Predicted Secondary Current Distributions For Linear Kinetics In A Modified Three-Dimensional Hull Cell, F. A. Jagush, Ralph E. White, William E. Ryan

Current density distribution is an important consideration
for those involved in designing electrochemical systems
and electroplating systems in particular. Although it
is important, the common practice in industry is to use
trial and error to determine designs that optimize current
density distributions in electroplating. The purpose of this
paper is to illustrate the use of the finite element method
(FEM) to predict three-dimensional current density distributions.

Mathematical Model Of A Lithium/Polypyrrole Cell, Taewhan Yeu, Ralph E. White

A mathematical model to simulate the charge/discharge behavior of a lithium/lithium perchlorate-propylene carbonate/polypyrrole(Li/LiClO4-PC/PPy) secondary battery cell is presented. The model can be used to gain a better understanding of the behavior of this cell and to provide guidance toward the design of new secondary batteries which utilize an electronically conductive polymer such as polypyrrole (PPy) as the cathode. The model includes the capability of handling charge and discharge behavior and is used to study the effect of various design parameters on the performance of the cell.

The current distributions in a stack of bipolar, membrane
chlor-alkali cells are important design considerations
(1). The degree of nonuniformity of the current distribution
is important to know because highly nonuniform
current distributions could cause, among other things, severe
damage to the membrane in a cell stack (2).

Electrochemical Production Of Hydrogen And Sulfur By Low-Temperature Decomposition Of Hydrogen Sulfide In An Aqueous Alkaline Solution, A. A. Anani, Z. Mao, Ralph E. White, S. Srinivasan, A. J. Appleby

Electrolysis of hydrogen sulfide to its constituents in a solution containing equimolar concentrations of NaOH and NaHS has been carried out at 80°C. In a double-compartment cell employing Nafion membrane as a separator, both crystalline elemental sulfur and high-purity hydrogen have been produced at high current efficiencies. Only minimal, if any, passivation of the anode by sulfur product was observed. According to solution composition, electrolysis could result in gas evolution at the anode, passivation of the anode by sulfur deposition, or oxidation of sulfide (S2–) or polysulfide (S) to sulfur oxyanions. The Effects Of Separator Design On The Discharge Performance Of A Starved Lead-Acid Cell, T. V. Nguyen, Ralph E. White, Hiram Gu

A mathematical model of a starved lead-acid cell has been developed to study the dynamic behavior of the cell during discharge. Concentrated binary electrolyte theory and a volume-averaging technique were used to model the transport of electrolyte. The model can be used to predict cell voltage and profile of: acid concentration, overpotential, porosity, reaction rate, and electrode capacity, as functions of time. The effects of separator thickness and its porosity were examined with respect to cold-cranking amperage and reserve capacity of the battery. The separator was found to be a significant factor governing performance.

This essay shares some thoughts about the need for interaction between foreign language instructors and English teachers, both in high schools and at the university level. As a foreign language teacher for the past nine years (the last four in a liberal arts college), I have encountered several problems and difficulties that could be overcome, I believe, if English, Writing, and Foreign Language departments addressed them together. Primo Levi's third book, written under the pseudonym of "Damiano Malabaila," was published for the first time in the fall of 1966 by Einaudi. Storie naturali is a collection of fifteen short stories which represent the beginning of a new Cours in the author's narrative. After the autobiographical Survival in Auschwitz of 1947 and his second book of 1963 The Reawakening–both dealing with the Holocaust and its aftermath–Storie Naturali ("Natural Stories," not yet published in English) represented such a break in the literary patter established by Levi up to that point, that the author decided to use a …

The requirement for polyamines in the proliferation of cells was first demonstrated in bacteria (3). While significant progress has been made in this field using animal cell cultures, only preliminary studies have been reported with plant tissues. Serafini-Fracassini et al. (9) showed a marked increase in polyamine synthesis early during the G 1 phase, concomitant with the synthesis of RNA, following the break of dormancy in Helianthus tuberosus tuber tissue. A second phase of polyamine accumulation began during the progression of S phase. Torrigiani et al. (10) and Phillips et al. (7) later showed that all major polyamines peaked during …

This paper explores the origins of drug prohibition in the United States from a structural perspective. The primary locus ,son how certain economic conditions in U.S. history influenced attitudes toward racial and ethnic minorities during the 1800s and early 1900s. and indirectly affected the passage or prohibitory drug laws. The economic structure continues to Influence the current illegal drug market. Moreover, some consequences of legal and illegal drug use identify the impact of the economic structure on drug prohibition.

The Social Security Administration's Appeals Council performs the fourth and final administrative evaluation of appealed disability claims. Very little information about the Appeals Council has been available to claimants and their representatives, even though claimants must request Appeals Council review before filing an appeal in federal court. In response to criticism and controversy surrounding this obscure branch of the Social Security Administration, the Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS) asked Professors Koch and Koplow to study the Appeals Council's effectiveness in disability claims and adjudication. The second volume of Uber Künst und AltertJmm, published in 1820, contained an article by Goethe, the first part of which he had already written two years earlier, entitled "Classiker und Romantiker in Italien, sich heftig bekämpfend" (classicists and romantics in Italy fighting intensely). This report was meant to be a description of the Italian literary scene.during the second decade of the nineteenth century.

Motivational differences for resort vacation travel among family life cycle stages have not been addressed in travel research. However, from a marketing standpoint, segmenting the resort market into family life cycle groups can be reasonably important. Linking an identified group of motivat􀁄ons with these stages is the purpose of this article. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and analysis of variance are used to evaluate the data. Twenty motivations are . reduced into five motivation factors that coincide with established travel motivations or needs.
