Student Evaluations Of Teaching Effectiveness: The Interpretation Of Observational Data And The Principle Of Faute De Mieux, B. Burt Gerstman Jan 1995

Student Evaluations Of Teaching Effectiveness: The Interpretation Of Observational Data And The Principle Of Faute De Mieux, B. Burt Gerstman

Faculty Publications

Student opinion surveys are important but widely misunderstood tools for evaluating teaching effectiveness. In this brief review, an analogy is drawn between the use and interpretation of observational data for public health and biomedical research and the use of student opinion data in evaluating teach ing effectiveness. Sources of systematic error in the form of selection bias, information bias, and confounding are defined and illustrated. Original data concerning intermittent "quid pro quo" confounding (i.e., the effect of expected grades on student evaluations of teaching) are presented. Finally, the principle of faute de mieux ("lack of anything better") and the interpretation …

The Contemporary Confucian-Christian Encounter: Interreligious Or Intrareligious Dialogue, Christian Jochim Jan 1995

The Contemporary Confucian-Christian Encounter: Interreligious Or Intrareligious Dialogue, Christian Jochim

Faculty Publications

The discipline of comparative religions has paid little attention to perhaps the most important religious phenomenon of the late twentieth century: interreligious dialogue. Available scholarship on this topic is largely written by and for participants in various dialogues. This scholarship is mainly on the normative issues that concern participants, thus leaving the need for descriptive, analytical scholarship largely unfilled. This essay engages in descriptive analysis of a relatively new twentieth-century dialogue—the Confucian-Christian dialogue—which, nevertheless, has deep historical roots. The essay turns, first, to history, summarizing two different periods of past Confucian-Christian encounter: the period from Matteo Ricci (1552–1610) to the …

Health Insurance Availability And The Retirement Decision, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1995

Health Insurance Availability And The Retirement Decision, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

Because individuals aged 55-64 face large and uncertain medical expenditures without the guarantee of public insurance coverage provided by Medicare, the availability of post-retirement health insurance could be an important detenninant in the retirement decisions of this group. We investigate the effect of health insurance on retirement by focusing on state and federal "continuation of coverage" mandates which grant the retiree the right to continue purchasing health insurance through a previous employer for a specified number of months after leaving the firm. We exploit variation in the timing and generosity of these laws to identify the effect of the availability …

The Evolution Of American Probate Courts And Emerging Standards To Guide Their Progress, Thomas L. Hafemeister, Paula Hannaford-Agor Jan 1995

The Evolution Of American Probate Courts And Emerging Standards To Guide Their Progress, Thomas L. Hafemeister, Paula Hannaford-Agor

Faculty Publications

Courts with probate jurisdiction are an excellent example of the evolution of American courts. Despite the fact that they are direct descendants of the English judicial system, the structure, jurisdiction, and procedures of the probate courts assumed a uniquely American flavor soon after their initial establishment in the colonies. From the beginning, American probate courts have shown considerable diversity from state to state. State courts exercising probate jurisdiction have continued to evolve over time in response to the various demands placed upon them. This article describes the historical evolution of American courts exercising jurisdiction over probate matters, with specific attention …

Structural Ambiguities And Written Advertisements: An Inventory Of Tools For More Resourceful Advertisements In English, Dallin D. Oaks Jan 1995

Structural Ambiguities And Written Advertisements: An Inventory Of Tools For More Resourceful Advertisements In English, Dallin D. Oaks

Faculty Publications

Competent writers usually avoid ambiguity, but there are some types of writing tasks such as advertising in which a writer might actually want to create ambiguous wordplays. Among the most interesting of the wordplays are those which involve structural ambiguities. In the natural course of brainstorming, advertisers will occasionally generate structural ambiguities, but a more conscious understanding of the structure of a language could make the generation of such ambiguities easier. The English language contains some characteristics and patterns which contribute significantly toward creating structural ambiguities. And if ad writers know where to focus their attention, structurally ambiguous wordplays can …

Effects Of Pyrolysis Conditions On Internal Surface Areas And Densities Of Coal Chars Prepared At High Heating Rates In Reactive And Non-Reactive Atmospheres, Thomas K. Gale, Thomas H. Fletcher, Calvin H. Bartholomew Jan 1995

Effects Of Pyrolysis Conditions On Internal Surface Areas And Densities Of Coal Chars Prepared At High Heating Rates In Reactive And Non-Reactive Atmospheres, Thomas K. Gale, Thomas H. Fletcher, Calvin H. Bartholomew

Faculty Publications

Concern about comparability and validity of different methods for producing coal chars for reactivity experiments has led to research on the effect of devolatilization conditions on the char physical and chemical structure. Particle diameter and porosity changes during devolatilization significantly affect char oxidation rates. In particular, physical properties of chars prepared in drop tube reactors differ greatly from chars prepared in fiat flame burner experiments. Recent data indicate that the presence of oxygen in the gas atmosphere has no effect on swelling until char oxidation has begun. The present research concentrates on the effects of heating rate, particle temperature and …

Partial Pixels: A Three-Dimensional Diffractive Display Architecture, Gregory P. Nordin, M. W. Jones, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist, P. J. Nasiatka, A. Parker Jan 1995

Partial Pixels: A Three-Dimensional Diffractive Display Architecture, Gregory P. Nordin, M. W. Jones, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist, P. J. Nasiatka, A. Parker

Faculty Publications

We describe in detail the partial pixel architecture that permits the realization of three-dimensional (3-D) displays that are functionally equivalent to a real-time holographic stereogram. This architecture permits the simultaneous presentation of multiple stereoscopic images so that motion parallax is discernible in the resultant 3-D scene. The key innovation of the architecture is that each pixel is subdivided into partial pixels, which in turn can be implemented as individual diffraction gratings. We describe a static display that exhibits a 3-D image with one-dimensional motion parallax, thereby demonstrating key features of the architecture. A variety of partial pixel implementations are discussed …

Using Multiple Statistical Prototypes To Classify Continuously Valued Data, Tony R. Martinez, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Multiple Statistical Prototypes (MSP) is a modification of a standard minimum distance classification scheme that generates muItiple prototypes per class using a modified greedy heuristic. Empirical comparison of MSP with other well-known learning algorithms shows MSP to be a robust algorithm that uses a very simple premise to produce good generalization and achieve parsimonious hypothesis representation.

My diploma proved I knew English; my teaching certificate proved I knew how to teach it. Armed only with these and a head filled with idealistic visions of myself as the next Mr. Chips, I landed my first teaching job. As a mid-year graduate, I was lucky to flnd any high school job, so I jumped at the first, and only, offer. I started work on January 3, taking over for an established teacher who at mid-term had gone on permanent disability leave.

Thermophoretic Sampling Of Coal-Derived Soot Particles During Devolatilization, Jinliang Ma, Thomas H. Fletcher, Brent W. Webb Jan 1995

Thermophoretic Sampling Of Coal-Derived Soot Particles During Devolatilization, Jinliang Ma, Thomas H. Fletcher, Brent W. Webb

Faculty Publications

Thermophoretic sampling of soot particles formed during high-temperature coal devolatilization is performed in order to examine soot particle sizes and shapes. Coal particles are injected along the centerline of a laminar flow flat flame burner, where a fuel-rich methane-air flame is used as a heat source. Volatiles released from the coal particles form a cloud of soot particles at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. A carbon-coated microscope grid is briefly inserted into the soot cloud, where the temperature gradient between the soot particles and the cold grid surface causes the migration of soot particles and results in deposition. …

Organizing Tax Instruction: Evidence Regarding The Way Students Organize Tax Knowledge, Stephen T. Limberg, Michael S. Schadewald, Brian C. Spilker Jan 1995

Organizing Tax Instruction: Evidence Regarding The Way Students Organize Tax Knowledge, Stephen T. Limberg, Michael S. Schadewald, Brian C. Spilker

Faculty Publications

An important part of accounting curriculum reform is a movement away from traditional methods of organizing accounting courses toward improved organization schemes. Two basic approaches to organizing the content of tax courses are a transaction-based scheme and an entity-based scheme. This paper reports the results of an experiment that investigates which scheme is more consistent with how incoming masters in tax students organize tax knowledge and how different schemes affect the manner in which graduating students organize tax knowledge. Ninety students drawn from two full-time masters in taxation programs participated in the study. Subjects individually completed three separate tasks that …

Phonatory And Articulatory Changes Associated With Increased Vocal Intensity In Parkinson Disease: A Case Study, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig, Antonia B. Johnson Jan 1995

Phonatory And Articulatory Changes Associated With Increased Vocal Intensity In Parkinson Disease: A Case Study, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig, Antonia B. Johnson

Faculty Publications

This study examined changes in voice and speech production in a patient with Parkinson disease as he increased vocal intensity following 1 month of intensive voice treatment. Phonatory function and articulatory acoustic measures were made before and after treatment as well as 6 and 12 months later. Pre- to post-treatment increases were documented in sound pressure level in sustained phonation, syllable repetition, reading, and monologue. Consistent with mechanisms of intensity change reported in normal speakers, corresponding improvements were measured in estimated subglottal pressure, maximum flow declination rate, laryngeal airway resistance, open quotient, EGGW-25, harmonic-spectral slope, and maximum vowel duration. Measures …

Waterjet Cutting Of Cross-Linked Glass, Fang Yuan, John A. Johnson, David D. Allred, Robert H. Todd Jan 1995

Waterjet Cutting Of Cross-Linked Glass, Fang Yuan, John A. Johnson, David D. Allred, Robert H. Todd

Faculty Publications

The cutting of cross-linked glasses such as silica and Corning 7059 can be difficult. We conducted an experimental study to determine the feasibility of using a high-speed waterjet to cut thin Corning 7095 glass. Cutting using either pure de-ionized high pressure water at 380 MPa (55 000 psi) or de-ionized water with entrained garnet abrasive was studied. The roughness of the cut surfaces was measured and compared. Photomicrographs were taken of glass examples cut at different traversing rates with pure water and with the abrasive entrained waterjet. Comparative studies of cutting with and without the entrained abrasive material showed that …

Xenon 147-Nm Resonance Ƒ Value And Trapped Decay Rates, H. M. Anderson, Scott D. Bergeson, D. A. Doughty, J. E. Lawler

Faculty Publications

The absorption oscillator strength of the xenon 147-nm resonance transition is measured to be 0.264±0.016. This value is from direct absorption measurements with equivalent widths from ≈ 1 to ≈ 10 cm-1. This ƒ-value measurement is compared to others in the literature and is used in Monte Carlo simulations of trapped decay rates. The simulations include an angle-dependent partial frequency redistribution. The simulation results are compared to trapped decay rates in the literature.

Using Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: Practices, Successes, Failures, And Ethical Concerns Of Mormon Psychotherapists, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts Jan 1995

Using Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: Practices, Successes, Failures, And Ethical Concerns Of Mormon Psychotherapists, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts

Faculty Publications

Two hundred and fifteen (out of 300) randomly selected Mormon psychotherapists were surveyed and asked to indicate how frequently they use various spiritual interventions in psychotherapy and to describe successful and unsuccessful spiritual intervention case examples. The therapists indi- cated that they use a wide variety of spiritual interventions, including praying silently for clients, teaching spiritual concepts, encouraging forgiveness, and using the religious community as a sup- port. Many spiritual interventions were perceived by the therapists as potentially therapeutic. Pro- cess guidelines for using spiritual interventions were offered by the therapists, and ethical concerns (e.g., dual relationships, imposing values) were …

The Impact Of Dap Inservice Training Of The Beliefs And Practices Of Kindergarten Teachers, Julia H. Haupt, Jean M. Larsen, Clyde C. Robinson, Craig H. Hart Jan 1995

The Impact Of Dap Inservice Training Of The Beliefs And Practices Of Kindergarten Teachers, Julia H. Haupt, Jean M. Larsen, Clyde C. Robinson, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

As teacher training institutions have adopted the NAEYC standards for developmentally appropriate practices (hereinafter DAP) (Bredekamp, 1987) and have begun to routinely train pre-service teachers in these principles the need for student teaching experiences which reflect this orientation has become a priority for many teacher educators. However, locating developmentally appropriate placement settings, particularly when large numbers of student teachers are being trained simultaneously, may be difficult in some localities.

Case-Based Reasoning: Application Techniques For Decision Support, James V. Hansen, Rayman D. Meservy, Larry E. Wood Jan 1995

Case-Based Reasoning: Application Techniques For Decision Support, James V. Hansen, Rayman D. Meservy, Larry E. Wood

Faculty Publications

Decision-support systems can be improved by enabling them to use past decisions to assist in making present ones. Reasoning from relevant past cases is appealing because it corresponds to some of the processes an expert uses to solve problems quickly and accurately. All this depends on an effective method of organizing cases for retrieval. This paper investigates the use of inductive networks as a means for case organization and outlines an approach to determining the desired number of cases-or assessing the reliability of a given number. Our method is demonstrated by application to decision making on corporate tax audits.

Alu elements are a family of interspersed repeats that have mobilized throughout primate genomes by retroposition from a few 'master' genes. Among the 500,000 Alu elements in the human genome are members of the human- specific subfamily that are not fixed in the human species; that is, not all chromosomes carry an Alu element at a particular locus. Four such polymorphic human-specific Alu insertions were analyzed by a rapid, PCR-based assay that uses primers that flank the insertion point to determine genotypes based on the presence or absence of the Alu element. These four polymorphic Alu insertions were shown to …
