Thermal Properties Of A Series Of Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Poly(Methacrylates)., R. Duran, D. Guillon, Ph Gramain, A. Skoulios

The thermal behavior of a series of side-chain liquid crystalline poly(methacrylates) has been investigated by thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and dilatometry. The DSC study has shown that long times are required to reach equilibrium even at temperatures above the glass transition. The thermotropic polymorphism has been determined as a function of the length of the flexible spacer. Glass transitions in the mesomorphic state have been discussed. Dilatometry has shown that, for the 'glassy' mesomorphic phases, the partial specific volume of the flexible spacer is close to that corresponding to the crystal and the isotropic liquid; and that, …

We have investigated the mechanisms whereby equimolar quantities of ribosomal proteins accumulate and assemble into ribosomes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Extra copies of the cry1 or RPL16 genes encoding ribosomal proteins rp59 or L16 were introduced into yeast by transformation. Excess cry1 or RPL16 mRNA accumulated in polyribosomes in these cells and was translated at wild-type rates into rp59 or L16 proteins. These excess proteins were degraded until their levels reached those of other ribosomal proteins. Identical results were obtained when the transcription of RPL16A was rapidly induced using GAL1-RPL16A promoter fusions, including a construct in which the entire …

Dehalogenation In Marine Sediments Containing Natural Sources Of Halophenols., G. M. King

Halophenols such as 2,4-dibromophenol (DBP) occur naturally in some marine sediments, as a consequence of various animal and algal activities. In an earlier study, DBP was observed in the burrow microenvironment of the hemichordate Saccoglossus kowalewskii. At the concentrations found in the burrow lining, aerobic respiration appeared to be inhibited significantly relative to anaerobic catabolism. This effect, as well as factors contributing to the degradation of DBP, has been documented further here. Results from the addition of radiolabeled DBP to oxic and anoxic sediment slurries and growth experiments with aerobic and anaerobic enrichments suggested that aerobes did not significantly metabolize …

Determination Of The Range In Binding-Site Densities Of Rat Skin Heparin Chains With High Binding Affinities For Antithrombin., A. A. Horner, M. Kusche, U. Lindahl, C. B. Peterson

Rat skin heparin proteoglycans vary markedly in the proportions of their constituent polysaccharide chains that have high binding affinity for antithrombin. As the proportion of such chains in a proteoglycan rises, their degree of affinity for antithrombin also increases [Horner (1987) Biochem. J. 244, 693-698]. The antithrombin-binding-site densities of such chains have now been determined, by measuring heparin-induced enhancement of the intrinsic fluorescence of antithrombin and by chemical analysis for the disaccharide sequence glucuronosyl-N-sulphoglucosaminyl (3,6-di-O-sulphate), which is unique to this site in heparin [Lindahl, Bäckström, Thunberg & Leder (1980) Proc. Divergence Of The Recent Trends In Coronary Mortality For The Four Major Race-Sex Groups In The United States, C. Sempos, R. Cooper, M. G. Kovar, M. Mcmillen

Since 1976 there has been a leveling off or slowdown in the rate of decline in coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality. The age-adjusted absolute annual rate of decline in CHD mortality rates during 1968-75 (Δ rate/100,000 population/year) was virtually identical for White males (-7.54), Black males (-7.85), and Black females (-7.20), and somewhat lower for White females (-4.25). During 1976-85, however, the secular trends diverged considerably. Age-adjusted rates continued to decline at the same annual rate for White males, while the decline was approximately half as steep for the other three race-sex groups. A ratio-limit comparison between ξt, the solution of an SDE driven by a semimartingale, and Ht, the solution of an associated ODE, is proved on the set where limt→∞ξt=∞. Sufficient conditions in terms of the driving processes and the coefficients are obtained for limt→∞ξt to be ∞. © 1988.

This paper is concerned with characterizations of those linear, closed, but not necessarily densely defined operators A on a Banach space E with nonempty resolvent set for which the abstract Cauchy problem u′(t) = Au(t), u(0) = x has unique, exponentially bounded solutions for every initial value x ∈ D(An). Investigating these operators we are led to the class of "integrated semigroups". Among others, this class contains the classes of strongly continuous semigroups and cosine families and the class of exponentially bounded distribution semigroups. We calculate the effect of level broadening on the steady part of the magnetic moment and specific heat by deriving an analytic expression for the free energy of a two-dimensional electron gas in a uniform magnetic field, with an arbitrary Landau-level broadening and at a finite temperature. Measurements of these effects may provide a new way for gaining more information about the magnetic-field and temperature dependences of the Landau-level width. This in turn may lead to information about the density of states. In the particular case of Gaussian broadening, the broadening correction to the steady magnetic moment is as large …

Semen was collected, processed, and frozen from five dairy bucks for 2 successive yr for use in quality classification and evaluation for inclusion in artificial insemination programs. Semen was evaluated for volume, initial, postthaw and 37°C incubated percent progressive motility, percent postthaw 3-h 37°C incubated intact acrosomes, autoagglurination, whey-induced agglutination, and percent primary, secondary, and tertiary abnormalities. Significant high correlations were found between: percent progressive motility and percent intact acrosomes, percent intact acrosomes and percent autoagglutination, and percent autoagglutination and percent whey agglutination. Whole cottonseed extruded at temperatures (°C) and rates (kg/h) of 131, 314; 135, 182; 146, 195; and 156, 286 was evaluated by protein solubility, in vitro ammonia concentration, and in situ disappearance techniques. These techniques were used to estimate potential of extruded whole cottonseed for protein escape from the rumen. In addition, raw whole cottonseed, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and whole cottonseed and soybean meal heated for 4 h at 127, 138, and 149°C were used for comparison. Fiduciary duty claims are becoming a hot litigation topic. Increasingly, plaintiffs in a variety of commercial situations are suing under some fiduciary duty theory. Formerly, fiduciary duties were only imposed upon persons occupying some special position such as trustee or guardian. Lately, however, the courts, in a limited number of circumstances have begun taking a second look at creating or expanding certain fiduciary duties. There are many legitimate arguments for limiting the extension of the fiduciary duty doctrine. This paper reviews the historical experience of a new public relations program housed in a speech communication department (rather than in a journalism department; which is traditional); discusses some of the internal and external struggles experienced in the implementation and administration of the program; and reports on the placement of its graduates. The program; at the University of Northern Iowa's (UNI) department of Communication and Theatre Arts; was implemented in 1978 after five years of planning. The program received support from the administration but faced problems because of its phenomenal growth. The paper describes this support and a number of …
