The chemistry of Maillard or browning reactions of glycated proteins is being studied in model systems in vitro in order to characterize potential reaction pathways and products in biological systems. In previous work with the Amadori rearrangement product N alpha-formyl-N epsilon-fructoselysine (fFL), an analog of glycated lysine residues in proteins, we showed that fFL was oxidatively cleaved between C-2 and C-3 of the carbohydrate chain to yield N epsilon-carboxymethyllysine (CML) and D-erythronic acid. How Do Harpacticoid Grazing Rates Differ Over A Tidal Cycle? Field Verification Using Chlorophyll-Pigment Analyses, Alan W. Decho

Four species of meiobenthic copepods were examined for diatom feeding. Microscopic analysis of gut-pellet contents from field-collected individuals indicated frequent ingestion of diatoms by 3 harpacticoids (Scottolana canadensis, Microarthridion littorale, Cletocamptus deitersi) while occasional diatom ingestion occurred Paronychocamptus huntsmani. Frustules were usually empty and broken, indicating that contents were digested. Laboratory experiments using ¹⁴C-labeling showed assimilation of diatoms by the 3 species examined. Field grazing rate studies were conducted over different portions of a tidal cycle using fluorescent chlorophyll-pigment analysis of gut-contents. Highest diatom consumption (p<0.05) occurred just after the mudflat became exposed (i.e. Early Low Water level, ELW) for S. canadensis, while consumption at Late Low Water …

Experimental Study Of Nonlinear Conductance In Small Metallic Samples, Richard A. Webb, S. Washburn, C. P. Umbach

We have directly observed current-dependent, nonlinear contributions to the conductance fluctuations of phase-coherent metallic wires and loops. The fluctuations in the current-voltage curves are reproducible, asymmetric about I=0, and in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. In ac measurements, the nonlinear terms also generate large harmonic signals of the conductance fluctuations whose dependence on the drive current can be understood qualitatively. The spectra of harmonics from loops and wires have different dependences on the voltage across the sample.

Immunocytochemical localization and in situ hybridization techniques were used to investigate the presence of spermatid nuclear transition protein 1 (TP1) and its mRNA during the various stages of spermatogenesis in the rat. A specific antiserum to TP1 was raised in a rabbit and used to show that TP1 is immunologically crossreactive among many mammals including humans. During spermatogenesis the protein appears in spermatids as they progress from step 12 to step 13, a period in which nuclear condensation is underway. The protein is lost during step 15. The question of God’s wrath is an old thorny problem for Christian theology. Simply expressed, one wonders how can a loving God be angry when anger is associated with a loss of temper, and a loss of self-control, and love is expressed in forbearance, patience, and graciousness. Can love be angry?

Yet, the scriptures speak often about an angry God (Nehemiah 1:6; Mark 3:5; and John 2:13-17).

Some treated this problem as only a human metaphor. Others as a pedagogical tool. Cultural anthropologists saw in it a vestige of primitive fear of taboos.

Dissipative Quantum Tunneling: Quantum Langevin Equation Approach, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell

The quantum Langevin equation is used as the basis for a discussion of dissipative quantum tunneling. A general analysis, including strong coupling and non-markovian (memory) effects, is given for the case of tunneling through a parabolic barrier at zero temperature in the presence of linear passive dissipation. It is shown that dissipation always decreases the tunneling rate below the barrier and increases transmission above the barrier. As a particular application, the case of the resistively shunted Josephson junction is considered. Simple closed form expressions for the tunneling rate and for the noise power spectrum are obtained and compared with results …

Beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century and extending to the outbreak of the Second World War, Brazil was to receive a stream of Polish immigrants seeking fabled "new lands" in South America. While there is a considerable literature on this subject, the vast majority of the works available are, of course, in Polish and Portuguese with a considerable number in German and Spanish. Very few items are available in English, and most of these works assume a fairly extensive knowledge of Polish history in addition to Latin American history. Have Gubernatorial Elections Become More Distinctive Contests?, Mark E. Tompkins

Gubernatorial and presidential elections over the period 1947—1986 are examined, using a previously reported process for decomposing partisan electoral outcomes series into their longterm and short-term components. These measures are employed to examine the proposition that gubernatorial elections have become increasingly isolated from outside forces. It is found that presidential coattails appear to be declining in importance (but not only because a number of states have moved to off-year elections). Gubernatorial elections have converged around a national pattern of relatively close competition, unlike state-level presidential contests, which have shifted in favor of Republican candidates. The U.S. South has many forestry advantages, yet public and private efforts are increasingly needed to encourage reforestation and active forest management in the region. The review draft of "The South's Fourth Forest, Alternatives for the Future" (USDA Forest Service 1987a) highlights the urgent need for increased efforts to ensure future timber availability:

Most forestry schools control forestland. Traditionally, the school forest has served as a laboratory for field instruction and research. This article reports on a 1985-86 survey of the 1 candidate and 46 accredited forestry schools in the United States on the ownership, objectives, and management of school forests.

The survey's purpose was to determine the extent and distribution of forestland ownership by forestry schools. The survey addressed how the forestry schools gained control of the land; the objectives of forest management, and how important the school forest was to the teaching, research, and service functions of the university. Five surveys of pine plantations in East Texas over an 18-year period (1969-1987) indicated that fusiform rust (Cronartium quercuum [Berk.] Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme Birdsall and Snow) infection rates have increased to current levels of about 50% on slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) and are continuing to increase on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) to 10-15% levels. Southern Pine Beetle And Fire In Wilderness Areas: The Kisatchie Hills Wilderness, Kisatchie National Forest, David Kulhavy, William G. Ross

Southern pine beetle infestations affect wilderness areas in the southeastern United States. In the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness area in Louisiana, a southern pine 'beetle outbreak resulted in widespread destruction of longleaf pine. Nest trees of the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species, also were killed. Following the epidemic, a fire fueled by beetle-killed pines went through the wilderness. Forest structure, species composition, successional processes and general ecosystem function were substantially altered as a result of these two related disturbances. Most wilderness areas containing southern pines were managed for pine timber before being designated as wilderness. Bark beetle outbreaks are a predictable …
