Hydrogen-Atom Direct-Entry Mechanism Into Metal Membranes, G. Zheng, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
The hydrogen-atom direct-entry mechanism is used to explain why the steady-state hydrogen permeation current density through a metal membrane is directly proportional to the cathodic current density, ic, and is independent of the membrane thickness when ic is small.

This paper presents an interpretation of the experimental results obtained on the electrowinning of zinc at a flow-through porous electrode in light of a mathematical model which was presented in Part I. The process is accompanied by simultaneous hydrogen evolution within the electrode, which increases the pore electrolyte resistivity and decreases the coulombic efficiency. We measured polarization curves, coulombic efficiencies, and current distributions under various conditions of zincate concentrations, flow rates, cell current, and electrode thickness. Reasonable agreement between the measured and predicted current distributions was obtained only under conditions of high electrolyte flow rates, low cell currents, and thinner …

Mathematical Modeling Of A Nickel-Cadmium Cell: Proton Diffusion In The Nickel Electrode, Pauline De Vidts, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
In this paper we present a mathematical model of a sealed nickel-cadmium cell that includes proton diffusion and ohmic drop through the active material in the nickel electrode. The model is used to calculate sensitivity coefficients for various parameters in the model. These calculations show that the discharge voltage of the cell is affected mostly by the kinetics of the nickel reaction. Toward the end of discharge, proton diffusion also becomes important, because the proton diffusion process affects the active material utilization significantly. During charge, the cell voltage is mainly affected by the kinetics of the nickel reaction until the …

The metal hydride (MHx) electrode is the negative electrode in one of the most advanced secondary batteries (i.e.,nickel/metal hydride). The objective of this study is to obtain insight on the mechanism of the hydriding/dehydridingreaction in the battery by using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique. An equivalent circuit for the MHx electrode reaction is proposed. The rate capability of charge and discharge of the MHx electrode is determined by thekinetics of the charge-transfer reaction at the alloy surface, which is mainly represented by the EIS responses in the lowfrequency region. Transient and pseudo-steady-state analyses …

Role Of Erythroid Kruppel-Like Factor In Human Γ- To Β-Globin Gene Switching, D. Donze, T. M. Townes, J. J. Bieker
Faculty Publications
Erythroid Kruppel-like factor (EKLF) is an erythroid-specific transcription factor that contains zinc finger domains similar to the Kruppel protein of Drosophila melanogaster. Previous studies demonstrated that EKLF binds to the CACCC box in the human β-globin gene promoter and activates transcription. CACCC box mutations that cause severe β-thalassemias in humans inhibit EKLF binding. Results described in this paper suggest that EKLF functions predominately in adult erythroid tissue. The EKLF gene is expressed at a 3-fold higher level in adult erythroid tissue than in fetal erythroid tissue, and the EKLF protein binds to the human β-globin promoter 8-fold more efficiently than …

Historical Aspects Of Somatic Embryogenesis In Woody Plants, Subhash C. Minocha, Rakesh Minocha
Faculty Publications
During the next few decades, the world demand for wood products is expected to rise sharply. To meet this growing demand, there will be an increasing need for mass production of improved-quality planting stock of many tree species. The conventional methods of tree improvement and selection offer only limited possibility of meeting the growing demands. Therefore, new and innovative techniques for the creation of new hybrids, early selection and testing of desirable genotypes, rapid vegetative propagation of selected genotypes, and improvement through genetic engineering, etc., must be developed to achieve these goals.

Default Risk And The Effective Duration Of Bonds, David F. Babbel, Craig B. Merrill, William Panning
Default Risk And The Effective Duration Of Bonds, David F. Babbel, Craig B. Merrill, William Panning
Faculty Publications
Basis risk is the risk attributable to uncertain movements in the spread between yields associated with a particular financial instrument or class of instruments, and a reference interest rate over time. There are seven types of basis risk: Yields on
- Long-term versus short-term financial instruments.
- Domestic currency versus foreign currencies.
- Liquid versus illiquid investments.
- Bonds with higher or lower sensitivity to changes in interest rate volatility.
- Taxable versus tax-free instruments.
- Spot versus futures contracts.
- Default-free versus non-default-free securities.
Basis risk makes it difficult for the fixed-income portfolio manager to measure the portfolio's exposure to interest rate risk, heightens the anxiety …
Frederic Rzewski And Spontaneous Political Music, Christian T. Asplund
Frederic Rzewski And Spontaneous Political Music, Christian T. Asplund
Faculty Publications
I am intrigued by Frederic Rzewski's ability, in his pieces from the 1960s and 70s, to model socio-political phenomena and to teach specific lessons about these phenomena on both intuitive and intellectual levels to both performers and listeners. Performers in particular will literally experience these socio-political phenomena in the course of performing these pieces. Rzewski seems to have achieved Brecht's ideal of a gestic music without dryness or lack of credibility.

New Optical Cell Design For Laser Flash Photolysis Studies In Supercritical Fluids, Steven R. Goates, Milton L. Lee, Qin Ji, Edward M. Eyring, Rudi Van Eldik, Kedika Bal Reddy
Faculty Publications
A high-pressure optical cell has been designed that achieves an effective separation between the chemical sample and the pressurizing medium and system. This design limits possible sample contamination and catalytic effects under supercritical fluid sample conditions. Laser flash photolysis experiments were carried out on molybdenum hexacarbonyl dissolved in supercritical CO2. The thermal ring closure reaction of the species Mo(CO)5L, where L is 2,2- bipyridine was found to proceed at rates comparable to those measured previously in liquid benzene or toluene. Much larger activation volumes were found for the reaction in supercritical CO2 than in liquid toluene.

Slow Motion In One-Dimensional Cahn-Morral Systems, Christopher P. Grant
Faculty Publications
In this paper we study one-dimensional Cahn-Morral systems, which are the multicomponent analogues of the Cahn-Hilliard model for phase separation and coarsening in binary mixtures. In particular, we examine solutions that start with initial data close to the preferred phases except at finitely many transition points where the data has sharp transition layers, and we show that such solutions may evolve exponentially slowly; i.e., if ε is the interaction length then there exists a constant C such that in exp(C/ε) units of time the change in such a solution is o(1). This corresponds to extremely slow coarsening of a multicomponent …

Em Interaction Of Handset Antennas And A Human In Personal Communications, Michael A. Jensen, Yahya Rahmat-Samii
Faculty Publications
In personal communications, the electromagnetic interaction between handset-mounted antennas and the nearby biological tissue is a key consideration. This paper presents a thorough investigation of this antenna-tissue interaction using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) electromagnetic simulation approach with detailed models of real-life antennas on a transceiver handset. The monopole, side-mounted planar inverted F, top-mounted bent inverted F, and back-mounted planar inverted F antennas are selected as representative examples of external and internal configurations. Detailed models of the human head and hand are implemented to investigate the effects of the tissue location and physical model on the antenna performance. Experimental results are …

A Theory Of Verbal Completeness, Dale A. Nance

In this Article I will endorse the view that the most important modem function of the completeness rule is to trump otherwise applicable exclusionary rules, though not every rule in every instance. I will also offer the general proposition that it should almost always trump one large and important class of exclusionary rules, those based upon the "best evidence" principle, that is, the principle that parties should present to the tribunal the epistemically best evidence available to them on a given litigated issue.

Over the past decade, fueled in part by Carol Gilligan's controversial book, In a Different Voice, both feminists and scholars of color have critically examined the law from the "outsiders'" perspective. Stretching methodological bounds, this interrelated body of scholarship has utilized narrative form to question the gender and racial implications of social practices and legal rules and to demonstrate the useful purpose that stories serve as a means of including marginalized groups in law's evolution and reform. Women scholars of color have carved out a particular role in this debate, criticizing feminism's categorical conceptualization of "woman." They have advanced …

(Excerpt)
In the United States, historically, members of racial and sexual minority groups have been prevented from effectively participating in governmental decisionmaking because the political districting system denies them adequate representation in the political process. Following the 1990 census, blacks, in particular, saw significant gains in their political representation as a result of redistricting, only to suffer a sharp reduction of their voting rights with the U.S. Supreme Court's decisions in the Shaw and Miller cases. Whereas voting rights litigation once explored ways to prevent minority vote dilution, today's jurisprudence focuses on the ramifications of the "stigma" faced by blacks …

(Excerpt)
The national debate concerning the inadequacies of public schools in the United States and ways to alleviate some of the problems that plague them continues to rage. The performance of children in the United States on standardized tests is dangerously poor, and the rate of illiteracy dangerously high. An alarmingly large number of students do not finish high school. Education is often compromised because of crowded classrooms and shortages in school personnel and textbooks. Part of the debate about the problems in public education involves the search for someone or something to blame. While societal problems contribute to the …

In the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, Congress enacted a comprehensive scheme for regulating the national securities markets. Pursuant to that scheme, the Securities and Exchange Commission was given ultimate authority to enforce the newly enacted securities laws against market participants. The Exchange Act also created a prominent enforcement role for national securities exchanges, like the New York Stock Exchange. Congress required these self-regulatory organizations as a condition for their continued operation to enforce, among other things, compliance by their members with the provisions of the Exchange Act and the rules and regulations promulgated thereunder. The SROs were also given …

Drafting Mediation Privileges: Lessons From The Civil Justice Reform Act, Michael A. Perino
Faculty Publications
Mediation confidentiality provisions or privileges are now prevalent throughout the United States. Forty-one states have enacted some form of mediation privilege. As part of the Administrative Dispute Resolution Act of 1990, Congress enacted legislation to protect confidentiality in mediations involving federal agencies. An additional source for such provisions is the Civil Justice Reform Act of 1990 (CJRA), which required each federal district court to implement a civil justice expense and delay reduction plan (Plan(s)) by the end of 1993. Those Plans seek to implement mechanisms designed to address causes of excessive expense and delay in the federal courts.

Severability In Statutes And Contracts, Mark L. Movsesian
Severability In Statutes And Contracts, Mark L. Movsesian
Faculty Publications
Established doctrine on the severability of unconstitutional statutory provisions has drawn criticism on almost every conceivable basis. Commentators have condemned severability doctrine as too malleable and as too rigid; as encouraging judicial overreaching and as encouraging judicial abdication. They have criticized the doctrine's reliance on legislative intent and its disregard of legislative intent; its excessive attention to political concerns and its inattention to political concerns; its lack of any coherent explanation.
The reasons for this lingering controversy are easy to discern. One is purely pragmatic. "We live in an age of statutes." Legislation provides our primary source of law in …

"X-Net" is a computer simulation that I developed in conjunction with Network Exchange Theory. Users of X-Net can explore the effects of different network structures, rules of exchange, and negotiators' strategies on the dynamics and outcomes of resource exchanges in social networks. This article recounts the process of X-Net's development, in addition to key substantive, theoretical, and design issues that motivated its form and content. It concludes with a discussion of the relationship between theory, simulation, and empirical tests.
The Psychological Relevance Of Phonological Generalizations In Spanish: An Experiment, David Eddington
The Psychological Relevance Of Phonological Generalizations In Spanish: An Experiment, David Eddington
Faculty Publications
A psycholinguistic experiment aids in determining if the phonological generalizations which appear in the literature on Spanish phonology are psychologically significant for Spanish speakers. The experiment focuses on whether common phonological alternations play a role in native speakers' perceptions of whether two words share a morpheme. The results indicate that they are a significant factor in speakers' perceptions of morphemic relatedness. Therefore, these findings provide some evidence that these phonological generalizations are psychologically valid, and not merely descriptive in nature.

An electrochemical quartz crystal nanobalance (EQCN) has been utilized to measure the mass of Ni(OH)2 films electrochemically deposited from Ni(NO3)2 solutions. The objective of this work was to quantify electrochemical deposition as a function of deposition conditions. The changing mass recorded on the EQCN was demonstrated to be the result of Ni(OH)2 deposition. Deposited mass was observed to increase proportionally with applied charge as suggested by previous investigators. Most significantly, the rate of deposition was found to decrease more than an order of magnitude as the Ni(NO3)2 concentration increased from 0.2 to …

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to measure the solid-state diffusion coefficient of protons in nickel hydroxide films at room temperature as a function of state of charge (SOC). A model for the complex faradaic impedance of the nickel hydroxide active material is presented and used to extract the diffusion coefficient of protons from the EIS data. Impedance data over a range of frequencies can be used to extract a constant diffusion coefficient without the knowledge of the initial mobile proton concentration or the form of the charge-transfer kinetic expression. The proton diffusion coefficient is a strong function of SOC …
