The Occurrence And Effects Of Entomophaga Grylli On Grasshopper Populations In South Dakota, Roger Allen Bohls
The Occurrence And Effects Of Entomophaga Grylli On Grasshopper Populations In South Dakota, Roger Allen Bohls
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effect of Entomophaga grylli on grasshopper populations within South Dakota was investigated during a 2-year period. Field observations established that the state's 3 most important species of grasshoppers are susceptible to pathotype 2 infections. Outbreaks are believed to be initiated annually from the soil of undisturbed areas which act as the reservior for Entomophaga grylli resting spores. The occurrence of the fungus in regions of the state receiving 355 mm of rain during the growing season indicate pathotype 2 infection is maintained in dry environments. However, detailed epizootiol ogical studies of the fungus are needed before the potential of …

Certification Requirements For Secondary School Classroom Theatre Teachers, Dorothy Begalka
Certification Requirements For Secondary School Classroom Theatre Teachers, Dorothy Begalka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Some of the students who study theatre at the college level intend to enter the field of education. Noting this, the investigator became interested in the field of theatre education. It was assumed that certain certification requirements would have to be met in order to teach theatre courses in each of the fifty states and the District of Columbia. A resource containing comprehensive data about these requirements would be helpful for college students as they select coursework throughout their college careers. An investigation was made to determine if such a resource had been written which enumerated the certification requirements one …
Educational, Occupational, And Residential Plans Of Youth In South Dakota, Donald E. Arwood
Educational, Occupational, And Residential Plans Of Youth In South Dakota, Donald E. Arwood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When talking about South Dakota youth it has been popular to contend that their future is the future of South Dakota. Furthermore, newspaper reporters, politicians, and others have contended that young men and women would prefer to live in South Dakota, but that economic conditions push them to seek jobs in other states. It has also been proposed that many rural youth, though they would prefer not to, move to urban areas to seek a living. Even with these contentions, little objective research has been done to substantiate that a relationship exists between job seeking and migration for South Dakota …

The Determination Of Lead By Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrocsopy : A Study Of The Molecular Interferences, Ahmed Elsayed Abdelfattah
The Determination Of Lead By Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrocsopy : A Study Of The Molecular Interferences, Ahmed Elsayed Abdelfattah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The presence of interference effects in atomic absorption spectroscopy affects the degree of accuracy that can be obtained. A major source of interference in electrothermal atomization processes appears to involve the formation of molecular species. In the analysis of lead in the presence of chloride, three peaks are observed. The first of these peaks has an absorption spectrum characteristic of lead chloride. The second and third peaks cannot be identified on the basis of their respective spectra. In the presence of nitrate, the analysis of lead results in the presence of a broad band absorption profile that cannot be identified. …
George Herbert : His Method, Salesian Or Protestant, Bruce Aardsma
George Herbert : His Method, Salesian Or Protestant, Bruce Aardsma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In modern times literary criticism has seen a renewed interest in the poetry of the seventeenth century metaphysical poets, commonly referred to as ''the poetry of meditation." Based on the Augustinan philosophy, the act of meditation became a devotional process through which a person could attain a union with the Godhead by following a prescribed method. This method included the stages of purgation, illumination, and unification, through which the meditant first becomes aware of his own sinful nature and hopeless condition and then discovers the way of salvation and commits himself to the service of God. The final stage of …
Performance And Evaluation Of A Variable-Speed Darrieus Wind Turbine, Kasey W. Abbott
Performance And Evaluation Of A Variable-Speed Darrieus Wind Turbine, Kasey W. Abbott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Developing wind energy suitable for agriculture applications is a critical step towards providing a reliable, affordable energy supply for United States agriculture. United States agriculture, due to its energy intensive nature-, is dependent on petroleum fuels. Because agriculture is extremely sensitive, to supply interruptions, steps must be taken to reduce this dependence on oil, including developing wind energy systems. It appears that the potential is there since winds over the United States contain more than 30 times the total energy consumed in this nation (Soderholm, 1979).
Agricultural applications (e.g. irrigation pumping, product processing and building heating) are uniquely suited to …

Assessment Of The Impact Of The European Corn Borer At Three Locations In South Dakota, David R. Raemisch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The European corn borer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) varies as an
economically significant pest in South Dakota from south to north. In
the northern part of the state the European corn borer (ECB) is limited
to one generation per year. In contrast, there are localized sites
along the Missouri River in southern South Dakota which usually
experience a substantial second brood population. Infestation by
either first or second brood ECB occurs at different stages in the
developmental sequence of the corn plant. As such, each brood must be
considered separately when assessing relationships between yield loss
and ECB larval cavities within the …

Response Of Five Corn Inbred Lines To Line Source Irrigation, Terry J. Foley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Corn breeders and farmers have long desired development of cultivars which yield well in stressful environments and have the ability to respond to more favorable environments with increased yields. Breeding programs conducted in the past have had difficulty identifying these types of cultivars. A tool which has shown promise in studying dryland performance and responses to irrigation is the Line Source Sprinkler Irrigation System. This system applies continuously decreasing amounts of irrigation as distance from the line source increases. This investigation was conducted to determine the value of such a system in the study of dryland performance and response to …
Emily Dickinson's Poetry : Abnormality Defined, Izzat Mohammed Ghazzawi
Emily Dickinson's Poetry : Abnormality Defined, Izzat Mohammed Ghazzawi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a romantic poet, Emily Dickinson was fascinated by nature, individualism, man's relation with God and the universe and the other unperceivable problems of love, pain and death. Emerson and Thoreau dwelt on "Transcendentalism” with great enthusiasm; they were absorbed in their pilgrimage into nature and with man's place in this ambiguous universe. Melville's literary interests revealed the tensions that existed in his mind and in the culture at large--tensions set up by the conflict between the will to believe and the need to be shown, between transcendentalism and empiricism in philosophy, between religion and science. Whitman was content with …

Radium-226 Detection By Radon Emanation And Rapid Simultaneous Scintillation Counting Methods, Richard Dean Wittmeier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since its beginning the universe has been contaminated with a host of radioactive isotopes. Of these radioactive isotopes, many have completely decayed away due to their short half-lives. The remaining naturally occurring isotopes are members of long decay chains such as uranium-238, uranium-235 and thorium-232. The natural background radiation in the environment is primarily due to the decay of these remaining isotopes. This background radiation is normally harmless to the existance of life unless concentrated amounts are received. Because of its chemical compatibility with calcium, radioactive radium isotopes are the most health hazardous of all naturally occurring isotopes. Radium chemically …

Genetic Correlations Among Sex-Limited Traits, Michael D. Macneil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Monte Carlo simulation techniques were used to assess the merits of three methods for calculation of the genetic correlation when traits have been measured on half-sibs of each sex. The restricted maximum likelihood, path coefficient and covariance component estimators did not differ significantly in their accuracy. Path coefficient and covariance component methodologies gave nearly unbiased estimators for traits of high heritability. Across both levels of heritability, the restricted maximum likelihood methodology resulted in genetic correlations being estimated with significantly smaller sampling variance than the other methods. Genetic correlations were estimated for age of puberty, weight at puberty, conceptions per service, …
