By nature, the ruminant animal was designed to be primarily a forage consuming animal. Under usual conditions, a large percentage of the nutrients consumed by ruminants are furnished by high-fiber feeds. The ruminant animal is relatively inefficient in the conversion of food nutrients into body tissues. Not only is the ruminant relatively inefficient in feed conversion, it is also more prone to digestive disturbances when high concentrate rations are fed. Improvement in the animal must come from effective selection and/or breeding of more efficient animals or from alteration of the physiological processes governing the animal’ metabolism which will promote increased …

A Survey Of The Extent Of Adult Homemaking Education In Vocationally Approved High Schools In South Dakota With Implications For Possible Expansion, Marlene Olson Westby

The purpose of this study was to learn the extent of adult homemaking education in vocationally approved high schools in South Dakota and to investigate opinions concerning possibilities for increasing the adult homemaking program. Analysis of the data from the returned questionnaires revealed that, while homemaking education for adults is available as a part of the vocational program in some high schools in South Dakota, in the majority of high schools, it is found to be entirely lacking. Of the 109 vocationally approved high schools investigated, 13 offered adult homemaking classes at some time during the three-year period. The majority, …

This study was conducted to determine if taillessness has any effect on production characters in the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment station’s No-Tail sheep flock. Taillessness in this flock is derived from six Siberian fat-rumped sheep brought to South Dakota in 1913. These sheep did not have a tail but had a large gob of fat on either side of the rump. They were crossed with common United States breeds to develop a breed of sheep with good mutton and wool qualities as well as being tailless. The purpose of this work was the characterization of a portion of the carbohydrate material extracted from onions. The portion under study is the third band on a paper chromatogram counting upward from sucrose as band one when the chromatogram is developed with n-butyl alcohol: water (7:1:2, v/v). This band is non-reducing carbohydrate material which yields on acid hydrolysis only fructose and glucose in a 2:1 ratio. Neo- and 1-kestose were isolated from mature onions of the Yellow-Globe Danvers variety. The purpose of this study was to provide South Dakota Dairy producers and others interested in establishing large scale dairy operations with a more complete set of guide lines that will help them to determine the profitableness of expanding existing or establishing new dairy producing units. Comparing theoretical and laboratory model discharge rating curves for a small discharge structure is relatively easy, but obtaining reliable field data on the prototype for additional comparison sometimes presents formidable problems. Generally, the construction and testing of a model and a corresponding prototype to obtain comparisons is not economically feasible. In this particular case, the reverse order of development was employed, and a model was constructed of an existing field structure. The effect on nitrogen fixation of additions of washings and the dialysate derived from the Aerobacter aerogenes culture fixing nitrogen has been studied. The effects on nitrogen fixation of limited supplements of casein hydrolysate and ammonium acetate as sole sources of nitrogen and in combination have been compared. Data has been presented to show that addition of washings or the dialysate to the growth medium stimulates nitrogen fixation. Similarly, in the presence of casein hydrolysate, the starved and the nonstarved cells fixed nitrogen much earlier than the control cultures with no supplements of exogenous nitrogen. The behavior of electrons in molecules is governed by quantum mechanical laws – insofar as we can tell. A quantitative check has proved impossible for all except the simplest systems, such as the H2+ and H2 molecules. Generally, severe approximations have to be made. The procedure that is supported by spectral measurements is the molecular orbital method. Soil scientists have recognized that there are differences in crop adaptability and yields of crops and range grasses among the well-drained clay soils developed from Pierre shale in the Chestnut region of western South Dakota. It is difficult, however, to measure quantitative differences in soil characteristics among these soils which are unlike agronomically. As a result the Pierre soil series which includes well-drained clay soils developed from clay residuum over bedded shale is mapped over the entire area. No previous literature was found pertaining to the economic damage to crops by the weevil, Sitona scissifrons Say. Dr. Robert J. Walstrom of the Entomology-Zoology Department at South Dakota State College found heavy damage on roots of alfalfa in artificially infested cages which was believed to have been caused by this weevil. Field observations had revealed that many alfalfa as well as clover roots lacked nitrogen nodules. The S. scissifrons species alone or in combination with other root feeding insects was suspected of affecting the productivity and longevity of alfalfa plants in South Dakota. The pari-mutuel racing industry in South Dakota adds employment, income, and tax revenue to the state’s general economy. The tax is paid largely by non-residents, and the tax revenue depends almost entirely on the amount of wagering. The pari-mutuel tax thus agrees with Adam Smith’s third canon of taxation which deals with convenience of payment. In order to obtain the effects of color harmonies and color contrasts, a designed frequently places one color next to another color, with two colored areas sharing a common border. As a result, these soils are recognized as “problem soils” by farmers and research workers because of the associated tillage difficulties and low crop yields.
