The Development Of Palestinian Territoriality, Jan Charles Betholf Jan 1983

The Development Of Palestinian Territoriality, Jan Charles Betholf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The land of Palestine has been the object of conflicting claims by numerous peoples and religions for millennia. This small, arid place generally consisting of territory east and west of the Jordan River has been ruled and coveted by Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Each now possesses historical, cultural, and religious attachments to the land. The Jewish claim to Palestine rests on their conquest of the "promised land" in 1451 B. C. E. and their 1500-year occupancy which ended with the Diaspora in 71 A. D. Christian occupation during the crusades and the importance of the land that Jesus walked also …

Ozonation Of A Municipal Surface Water Supply To Reduce Trihalomethane Formation And The Use Of Surrogate Parameters To Predict Trihalomethane Concentrations, Daniel John Graber Jan 1983

Ozonation Of A Municipal Surface Water Supply To Reduce Trihalomethane Formation And The Use Of Surrogate Parameters To Predict Trihalomethane Concentrations, Daniel John Graber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous researchers have shown that THMs are essentially absent in natural waters but are nearly always present in chlorinated water supplies. Furthermore, it is generally agreed that THMs are formed by the reaction of chlorine with organic precursors, particularly humic substances, in the water. Thus, since surface waters typically are higher in organics, surface water supplies are usually higher in halogenated organics. The factors controlling production of THMs during potable water treatment have been investigated for a number of water supplies. Water parameters such as temperature, total organic carbon (TOC) content, pH, color, chlorine demand, turbidity, and water type (surface …

Soil Detection Using Panchromatic And Infrared Films, Bruce O. Kunze Jan 1983

Soil Detection Using Panchromatic And Infrared Films, Bruce O. Kunze

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Efforts have been made in the soil survey program to improve soil mapping quality. Three types of aerial films were tested to determine if tonal differences exist among the three film types either singularly or in combination which would allow discrimination of soil series within a landscape across several land covers. The imagery consisted of panchromatic (600-700 nm), panchromatic (SOQ-700 nm), and black and white infrared (70Q-900 nm). The utility of these film types for discrimination of the components of soil mapping unit complexes was also tested. Differences were detected between films in the accuracy of discriminating soils due to …

Health Knowledge Assessment Of College Freshmen Educated In South Dakota K-12, Nadeen E. Lunde Jan 1983

Health Knowledge Assessment Of College Freshmen Educated In South Dakota K-12, Nadeen E. Lunde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nothing in life is so taken for granted when possessed, or so missed when lost, as is health. Therefore, it is essential to possess basic facts if each individual is to take advantage of medical science advances, protect himself against quackery, and obtain an optimum level of health. Health education is recognized by leading educators as of vital importance in educating our youth, but health education has not established itself in a way comparable to other subjects. Kilander noted this fact as early as 1937, and yet, 46 years later, South Dakota's health education programs have not been established. Many …

A Comparison Of Herbicides For Postemergence Grass Control In Soybeans, Brian C. Laube Jan 1983

A Comparison Of Herbicides For Postemergence Grass Control In Soybeans, Brian C. Laube

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

No-till and minimum tillage agriculture limits preplant incorporated herbicides and cultivation for weed control in soybeans. Furthermore, reduced tillage leaves crop residue on the soil surface, thereby al so limiting the effectiveness of many preemergence herbicides. A reduced tillage system with the utilization of postemergence weed control practices may reduce soil erosion and production costs while increasing weed control, water infiltration, moisture conservation, and crop yields. Postemergence herbicides are less affected by soil type and moisture than soil applied herbicides. However, the effectiveness of postemergence herbicides may be reduced when rain occurs too soon after treatment. Quackgrass [Agropyron repens (L.) …

Soybean Root Growth And Water Uptake, V. Rasiah Jan 1983

Soybean Root Growth And Water Uptake, V. Rasiah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rainfall is usually marginal for optimum crop production in the North Central Great Plains. As a result many farmers in this region are installing irrigation systems to supplement rainfall. The most common system installed is the center pivot. However, while this system has a low labor requirement it is costly. Economic reports from South Dakota State University indicate marginal to negative comparisons of irrigated crop production to dryland production. Sprinkler irrigation systems such as side roll, tow lines, hand move, side move with trail lines etc. and surface irrigation depend on root zone soil water storage to extend intervals between …

Doodles On The Walls Of The Cave : An Interpretation Of Four Popular Novels, Carole Krysan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are many possible influences which shape the culture or the way of life of a society. One of the strongest of these influences has been the movies. Movies and moviegoing have been a part of American culture for more than eighty-five years, but the movies as a way of life in America perhaps reached its peak in the period from 1945-1955. This was the post World War II era when there were as many as 90,000,000 paid admissions per week from a population of 150,000,000. By the end of this decade, attendance had dropped to 42,000,000 due mainly to …

Vitamin A And Carotene Supplementation On Feedlot Lambs, Donald F. Samuel Jan 1983

Vitamin A And Carotene Supplementation On Feedlot Lambs, Donald F. Samuel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After the discovery and identification of vitamin A as an essential nutrient, the role of the vitamin and its precursor carotene in the nutrition of animals came under widespread study. Many experiments have been designed in the past to examine the interrelationships concerning vitamin A and carotene in animal feeding. In view of the similarity of digestive systems between cattle and sheep, it was reasonable to assume that vitamin A and carotene might function much the same in the two species. As numerous investigators have demonstrated, there are many similarities in vitamin A metabolism between cattle and sheep. However, there …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 15-20 x 1010 tons of organic plant substance is produced on earth per annum. Half of this material is cellulose. Much of this cellulosic material is highly resistant to breakdown due to other plant components such as lignin and hemicellulose which together with the cellulose contribute to the structural integrity of the plants. Thus, these materials find relatively limited uses in comparison to their abundance. Cellulosic materials are utilized by ruminants as an energy source and in lumber and pulping applications but commercial cellulose processing to produce glucose or glucose derived products is not currently performed. The abundance of …

Ozonation Of A Municipal Groundwater Supply To Reduce Iron And Manganese, Steven Lance Schjodt Jan 1983

Ozonation Of A Municipal Groundwater Supply To Reduce Iron And Manganese, Steven Lance Schjodt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Groundwaters often contain considerable amounts of carbon dioxide and under anaerobic conditions, the ferric and manganic compounds are reduced by the slightly acidic water to their soluble ferrous and manganous states, and solution occurs without difficulty. The development of anaerobic conditions is essential for appreciable amounts of iron and manganese to gain entrance to a water supply. For this reason, groundwaters usually contain much higher concentrations of iron and manganese than do surface waters. An oxidation process is the best method for removing soluble iron and manganese. During an oxidation process, the soluble ferrous (Fe+2) and manganous (Mn+2) compounds will …

A Case Study In Establishing An In-House Polling Operation For A South Dakota Political Campaign, Jeff Brockelsby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Evaluating what voters are thinking and deciding how best to communicate with them are critical to a political candidate planning a campaign strategy. Until recently, a candidate relied on his own instincts and those of his advisers to evaluate what people thought about a particular issue or person and to determine the most effective way of presenting campaign messages. Political polling has changed this. Political scientist Paul Van Riper said in Handbook of Practical Politics "the rapidly increasing utilization of social science techniques to help determine political strategy is one of the most important of the recent trends in American …

Perceptual Regions Of Minnesota, John L. Faundeen Jan 1983

Perceptual Regions Of Minnesota, John L. Faundeen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Economists, demographers, politicians, recreationalists, and others have divided the state of Minnesota into many different regions. In so doing, each claim to represent a meaningful division of state districts based upon their own particular viewpoint, need, or bias. Whether these regions are logically derived or merely delineated for purposes of convenience can, however, be questioned. Regardless of how the divisions carne about, they do, to a degree, represent an abstraction of space. Whether or not the average Minnesotan agrees with, or can even relate to, such abstractions is debatable. The way in which residents perceive the state and mentally delineate …
