The Coexistence Of Multiple Distribution Systems For Financial Services: The Case Of Property-Liability Insurance, Allen N. Berger, J. David Cummins, Mary A. Weiss
The Coexistence Of Multiple Distribution Systems For Financial Services: The Case Of Property-Liability Insurance, Allen N. Berger, J. David Cummins, Mary A. Weiss
Faculty Publications
Property-liability insurance is distributed through a direct-writer system, where agents represent one insurer, and an independent- agency system, where agents represent several insurers. Independent-agency insurers have higher costs than direct writers. The market- imperfections hypothesis attributes the coexistence of the two types of insurers to impediments to competition, while the product-quality hypothesis holds that independent-agency insurers provide higher-quality services. We measure cost efficiency and profit efficiency for property-liability insurers and find strong support for the product-quality hypothesis, implying that independent-agency insurers produce higher-quality outputs and are compensated by higher revenues.

The chemical engineering curriculum in the United States has trained generations of technical experts who have successfully optimized chemical processes and products once they entered the chemical industry. The U.S. chemical industry, however, has entered a critical stage in which it must be able to create new and differentiated value through technical innovations that arc essential for long-term survival. This innovation process will require new skills that go far beyond the traditional expertise for the optimization of tasks possessed by young chemical engineers. The innovators must be able to identify new opportunities, explore the boundaries of technology, evaluate critical issues, …

Major Features Of Glaciochemistry Over The Last 110,000 Years In The Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 Ice Core, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, Mark S. Twickler, Sallie I. Whitlow
Faculty Publications
Major chemical species (Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) and δ18O covering the last 110,000 years from the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) ice core were utilized in this study in order to reconstruct the soluble chemistry of the atmosphere over Greenland and interpret major climate events that have affected the region. During the Holocene the major chemical species and δ18O do not display any significant relationship. However, a strong inverse correlation was found between concentrations of the major chemical species and δ18O (a proxy for temperature) during the last glacial period, suggesting that in general during …

System For Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Measurements At High Pressure And Low Temperature, Ke Huang, Daniel L. Decker, H. Mark Nelson, J. Dean Barnett
Faculty Publications
Major improvements have been made on the sensitive high pressure electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) system developed previously in 1978 at this laboratory. These changes allow low temperature measurements and provide a more stable signal. The high pressure EPR cell is placed inside a vacuum chamber to provide thermal isolation, so that the system may be cooled by a closed cycle refrigerator to temperatures between 45 and 60 K, depending on the energy input to the modulation coil. The combination of high pressure and low temperature greatly expands the thermodynamic range over which EPR measurements can be made. An improved and …

Effect Of Naturally Occurring Bromophenols On Sulfate Reduction And Ammonia Oxidation In Intertidal Sediments, C. Giray, G. M. King
Faculty Publications
We examined the effect on ammonium oxidation and sulfate reduction of several brominated compounds [4-bromophenol, 2,4-dibromophenol (2,4-DBP), 2,6-dibromophenol and 2,4,6-tribromophenol] that occur naturally in enteropneusts. We compared rates of these processes with and without bromoorganics using bulk intertidal sediments and burrow wall sediments from 3 enteropneust species (2 containing 2,4-DBP and 1 containing 2,3,4-tribromopyrrole), a mollusc (Mya arenaria) and a polychaete (Nereis virens). Sulfate reduction in bulk sediment was unaffected by bromophenols at concentrations sediment, but was inhibited temporarily at 1 μmol cm-3. Sulfate reduction in burrow wall sediments differed from bulk sediments, but was not correlated with concentrations of …

A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e+p → e+X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F2 and the total virtual photon-proton (γ*p) cross-section is presented for 0.11 ≤ Q2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 and 2 × 10-6 ≤ x ≤ 6 × 10-5, corresponding to a range in the γ*p c.m. energy of 100 ≤ W ≤ 230 GeV. Comparisons with various models are also presented. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

This paper presents measurements of D*f± production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5GeV positrons and 820GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel D*+ → (D0 → K-π+)π+ (+c.c.) has been used in the study. The e+p cross section for inclusive D*± production with 5 < Q2 < 100GeV2 and y < 0.7 is 5.3±1.0±0.8nb in the kinematic region 1.3 < pT(D*±) < 9.0GeV and |η(D*±) | < 1.5. Differential cross sections as functions of pT(D*±), η(D*±), W and Q2 are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the full kinematic region in pT(D*±) and η(D*±), the charm contribution Fcc̄2(x,Q2) to the proton structure function is determined for Bjorken x between 2 · 10-4 and 5 · 10-3. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

We recall a summer of contentment when American law was suffused with optimism, a season ending a long winter of despair and disorder. For the first fifteen years of this century, many (and perhaps most) American lawyers were filled with confidence that America had healed the wounds of civil war and was healing those of class struggle. We could, and we would, overcome all obstacles to peace and prosperity, not only for our people but for all mankind. This, it was widely believed, would be our century. As early as 1879 Daniel Coit Gilman, the premier educator of his time, …

Later this year, the U.S. Supreme Court will take up an evidence dispute from Georgia that promises to be one of the new term's most important nuts-and-bolts cases for litigators. General Electric Co. v. Joiner, no. 96-188, is expected to determine the standard of review that federal appellate courts must give to lower court decisions on the admissibility of scientific evidence. The Court's decision in Joiner promises to have an important effect on a broad range of cases in which causation often is a pivotal issue.

Two new polymorphic Alu elements (HS2.25 and HS4.14) belonging to the young (Ya5/8) subfamily of human-specific Alu repeats have been identified. DNA sequence analysis of both Alu repeats revealed that each Alu repeat had a long 3'-oligo-dA-rich tail (41 and 52 nucleotides in length) and a low level of random mutations. HS2.25 and HS4.14 were flanked by short precise direct repeats of 8 and 14 nucleotides in length, respectively. HS2.25 was located on human chromosome 13, and HS4.14 on chromosome 1. Both Alu elements were absent from the orthologous positions within the genomes of non-human primates, and were highly polymorphic …

Interaction Between Calf Sex And Calf Genetic Type For Preweaning Traits Of Calves Varying In Percentage Brahman Breeding, F. A. Thrift, S. M. Clark, D. K. Aaron, D. E. Franke
Faculty Publications
Two data sets were utilized to evaluate interaction between calf sex and calf genetic type for preweaning performance of calves varying in percentage (0, 50, 100) Brahman breeding. Data set I involved birth weight, preweaning average daily gain, and weaning weight records on 3562 Angus (AA), Brahman ♂ × Angus ♀ (BA) and Brahman (BB) calves; data set II consisted of birth weight, preweaning average daily gain and weaning weight records on 3752 Hereford (HH), Brahman ♂ × Hereford ♀ (BH) and Brahman (BB) calves. For both data sets, the calf sex × calf genetic type interaction was significant (P<0.01) except for preweaning average daily gain in data set II. In all cases, the significant interactions were represented by a change in magnitude rather than a change in rank for the two sexes of each calf genetic type. These results indicate that sex differences are expected to be much greater for Brahman-sired BA and BH calves than for calves of 0% (AA or HH) or 100% (BB) Brahman breeding. These increased sex differences are of greatest importance for birth weight because of the relationship that exists between birth weight and calving difficulty.

Autopsy In The Cancer Patient: The Nurse's Role, Patricia Rushton
Faculty Publications
Nurses spend many hours with dying cancer patients, developing close relationships with both the patients and their families. However, nurses are frequently not involved in the process of requesting an autopsy, either by choice or tradition. During this time of great stress, the nurse can be more involved. The nurse who understands the reasons for autopsy and its ramification for the grieving process can be actively involved in supporting the physician who makes the request and the family members who must make the this difficult decision. It is possible that the nurse can be the health team member designated to …

Relationship Satisfaction: Impact And Consequences For Women's Emotional Health And Treatment, Carolyn I. Wright, Dean M. Busby
Faculty Publications
This study uses feminist theory to examine the variables of relationship length and relationship satisfaction as predicators of both self-esteem and emotional functioning for women. Using a national sample of data gathered from 1,257 female survey respondents this study found significant relationships between emotional functioning, self-esteem, and self-reported relationship satisfaction which was supported by regression testing and path analysis. In addition, a significant negative relationship was noted between a woman's self-esteem and her with-holding of verbalized displeasure or disagreement with her partner. Implications for women in therapy were discussed.

Local Refinement Of Three-Dimensional Finite Element Meshes, M. L. Staten, Norman L. Jones
Faculty Publications
Mesh refinement is an important tool for editing finite element meshes in order to increase the accuracy of the solution. Refinement is performed in an iterative procedure in which a solution is found, error estimates are calculated, and elements in regions of high error are refined. This process is repeated until the desired accuracy is obtained.
Much research has been done on mesh refinement. Research has been focused on two-dimensional meshes and three-dimensional tetrahedral meshes ([1] Ning et al. (1993) Finite Elements in Analysis and Design, 13, 299–318; [2] Rivara, M. (1991) …

In a continuing evaluation of the ERS-1 C-band scatterometer as a tool for studying polar sea ice, the authors evaluate the azimuthal modulation characteristics of Antarctic sea ice. ERS-1 AMI scatterometer mode data sets from several study regions dispersed in the Antarctic seasonal sea ice pack are evaluated for azimuthal modulation. When appropriate, the incidence angle dependence is estimated and removed in a study region before determining whether azimuthal modulation is present in the data. Other comparisons are made using the fore and aft beam measurement difference. The results show that over the ice pack, azimuthal modulation is less than …

Nephite Kingship Reconsidered, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
This paper extends and updates previous efforts to understand the political dynamic of the Book of Mormon by looking at four themes or issues that can be developed from the text itself. The first is an expansion of earlier treatments of the contradictory political ideologies of the Nephites and Lamanites, which informed relations between these two groups across their thousand-year history. The second is an exploration of the historical possibility that Nephi may never, in fact, have been anointed as king of the Nephite people, which raises in turn a possible need to reassess the character of Nephite kingship. The …

A Fluid In Contact With A Semipermeable Surface: Second-Order Integral Equation Approach, Douglas Henderson, Pawel Bryk, Stefan Sokolowski
Faculty Publications
An integral equation approach for a binary hard-sphere mixture interacting with a planar semipermeable wall (membrane) is formulated by using the second-order nonuniform or pair Ornstein–Zernike equation as well as the usual singlet Ornstein–Zernike equation. The results of the pair theory are compared with those obtained from the singlet theory and with computer simulation data. The pair approach is more accurate than the singlet theory.
