A Boundary-Layer Model Of A Parallel-Plate Electrochemical Reactor For The Destruction Of Nitrates And Nitrites In Alkaline Waste Solutions, Shailesh Prasad, John W. Weidner, Andrew E. Farell Jan 1995

A Boundary-Layer Model Of A Parallel-Plate Electrochemical Reactor For The Destruction Of Nitrates And Nitrites In Alkaline Waste Solutions, Shailesh Prasad, John W. Weidner, Andrew E. Farell

Faculty Publications

Electrochemical processes appear to be attractive for treating low level nuclear wastes. The development of a simple divided electrochemical-cell model operating in a batch mode, used for the reduction of nitrates and nitrites from nuclear wastes, is presented. This model, based on a boundary-layer approach, is simple and yet encompasses the key features of a previously developed distributed-parameter model that includes diffusion, migration, and convection as the flux components. Because it dramatically reduces computation time, this boundary-layer model is well suited for use in a complex interactive flowsheet model and for optimization studies. The boundary-layer model is used to predict …

The Effect Of Temperature And Ethanol On The Deposition Of Nickel Hydroxide Films, Christopher C. Streinz, Sathya Motupally, John W. Weidner Jan 1995

The Effect Of Temperature And Ethanol On The Deposition Of Nickel Hydroxide Films, Christopher C. Streinz, Sathya Motupally, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

The objective of this work was to determine the effect of the temperature and the ethanol content of the Ni(NO3)2 solution on: (i) the efficiency of electrochemical deposition of nickel hydroxide; and (ii) the molecular weight of the deposited film. An electrochemical quartz crystal nanobalance (EQCN) was used to measure the mass of films electrochemically deposited from Ni(NO3)2 solutions and constant current discharges were used to determine the electrochemical capacity of the films. The data indicates that increasing the temperature increases both the efficiency of the deposition reaction and the …

Electrowinning Of Non-Noble Metals With Simultaneous Hydrogen Evolution At Flow-Through Porous Electrodes I. Theoretical, Mahmoud M. Saleh, John W. Weidner, Badr G. Ateya Jan 1995

Electrowinning Of Non-Noble Metals With Simultaneous Hydrogen Evolution At Flow-Through Porous Electrodes I. Theoretical, Mahmoud M. Saleh, John W. Weidner, Badr G. Ateya

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is developed to simulate the electrowinning of non-noble metals (e.g., Zn, Cr) within flow-through porous electrodes under the conditions of simultaneous evolution of hydrogen gas bubbles. The results of the model are presented as a function of several dimensionless groups representing kinetics, mass transfer, ohmic resistance, and gas bubbles. These coupled, nonlinear effects are investigated by examining the distributions of the metal reduction and hydrogen evolution currents, coulombic efficiency of the metal electrowinning reaction, and gas void fractions under a series of limiting conditions. The gas bubbles accentuate the nonuniform distribution of the potential and …

A Parallel-Plate Electrochemical Reactor Model For The Destruction Of Nitrate And Nitrite In Alkaline Waste Solutions, D. H. Coleman, Ralph E. White, D. T. Hobbs Jan 1995

A Parallel-Plate Electrochemical Reactor Model For The Destruction Of Nitrate And Nitrite In Alkaline Waste Solutions, D. H. Coleman, Ralph E. White, D. T. Hobbs

Faculty Publications

A parallel-plate electrochemical reactor model with multiple reactions at both electrodes and anolyte and catholyte recirculation tanks was modeled for the electrochemical destruction of nitrate and nitrite species in an alkaline solution. The model can be used to predict electrochemical reaction current efficiencies and outlet concentrations of species from the reactor, given inlet feed conditions and cell operating conditions. Also, predictions are made for off-gas composition and liquid-phase composition in the recirculation tanks. The results of case studies at different applied potentials are shown here. At lower applied potentials, the model predictions show that the destruction process is more energy …

Electrochemical Determination Of The Diffusion Coefficient Of Hydrogen Through An Lani4.25Al0.75 Electrode In Alkaline Aqueous Solution, G. Zheng, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

The constant potential and constant current discharge techniques were used to determine the hydrogen diffusion coefficients in an LaNi4.25Al0.75 electrode. The values obtained were 2.97 × 10–11 and 3.30 × 10–11 cm2/s, respectively. The advantages and disadvantages of these two techniques are discussed.

Predicting The Effects Of Climate Change On Water Yield And Forest Production In The Northeastern United States, John D. Aber, Scott V. Ollinger, Anthony C. Federer, Peter B. Reich, David W. Kicklighter, Jerry M. Melillo, R. G. Lathrop Jr.

Faculty Publications

Rapid and simultaneous changes in temperature, precipitation and the atmospheric concentration of CO2 are predicted to occur over the next century. Simple, well-validated models of ecosystem function are required to predict the effects of these changes. This paper describes an improved version of a forest carbon and water balance model (PnET-II) and the application of the model to predict stand- and regional-level effects of changes in temperature, precipitation and atmospheric CO2 concentration. PnET-II is a simple, generalized, monthly time-step model of water and carbon balances (gross and net) driven by nitrogen availability as expressed through foliar N concentration. Improvements from …

Modeling Physical And Chemical Climate Of The Northeastern United States For A Geographic Information System, Scott V. Ollinger, John D. Aber, Anthony C. Federer, Gary M. Lovett, Jennifer M. Ellis

Faculty Publications

A model of physical and chemical climate was developed for New York and New England that can be used in a GIs for integration with ecosystem models. The variables included are monthly average maximum and minimum daily temperatures, precipitation, humidity, and solar radiation, as well as annual atmospheric deposition of sulfur and nitrogen. Equations generated from regional data bases were combined with a digital elevation model of the region to generate digital coverages of each variable.

Somatic Embryogenesis And Polyamines In Woody Plants, Rakesh Minocha, Subhash C. Minocha, Liisa Kaarina Simola

Faculty Publications

The formation of whole plants from cultured cells is interesting not only because of its applications for mass propagation but also as a prime example of the process of controlled development and differentiation in plants. Cultures capable of producing somatic embryos with high frequency provide ideal experimental systems to study and understand the biochemical basis of hormonal regulation of the developmental process. This knowledge should lead to the planning of media and various treatments that allow us to obtain whole plants from single cells in recalcitrant plant species.

Recent work by anthropologists, folklorists, and semioticians has made significant strides in our understanding of the dynamics and poetics of spoken utterances. Such work has been motivated, generally, by the goal of understanding verbal expression in terms of its own unique structures and expressive modalities. The following paper will contribute to this line of inquiry. It offers an analysis of a form of expression, sound symbolism, that is widely used by people whose languages have not been written down. The main advantage of this analysis is that it rescues sound symbolism from the irrational abyss into which it has often …

Self-Regulation In Global Electronic Markets Through Reinvigorated Trade Usages, Raj Bhala Jan 1995

Self-Regulation In Global Electronic Markets Through Reinvigorated Trade Usages, Raj Bhala

Faculty Publications

In a global electronic market the role of trade usages must be reinvigorated to better suit the needs of market participants. Contrary to the approach to trade usages often adopted by courts and scholars, usages should not be seen as merely a device to interpret disputed terms in a contract. Rather, they should be viewed as a legal foundation for existing and new trade practices and, therefore, as a source of authority for and legal obligation arising from such practices. In sum, they should be regarded as a means by which participants in global eiectronic markets can engage in self-regulation. …

Who Needs Doctrines? Jesus Is Coming!, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 1995

Who Needs Doctrines? Jesus Is Coming!, P. Gerard Damsteegt

The name “Seventh-day Adventist” reveals the major characteristics of the remnant church, highlighting the importance of the Sabbath and the second advent. From time to time one hears the opinion that these are really all that matter and that all other doctrines or fundamental beliefs are really not that crucial. Over the years, it seems, doctrine has gotten a bad reputation. Some feel we harp too much on doctrine and not enough on love. Others feel doctrines don’t save, only Jesus does. Still others would intimate that doctrines make us “legalistic” and “behavior-oriented.”

Rethinking Future Advance Mortgages: A Brief For The Restatement Approach, Dale A. Whitman, Grant S. Nelson

Faculty Publications

The advantages of such arrangements, under which the mortgagor takes none or only a portion of the loan at the outset but receives the balance in the future, are substantial. The mortgagor saves interest on the unadvanced portion until it is needed and avoids the need to invest this portion at an interest rate that at least equals the rate being paid to the lender. Moreover, both parties avoid the expense and paperwork inherent in refinancing the initial loan or in executing a series of junior mortgages to secure each advance. Finally, in the construction loan context, before committing large …

The employment patterns of “nontraditional” workers in the United States show two conflicting characteristics. On the one hand, researchers have observed a continuing increase in the rate of participation of nontraditional workers at multiple levels in the work force. For example, the proportion of women white collar workers increased from twenty-two percent in the late 1960s to forty-six percent in 1992. Similarly, the average job tenure for nontraditional workers has also increased. For example, although males in the thirty-five to forty-four year old age group have experienced a small decline in job tenure, women in the same group have seen …
