was inverted to calculate an average density of 2.59 g/ems for the seamount. Observed-calculated gravity residuals are reduced by including the flanking sedimentary basins and a dense volcanic conduit. The drill sites from DSDP Legs 20 and 89 describe a volcanic edifice formed in the Aptian!Albian on Jmassic/Cretaceous crust. The volcanism is …

A Few Still Later Words On Translating Homer, Or C. S. Calverley And The Victorian Parodic, Patrick G. Scott

Argues (largely in the style of Matthew Arnold) that the Victorian verse parodist C.S. Calverley can best be understood through 19th century ideas of verse translation, and especially through the writing on parody of the Scottish lawyer Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee, in his Essay on the Principles of Translation (1792).
