Present Net Worth And Internal Rate Of Return: A Note On Equivalence In Use, K. A. Blatner, Steven H. Bullard

Present net worth and internal rate of return are frequently used for ranking investment alternatives. The relative merits and limitations of the two criteria are discussed at length in numerous journal articles and texts. For analysts wishing to present consistent project comparisons, the issue is not which criterion is superior, but when are they equivalent. In this article, conditions for equivalence in use are outlined under alternative assumptions. Although the conditions appear complex, they are not unduly restrictive.

Interpreting and preaching on these Markan texts in the Epiphany Season requires attention to a series of contexts, including the narrative setting provided for these separate units and the congregational setting within which they will be interpreted. The interpretive task would seem to be to get at the promise in these epiphany texts while taking seriously the particularity of the good news and the specific setting in which the lives of hearers are planted.

On ‘Black Monday,’ October 19, 1987, ‘perhaps the worst day in the history of U.S. equity markets,’ the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 508 points, representing a loss of approximately $1 trillion in the value of all outstanding United States stocks. Furniture manufacturing is one of the most important industries in Mississippi; the industry's phenomenal growth and current high levels of production and employment have recently been widely recognized and publicized. The Mississippi Economic Council (1988), for example, recently labeled the state "The New Furniture Capital of America;' and Northeast Mississippi was recently described as a "booming region'' that "wants to be the Furniture Capital of America'' (Evans 1987). Structure And Funding Of State-Level Forestry Cost-Share Programs, Steven H. Bullard, Thomas J. Straka

State cost-share programs have become a popular means of encouraging forest management activities on private nonindustrial lands. Programs have been started in 13 states most with extensive forest industries and high percentages of private nonindustrial land ownership. Cost-shares are a direct economic incentive and are used to encourage such specific practices as reforestation after harvest. Although the need for forestry cost-share programs has been questioned in the past, accomplishments have been high and programs have been effective in increasing reforestation on private lands.

Fuel Weight Predictions Equations For Understory Woody Plants In Eastern Texas, Hershel C. Reeves, J. David Lenhart

Equations were developed for predicting total above-ground fuel weight (ovendry in grams) of 19 understory woody plant species in eastern Texas forests, using logarithmic equations and stem basal diameter. Prediction of woody fuel weight can be used to enhance fire intensity estimates under varying fuel moisture and weather conditions. Timber harvesting and transport are crucial components of the cost of delivered wood to forest products processing facilities. In fact, harvesting and delivering wood often costs more than the entire costs of growing wood until harvest. As such, timber harvesting research and development are important. Additionally, research in this area is worthwhile because efficiency gains, cost improvements, and environmental benefits due to timber harvesting research can be realized in a very short time period, rather than the decades-long wait required for research investments in timber growing.

Louisiana's coastal wetlands represent about 41% of the nation's total and are extensively managed for fish, fur, and waterfowl. Marsh management plans (MMPs) are currently used to avoid potential user conflicts and are believed to be a best management practice for specific management goals. In this article, we define MMPs and examine their variety, history, impacts, and future.

This Comment analyzes the constitutional issues raised by the use of mandatory student fees to fund speech at public universities. Part I examines the interests of students and universities with respect to the use of such fees. Part II examines court decisions in this area. Part III looks to the nature of student fees and demonstrates that they are permissible exercises of university discretion. Parts IV and V discuss whether the Constitution requires a university, if it funds student organizations by mandatory fees, to fund all organizations equally, without regard to other students' objections to those organizations' viewpoints.

Protecting Waste Assimilation Streamflows By The Law Of Water Allocation, Nuisance, And Public Trust, And By Environmental Statutes, Peter N. Davis

Both federal and state water pollution control statutes require dramatic reductions in waste discharges, but not their total elimination. Those statutes require establishing water quality standards for receiving waters and presume that they will be adequate to assimilate the residual post treatment wastes. But nothing is those statutes assures that minimum flows for waste assimilation in fact will remain in existence. Neither the common law nor eastern and western diversion permit statutes expressly provide direct means for establishing such minimum protected flows for residual waste assimilation. The purpose of this survey is to note important caselaw developments in the state and lower federal courts concerning religious liberty. Purposely omitted are the widely reported United States Supreme Court opinions, as well as cases where the Court has granted review during the 1987-88 term. The focus here is to collect significant cases that may otherwise escape broad attention. Only the facts and rationale of each court's decision is recorded. No editorial comment on the merits of these cases is intended.

Today, virtually all mortgages contain acceleration clauses permitting the mortgagee to accelerate the mortgage indebtedness upon default by the mortgagor as defined in the mortgage loan documentation. Section 8.1 of the new Restatement (Third) of Property: Mortgages [hereinafter Mortgages Restatement]1 endorses the view that these mortgage acceleration provisions are generally enforceable after default in accordance with their terms. Following default and acceleration, the mortgagor may prevent foreclosure only by redeeming the property from the mortgage debt, i.e., “only by paying or tendering to the mortgagee the full accelerated mortgage obligation.” Section 8.1(d)(3), however, places certain constraints upon the mortgagee's right …

The result of a search for the neutrino oscillation mode »raquo;e in a fine-grained tracking detector is reported. The average neutrino energy is 40 MeV and the average detector distance from the neutrino source is 26.8 m. No evidence for neutrino oscillations through this mode is observed. Limits on m2 and sin2(2) are presented. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) mRNA, and mRNA for its receptor, have been localized to specific cell types within the human atherosclerotic plaque, using in situ hybridization. The predominant cell types found to express PDGF A and B chain mRNA are mesenchymal-appearing intimal cells and endothelial cells, respectively, with little or no expression detected in macrophages. The distribution of PDGF receptor mRNA containing cells was also examined and found to be localized predominantly in the plaque intima.

The authors discuss the use of CDxs (Cyclodextrins) to enhance selective detection via EEM (Excitation Emission Matrix) measurements. Particular emphasis will be placed on the enhanced measurement of luminophors complexed with CDxs in the presence of select alcohols and quenchers. In addition, the use of solvent extraction and data analysis to reduce the dimensionality of the acquired EEM will be discussed. The use CDxs and quenchers can produce a single- or dual-component system from a more complex mixture, which can then be used as model component spectra. Purification, Partial Characterization, And Seroreactivity Of A Genuswide 60-Kilodalton Legionella Protein Antigen, Chou-Pong Pau, B. B. Plikaytis, G. M. Carlone, I. M. Warner

A genuswide protein antigen extracted from Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (strain Philadelphia 1) cells was enriched by differential pelleting and ammonium sulfate precipitation and subsequently purified with a combination of high-performance size-exclusion and ion-exchange chromatography. The protein has an apparent molecular weight of 650,000 before and 63,000 after urea (5 M) treatment, as determined by size-exclusion chromatography. These proteins resolved to a single band of 60,000 after sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The urea-treated protein had an isoelectric point of 5.8. This purified 60-kilodalton protein reacted with a convalescent-phase serum sample from a patient with legionellosis and rabbit immune sera …
