The economic history of the United States is replete with examples of adjustment and readjustment by firms and industries. Such adjustments are usually made necessary by changes in the economic environment, and failure to adjust rather quickly and completely to such changes can mean economic disaster for entrepreneurs within an industry, and can result in insufficiencies in the total economic system. This study dealt with recreation and its association with juvenile delinquency. It is well known that the function of recreation is not to curb juvenile delinquency, but its effects of prevention cannot be overlooked. Recreation may well be a modern tool for rehabilitation aspects as well as a preventive measure for juvenile delinquency. The author felt that one of the greatest faults of recreation, which could very well show the lack of maturity of the profession, is the neglected segment of our society to whom the role could be most vital. There are 2.5 million acres classified as pasture land in the North James valley area of South Dakota. The area includes all or parts of the counties of Beadle, Brown, Edmonds, Faulk, Hand, Jerauld, McPherson, Sanborn and Spink. The Conservation Needs Study conducted in 1958 and 1959 by these respective counties’ USDA Agencies determined that about 1.6 million acres are in need of some treatment. These needs are classified as follows: (1) Acres needing establishment or reestablishment of vegetation (151,870 acres), (2) Improved cover (302,000 acres), (3) Protection from overgrazing (1,180,300 acres). The basic mechanics of the printing operation are the controlled transferring of ink to paper. It seems obvious, therefore, that performing this operation at peak efficiency is essential to competitive success. In letterpress printing this basic mechanical operation takes place in three steps: one, breaking the ink down into a thin, even film, two, depositing the ink film on the raised surface from which the print is to be made; and three, transferring the ink from the raised surface to the paper or substance being printed upon. During the last 25 years, several experiments have been conducted to study the amount of vitamin A and carotene needed by cattle. More emphasis has been devoted to carotene since cattle rations contain varying amounts of this precursor of vitamin A. Increasing market demands for lightweight cattle have brought about changes in methods of feeding. Cattle are being fattened rapidly at young ages using rations which contain a large amount of concentrates. Such rations are often low in carotene and need vitamin A or carotene supplementation. What will the optimum farm organizations yield in terms of net income to the farmer? The purpose of this study was to answer this question for the selected farm sizes. The question was answered through the use of linear programming. The selected farm sizes were 640, 1280, and 2560 acre dryland farms and 560, 1080, and 2240 acre partially irrigated farms. The supply of labor available was 240 man hours per month and 2500 total man hours per year from the farm operator and his family and also whatever more could be profitably hired. This study was designed to investigate the effect of cyclic moisture changes on the strength of three member nailed wood joints. The construction material used consisted of Douglas fir construction grade 2-inch by 4-inch main members and splice plates of 3/8-inch and 5/8-inch exterior Douglas fir plywood. Nails were placed in single shear and double shear with the two sizes of splice plates. Nail sizes were 6d bright common, 8d bright common, and 8d bright ring shank. Specimens with various combinations of splice plate thickness and nail sizes were constructed with single shear and double shear being considered. The specimens …

Identification Of Dimethyl Selenide As A Respiratory Product From Organisms Administered Selenium Compounds, James Donald Froom

Dimethyl selenide mercuric chloride complex was prepared and characterized. Dimethyl selenide as released from this complex was gas chromatographed as a reference standard in the identification of dimethyl selenide respired from organisms administered selenium compounds. Gas chromatographic evidence in which the retention time of the reference standard was compared with the unknown indicated that selenium compounds are metabolized by organisms with the elimination of dimethyl selenide as an end product of respiration. Rats administered sodium selenite intraperitoneally respired an odorous gas which was shown to be dimethyl selenide. Aspergillus mold administered sodium selenite yielded a volatile product which appeared as …

Greater production and efficiency of management in the livestock industry has increased the need for artificial breeding of farm animals. The solution to the development of artificial insemination in any species depends greatly on being able to preserve the semen for several days with minimum loss in fertilizing capacity. Synchronization of estrus could make swine artificial insemination practical and economical. Four separate experiments were conducted with a total of 176 gilts in an attempt to synchronize estrus and conception in gilts by use of exogenous hormones. The purpose of this paper is to trace the exarch primary xylem of the root, through the successive steps, to the endarch condition of the shot, and to trace also the shift from radially arranged bundles of the root to collaterally arranged bundles in the shoot for Ranunculus septentrionalis Poir., the swamp buttercup. The plants of the swamp buttercup were grown in a greenhouse. The seedlings used for sectioning were approximately 9.6 millimeters in length from the root tip to the shoot tip. This paper examines and obtains the bonding levels for the two octahedral structures Ta6Cl12+2 and Mo6Cl8+4. Some similarity is expected between these two. This similarity is evident when we compare total bonding strengths. To evaluate the total bonding strengths, the researcher neglects interactions between different orbitals as an approximation. This approximation is valid since the downward shift of the Flu levels is the same for both structures and the shift downward of the F2u level in Mo6Cl8+4 is similar in magnitude of the shift of the F2g level in Ta6Cl12+2.

An experiment consisting of three separate trials was conducted to determine the effect of adding erythromycin thiocyanate at various levels to growing-finishing swine rations. The study was concerned with the effect of the antibiotic on feed palatability, feed consumption, rate of gain, feed efficiency, and fecal bacteria when added to various rations fed to growing-finishing swine. It was concluded that erythromycin stimulated gains and improved feed efficiency when added to protein supplements at 25 grams per ton even though it decreased the acceptability of the supplement initially. Previous instigations of common ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, variety elatior L., have revealed several interesting aspects. The primary objectives of this research were to determine the location within the common ragweed, solubility characteristics, a method of purification, and the effects of the inhibitor on other biological organisms. Secondary objectives dealt with the dormancy of ragweed seeds and the effects of photoperiod upon ragweed plants. The purpose of this study was to determine the quantity of organic acids present in silage. To be sure that the methods of analysis were correct, two different procedures were used: column and gas-liquid chromatographic analysis. To determine the actual quantities of the organic acids, 36 samples from various containers were used. The containers used were concrete silos, 55 gallon barrels, and also some samples were analyzed which were ensile din pint, quart, and one-half gallon jars. It was found that there is no real definite amount of organic acid produced in different silage fermentations.

As a means of developing a more quantitative approach to the study of soil morphology, quantitative standards for the consistent observation and characterization of the morphologic features were developed. Raphanus sativus L., the radish, as other Cruciferae, has a high tolerance to ionizing radiation. The assumption was made that ascorbic acid levels in the growing plant may in part determine the plant’s radiosensitivity. The first objective of this investigation were to determine the effects of ionizing radiation on the radish plant in comparison to other plants and the levels of irradiation at which these effects were manifest.
