Energy Analysis Of Small-Scale Ethanol Distillation, Scott Stampe
Energy Analysis Of Small-Scale Ethanol Distillation, Scott Stampe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Steam consumption associated with the small-scale fractional distillation of ethanol at the South Dakota State University Alcohol Fuels Research Facility has been determined. During 1981, seven, ten, and thirteen percent ethanol concentrations in corn-beer were distilled to a 92.5 percent fuel ethanol product. Residual ethanol concentrations in spent stillage were studied at average levels of 0.13, ' 0.15, and 0.30 percent by volume. The total system energy requirement averaged 3.88 rnegajoules per liter (13,900 Btu per gallon) of anhydrous-equivalent ethanol, exclusive of boiler efficiency. Emperical relationships were established between the distillation energy requirement and two operating parameters. These parameters were …

Laboratory Study Of Trail-Tube Irrigation, Mohamed O. Shanna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increasing energy costs, continuing interest in more efficient use of water, and the availability of low-cost plastic tubes initiated the idea of trail tube irrigation. Trail tubes are perforated poly-flex hoses similar to the laterals of a trickle irrigation system. These tubes connected to the main line of a center pivot system can be used to replace sprinklers. The main line of a center pivot system provides the water supply and the mobility. The arrangement of a trail tube irrigation system is similar to a traveling trickle system. Advantages of trail tube irrigation are its low energy consumption and its …

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Reproduction Of Targhee Ewes, Richard D. Rogen
The Effect Of Photoperiod On Reproduction Of Targhee Ewes, Richard D. Rogen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Seasonality of reproduction in sheep has created an oscillating supply of lambs. A more constant supply of lambs would allow more efficient use of facilities and labor by producers, feedlots and packing plants. Seasonal reproduction also limits the lifetime production of the ewe. Extension of the breeding season would provide a more consistent supply of lambs. In addition, more than one lamb crop per ewe could be produced annually. Not only the yearly lamb production but also the lifetime production of the ewe would then be increased. Also, the generation interval would be shortened allowing faster herd improvement. It is …

Protein Supplementation As Related To Protein Sources For Growing And Finishing Lambs, Luis Fernando Palmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The production of high-quality foods continues to offer an important challenge to livestock producers and animal scientists. People in many countries of the world consume diets which are inadequate in quantity and quality of nutrients. The animal industry plays a major role as a supplier of high-quality foods such as meat, milk and eggs for human nutrition. Protein is perhaps the most important nutrient provided by animal products because of its quality and availability in relation to human needs. Ruminants such as cattle and sheep have the unique ability to convert low quality feedstuffs to high quality food as animal …

The soils which occur on the footslopes adjacent to the closed depressions and poorly drained swales often contain calcium carbonates and other soluble salts at or near the surface. An in situ investigation of the morphology and genesis of these calcium carbonate enriched soils was undertaken to determine their genesis and classification. An area in which these soils occur was selected for study and a series of observation wells were installed to monitor the …
Relationship Between Soil Moisture And Soil Surface Temperature, Steven Darwin Ness
Relationship Between Soil Moisture And Soil Surface Temperature, Steven Darwin Ness
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thermal-infrared imagery (thermography) obtained from satellite altitudes has been shown to be a promising new tool for resource management and development. Satellite-borne thermal-infrared sensors allow the collection of time-sequential thermal-infrared radiation (thermal emittance) data over large land surface areas of the earth at relatively low cost. Thus, any resource which can be related to thermal emittance can be readily monitored. Thermal emittance from a surface is proportional to the fourth power of the surface temperature. Thus any factor which affects the surface temperature greatly affects the surface thermal emittance. · Moisture is such a factor when the land surface is …
Nitrogen Fertility Requirements, Dry Matter Production And Nutrient Uptake Of The Sunflower, Robert Andrew Narem
Nitrogen Fertility Requirements, Dry Matter Production And Nutrient Uptake Of The Sunflower, Robert Andrew Narem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) has recently become a major crop in the north-central United States. This is the result of the development of high yielding oilseed hybrids, a steadily expanding export market and the plant's inherent adaptability to severe weather conditions. During the early part of this century research was conducted throughout the nation investigating sunflower's potential for silage. As farmer interest declined, the crop was almost forgotten until the introduction of high oil cultivars from the Soviet Union where sunflower had been grown for oil since the mid-1700's. The discovery of cytoplasmic male sterility and fertility restoration then made …
Plants Poisonous To Livestock In Botswana, Pearl Dijeng Motsepe
Plants Poisonous To Livestock In Botswana, Pearl Dijeng Motsepe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Livestock plant poisoning is very common in Botswana. Two plants, Dichapetalum cymosum and Pavetta harborii, are especially notorious for causing large-scale mortality in some areas of the country. In 1975, for instance, a D. cymosurn poisoning outbreak killed 210 cattle in east central Botswana. In the same year P. harborii caused large-scale deaths of cattle in the Mochudi area. The losses caused alarm among livestock farmers and the problem was among the issues discussed in the 1975 session of the Botswana Parliament. Because of their potency, farmers in South Africa refer to these species as "sudden death 11 plants. Unlike …

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Grain Protein Content And Yield Of Spring Wheat In South Dakota, Syed Dara Tazul Islam
The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Grain Protein Content And Yield Of Spring Wheat In South Dakota, Syed Dara Tazul Islam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has been predicted that the cost of nitrogen fertilizer will soon triple. Consequently, N management by wheat growers in South Dakota will be even more critical than it has been in the past. Nitrogen is one of the most limiting nutrients for wheat production in South Dakota. Many of the spring wheat producers fail to take advantage of nitrogen fertilizer recommendations based on soil testing. Therefore, it is likely that a simple post-harvest method of determining if adequate N was present for wheat crop would be very beneficial to spring wheat producers. One such method is using grain protein …
Adjusting Potential To Actual Evapotranspiration Rates Applicable Over Large Spatial Regions, Leah Jane Horton
Adjusting Potential To Actual Evapotranspiration Rates Applicable Over Large Spatial Regions, Leah Jane Horton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Because of their repetitive flight patterns and broad spatial coverage, satellites hold great promise for supplying the data necessary to predict soil moisture conditions. Already satellite data have been used to predict such input parameters to soil moisture models as solar radiation values and leaf area indices. In addition, surface soil moisture or rainfall events could be detected remotely and used as model inputs. Conceivably, satellite imagery could be used to. predict most, if not all, of the inputs into a soil moisture model. Although the use of satellite data sounds like a timely panacea, there are some inherent questions …

Effect Of Ammonia On Post-Diapause Western Corn Rootworm Eggs And Larvae, Karen Cameron
Effect Of Ammonia On Post-Diapause Western Corn Rootworm Eggs And Larvae, Karen Cameron
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Corn rootworms are the major economic insect pests of corn produced in the Midwest. Economic loss to the grower is through yield reduction caused by larval and adult damage and the cost of insecticidal control measures. Larval damage to corn roots is by tunneling in the roots and damage to the cortical parenchyma. Most of this damage occurs in late June and in early July. Brace root feeding by the larvae can cause the plant to lodge. Adults also damage corn by feeding-on all above ground portions with primary damage to silks and tassels. This feeding disrupts pollination resulting in …
