SYNOPSIS: Functional-anatomical work on complex structural systems is handicapped by several difficulties: (1) Lack of established guidelines on how to select the structures that are relevant for the intended study, (2) lack of methods to check the accuracy of the description of a system's morphology, and (3) the need to integrate a large mass of results obtained through a variety of approaches taken from different disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, physics, biochemistry, ecology and evolutionary biology. The UNISOR on-line nuclear orientation facility (UNISOR/NOF) consists of a3He-4He dilution refrigerator on line to the isotope separator. Nuclei are implanted directly into a target foil which is soldered to the bottom accessed cold finger of the refrigerator. A 1.5 T superconducting magnet polarizes the ferromagnetic target foils and determines the axis of symmetry. Up to eight gamma detectors can be positioned around the refrigerator, each 9 cm from the target. A unique feature of this system is that the k=4 term in the directional distribution function can be directly and unambigously deduced so that a single solution for the …

"Creating a Shared History: Serial Narratives in The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894" is a cultural press history and textual analysis of contemporary indigenous serial literature in a nineteenth-century Mormon young women's periodical. It tests press historian Catherine Covert's assertions that some of the functions of the press are (1) to be a conservator of values, and (2) to engender harmony and affiliation among community members. The investigator places the Journal within the historical/ cultural context from which it was written, and identifies specific messages in the serial narratives that encouraged the preservation of Mormon values and Mormon community affiliation. The KLM conditions are conditions that are necessary and sufficient for a phase-space function to be a Wigner distribution function (WDF). We apply them here to discuss three questions that have arisen recently: (1) For which WDFs P0 will the map P→P0*P be a quantum dynamical map - i.e. a map that takes WDFs to WDFs? (2) What are necessary and sufficient conditions for a phase-space gaussian to be a WDF? (3) Are there non-gaussian, non-negative WDFs? © 1988.

A few years ago it was mostly economists, notably those of a libertarian stripe who were advocating voluntary market exchanges of water in the West. Now these exchanges, or transfers as they are sometimes referred to, are being unabashedly recommended by water users, politicians, bureaucrats, and even environmental organizations, who have come to see their value for achieving a more efficient water allocation. Water markets are an idea whose time has finally arrived.

Modeling Wetland Loss In Coastal Louisiana: Geology, Geography, And Human Modifications, James H. Cowan Jr., R. Eugene Turner

Habitat change in coastal Louisiana from 1955/6 to 1978 was analyzed to determine the influence of geological and man-made changes on landscape patterns within 7.5 min quadrangle maps. Three quantitative analyses were used: principal components analysis, multiple regression analysis, and cluster analysis.

Regional differences in land loss rates reflect variations in geology and the deltaic growth/decay cycles, man-induced changes in hydrology (principally canal dredging and spoil banking), and land-use changes (principally urbanization and agricultural expansion). The coastal zone is not homogeneous with respect to these variables and the interaction between causal factors leading to wetland loss is therefore locally variable …

Control regions of the nopaline synthase (nos) gene have been widely used to express foreign genes in plants since the promoter is active in a wide variety of plant tissues. We report here the characteristics of the nos promoter activity in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants at various developmental stages. The promoter was highly active in the lower parts of a plant and gradually decreased in the upper parts. This vertical gradient was maintained throughout plant growth until the flowering stage when the overall promoter strength decreased significantly in the vegetative organs. The gamut of futuristic visions in library literature—from optimistic to pessimistic, from realistic to fanciful. Contradictory answers to recurring questions are found: Can we finally say goodbye to Gutenberg? Will the library card be replaced by the telephone credit card? Will book ownership give way entirely to information access. Will "books without pages" and "libraries without walls" necessarily lead to librarians without jobs? Is it possible to set timetables? After past crystal ball gazers are compared, contrasted, and critiqued, positive plans for progress are suggested.

Inulin-125I-Tyramine, An Improved Residualizing Label For Studies On Sites Of Catabolism Of Circulating Proteins, Janet L. Maxwell, John W. Baynes, Suzanne R. Thorpe

Residualizing labels for protein, such as dilactitol-125I-tyramine (125I-DLT) and cellobiitol-125I-tyramine, have been used to identify the tissue and cellular sites of catabolism of long-lived plasma proteins, such as albumin, immunoglobulins, and lipoproteins. The radioactive degradation products formed from labeled proteins are relatively large, hydrophilic, resistant to lysosomal hydrolases, and accumulate in lysosomes in the cells involved in degradation of the carrier protein. However, the gradual loss of the catabolites from cells (t1/2 approximately 2 days) has limited the usefulness of residualizing labels in studies on longer lived proteins. This article analyzes the reasons which account for Greece's continuing membership in the Atlantic Alliance, even though NATO has not lived up to expectations and has failed to protect the nation's security against threats from Turkey. Following a brief examination of Greek attitudes toward NATO and the nature of dissatisfaction, the article argues that strategic concerns are, at best, of secondary importance. Instead, Greece's continuing membership in the Alliance is a result of the nation's economic ties to the West and the dependency of its military on NATO and Washington for advanced training, arms, war materiel, and other professional considerations. …

Independent Oscillator Model Of A Heat Bath: Exact Diagonalization Of The Hamiltonian, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell

The problem of a quantum oscillator coupled to an independent-oscillator model of a heat bath is discussed. The transformation to normal coordinates is explicitly constructed using the method of Ullersma. With this transformation an alternative derivation of an exact formula for the oscillator free energy is constructed. The various contributions to the oscillator energy are calculated, with the aim of further understanding this formula. Finally, the limitations of linear coupling models, such as that used by Ullersma, are discussed in the form of some critical remarks. © 1988 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

We examine the subspace structure of the Lorentz function space Lp,q[0, oo). Our main result is that a subspace of Lp,q[0, oo), p ^ 2, q < oo,must either strongly embed in Lp[0,1] or contain a complemented copy of lq.

The Bureau of Reclamation recently announced that its prime mission since 1902-building dams to make the desert bloom in the American West-is pretty much complete. While never really admitting that its newer projects have been economically infeasible, Bureau management has at last recognized that the days of the big public water project are gone. The Bureau now plans to turn its attention and resources to other more pressing problems, such as helping other agencies with construction projects needed to cope with hazardous waste.

A Parallel-Processing Subsystem For Rapid 3-D Interpolation Of Ct Images, William A. Barrett, Stephen J. Allan, Scott R. Cannon

An inexpensive parallel-processing subsystem for the rapid interpolation of CT image planes is demonstrated with a variety of node topologies. The subsystem is based on a tree network of INMOS T414 Transputer processors and is hosted by an AT-based image workstation. The subsystem accepts a stack of eight arbitrarily-spaced 256 x 256 image planes from the host. Subsystem output to the host consists of a stack of 32 scaled and evenly-spaced image planes (256 x 256 x 32 with cubic voxels). Benchmark execution times ranged from 12.3 seconds for three nodes to 5.8 seconds for eight nodes.

Techniques have been developed for automated extraction and dynamic interactive display of three-dimensional (3D) left ventricular (LV) surface anatomy from Cine CT images using a PC-based image display architecture. Images of both endocardial and myocardial surface anatomy are generated from multiple views at multiple time instances to demonstrate various LV pathologies including apical akinesis, apical and posterior aneurysms, LV Failure, IHSS, and a left atrial myxoma. Surface generation requires interpolation between scans, surface tracking, and rendering. Generation of 60 views corresponding to a single time instance requires approximately 15 minutes. A moment inequality is proved for sums of independent random variables in the Lorentz spaces LPtq, thus extending an inequality of Rosenthal. The latter result is used in combination with a square function inequality to give a proof of a Banach space isomorphism theorem. Further moment inequalities are also proved.

An earlier exact result (Phys. Rev. Lett. 55 (1985), 2273) for the free energy of an oscillatordipole interacting with the radiation field is obtained using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. A key feature of the earlier calculation, a remarkable formula for the free energy of the oscillator, is obtained in the form of a corresponding formula for the oscillator energy. This confirms, by a longer, more conventional proof, the earlier result. An advantage of this present method is that separate contributions to the energy can be isolated and discussed. Explicit, closed-form expressions are given and the high-temperature limit is discussed. © 1988.

"Convergence of iterative methods for the solution of the steady quasi-one-dimensional nozzle problem with shocks is considered. The finite-difference algorithms obtained from implicit schemes are used to approximate both the Euler and Navier-Stokes Equations. These algorithms are investigated for stability and convergence characteristics. The numerical methods are broken down into their matrix-vector components and then analyzed by examining a subset of the eigensystem using a method based on the Arnoldi process. The eigenvalues obtained by this method are accurate to within 5 digits for the largest ones and to within 2 digits for the ones smaller in magnitude compared the …
