Predicting The Viscosity Of Alkanes Using Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics: Evaluation Of Intermolecular Potential Models, Richard L. Rowley, William Allen Jun 1997

Predicting The Viscosity Of Alkanes Using Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics: Evaluation Of Intermolecular Potential Models, Richard L. Rowley, William Allen

Faculty Publications

Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) viscosity simulations of branched and linear alkanes at liquid densities were performed using both united-atom (UA) and all-atom (AA) intermolecular potential models in order to study the relative efficacy of the models in predicting fluid viscosity. Both models were used in conjunction with fixed bond lengths and bond angles, but different torsional potentials were investigated. The commonly used Ryckaert—Bellemans intermolecular potential model, which accurately predicts viscosities for short straight-chain alkanes, produced values for branched and long-chain alkanes that were significantly below experimental values. Likewise, a more complex UA model that uses transferrable site potentials and is …

The Insider Story, Richard C. Reuben

The central issue in United States v. O'Hagan, No. 96-842, is the validity of the so-called "misappropriation theory" of insider trader liability under Section 10(b) of the Securities and Exchange Act of 1934. 15 US.C. 78(j)(b). The justices heard oral arguments in April. If the theory propounded by federal regulators is endorsed by the Court, it would expand insider trader liability under U.S. law.

Numerical Modeling Of Self-Propagating Polymerization Fronts: The Role Of Kinetics On Front Stability, Stanislav E. Solovyov, Victor M. Ilyashenko, John A. Pojman

Faculty Publications

Frontal propagation of a highly exothermic polymerization reaction in a liquid is studied with the goal of developing a mathematical model of the process. As a model case we consider monomers such as methacrylic acid and n-butyl acrylate with peroxide initiators, although the model is not limited to these reactants and can be applied to any system with the similar basic polymerization mechanism. A three-step reaction mechanism, including initiation, propagation and termination steps, as well as a more simple one-step mechanism, were considered. For the one-step mechanism the loss of stability of propagating front was observed as a sequence …

An Ontology Tool For Distributed Information Environments, Kuhanandha Mahalingam, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

This paper describes how ontologies can be used for query formulation and semantic reconciliation in large distributed information environments. It presents a tool, written in Java, that can be used to create and browse ontologies, and construct ontology-based queries. The tool incorporates several abstraction mechanisms that enable users to manage large ontologies, which are typical of large information environments. The tool is being applied to an information system for healthcare administrators, which spans hospitals, clinics, and governmental health departments.

A Body Without Organs: Three Approaches- Cage, Bach, And Messiaen, Christian T. Asplund Jun 1997

A Body Without Organs: Three Approaches- Cage, Bach, And Messiaen, Christian T. Asplund

Allow me to posit a traditional four-part division of the self into the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical/sensual. This may be further simplified to a two-part division, one being the spiritual and the other being a trio of the other selves which collectively may be termed the natural self. Sacred activity in this context would be an effort to achieve communion between the spiritual self and other spiritual entities. Such communion would be, in fact, the self's highest goal and, ultimately, the only one worth all its efforts. True communion with other beings is only possible on this spiritual level, …

Changes In Network Characteristics And Hiv Risk Behavior Among Injection Drug Users, John P. Hoffmann, S. Susan Su, Alfred Pach Jun 1997

Changes In Network Characteristics And Hiv Risk Behavior Among Injection Drug Users, John P. Hoffmann, S. Susan Su, Alfred Pach

Faculty Publications

Studies indicate that HIV risk behaviors vary greatly among injection drug users (IDUs). The source of such variation is often ascribed to individual differences, but much of it is due to how IDUs are grouped into social networks. Nevertheless, given the turbulent and uncertain lives led by many IDUs, it would not be surprising if their social networks changed substantially over time. We used data from a study of the social networks of IDUs in Chicago and Washington, DC, to examine changes in individual behavior and network characteristics over time. The results indicated few changes in standard network measures, such …

Inclusive photoproduction of D*± in ep collisions at HERA has been measured with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range 115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q2 < 4 GeV2. The cross section σ → D*X integrated over the kinematic region pDz.ast;⊥ > 3 GeV and -1.5 < ηD* < 1.0 is (10.6 ± 1.7(stat.) ± 1.61.3 (syst.)) nb. Differential cross sections as functions of pD*⊥, ηD* and W are given. The data are compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. For a calculation using a massive charm scheme the predicted cross sections are smaller than the measured ones. A recent calculation using a massless charm scheme is in agreement with the data. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Nepsilon-(Carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) is a stable chemical modification of proteins formed from both carbohydrates and lipids during autoxidation reactions. We hypothesized that carboxymethyl lipids such as (carboxymethyl)phosphatidylethanolamine (carboxymethyl-PE) would also be formed in these reactions, and we therefore developed a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry assay for quantification of carboxymethylethanolamine (CME) following hydrolysis of phospholipids. In vitro, CME was formed during glycation of dioleoyl-PE under air and from linoleoylpalmitoyl-PE, but not from dioleoyl-PE, in the absence of glucose. In vivo, CME was detected in lipid extracts of red blood cell membranes, approximately 0.14 mmol of CME/mol of ethanolamine, from control and diabetic subjects, …

Twin Hydroxymethyluracil-A Base Pair Steps Define The Binding Site For The Dna-Bending Protein Tf1, Anne Grove, Marxa L. Figueiredo, Aldo Galeone, Luciano Mayol, E. Peter Geiduschek

Faculty Publications

The DNA-bending protein TF1 is the Bacillus subtilis bacteriophage SPO1- encoded homolog of the bacterial HU proteins and the Escherichia coli integration host factor. We recently proposed that TF1, which binds with high affinity (K(d) was ~3 nM) to preferred sites within the hydroxymethyluracil (hmU)-containing phage genome, identifies its binding sites based on sequence-dependent DNA flexibility. Here, we show that two hmU-A base pair steps coinciding with two previously proposed sites of DNA distortion are critical for complex formation. The affinity of TF1 is reduced 10-fold when both of these hmU-A base pair steps are replaced with A-hmU, G-C, or …

Grand Canonical Monte Carlo And Modified Singlet Integral Equations For The Density Profile Of A Yukawa Fluid Near A Planar Wall, Douglas Henderson, Wilmer Olivares-Rivas, Leo Degreve, Jacqueline Quintana May 1997

Grand Canonical Monte Carlo And Modified Singlet Integral Equations For The Density Profile Of A Yukawa Fluid Near A Planar Wall, Douglas Henderson, Wilmer Olivares-Rivas, Leo Degreve, Jacqueline Quintana

Faculty Publications

Results for the density profile for Yukawa molecules near a hard wall and an exponential attractive wall are presented for Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, for the singlet hypernetted chain (HNC) integral equation and for a modified version of the Lovett–Mou–Buff–Wertheim (LMBW-1) which uses the exact contact value theorem. The results of the standard singlet HNC are quite poor. If the LMBW equation is modified (but still using the bulk direct correlation function) the results at high temperature become reasonable. However, the results at low temperatures, close to the bulk coexistence curve, are only a partial improvement. The contact …

Intraspecific And Diffuse Competition: The Response Of Nassella Pulchra In A California Grassland, Andrew R. Dyer, Kevin J. Rice

Faculty Publications

In inland California grasslands, the high densities of alien annual species have altered the growing environment for native perennial grasses. Using variable-density plots, we measured the influence of intraspecific competition (conspecifics only) and diffuse competition (mixed-composition neighborhoods that include conspecifics) on growth and survival of Nassella pulchra, purple needlegrass. We assessed the effects of intraspecific and diffuse competition in weeded plots and unweeded plots, respectively, across a density gradient of N. pulchra plants (16–356 plants/m2). We used summer fire and spring sheep grazing to reduce diffuse competition in unweeded plots. The potential effect of rooting volume on competitive interactions …

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue a landmark decision soon on the ability of government to slow down X-rated traffic on the information superhighway. At issue in Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union, No. 96-511, argued March 19, is the constitutionality of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, 47 U.S.C. § 223, a major effort by Congress to restrict minors' access to the pornography that is readily available on the Internet. Legal experts say the decision could set an important benchmark for future rulings affecting the electronic communications network that may reach some 200 million users before the …

The major advantages of nuclear emulsion for detecting charged particles are its submicron position resolution and sensitivity to minimum ionizing particles. These must be balanced, however, against the difficult manual microscope measurement by skilled observers required for the analysis. We have developed an automated system to acquire and analyze the microscope images from emulsion chambers. Each emulsion plate is analyzed independently, allowing coincidence techniques to be used in order to reject background and estimate error rates. The system has been used to analyze a sample of high-multiplicity Pb-Pb interactions (charged particle multiplicities ∼1100) produced by the 158 GeV/c per nucleon …

An insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of the angiotensin I converting enzyme gene influences the level of serum angiotensin converting enzyme activity and has been associated with risk of several cardiovascular conditions. The relationship to blood pressure remains uncertain, however. We conducted a population-based survey in Kingston, Jamaica, to examine the association between angiotensin converting enzyme genotype, angiotensin converting enzyme serum activity and blood pressure. Serum angiotensin converting enzyme activity was measured and genotyping performed for the I/D polymorphism in 500 community residents. The overall prevalence of the D allele was 59.3%. Angiotensin converting enzyme genotype was not significantly related to blood …

The Probability Density Function Of Ocean Surface Slopes And Its Effects On Radar Backscatter, Y. Liu, Xh Yan, W.T. Liu, P.A. Hwang

Faculty Publications

Based on Longuet-Higgins's theory of the probability distribution of wave amplitude and wave period and on some observations, a new probability density function (PDF) of ocean surface slopes is derived. It is f(zeta(x), zeta(y)) = n/2 pi(n - 1)sigma(u) sigma(c) x [1 + zeta(x)(2)/(n - 1)sigma(n)(2) + zeta(y)(2)/(n - 1)sigma(c)(2)](-(n + 2)/2) + skewness, where zeta(x) and zeta(y) are the slope components in upwind and crosswind directions, respectively; sigma(u)(2) and sigma(c)(2) are the corresponding mean-square slopes. The peakedness of slopes is generated by nonlinear wave-wave interactions in the range of gravity waves. The skewness of slopes is generated by nonlinear …

On-Line Cartesian Trajectory Control Of Mechanisms Along Complex Curves, Edward Red, Zhaoxue Yang May 1997

On-Line Cartesian Trajectory Control Of Mechanisms Along Complex Curves, Edward Red, Zhaoxue Yang

Faculty Publications

New methods have been developed to control a mechanism's realtime Cartesian motion along spatially complex curves such as Non-Uniform Rational B-splines (NURBS). The methods dynamically map the critical trajectory parameters between parameter space, Cartesian space, and joint space. Trajectory models that relate Cartesian tool speeds and accelerations to joint speeds and accelerations have been generalized so that they can be applied to most classes of robots and CNC mechanisms.

Secondary Dark Rings Of Internal Conical Refraction, Karl F. Warnick, David V. Arnold May 1997

Secondary Dark Rings Of Internal Conical Refraction, Karl F. Warnick, David V. Arnold

Faculty Publications

This paper treats the phenomenon of internal conical refraction, in which a narrow beam propagating along an optical axis of a biaxial anisotropic medium spreads into a hollow cone. An expression is obtained for the intensity distribution produced by conical refraction that predicts additional fringes concentric to the well known Poggendorf dark ring for certain propagation distances and beam widths.

Intrinsic Decoherence In Mesoscopic Systems, P. Mohanty, E. M.Q. Jariwala, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

We present measurements of the phase coherence time τφ in six quasi-1D Au wires and clearly show that τφ is temperature independent at low temperatures. We suggest that zero-point fluctuations of the phase coherent electrons are responsible for the observed saturation of τφ. We introduce a new functional form for the temperature dependence and present the results of a calculation for the saturation value of τφ. This explains the observed temperature dependence of our samples as well as many 1D and 2D systems reported to date.

Post-Uruguay Round Gatt/Wto Dispute Settlement: Substance, Strengths, Weaknesses, And Causes For Concern, Michael Tkacik Apr 1997

Post-Uruguay Round Gatt/Wto Dispute Settlement: Substance, Strengths, Weaknesses, And Causes For Concern, Michael Tkacik

Faculty Publications

Dispute settlement under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (“GATT”) has come under increasing strain in recent years. The major powers often ignore GATT dispute settlement decisions which do not comport with their economic interests. This situation undermines the credibility of the GATT and threatens the system's framework. If dispute settlement under the GATT continues to be ineffective as it has been through much of the 1980s and early 1990s, GATT member states (“Members”) may well lose faith in the system, begin reimposing the tariffs that were present before the GATT, thereby risking worldwide trade war and possibly consequences …

Amid the continuing national debate over deficit reduction, a case before the U.S. Supreme Court has multibillion-dollar ramifications in fraud recoveries for the federal government. At issue in Hughes Aircraft Co. v. United States ex rel. Schumer, No. 95-1340, is the reach of the U.S. False Claims Act, 31 U.S.C. § 3729, et seq., which permits private parties to bring whistleblower lawsuits - also called "qui tam" actions - against companies that allegedly are defrauding the government. But they can only bring such actions if the information they present about alleged fraud has not already been "publicly disclosed." The lower …

Ill-Posedness Of A Double-Null Free-Evolution Scheme For Black Hole Spacetimes, Carsten Gundlach, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We suggest that 'free-evolution' integration schemes for the Einstein equations (that do not enforce constraints) may contain exponentially growing modes that render them useless in numerical integrations of black hole spacetimes, independently of how the equations are differenced. As an example we consider the evolution of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spacetimes in double-null coordinates.

Conformation Of Interacting Polymer Chains: Effects Of Temperature, Bias, Polymer Concentration, And Porosity, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

The conformations of interacting polymer chains driven by a biased field in heterogeneous media are studied using Monte Carlo simulations in three dimensions. In addition to excluded volume, a nearest-neighbor interaction is considered with polymer-polymer repulsion and polymer-solvent attraction. Two types of heterogeneous media are considered: (i) a homogeneous-annealed system consisting of mobile polymer chains and solvents and (ii) quenched porous media, generated by adding a random distribution of quenched barriers. Effects of polymer concentration (p), bias (B), temperature (T), and porosity (ps) on the magnitude of the radius of gyration (Rg) of the …
