A Note On Repeated-Root Cyclic Codes, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza
Faculty Publications
In papers by Castagnoli et al. and Van Lint, cyclic codes with repeated roots are analyzed. Both papers fail to acknowledge a previous work by Chen, dating back to 1969, which includes an analysis of even, length binary cyclic codes. Results from Chen’s study are presented.
The Effect Of A Tilted Magnetic Field On The Equilibrium Of A Pure Electron Plasma, Grant W. Hart
The Effect Of A Tilted Magnetic Field On The Equilibrium Of A Pure Electron Plasma, Grant W. Hart
Faculty Publications
If the magnetic field in a pure electron plasma containment device is not aligned with the axis of the conducting walls, the electrons in the device will accumulate at the ends of the plasma where the magnetic field lines come closest to the walls and the electrons bound to the field lines can be closest to their image charges. If the plasma is also offset radially from the center (as with an l=1 diocotron mode), then more density will accumulate at one end than the other. As the plasma revolves around the center, the electrons will slosh from one end …

Insects as interpretive tools are an invaluable resource for the interpreter. There are many uses, from live insect displays to pinned specimens to the use of insects puppets in classrooms, conferences or other interpretive arenas. In this paper, the use of mealworms, the monarch butterfly as a candidate for our national insect, and the demonstration of insect locomotion are presented. The key to successful interpretation using insects is to encourage audience participation, exude enthusiasm, and promote the use of insects as an easy resource to acquire.
The New Criminal Discovery Code In Oklahoma: A Two Way Street In The Wrong Direction, Rodney J. Uphoff
The New Criminal Discovery Code In Oklahoma: A Two Way Street In The Wrong Direction, Rodney J. Uphoff
Faculty Publications
This article first examines criminal discovery in Oklahoma prior to the Allen decision. Next, section II of the article explores Allen and the court’s justifications for creating a reciprocal discovery system. The article reviews the Allen procedures and similar pre-trial discovery provisions contained in the American Bar Association’s Standards for Criminal Justice and questions whether Allen’s new discovery system will achieve the desired results. Section II also focuses on the constitutionality of the defendant’s disclosure obligations and the adverse effects of mandating such disclosures on the adversary system. Finally, section III of the article proposes an alternative discovery code based …

Effects Of Tidal Stage And Sun Angles On Intertidal Benthic Microalgal Productivity, James L. Pinckney, R. G. Zingmark
Effects Of Tidal Stage And Sun Angles On Intertidal Benthic Microalgal Productivity, James L. Pinckney, R. G. Zingmark
Faculty Publications
Motile benthic diatoms exhibit rhythmic vertical migrations that are influenced by tidal and light cycles. As a consequence of these periodic migrations, corresponding periodicities in benthic microalgal production should occur. Using oxygen microelectrodes, hourly measurements of microalgal production were obtained from subaerially exposed cores collected from low-intertidal muddy sediments in North Inlet estuary, South Carolina, USA Microalgal productivity at low tide was twice that at high tide (mean difference 52 %) and was significantly correlated with diurnal and tidal periodicities (r2 = 0.41; p < 0.0001). Production values ranged from 28.0 to 460.5 µmol O2 mg chl a-1 h-1 and maximum rates were achieved during mid-afternoon low …
A Self-Organizing Binary Decision Tree For Incrementally Defined Rule-Based Systems, Douglas M. Campbell, Tony R. Martinez
A Self-Organizing Binary Decision Tree For Incrementally Defined Rule-Based Systems, Douglas M. Campbell, Tony R. Martinez
Faculty Publications
This paper presents an adaptive self-organizing concurrent system (ASOCS) model for massively parallel processing of incrementally defined rule systems in such areas as adaptive logic, robotics, logical inference, and dynamic control. An ASOCS is an adaptive network composed of many simple computing elements operating asynchronously and in parallel. This paper focuses on adaptive algorithm 3 (AA3) and details its architecture and learning algorithm. It has advantages over previous ASOCS models in simplicity, implementability, and cost. An ASOCS can operate in either a data processing mode or a learning mode. During the data processing mode, an ASOCS acts as a parallel …
Case-Based Reasoning And Risk Assessment In Audit Judgment, Eric L. Denna, James V. Hansen, Rayman D. Meservy, Larry E. Wood
Case-Based Reasoning And Risk Assessment In Audit Judgment, Eric L. Denna, James V. Hansen, Rayman D. Meservy, Larry E. Wood
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of an effort to utilize Case Based Reasoning (CBR) to model a specific audit judgment task. To date most efforts to develop computational models of audit judgment have used strictly rule-based representation methods. Some researchers have recently adopted more robust structures to model the auditor domain knowledge. Although these recent efforts to extend the representation methods appear to be more accurate descriptions of auditor reasoning and memory, they still lack a comprehensive. theory to guide the development of the model. A commonly encountered phenomenon in audit judgment is for an …
Theoretical Aspects Of Intense Field Harmonic Generation, Anne L. Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander
Theoretical Aspects Of Intense Field Harmonic Generation, Anne L. Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander
Faculty Publications
We present theoretical studies of high-order harmonic generation in a rare-gas medium. The experimental results obtained at Saclay with a 1064 nm Nd-YAG laser in the 1013 W cm-2 intensity range are summarized. The harmonic emission strengths first decrease rather steeply for the first orders, then form a long plateau up to the 21st harmonic in xenon, or up to the 33rd harmonic in argon, before decreasing again rather abruptly. The theoretical description of these experiments consists first in the calculation of the photoemission spectra emitted by a single atom. The spectra are obtained by numerically integrating a time-dependent Schrôdinger …

A Molecular Blueprint For The Pore-Forming Structure Of Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels, Anne Grove, John M. Tomich, Mauricio Montal
A Molecular Blueprint For The Pore-Forming Structure Of Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels, Anne Grove, John M. Tomich, Mauricio Montal
Faculty Publications
A protein that imitates the sequence of a highly conserved segment predicted to line the pore of dihydropyridine-sensitive L-type calcium channels was designed and synthesized. Single-channel conductance properties were studied in planar lipid bilayers. The synthetic protein emulates the ionic conductance, ionic selectivity, and pharmacological properties of the authentic calcium channel, including the stereospecific action of agonist and antagonist enantiomers of the dihydropyridine BayK 8644. The identified sequence is identical in L-type calcium channels from skeletal muscle and isoforms of cardiac muscle, brain, and aorta. It is plausible that this structural motif represents the molecular blueprint for the pore-forming structure …

Non-Classical Derivation Of The Transport Theorems For Wave Fronts, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Non-Classical Derivation Of The Transport Theorems For Wave Fronts, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Faculty Publications
We establish a relationship between the derivatives of generalized functions and the transport theorems for moving surfaces of discontinuity. We study the motion of a propagating and deforming wave front which itself can have a moving discontinuity on its surface. With the help of the theory of generalized derivatives we present a general transport theorem which embodies the known results as special cases. © 1991.

Amplification Dynamics Of Human-Specific (Hs) Alu Family Members, Mark A. Batzer, Vandana A. Gudi, J. Carlos Mena, David W. Foltz, Rene J. Herrera, Prescott L. Deininger
Faculty Publications
We have investigated the distribution of several recently Inserted Alu family members within representatives of diverse human groups. Human population studies using 65 unrelated human DNA samples, as well as a familial study to test inheritance, showed that Individual Alu family members could be divided into three groups. The first group consisted of relatively older Alu family members which were monomorphic (homozygous) throughout the population tested (HS C3N1 and C4N6). The second group (HS C4N2, C4N5 and C4N8), apparently Inserted into other repetitive regions of the genome, resulting in inconclusive results in the PCR test used. However, it is clear …
Dynamics Of Bacterioplankton Abundance And Production In Seagrass Communities Of A Hypersaline Lagoon, Gerardo Chin-Leo, Ronald Benner
Dynamics Of Bacterioplankton Abundance And Production In Seagrass Communities Of A Hypersaline Lagoon, Gerardo Chin-Leo, Ronald Benner
Faculty Publications
The significance of bacterioplankton in the flow of carbon and energy and in trophic dynamics of the upper Laguna Madre, Texas (USA), was estimated by measuring bacterioplankton abundance and production over an 18 mo period and over several diel cycles. Bacterioplankton production was estimated from incorporation rates of thymidine (DNA synthesis) and leucine (protein synthesis). These independent inhces of bacterial growth were generally in agreement and yielded nearly identical annual estimates of bacterial production (25.24 g C m-2 yr-1 based on thymidine and 25.12 g C m-2 yr-1based on leucine). Assuming a 30 % growth …

Including Retirement Benefits In A Debtor's Bankruptcy Estate: A Proposal For Harmonizing Erisa And The Bankruptcy Code, Michelle A. Cecil
Faculty Publications
This Article first examines the conflicting policies of ERISA and the Bankruptcy Code. It then explores how the various courts have attempted to reconcile these policies when faced with the issue of whether a debtor's interest in retirement plan assets should be available for distribution to creditors in bankruptcy. In analyzing the relevant case law, the Article examines cases addressing the exclusion issue (whether pension plans should be excluded from the bankruptcy estate entirely). It also evaluates cases addressing the exemption issue (whether plan assets, once included in the bankruptcy estate, can be exempted out of the estate by the …

Propagation Of Chaos And The Mckean-Vlasov Equation In Duals Of Nuclear Spaces, T. S. Chiang, G. Kallianpur, P. Sundar
Faculty Publications
An interacting system of n stochastic differential equations taking values in the dual of a countable Hilbertian nuclear space is considered. The limit (in probability) of the sequence of empirical measures determined by the above systems as n tends to ∞ is identified with the law of the unique solution of the McKean-Vlasov equation. An application of our result to interacting neurons is briefly discussed. The propagation of chaos result obtained in this paper is shown to contain and improve the well-known finite-dimensional results. © 1991 Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Formation Of Pentosidine During Nonenzymatic Browning Of Proteins By Glucose, Daniel G. Dyer, James A. Blackledge, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes
Faculty Publications
A fluorescent compound has been detected in proteins browned during Maillard reactions with glucose in vitro and shown to be identical to pentosidine, a pentose- derived fluorescent cross-link formed between arginine and lysine residues in collagen (Sell, D. R., and Monnier, V. M. (1989) J. Biol. Chem. 264, 21597- 2 1602). Pentosidine was the major fluorophore formed during nonenzymatic browning of ribonuclease and lysozyme by glucose, but accounted for <1% of nondisulfide cross-links in protein dimers formed during the reaction. Pentosidine was formed in greatest yields in reactions of pentoses with lysine and arginine in model systems but was also formed from glucose, fructose, ascorbate, Amadori compounds, 3-deoxyglucosone, and other sugars. Pentosidine was not formed from peroxidized polyunsaturated fatty acids or malondialdehyde. Its formation from carbohydrates was inhibited under nitrogen or anaerobic conditions and by aminoguanidine, an inhibitor of advanced glycation and browning reactions. Pentosidine was detected in human lens proteins, where its concentration increased gradually with age, but it did not exceed trace concentrations (55 Fmol/mol lysine), even in the 80-year-old lens. Although its precise carbohydrate source in vivo is uncertain and it is present in only trace concentrations in tissue proteins, pentosidine appears to be a useful biomarker for assessing cumulative damage to proteins by nonenzymatic browning reactions with carbohydrates.
