Photoconductive Characterization Of Znxcd1-Xte (0≤X≤0.25) Single Crystal Alloys, David D. Allred, Elías López-Cruz, Jesus González-Hernández, Worth P. Allred

Large grain polycrystalline and single crystals of ZnxCd1-xTe grown by a modified Bridgman method were studied using the photoluminescence and photoconductivity techniques. The temperature dependence of the band gap, as determined by photoluminescence, follows the Varshni equation for measuring temperature in the range of 15-290 K. One of the fitted parameters, the Debye temperature, monotonically decreases with the increase of the atomic zinc concentration. A close correlation between the photoluminescence and photoconductivity measurements is also found. Samples in which the photoluminescence spectra exhibit emission bands associated to cadmium vacancies and other structural defects, show a photoresponse curve which includes, in …

Durante los ultimos años se han realizado diversos estudios sobre el español del Caribe que ofrecen un análisis detallado de los factores, tanto lingüísticos como extralingüísticos, que condicionan el proceso de aspiración y de elisión de la /s/ en posición final de sílaba y de palabra. Entre los factores lingüísticos examinados cabe señalar: el contexto fonológico, la función sintáctica de la /s/, la posición de la palabra dentro del sintagma, el número de silabas de la paiabra, la categoría gramatical de la palabra y el acento de la vocal inicial de la palabra siguiente.

It is often a difficult task to develop a Canadian studies library collection. As with any area studies collection, where the focus is on a geographic region rather than a particular discipline, a broad range of subjects typically must be covered. To add to the difficulty, Canadian materials are published in both English and French. And if the library is located in the United States, the librarian or bibliographer is faced with the inconvenience of coping with two different national currencies. The evolution of the Spanish sibilant system has been an object of study since the late nineteenth century. Since that time, a myriad of books and articles have been published on the subject whose major focus has been to determine the exact nature of the sibilant changes and the chronology of each change. As is the case in most historical work, the question of why phonological systems evolve usually takes on only secondary importance. Infrared optically black baffle surfaces are an essential component of many advanced optical systems. All internal surfaces in advanced infrared optical sensors that require stray light management to achieve resolution are of primary concern in baffle design. Current industrial materials need improvements to meet advanced optical sensor systems requirements for optical, survivability, and endurability. Baffles are required to survive and operate in potentially severe environments. The main lines in the photoluminescence spectra of Zn1Cd1-xTe single crystals grown by a modified Bridgman method in the compositional range of 0≤X≤0.25 have been identified. All crystals show only near-band-edge emission. To assist in the identification, various samples with different compositions were annealed under a Cd atmosphere. In the pure crystals, the prominent (A°, X) bound exciton line, as well as the doublet at longer wavelengths, disappear after the annealing. In contrast, the treatments do not change significantly the PL spectra of the mixed crystals.

Laser Raman spectroscopy has been found to be useful for characterizing amorphous semiconductor multilayers, especially the interfaces of multilayers. Recently, we have extended this technique to the characterization of magnetron sputtered multilayers commonly used as reflectors in soft x-ray optics. Unlike the multilayers previously studied which contained only semiconductors and dielectrics, these are generally semiconductor/metal multilayers. We report here on the Raman characterization of the most common class of multilayers used in soft x-ray optics, those that contain a high density metal like tungsten interspersed with layers of carbon. Thin film deposition techniques currently being used to produce multilayer x-ray optics (MXOs) have difficulty producing smooth, uniform multilayers with d-spacings less than about twelve angstroms. We are investigating atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) as an alternative to these techniques. ALE is a chemical vapor deposition technique which deposits an atomic layer of material during each cycle of the deposition process. The thickness of a film deposited by ALE depends only on the number of cycles. Multilayers deposited by ALE should be smooth and uniform with precise d-spacings which makes ALE an excellent technique for producing multilayer x-ray optics. We have …

Diffuse Absorbing Beryllium Coatings Produced By Magnetron Sputtering, David D. Allred, C. M. Egert

Beryllium coatings with varying thicknesses and columnar grain sizes were deposited by low temperature magnetron sputtering and wet chemically etched to enhance diffuse absorption of light. After etching these coatings exhibited a matte black surface finish and low specular reflectance (below 2%) in the IR up to a critical wavelength dependent upon the original grain size of the coating. Extremely thick coatings (350 µm) with original grain sizes of 10 to 12 µm were produced which exhibited specular reflectances below 0.5% up to 50 µm wavelength and a Lambertian BRDF at 10.6 µm averaging 4.3x10-3 ster-1. Carrot cell cultures provide a model experimental system for the analysis of biochemical and molecular events associated with morphogenesis in plants (3, 4, 5, 14). Among the biochemical changes accompanying somatic embryogenesis in this tissue is an increased biosynthesis ofpolyamines (1, 2, 7, 10, 11, 13). A variety of inhibitors of polyamine biosynthetic enzymes have been used to analyze the role of polyamines in somatic embryogenesis. The current U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit covers Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Nearly 46 million people live within its boundaries. As a result, the 9th Circuit has the largest caseload and takes the most time of any federal circuit court to dispose of cases. Despite all of this, Professor Baker lays out his argument for why dividing the 9th Circuit is wrong-headed. He starts by giving a detailed history of U.S. circuit courts, including the recent experience of splitting the 5th Circuit. He then takes on …

This volume is a collection of seven papers delivered at a symposium assembled in April 1989 upon the occasion, almost two hundred years hence, of the passage of the Bill of Rights by the First Congress. The unifying theme is stated to be the historical context of both Religion Clauses in the First Amendment, but the authors are driven primarily by Establishment Clause concerns. The Thrust of the essays deal with the originalism advanced during the years of Reagan Administration, and nonpreferentialism comes in for particular criticism, both pejoratively characterized as that "growing clamor".

X-ray windows are used in sources and detectors to separate the neighborhood of the x-ray generation or detection from the use environment. While each use has its own requirements, there are some principles that should be used in designing an optimal x-ray window. Because x-rays are absorbed to some extent by all materials, minimizing absorption is one criterion in preparing windows. Also, for most uses there is a pressure difference across the window so that ensuring pinhole-free structure and sufficient mechanical strength to support the differential is another criterion for window design. In Part I, this Article examines and categorizes the state statutes that prohibit an insurance agent from returning a portion of his commission for the sale of the policy to the consumer. Part II discusses substantive due process' in the state courts. After briefly summarizing the rise and fall of federal substantive due process, this part explores the use of state constitutions as independent constitutional authority in the area of economic regulation. Recent (6–12 month) marsh sediment accretion and accumulation rates were measured with feldspar marker horizons in the vicinity of natural waterways and man-made canals with spoil banks in the rapidly subsiding environment of coastal Louisiana. Annual accretion rates in aSpartina alterniflora salt marsh in the Mississippi deltaic plain averaged 6 mm in marsh adjacent to canals compared to 10 mm in marsh adjacent to natural waterways. The rates, however, were not statistically significantly different. The average rate of sediment accretion in the same salt marsh region for a transect perpendicular to a canal (13 mm yr−1) was significantly greater …

Healthy And Unhealthy Forms Of Religiousness Manifested By Psychotherapy Clients: An Empirical Investigation, P. Scott Richards, Steven A. Smith, Lanay F. Davis

This study investigated whether 49 Mormon psychotherapy clients and 51 Mormon nonclients differed on a number of religious and psychological variables. The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance, controlling for social desirability, education level, and occupation status. Clients scored higher than nonclients on shame and lower on existential well-being. There were no significant differences between clients and nonclients on religious orientation, religious wellbeing, moral reasoning, and guilt. Females scored much higher on guilt, and female clients scored much higher on shame; there were no other gender differences. Subjects showed a preference for Stage 4 moral reasoning, and 92% were …

Epitope Mapping Of The Monoclonal Antibody Fac2 On The Apoprotein Of Cpa-1 In Photosystem Ii, Laurie K. Frankel, Terry M. Bricker

Using a combination of cyanogen bromide cleavage and endoproteinase digestion we have shown that the putative epitope for the monoclonal antibody FAC2 lies in the region 360Pro-391Ser on the apoprotein of CPa-1. This region lies entirely within the large extrinsic loop of this protein. We have shown previously that the epitope of FAC2 becomes exposed in oxygen-evolving membranes upon treatment with alkaline Tris which releases all four of the manganese associated with the oxygen-evolving site of photosystem II. The epitope is not exposed, however, after CaCl2 treatment and exposure to low concentrations of chloride, conditions which lead to the release …

The question considered is the effect on the canonical commutation rules of mass renormalization in quantum electrodynamics. This is investigated by considering the quantum Langevin equation for a charged quantum oscillator interacting with the radiation field via dipole interaction. Explicit expressions for the commutator are obtained for finite cutoff frequency as well as the large-cutoff limit. The surprising result obtained is that the exactly equal-time (canonical) commutator involves the bare mass, while the corresponding commutator for infinitesimally displaced times involves the renormalized mass. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
