A Natural Fit For The Natural State: The Emergence Of Black Power Organizations In Arkansas From 1968-1975, Maurice D. Gipson
A Natural Fit For The Natural State: The Emergence Of Black Power Organizations In Arkansas From 1968-1975, Maurice D. Gipson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study seeks to explore how Black Arkansans on college campuses in rural towns navigated their local circumstances while embracing tenets of Black Power. By 1968, public PWIs in Arkansas were contending with an influx of Black students due to the gains of the Civil Rights Movement. Even though many of the universities had been integrated years and even decades earlier, they were still ill-equipped for the number of Black students that would enroll and descend upon the towns during this period.
Forecasting Geotechnical Parameters From Electrical Resistivity And Seismic Wave Velocities Using Artificial Neural Network Models, Fatema Tuz Johora
Forecasting Geotechnical Parameters From Electrical Resistivity And Seismic Wave Velocities Using Artificial Neural Network Models, Fatema Tuz Johora
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Geotechnical measurements of soil parameters used in the design of infrastructure provide information at a specific point of the ground. The use of limited point data may result in greater uncertainty and less reliability in design. Geophysical methods are non-invasive, less time-consuming, and provide continuous spatial information about the soil. However, geophysical information is not in terms of engineering parameters. Correlations between geotechnical parameters and geophysical parameters are needed to facilitate the use of geophysical information in geotechnical designs. The current research is focused on two geophysical methods; electrical resistivity (ER) and seismic wave velocity (S-wave and P-wave). Artificial neural …
Development Of Bio-Based Nanocomposites For Biosensor And Indicator Applications In Smart Food Packaging, Abdus Sobhan
Development Of Bio-Based Nanocomposites For Biosensor And Indicator Applications In Smart Food Packaging, Abdus Sobhan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Smart food packaging based on biosensors has been attracting more and more interest to the industrial community because of the concerns of food quality and safety. A food packaging with biosensor has a scope to enable real-time monitoring of microbial breakdown products of packaged foods. Furthermore, one of the biggest challenges in implementing biosensor for smart packaging materials is the development of bio-sensing active materials that can leverage their electrical, thermal, biodegradable and other functional properties. In this regard, nanocellulose-based activated carbon (NAC) nanocomposite was developed using the activated carbon and nanocellulose gel using the casting method with their different …
Profiling Of Fda-Approved And Clinical Trial Drugs Revealed Shared Cytotoxicity And Collateral Sensitivity In Resistant (H69ar) And Non-Resistant (H69) Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells. (Drug Repurposing In Cancer Chemotherapy), Pius Reyderg Agyemang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Some cancers are capable of “spitting out” drugs being fed to them, metaphorically speaking, becoming resistant to what were previously effective chemotherapeutics. In small-cell lung cancer (SCLC), an overexpression of a membrane protein (MRP1) and its transport activity can lead to chemotherapy failure. However, this study showed that certain drugs are selectively cytotoxic (exhibit collateral sensitivity) to MRP1-overexpressed SCLC (H69AR) cells. In this study, three drugs (Erlotinib, Pyrimethamine, Fludarabine) were identified to exhibit a dose-dependent collateral sensitivity on H69AR with IC50 values of ~3.5 μM, ~2 μM, and ~20 μM respectively. Halting the transport activity of the MRP1 with 25 …

Detailing The Connection Between A Family Of Polar Graphs And Tremain Equiangular Tight Frames, Nicholas Brown
Detailing The Connection Between A Family Of Polar Graphs And Tremain Equiangular Tight Frames, Nicholas Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between strongly regular graphs and equiangular tight frames has been known for several years, and this relationship has been used to construct many of the most recent examples of new strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we present an explicit construction of a family of equiangular tight frames using the geometry of a quadratic space over the field of four elements. We observe that these frames give rise to a strongly regular graph on a subset of points of a quadratic space over the field with 4 elements. We then demonstrate an isomorphism between this graph and a …
Free-Living Diazotrophs And The Nitrogen Cycle In Natural Grassland Revealed By Culture Dependent And Independent Approaches, Amrit Koirala
Free-Living Diazotrophs And The Nitrogen Cycle In Natural Grassland Revealed By Culture Dependent And Independent Approaches, Amrit Koirala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biological nitrogen fixation contributes to half of the global supply of nitrogen to the biosphere. It is carried out by a diverse group of prokaryotes called diazotrophs via the nitrogenase enzyme. Nitrogen fixation research is focused on the narrow group of symbiotic diazotrophs, and the vast majority of free-living diazotrophs which contribute significantly to fixed nitrogen are yet to be explored. The goal of this research was to access phylogeny of diazotrophs considering the most up-to-date genomic information and apply that knowledge to understand the diversity of free-living diazotrophs in a natural grassland ecosystem, both by culture dependent and independent …
Development Of Efficient Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells With Composition And Interface Engineering, Khan Mamun Reza
Development Of Efficient Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells With Composition And Interface Engineering, Khan Mamun Reza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Metal halide perovskites are considered the most promising solar energy technology because of their distinct properties, such as defect tolerance, low cost, easy fabrication due to solution-processibility, band tunability, etc. Due to these properties, the efficiency of perovskite solar cells reaches more than 25% and approaches the limit of singlejunction within last few years. To increase the efficiency further in a more cost-effective way, double junction tandem solar cells with an efficient ‘top’ wide-bandgap cell is desired. But wide-bandgap perovskites still face some critical issues, such as poor morphology, smaller grain size, the formation of excessive lead halides, light-induced halide …

Veracious Verdicts: An Expansion Of Cognitive-Experiential Self-Theory In Jury Decision-Making Using Attribution Theory, Jade E. Larson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a pillar in our judicial system, the courts utilize almost ten million citizens each year for jury service. As a result, the courts are faced with issues of inconsistency and unpredictability. This study aims to examine some factors that significantly influence jury decision-making by investigating cognitive experiential self-theory (CEST) as a jury decision-making model, unified with attribution theory to better predict verdict outcomes. An online survey was distributed to 121 participants. The respondents were asked to read a civil trial case presentation; they were then randomly divided into two conditions (high and low unrelated detail eyewitness testimony). The testimonies …
Effects Of Harvest Regulations And Post-Release Hooking Mortality On Walleye Populations In South Dakota, Cade Lyon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Harvest regulations are commonly implemented to manipulate fisheries stocks. By regulating the size and number of fish that are harvested by anglers, managers are able to meet the goals and needs of regions. However, these management actions come with the potential for negative consequences. Overexploitation due to less restrictive harvest regulations can cause collapses in fisheries populations. In addition, indirect consequences such as hooking mortality brought on by length-based regulations can also be detrimental to populations. In this study, I investigated the effects of various harvest regulations on Walleye populations in three western South Dakota irrigation reservoirs: Angostura, Belle Fourche, …

The Plight Of Valinor: A Historically Informed Perspective On The Future Development Of Space Law And Potential Exercise Of Self-Determination By Human Settlements On Mars, Marshall David Mckellar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Breathable air, water, food, shelter, sleep: these are the five basic requirements for human survival. Providing these basics to a single person living on Earth is a challenge; providing them to 1,200 people living in the harsh Martian environment is a different matter entirely. Nonetheless, in 2047, SpaceX successfully constructed Valinor—the first human inhabited scientific settlement on Mars—by transporting hundreds of scientists and engineers, along with countless scientific experiments and technologically advanced survival equipment, to the red planet. Each year saw more successful missions to Valinor and the world community grew more excited about the reali-zation of humanity’s expansion into …
Effects Of Acute Exercise Intensity On Source Episodic Memory: Considerations By Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Brandon Thomas Rigdon
Effects Of Acute Exercise Intensity On Source Episodic Memory: Considerations By Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Brandon Thomas Rigdon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prior research suggests that behavioral (e.g., acute exercise) and psychological factors (e.g., metamemory; monitoring and control of one’s memory processes) may influence memory function. However, there is conflicting results on the optimal intensity of acute exercise to enhance memory and whether acute exercise can also enhance metamemory. Further, very limited research has evaluated whether acute exercise can influence source episodic memory. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate whether there is an intensity-specific effect of acute aerobic exercise on source episodic memory and metamemory accuracy. A secondary objective was to evaluate if cardiorespiratory fitness moderates this potential relationship. …
The Relationship Between Head Coaching Change And Donations To Intercollegiate Athletic Departments, Michael Paulus
The Relationship Between Head Coaching Change And Donations To Intercollegiate Athletic Departments, Michael Paulus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Intercollegiate athletic departments encounter unique challenges as organizational units of higher education. Among these challenges is generating revenue to support the rising expenses of operating programs, funding coaches’ salaries, and investing in facilities. Many athletics departments generate revenue by fundraising through donor-based seating programs, philanthropic engagement, and stewardship benefits associated with levels of support. While various factors within an athletics organization can influence fundraising, the important position of head coaches is one of them. These visible positions can play a key role in influencing ticket sales, fan interest, and donations, thereby contributing to the financial viability of the entire organization. This …

Pharmacological Manipulation Of Nmda Receptor Activation And Synaptic Norepinephrine Levels: Effects On Sustained Attention In Male Rats, Zach V. Redding
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Impaired attention is common in many neurological disorders. Normal attention promotes the selective processing of important sensory information. This selective processing relies on neurotransmitters, like glutamate, and neuromodulators, like norepinephrine, acting in frontal, parietal, and visual cortices. We tested treatments targeting the glutamatergic and noradrenergic systems using a rat model of attentional lapses.Rats were trained to respond quickly to stimuli in a two-choice reaction time task (2CRTT). Response times were split into initiation time (IT) and movement time (MT). Performance measures were derived from IT and MT distributions. IT mode represents sensorimotor processing speed when rats are attentive. IT deviation …

Three Essays Exploring Diversification Strategies In Family Firms: Evidence From The S&P 1500 On Acquisitions And Exits., Chelsea Sherlock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Family firms are not only the most prevalent form of business organization in the world, accounting for roughly 75% of all organizations (La Porta, Lopez-de-Silanes, & Shleifer, 1999; Miller, Steier, & Le Breton-Miller, 2003), they also represent “heterogeneous and complex enterprises” that offer a “challenging array of issues to study” (Sharma, Chrisman, & Gersick, 2012, p. 5). Accordingly, this series of essays explores diversification strategies in family firms by investigating the family specific factors which may influence strategic decision-making. I begin with a review of the diversification literature over the last 20 years. Next, using data from S&P 1500 firms, …
African American College Students First Experiences In Counseling, Melissa Denise Spencer
African American College Students First Experiences In Counseling, Melissa Denise Spencer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
African Americans have experienced mistreatment at the hands of the medical community. Knowledge of the Tuskegee Experiment and the travesties done by J. Marion Sims to slave women have been passed down through the generations causing cultural skepticism of the medical field, subsequently hindering African Americans from seeking medical services. This historical legacy of maltreatment has caused African Americans to seek medical help at a lower rate than their majority counterparts. African American college students seek out mental health services at a much lower rate than White students while experiencing mental health symptoms at the same or sometimes higher rate. …
From Goethe To Godel: Against The Language Of Thought Hypothesis, Berit Turnquist
From Goethe To Godel: Against The Language Of Thought Hypothesis, Berit Turnquist
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper re-examines the language of thought hypothesis by considering objections raised by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe against influential views about the relation of language and thought in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, such as those posited by Herder, Schleiermacher, Schlegel, and von Humboldt. Goethe’s Theory of Colors contains an instructive critique of the idea held by many of his contemporaries: that the bounds and limits of thought are linguistic in character. I argue that Goethe’s remarks anticipate later 20th-century challenges to the language of thought hypothesis regarding implicit cognition, such as Dennett’s “chess playing” example, as well …
Absurdity Is A Distinct Aesthetic Category, Sarah Jean Szopinski
Absurdity Is A Distinct Aesthetic Category, Sarah Jean Szopinski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Absurdity is the sudden discomfort caused by direct awareness of your being consciousand your relation to reality. Camus’ absurdist philosophy refers to the conflict between the human desire for inherent meaning in reality and the incomprehensible and irrational nature of the universe. Facing absurdity requires confronting the absurd feeling through introspective awareness of this tension. Otherwise, you are overcome by it, succumbing to a lack of mindfulness and avoidance of the confrontation. Absurdity, especially in its aesthetic dimension, has not received the sustained attention it deserves. In this paper, I argue that due to the sustained relevance of the absurd …
Elementary School Counselors' Experiences Working With Children Who Self-Harm, Maegan Tatum
Elementary School Counselors' Experiences Working With Children Who Self-Harm, Maegan Tatum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Elementary-aged children struggle with low self-esteem, are often impulsive, and struggle to develop appropriate coping skills. As such, many children have begun to experiment with self-harm. Because children spend a great deal of time in school, school counselors are often the first to know that a student has self-harmed. Although school counselors have extensive experience working with students who self-harm, most school counselors indicate a need for more training and implementation of school district policies regarding self-harm. Additionally, current literature focuses on the experiences of middle and high school counselors because self-harm and NSSI are primarily noted in adolescents. In …

The Perception And Strategies Of Building Rapport With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Via Telepractice, Anna Cathryn Wall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Telepractice is a growing method in providing services in the profession of Speech-Language Pathology. One question with this growing method is, how do we build rapport when using telepractice? In this study, we intended to find what pediatric SLPs' perceptions and strategies of building rapport via telepractice is with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ages 5-12, and children’s age was considered as an influential factor. While previous studies have focused on perceptions, we wanted to know what SLPs are doing in order to build rapport with their clients when using telepractice. We reached out to 223 SLPs and there …
A Novel Approach Toward High Accuracy Indoor Localization}{Masters Of Science, Yunshu Wang
A Novel Approach Toward High Accuracy Indoor Localization}{Masters Of Science, Yunshu Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a novel approach towards high accuracy indoor localization with smartphones. Better than all the existing indoor localization methods, our approach has the advantage of being infrastructural-free, robust, and it does not require any pre-installation in a new environment. To make this goal come true, we built a testbed that only uses the Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) of the smartphones to access the smartphones' raw acceleration and orientation data, then use these data to calculate the user's location by coordinate transformation and interactions. We conducted extensive experiments and evaluations for testbed validation as well as to carefully examine …

The Impact Of Market Fragmentation On Stock Exchange Events And Thinly Traded Securities, Donovan Woods
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Part 1, I analyze independent technological malfunctions that forced trading halts at various equity exchanges over the past decade. During each halt, all other exchanges remained open. The primary purpose of this study is to examine intraday trading activity before, during, and after a technological malfunction, which are events that are neither driven by an informational event nor an order imbalance. Of the events I record in this study (8 technological malfunctions), a majority document a reduction in liquidity and an increase in short term volatility during and immediately after a technological malfunction. Furthermore, these affects appear to be …

Computational Modeling Of Non-Active Functional States Of The Cannabinoid Receptor 1 And Its Ligands, Ayooluwa Olufunmi Aderibigbe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) is a class A G-protein coupled receptor that is implicated in a variety of physiological processes, such as energy homeostasis, appetite regulation, cognition and motor control, and mood regulation. CB1 is widely distributed throughout the body, but is mainly expressed in the brain. Molecules that reduce CB1 signaling exhibit anti-obesity properties due to their effect in reducing appetite and body weight gain. However, the consequence of reducing CB1 signaling in the CNS includes adverse neuropsychiatric effects such as depression and suicidal ideation. Two methods of scientific interest for developing CB1 antagonists as anti-obesity drugs are …

Illiberal Influences: Extreme Right-Wing Support And Its Consequences, Jeff Borland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies the recent rise of extreme right-wing parties in the European context and explores their origins of support and consequences of their presence. This project follows the three-paper method, studying the movement from three distinct perspectives: immigration, globalization, and party influence. Using a variety of data, I employ hierarchical modeling to test hypotheses concerning these three areas in which extreme parties have an impact. My hypotheses focus on the relationship changes in the local population and economic conditions have on the support these parties receive, and how these parties modify the behavior of other right-wing parties. My results …

Stratigraphy And Geochemistry Of Paleocene-Aged Bauxites From North Mississippi, Timothy Brendan Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bauxite is a heavily-mined aluminum ore that forms through the relative depletion of silica to aluminum. In North Mississippi, bauxite occurring within the Upper Midway and Lower Wilcox groups has been the subject of study for over a century. Despite the abundance and duration of research, controversy surrounds the subjects of bauxite genesis and economic value. The last detailed study of North Mississippi bauxite was in the 1980’s, so the goal of this project is to apply newly available technologies and modern hypotheses on bauxite formation to refine and obtain new data. Fieldwork observations yielded pisoliths, horizonation, and possible rhizoliths, …
