Bis[(Anhydro-Meso-Rhodochlorinato-Xv Methyl Ester)Zinc(Ii)], Mathias O. Senge, Kevin M. Smith

Faculty Publications

The title compound, bis[(methyl 8,13-diethyl-2,21,22,2 3-tetrahydro-3,7,12,17-tetramethyl-2 3-oxo-3H-benzo[at]-porphyrin-18-carboxylato-κ4N) zinc (II)], [Zn(C33H34-N4O3)]2, has similar structural characteristics to the naturally occurring factor F430 and forms dimers that are held together by axial interactions between the zinc(II) center and the cyclohexanone carbonyl O atom of a neighboring macrocycle [Zn - O3 2.204 (3) Å]. These dimers form infinite stacks in the crystal stabilized by π-π interactions between the aromatic ring systems.

Age-Dependent Increase In Ortho-Tyrosine And Methionine Sulfoxide In Human Skin Collagen Is Not Accelerated In Diabetes: Evidence Against A Generalized Increase In Oxidative Stress In Diabetes, Mary C. Wells-Knecht, Timothy J. Lyons, David R. Mccance, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Aug 1997

Baynes

Faculty Publications

The glycoxidation products Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine increase in skin collagen with age and at an accelerated rate in diabetes. Their age-adjusted concentrations in skin collagen are correlated with the severity of diabetic complications. To determine the relative roles of increased glycation and/or oxidation in the accelerated formation of glycoxidation products in diabetes, we measured levels of amino acid oxidation products, distinct from glycoxidative modifications of amino acids, as independent indicators of oxidative stress and damage to collagen in aging and diabetes. We show that ortho-tyrosine and methionine sulfoxide are formed in concert with Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine during glycoxidation of collagen …

Hypertension In Blacks, R. Cooper, C. Rotimi Aug 1997

Hypertension In Blacks, R. Cooper, C. Rotimi

Faculty Publications

The excess of hypertension among blacks has been recognized since early in this century and explains a substantial portion of the black health disadvantage. In a cohort study begun in the 1970s, hypertension accounted for 20% of all-cause mortality among blacks, compared to 10% among whites. National data on trends in hypertension (140/90 mm Hg or treatment) prevalence from 1960 to 1990 suggest a decline from 44% to 32%, although differences in survey technique likely account for this pattern. During this period the prevalence ratio of black:white remained constant at 1.5, suggesting that secular trends in causal factors, if any, …

In Vivo Kinetics Of A Redox-Regulated Transcriptional Switch, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple Aug 1997

In Vivo Kinetics Of A Redox-Regulated Transcriptional Switch, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple

Faculty Publications

SoxR is a transcription activator governing a cellular response to superoxide and nitric oxide in Escherichia coli. SoxR protein is a homodimer, and each monomer has a redox-active [2Fe-2S] cluster. Oxidation and reduction of the [2Fe-2S] clusters can reversibly activate and inactivate SoxR transcriptional activity. Here, we use electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to follow the redox-switching process of SoxR protein in vivo. SoxR [2Fe-2S] clusters were in the fully reduced state during normal aerobic growth, but were completely oxidized after only 2-min aerobic exposure of the cells to superoxide-generating agents such as paraquat. The oxidized SoxR [2Fe-2S] clusters were rapidly …

Smith On Jenkins, 'Textual Poachers: Television Fans And Participatory Culture', Anne Collins Smith

Faculty Publications

Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture by Henry Jenkins. New York: Routledge, 1992. viii + 343 pp. $95.00 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-415-90571-8; $38.95 (paper), ISBN 978-0-415-90572-5.

In Textual Poachers, Henry Jenkins examines the underground world of the media fandom, people who create fiction, artwork, and other forms of expression based on television shows. Drawing on a rich theoretical background with sources ranging from feminist literary criticism to cultural anthropology, Jenkins applies and adapts Michel de Certeau's model of "poaching," in which an audience appropriates a text for itself. Taking a stand against the stereotypical portrayal of fans as obsessive …

Property Fields In An Effluent Plume Of The Mississippi River, G. L. Hitchcock, W. J. Wiseman, W. C. Boicourt, A. J. Mariano, N. Walker, T. A. Nelsen, E. Ryan Aug 1997

Property Fields In An Effluent Plume Of The Mississippi River, G. L. Hitchcock, W. J. Wiseman, W. C. Boicourt, A. J. Mariano, N. Walker, T. A. Nelsen, E. Ryan

Faculty Publications

Surface property distributions were mapped in the Mississippi River plume during May and August, 1993 while following surface drifters. Prevailing winds were the primary factor controlling the orientation of the plume. In May, under typical southeasterly winds, the plume turned anticyclonically towards the coast, while in August, under anomalous westerly winds, the plume turned east. Remote imagery of sea surface temperature and suspended sediments confirmed the direction of the plume. Optimally interpolated maps of surface salinity, temperature, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and transmissivity from underway sampling, and periodic nutrient samples, reveal the plume structure. In May concentrations of nitrate, silicate, and …

Moment Of Truth, Richard C. Reuben Aug 1997

Moment Of Truth, Richard C. Reuben

Faculty Publications

While the technical sophistication of today's polygraphs is far beyond the cathode-tube stuff of the 1920s, many lawyers and judges continue to view them as inherently unreliable and overly prejudicial. Their concern is that the procedure does not test whether a subject is telling the truth but measures physiological responses to questions- which may reveal much, but not necessarily the truth. But this fall, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider, in United States v. Scheffer, No. 96-1133, whether to finally lift the barrier to admissibility of polygraph evidence, at least in the federal courts, on grounds that it inhibits the …

Rude And Crude?: When Teens In Your Library Respond Negatively To You, Think Back To How You Approached Them, Anthony Bernier, D. T. Herald Aug 1997

Rude And Crude?: When Teens In Your Library Respond Negatively To You, Think Back To How You Approached Them, Anthony Bernier, D. T. Herald

Faculty Publications

Skaters, taggers, gang members, and other groups of young people are being identified all over America as problems for libraries. However, these teens respond negatively to librarians because of the way that they are approached and because they experience so much discrimination. If teen behavior needs to be changed, there needs to be a change in the way they are approached and an appeal toward their code of ethics.

Monetary Policy Preferences Of Individual Fomc Members: A Content Analysis Of The Memoranda Of Discussion, Henry W. Chappell Jr., Thomas M. Havrilesky, Rob Roy Mcgregor Aug 1997

Monetary Policy Preferences Of Individual Fomc Members: A Content Analysis Of The Memoranda Of Discussion, Henry W. Chappell Jr., Thomas M. Havrilesky, Rob Roy Mcgregor

Faculty Publications

The Memoranda of Discussion provide detailed records of Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting deliberations. Procedures are developed for coding the textual data in the Memoranda and assessing the reliability of those codings. The codings are then used in the estimation of parameters of individual FOMC members' reaction functions. Data from the 1970 to 1976 period are employed in the estimation. In the future, similar methods could be used to analyze newly released transcripts of FOMC meetings held after 1976.

Time Series Measurements Of Chlorophyll Fluorescence In The Oceanic Bottom Boundary Layer With A Multisensor Fiber-Optic Fluorometer, Eurico J. Dsa, Steven E. Lohrenz, Vernon L. Asper, Roy A. Walters Aug 1997

Time Series Measurements Of Chlorophyll Fluorescence In The Oceanic Bottom Boundary Layer With A Multisensor Fiber-Optic Fluorometer, Eurico J. Dsa, Steven E. Lohrenz, Vernon L. Asper, Roy A. Walters

Faculty Publications

An in situ multisensor fiber-optic fluorometer (MFF) has been developed to acquire long-term chlorophyll fluorescence measurements in the oceanic bottom boundary layer to characterize the finescale pigment structure at vertical spatial scales comparable to physical measurements. The eight fluorescence sensors of the MFF are composed of dual optical fibers of varying lengths (1.5-8 m), with the fiber ends oriented at 30 degrees to each other and enclosed by a small light baffle. Strobe excitation blue light is passed through one of each pair of optical fibers and stimulated chlorophyll fluorescence is carried back to a photomultiplier. Two sets of four …

Evolution And Nebulousness In Theories, Barry N. Markovsky Aug 1997

Evolution And Nebulousness In Theories, Barry N. Markovsky

Faculty Publications

Social scientists have a clear choice in how they may approach theory development. One path leads to "nebulous" theories that lack any real explanatory power. The other path capitalizes on evolutionary principles of variation and selection, vastly increasing the chances for explanatory success. I illustrate these ideas by reference to "artificial life" programs, and discuss the implications for theory construction in the social sciences.

Singular And Plural Non-Deterministic Parameters, Sigurd Meldal, M. A. Walicki Aug 1997

Singular And Plural Non-Deterministic Parameters, Sigurd Meldal, M. A. Walicki

Faculty Publications

The article defines algebraic semantics of singular (call-time-choice) and plural (run-time-choice) nondeterministic parameter passing and presents a specification language in which operations with both kinds of parameters can be defined simultaneously. Sound and complete calculi for both semantics are introduced. We study the relations between the two semantics and point out that axioms for operations with plural arguments may be considered as axiom schemata for operations with singular arguments.

A Unified Green's Function Analysis Of Complicated Dfb Lasers, Jim D. Freeze, Michael A. Jensen, Richard H. Selfridge Aug 1997

A Unified Green's Function Analysis Of Complicated Dfb Lasers, Jim D. Freeze, Michael A. Jensen, Richard H. Selfridge

Faculty Publications

An efficient full-wave analysis technique for one-dimensional optical domains, known as the recursive Green's function method (RGFM), is presented for evaluation of distributed feedback (DFB) laser cavities with arbitrary material profiles. The method first constructs the Green's function of an inhomogeneous domain and subsequently uses Green's theorem to determine the laser optical field, lasing wavelength, and threshold gain. The technique is applied to investigate the performance of three DFB laser structures: a chirped-grating configuration, a modulated stripe width design, and a reduced duty cycle complex-coupled device. These structures are evaluated in terms of their single-mode lasing behavior and the uniformity …

Places In The Heartland: Departure Jurisprudence After Koon, Frank O. Bowman Iii Jul 1997

Places In The Heartland: Departure Jurisprudence After Koon, Frank O. Bowman Iii

Faculty Publications

There are two things upon which I suspect most observers will agree following the decision in Koon v. United States. First, the United States Supreme Court wants district courts to have more discretion to depart from the otherwise applicable guideline range, and wants appellate courts to have less authority to overturn those discretionary judgments. Second, in light of the conflicting signals the Court gave by, on the one hand, declaring that the standard of appellate review for departure decisions is to be abuse of discretion,” and on the other hand, finding that two of the five factors relied upon by …

How Will Lawyering And Mediation Practices Transform Each Other?, John M. Lande Jul 1997

How Will Lawyering And Mediation Practices Transform Each Other?, John M. Lande

Faculty Publications

This article sketches out some aspects of both lawyering and mediation practice that may be affected by development of a litimediation culture. Part II examines the growth of the private market for mediation and an accompanying specialization of mediation practice. These changes seem likely to require mediators to develop market niches with identifiable characteristics of their mediation practices. Simultaneously, lawyers, as regular buyers of mediation services, will be expected to recognize and make decisions based on significant distinctions between mediation providers.

Hall Effect In The Mixed State Of Moderately Clean Superconductors, I. Vekhter, A. Houghton Jul 1997

Hall Effect In The Mixed State Of Moderately Clean Superconductors, I. Vekhter, A. Houghton

Faculty Publications

The Hall conductivity in the mixed state of a clean (l ≫ ξ0) type-II s-wave-superconductor is determined from a microscopic calculation within a quasiclassical approximation. We find that below the superconducting transition the contribution to the transverse conductivity due to dynamical fluctuations of the order parameter is compensated by the modification of the quasiparticle contribution. In this regime the nonlinear behaviour of the Hall angle is governed by the change in the effective quasiparticle scattering rate due to the reduction in the density of states at the Fermi level. The connection with experimental results is discussed.

Antisense Expression Of The Peptide Transport Gene Atptr2-B Delays Flowering And Arrests Seed Development In Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants, Wei Song, Serry Koh, Mihály Czakó, László Márton, Eliana Drenkard, Jeffrey M. Becker, Gary Stacey Jul 1997

Antisense Expression Of The Peptide Transport Gene Atptr2-B Delays Flowering And Arrests Seed Development In Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants, Wei Song, Serry Koh, Mihály Czakó, László Márton, Eliana Drenkard, Jeffrey M. Becker, Gary Stacey

Faculty Publications

Previously, we identified a peptide transport gene, AtPTRZ-B, from Arabidopsis thaliana that was constitutively expressed in all plant organs, suggesting an important physiological role in plant growth and development. To evaluate the function of this transporter, transgenic Arabidopsis plants were constructed expressing antisense or sense AtPTRZ-B. Genomic Southern analysis indicated that four independent antisense and three independent sense AtPTRZ-B transgenic lines were obtained, which was confirmed by analysis of the segregation of the kanamycin resistance gene carried on the T-DNA. RNA blot data showed that the endogenous AtPJRZ-B mRNA levels were significantly reduced in transgenic leaves and …

Finding Auditors Liable For Fraud: What The Jury Heard In The Phar Mor Case, David M. Cottrell, Steven M. Glover

Faculty Publications

The Phar Mor case involved a massive collusive fraud by management. Although there were no claims the auditors participated in the fraud, plaintiffs' attorneys were able to convince the jury that the firm was liable for fraud on the grounds it made representations recklessly with regard to GAAS and GAAP.
