Tide Gauge Records, Water Level Rise, And Subsidence In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner

Long-term water level changes in the northern Gulf of Mexico were examined using tide gauge records for this century. Strong coherence exists between the annual mean water changes at Galveston, Texas, and (1) the relatively geologically-stable west coast of Florida, (2) global mean sea level, and 93) the subsiding Louisiana coast. Water levels at the Galveston gauge, one of the longest records (81 yr), have risen steadily, but not accelerated over the long-term. The apparent acceleration of water rise in the recent two decades is within the historical pattern, and is probably driven by regional or global, but not local …

Glycation, oxidation, and nonenzymatic browning of protein have all been implicated in the development of diabetic complications. The initial product of glycation of protein, fructoselysine (FL), undergoes further reactions, yielding a complex mixture of browning products, including the fluorescent lysine-arginine cross-link, pentosidine. Alternatively, FL may be cleaved oxidatively to form N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), while glycated hydroxylysine, an amino-acid unique to collagen, may yield N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)hydroxylysine (CMhL). We have measured FL, pentosidine, fluorescence (excitation = 328 nm, emission = 378 nm), CML, and CMhL in insoluble skin collagen from 14 insulin-dependent diabetic patients before and after a 4-mo period of intensive therapy to …

In Phase I of Mikhail Gorbachev's tenure as chief director of the soviet economic strategy, the General Secretary seemed content to continue an approach his predecessors had referred to as plan "perfecting" (sovershenstvovanie). This approach which called merely for the development and implementation of modest improvements in the planning mechanism. It was the chosen alternative to economic reform, the approach which had been peremptorily rejected with the closing of the Kosygin reforms at the end of the 1960s.

Spaceborne Radar Measurement Of Wind Velocity Over The Ocean-An Overview Of The Nscat Scatterometer System, David G. Long, F. M. Naderi, Michael H. Freilich

Scatterometry and scatterometer design issues are reviewed. The design of the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) to be flown on the Japanese ADEOS mission is presented. Building on Seasat experience, the NSCAT system includes several enhancements, such as three antenna azimuths in each of two swaths, and an onboard digital Doppler processor to allow backscatter measurements to be colocated everywhere within the orbit. These enhancements will greatly increase the quality of the NSCAT wind data. The ground processing of data is discussed, and scatterometers of the next decade are briefly described.

Professional auditing has become much more complex over the past decade. This development has engendered a need for leveraging auditor expertise. In an attempt to meet this need, public accounting firms have been actively involved in supporting the development and application of artificial intelligence methods in audit services, which forms the foundation of their business. Much of the development and application of artificial intelligence in auditing has taken the form of expert systems. This paper examines the current state of the art and provides a framework for analysis of present work, as well as a guide to future efforts.

Discusses the vocabularies in which literary critics since Matthew Arnold have described writing about place ("local," "regional," "national," "cosmopolitan," "peripheral," "central," "universal," "parochial," and "provincial"), and the differing perspectives of writers from Wordsworth to Thomas Hardy, to argue that the Victorian recognition of and ambivalence about provinciality is of lasting significance for understanding cultural identity in complex societies.

Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell

Although sociologists and economists have been widely concerned with parental investment in children, that investment has rarely been examined directly. The Parent Survey of the High School and Beyond data set provides material for examining the traits of parents and children that shape parental payment for higher education. Parents' reported willingness and ability to pay, along with savings for children's future education, are shaped first by total income and the number of children who must share that income. Moreover, parental investment in higher education is increased when the parents themselves received parental financial support, which suggests continuity over generations. Gender …

The floral fragrance glands (osmophores) of 18 species of Stanhopea and Sievekingia were examined through a series of developmental studies at light and electron microscope levels including late bud stages through postanthesis. Various characters were identified to be of potential systematic value and were recorded for each species. These characters included: texture of the osmophore surface, number of distinct cell layers comprising the osmophore, nature of lipid inclusions in osmophore cells, and presence or absence of plastoglobuli in osmophore amyloplasts. These characters were combined with traditional features of floral lip morphology for cladistic analysis. Sievekingia was the postulated outgroup. Stanhopea …

A two-dimensional lattice is considered with a linear charge-density gradient produced by a charge source at one end and a sink at the opposite end. A fraction p of the lattice sites are occupied by mobile particles that interact only with neighboring particles and empty sites (the substrate) and carry charges from source to sink; the charge neutrality of the whole lattice is maintained. The root-mean-square (rms) displacement of the particles (i.e., the tracers) and their effective conductivity for the charge transport are studied as a function of temperature and concentration p. To read 2 Corinthians is to watch a pastor at work. Paul practices, describes, defends, and commends to his audience his pastoral ministry. Something quite rare presents itself in this letter: an extended argument for the ministry of the gospel offered by a practitioner in the heat of the moment. My task is to disclose that heat. What does it mean to place pastoral practice at the center of the interpretation of Pauline epistles? Is this not anachronistic? The purpose was to compare the effectiveness of practice progressions on learning the volleyball serve and overhead set. Ninth-grade students were randomly assigned to three groups. Each group practiced the volleyball serve and set for 60 trials over 6 days. The progression group practiced four levels of difficulty of the set and serve. The criterion group began practice at the beginning level of difficulty and had to achieve an 80% success rate before practicing at a more advanced level. The third group practiced the AAHPERD volleyball skill tests for the serve and set for all 60 trials. At the end …

The theory of conducting fluids in relative motion with small conductivity is studied with a model including the Maxwell displacement current. The model is linearized, and the interaction of waves with a plane boundary in three space is studied for two orientations of the external magnetic field. It is found that two families of boundary conditions preserve energy in one orientation (external field orthogonal to the boundary), while in the other (external field parallel to the boundary) only one condition exists which preserves energy. It is shown that generalized Fourier transforms exist, generated from the generalized eigenfunction expansions. Further, it …

Theory Of An Atomic Beam Splitter Based On Velocity-Tuned Resonances, Scott Glasgow, P. Meystre, M. Wilkens, E. M. Wright

We develop the theory of an atomic beam splitter in which a monoenergetic beam of two-level atoms is incident normally to a classical standing-wave light field. The incident atomic wave function can be split into two coherent components with transverse momenta ±(2n + 1)fzk using velocity-tuned resonances, where n is the order of the resonance. We discuss the cases of zero- and first-order resonances in detail, and show that the velocity-tuned resonances are renormalized due to a high-frequency Stark shift. Numerical results that display the effects of a finite momentum spread in the incident atomic beam are presented.

The problem of identifiability of a wind vector that is estimated from wind scatterometer measurements of the radar backscatter of the ocean's surface is addressed. The traditional wind estimation approach produces multiple estimates of the wind direction. A second processing step, known as dealiasing or ambiguity removal, is used to select a single wind estimate from these multiple solutions. Dealiasing is typically based on various ad hoc considerations. The traditional wind estimation approach results in multiple solutions associated with local minima in an objective function formed from the noisy backscatter measurements. The basic concepts of Levi's epistemic utility theory and credal convexity are presented. Epistemic utility, in addition to penalizing error as is done with traditional Bayesian decision methodology, permits a unit of informational value to be distributed among the hypotheses of a decision problem. Convex Bayes decision theory retains the conditioning structure of probability-based inference, but addresses many of the objections to Bayesian inference through relaxation of the requirement for numerically definite probabilities. The result is a decision methodology that stresses avoiding errors and seeks decisions that are likely to be highly informative as well as true. By relaxing the …
