The Ute Indians of Utah rebelled in 1865 which led to war for the next three years. Throughout the conflict, small numbers of Utah warriors showed great skill in raiding white settlements of central Utah and in keeping their enemies at bay.

Tungsten/carbon (W/C) multilayer thin films were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering. All samples consisted of 30 layer pairs with a nominal d-spacing varying from 2.5 to 14 nm, the W layer thickness was kept at 2 nm in all samples. The W/C multilayers were subjected to isochronal anneals in a quartz tube furnace at the temperature range from 500 to 950 °C under a flow of high purity Ar gas. X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and Auger depth profile were used to characterize the structure of the as-prepared and annealed multilayer films. Both the W and C layers appear to be …

Error Patterns In Research Papers By Pacific Kim Students, Chris Crowe

By looking for patterns of errors in the research papers of Asian students, educators can uncover pedagogical strategies to help students avoid repeating such errors. While a good deal of research has identified a number of sentence-level problems which are typical of Asian students writing in English, little attempt has been made to consider the specific problems which a long research paper presents. Of these problems, Asian students have the most difficulty integrating sources from research and developing transition, unity, and cohesion. These problems stem not necessarily from different thought patterns or primary language interference, but from the challenge of …

Creating Informal Play Opportunities: Are Parents' And Preschoolers' Initiations Related To Children's Competence With Peers?, Gary W. Ladd, Craig H. Hart

Preschoolers' social competence may depend on the frequency with which informal play activities are initiated by parents', children, and playmates. In this study, measures ofchildren's peer relations in informal and school contexts and the frequency of parents', children's, and peers' play initiations were obtained with 83 preschool children and their families on 2 occasions. Frequent parent initiations were associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior, lower levels of nonsocial behavior and, among boys, greater peer acceptance in preschool. Children who were more initiating of informal peer contacts displayed less anxious behavior in school and were better liked by their classmates. …

A large proportion of the culinary ceramics found on 11th century Anasazi sites in the Moapa Valley of Nevada were manufactured more that fifty miles to the east, in northwestern Arizona. This paper uses analyses of ceramics from sites in southeastern Nevada, northwestern Arizona, and southwestern Utah to more precisely define the regional distribution of these ceramics and to assess their degree of standardization in form and technology. Questions relating to the development of community specialization and interaction in egalitarian societies are--examined in light of these analyses.

A hypocoristicon is generally a single-element name resulting from the shortening of an originally longer one. Hebrew names and Semitic names in general, were often composed of two elements (or, as was often the case in Akkadian names and sometimes the case with West Semitic ones, three elements) which formed a nominal or verbal sentence.

Summary: Ten normal female subjects produced syllables at 5 dB increments from soft to loud. The differentiated electroglottogram (dEGG) open and speed quotients were compared to similar quotients from the inverse-filtered airflow waveform. The latter were measured according to objective and subjective criteria. The data indicate that the open quotient from the airflow waveform decreased as the intensity increased. The dEGG open quotient did not demonstrate this trend. The speed quotient from airflow increased initially with vocal intensity and decreased again as the intensity ceiling was approached. The chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) model describes the devolatilization behavior of rapidly heated coal based on the chemical structure of the parent coal. Percolation lattice statistics are employed to describe the generation of tar precursors of finite size based on the number of cleaved labile bonds in the infinite lattice. The chemical percolation devolatilization model described here includes treatment of vapor-liquid equilibrium and a cross-linking mechanism. The cross-linking mechanism permits reattachment of metaplast to the infinite char matrix. A generalized vapor pressure correlation for high molecular weight hydrocarbons, such as coal tar, is proposed based on data from coal liquids. …

Coal devolatilization experiments are generally conducted separately from char oxidation experiments, and the relationship between the chars generated in the two types of research is often ignored. However, char is one of the most important products of coal devolatilization and must be characterized as a function of temperature and heating rate in a manner similar to that for gaseous devolatilization products. The chemical structure of the parent coal directly affects devolatilization behavior. The construction of expert systems typically require the availability of expertise that can be modeled. However, there are many important problems where no expertise exists, yet there is a wealth of data indicating results in different situations. Machine learning algorithms attempt to discover rules which capture the regularities that exists in such data.

We have produced arrays of 10,000 sharp p-type silicon points using an etch plus oxidation method. The points were used as electron emitters. No high vacuum cesiation or high temperature cleaning was needed to observe the electron emission. These are seen to be photosensitive sources of electrons at 200 K and 300 K. They were also used to produce AlKα x-rays. This constitutes the first use of etched, point arrays for generating electrons for x-ray sources.

The discovery and understanding of the photoelectric effect led to the study of photoemissive materials fall into two major categories: classical photoemitters and negative-electron-affinity (NEA) materials. Classical photoemitters usually involve an alkali metal, a group-V element such as phosphorus, silver, and/or oxygen. An example is the Ag-O-Cs (S1) photoemitter. NEA photocathodes consist of a photoconductive single crystal semiconductor covered with a thin layer of cesium and oxygen. This layer lowers the work function of the photocathode. A dipole layer is formed at the surface, and band bending occurs. This lowers the effective work function. An example is the GaAs(CsO) photocathode …

Professor Baker weighs in on a new trend of allowing expert opinion on the status of the law. Professor Baker gives his prescription for the Long-Range Planning Committee of the Judicial Conference. First, he considers the "mission" of the federal courts, explaining that there should be no single, objectively correct conception of the role of the federal courts. Second, he discusses his conception of long-range planning, in terms of a relatively short event horizon and the absolutely wide-open scope of the range of proposals that are relevant to the work of the Committee. Measurements have been made of the low-temperature magnetic response of single, isolated, micron-size Au loops. The magnetic response is found to contain a component which oscillates with the applied magnetic flux with a fundamental period of Φ0=h/e. The amplitude of the oscillatory component corresponds to a persistent current of ≃(0.3–2.0)evF/L, 1 to 2 orders of magnitude larger than predicted by current theories.

We designed, constructed, and tested at 4.2 K (using two different low phase noise electrical pump generators) a cryogenic double-resonant parabridge motion transducer made out of niobium, whose electrical output was amplified by a two-stage metal-semiconductor field-effect transistor cryogenic amplifier. Most of the experimental results agreed well with the theoretical models. We were able to adjust the two electrical bridge resonant frequencies at the pump frequency, allowing us to obtain an electromechanical coupling as high as 0.054, and we successfully measured the mechanical Brownian motion of this transducer. A method for integrating separately developed information resources that overcomes incompatibilities in syntax and semantics and permits the resources to be accessed and modified coherently is described. The method provides logical connectivity among the information resources via a semantic service layer that automates the maintenance of data integrity and provides an approximation of global data integration across systems. This layer is a fundamental part of the Carnot architecture, which provides tools for interoperability across global enterprises.

Time courses for ingestion, retention and release via feces of microbial food was investigated using 2 bivalves with different feeding strategies, Potamocorbula amurensis, and Macoma balthica. The results showed 2 pathways for the uptake of food material in these clams. The first is represented by an initial label pulse in the feces. The second pathway operates over longer time periods. Inert 51Cr-labeled beads were used to determine time frames for these pathways. The first pathway, involving extracellular digestion and intestinal uptake, is relatively inefficient in the digestion of bacterial cells by P. amurensis but more efficient in …

We present measurements of the transport properties of 0.75-μm-long, narrow, insulating indium oxide wires and rings. These devices have no apparent tunnel barriers, yet they exhibit effects similar to those found in series arrays of very small-capacitance tunnel junctions: highly nonlinear I-V characteristics and a zero-bias conductance which is periodic in a voltage applied by means of a lateral gate. These effects are due to the influence of single-electron charging on transport through localized states in the insulating regime.

A generalization of the classical spectral theorem for normal complex matrices is proved for matrices with entries from a class of discrete valuation rings which we have called hermitian. The hermitian discrete valuation rings include the convergent complex power series in one variable and the complex formal power series in one variable. Thus one obtains an algebraic proof of Rellich's theorem on diagnolizability of hermitian analytic matrices which is simultaneously valid for both the rings of convergent and formal power series. © 1991.

Responds to a recent article by Peter Shillingsburg (in Studies in Bibliography , 1991)on the taxonomy of authorial revision or textual versions, arguing that for critical, biographical and historical study the editor (and interpreter) is constrained in the choice of variant by the purpose for which the text is being used. Examples are drawn from Victorian authors, including Alfred Tennyson, specifically the versions of Maud, and John Henry Newman, specifically successive versions of what became The Idea of the University.
