The Safety Of Maximal Exercise Testing, Larry W. Gibbons, Steven N. Blair, Harold W. Kohl Iii, Kenneth H. Cooper

Previous reports on the safety of exercise testing have been based on surveys from different testing facilities with a variety of testing protocols and patient types. From 1971 through 1987, 71,914 maximal exercise tests conducted in a population with a low prevalence of known coronary heart disease under uniform conditions at a single medical facility resulted in six major cardiac complications including one death. No complications have occurred in the past 10 years in 45,000 maximal tests. The overall cardiac complication rate in men and women is 0.8 complications per 10,000 tests with 95% confidence intervals of 0.3-1.9 complications per …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Real-Fluid Mutual Diffusion Coefficients With The Lennard-Jones Potential Model, Richard L. Rowley, J. M. Stoker

Mutual diffusion coefficients for selected alkanes in carbon tetrachloride were calculated using molecular dynamics and Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials. Use of effective spherical LJ parameters is desirable when possible for two reasons: (i) computer time is saved due to the simplicity of the model and (ii) the number of parameters in the model is kept to a minimum. Results of this study indicate that mutual diffusivity is particularly sensitive to the molecular size cross parameter, σ12, and that the commonly used Lorentz–Berthelot rules are inadequate for mixtures in which the component structures differ significantly. Inbred strain 2 guinea pigs were vaccinated with Mycobacterium bovis BCG or were left unvaccinated. They were maintained for 6 weeks on defined, isocaloric diets containing either 30% (control animals) or 10% (animals receiving low protein) ovalbumin as the sole protein source. Animals were challenged by the respiratory route with a low dose of virulent M. tuberculosis H37Rv and killed 4 weeks later. Protein-malnourished animals were not protected by previous vaccination with BCG. Lymphocytes isolated from various tissues were tested in vitro for proliferative responses to mitogen (concanavalin A) and antigen (purified protein derivative [PPD]), production of interleukin-2 (IL-2), and …

A Relaxation Algorithm For Segmentation Of The Endocardial Surface From Cine Ct, William A. Barrett, Bryan S. Morse

A relaxation algorithm has been developed for automated segmentation of the endocardial surface from contrast Cine CT images. The image is contoured at an initial density threshold and a one-dimensional edge operator is applied orthogonally to each point of the contour. Output from the operator is used to generate a histogram, the mode of which identifies a new threshold. The image is contoured again at the new threshold and the process is repeated. Iteration continues with successive threshold estimates converging to a stable value in the region of the endocardial surface. Computer-determined thresholds compare favorably with manual segmentation while reducing …

Probabilistic Segmentation Of Myocardial Tissue By Deterministic Relaxation, William A. Barrett, Shawn C. Becker, Jerome A. Broekhuijsen

A recently-developed probabilistic model for automatically segmenting regions of interest in abdominal CT scans has been adapted to the challenging task of segmenting myocardial tissue in Cine CT scans. A system has been implemented on relatively low-cost hardware which performs such segmentations. Special techniques have been developed to improve consistency and accuracy. Early results of testing this new modality are encouraging and promising. Based on observations from experimentation, new directions for future work have been identified.

Interactive Measurement Of Three-Dimensional Cardiac Morphology, William A. Barrett, Shawn C. Becker

Techniques have been developed for extracting three-dimensional (3D) measurements directly and interactively from 3D representations of Cine CT images. In order to obtain 3D measurements the anatomical surface is interrogated directly through the use of a 3D graphical "probe" (line). The probe is interactively positioned and stretched between any visible surface points to allow direct capture of 3D (linear) distance. Distance measurements are updated in real time as the probe dynamically "penetrates" any intervening anatomy while providing valuable depth cuing for visual feedback and probe placement. Curvilinear distance is obtained by stretching the probe over multiple surface points. The probe …

The Old Testament lessons for Pentecost 18, 19, and 20 are drawn from the works of two of the so-called minor prophets, Amos and Habakkuk. In our first passage, Amos 8:4-7(8), the dichotomy of faith and life—compartmentalized religion that sees no reason to let the understandings and experiences of worship affect the activities of the rest of life—comes to the fore. Challenging Discriminatory Guesswork: Does Impact Analysis Apply, Michael A. Middleton

This article initially examines the traditional theories of proof in Title VII cases. It then discusses approaches by lower courts in resolving the competing concerns raised in applying those traditional theories in challenges to subjective selection devices. This article next discusses the Supreme Court's resolution of the problem in Watson and suggests a workable alternative resolution that will not undermine the broad prophylactic purposes of Title VII.

Job Displacement, Relative Wage Changes, And Duration Of Unemployment, John T. Addison, Pedro Portugal

Using special CPS data on displaced workers, this article investigates the wage consequences of job displacement in a framework that emphasizes the effects of past job duration(s) and unemployment duration(s) on postdisplacement wages. Our model also attempts to take account of the simultaneity between unemployment duration and the postdisplacement wage. It is found that duration strongly reduces subsequent earnings and that considerable overstatement of the loss in firm-specific training investments is implied by conventional routes to measuring wage losses.

Over a quarter of a century ago, I analyzed the allocation procedures utilized by the federal agencies which administer livestock grazing on the public lands (Gardner 1962). Two factors contributing to grazing misallocation and reduced range productivity were identified: (1) the "eligibility" requirements that qualify permittees for grazing privileges prevented the utilization of forage by ranchers who would value it most, and (2) use-tenure insecurity resulting from cuts in permitted grazing impeded private investment in range improvements on the public ranges. A highly accurate and predictive dynamic model of an electrohydraulic actuation system has been developed and verified. The accuracy of the model can be attributed to the inclusion of nonlinear representations of many system elements including hysteresis and saturation effects, orifice areas, piston damping, and flow forces. This level of accuracy makes the model a potentially valuable tool in the analysis and design of electrohydraulic actuation systems.

This message may have been attractive to the Galatians because they considered Paul’s gospel of freedom inadequate. The law would give them clear marks of identity, such as circumcision and distinctive rituals. Moreover, it would offer clear directives on how to deal with the Galatians as a form of neurotic legalism. The new preachers were apparently saying something like this: “the flesh with its passions and desires” (5:24), and what to do when someone “is overtaken in any trespass” (6:1).
