Economic Effects Of Rural Water Systems On Agricultural Production And Productivity In Selected Counties In South Dakota, Robert Edward Green Jr.
Economic Effects Of Rural Water Systems On Agricultural Production And Productivity In Selected Counties In South Dakota, Robert Edward Green Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Insufficient quantity and quality of water in South Dakota are two reasons rural residents have been turning toward rural water systems to meet their water needs. The first large rural water system was organized in 1962 to serve 700 rural residents near Rapid City. From 1962 to 1970 the growth of rural water systems in South Dakota was slow with only nine systems in operation as of 1970. Currently, the total capital investment for a large system averages $4.5 million. This amounts to an investment of $4,700 per hookup and an average monthly user charge that would exceed $20 if …
The Effect Of Varying Dietary Selenium Levels, Selenium Source And Dietary Composition On Growing Swine, Terry B. Goehring
The Effect Of Varying Dietary Selenium Levels, Selenium Source And Dietary Composition On Growing Swine, Terry B. Goehring
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the early 1900's, many stockmen in the western Great Plains suffered huge economic losses due to poisoning of their livestock through consumption of seleniferous plant material. Some were forced to discontinue raising livestock entirely and turned to grain farming. However, grain produced on land high in selenium was discounted on the market. Today, this grain marketing problem does not exist to the extent of that of the early 1900's. Selenium has more recently been recognized as an essential micronutrient for several species including swine. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved sodium selenite and sodium selenate as supplements …

Replication Of Bovine Parainfluenza-3 Virus In Bovine Alveolar Macrophages : Effects On Phagocytosis And Phagosome-Lysosome Fusion, Richard Allen Hesse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bovine parainfluenza-3 virus was found to replicate in alveolar macrophages in vitro. Cytopathic changes include spindle cell and giant cell formation, cellular detachment, and diffuse cell lysis progressing to total destruction of the monolayer. Direct immunofluorescent microscopy demonstrated viral antigens in greater than 90% of the cells three days after virus inoculation. Virus titers in culture supernatants increased by 6 a factor of 1.6 X 10 TCID50 by six days post inoculation. Phagocytosis assays showed no statistical differences of glass adherent cells in virus infected and control macrophages. When the number of glass adherent cells available for assay are taken …
Rhetorical Theory In Homiletics Training At The St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Seminary, Laurie L. Haleta
Rhetorical Theory In Homiletics Training At The St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Seminary, Laurie L. Haleta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study of Eastern Orthodox rhetorical training of the clergy has been somewhat confined, due in part, to the broad distribution of the Orthodox faith which includes Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, and Ukrainian Orthodox. The limited scope of research appears to justify further investigation of rhetorical· training offered to clergy of specific denominations. Therefore, a study of the rhetorical components in the homiletic training offered Ukrainian Orthodox clergy seems warranted. In undertaking this study, the investigator was motivated in part by her father-in-law, Bishop Mykola Haleta, who is a priest in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Exposure to the Ukrainian Orthodox …
The Adjustment Of Foreign Students At Sdsu, Mansour Haghighatian
The Adjustment Of Foreign Students At Sdsu, Mansour Haghighatian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A visible and significant subset of the student body of many U.S. institutions of higher education is its foreign student population. These students come from a wide variety of cultures and as Skinner & Hendricks have put it, "Despite the variety of views of foreign students Americans may have, Americans have a common feeling that the foreign student is somehow different, a 'they' and not a 'we' ". The foreign student is different because he/she is from culture that has different values, traditions and different codes of behavior and guides for conduct. Meleis asserts that ''whereas American business-people need know …

Significant changes in chlorophyll a were tested for in all experiments; algal cell count changes were tested for in four experiments. 250-ml glass flasks were used in laboratory experiments, and partially submerged 5-gallon semitransparent polyethylene containers were used in lake experiments. Experiment duration was 5-12 days. Four …
The Chinese Radio And Television Stations In The United States : A Historical Exploration, Lin Liang
The Chinese Radio And Television Stations In The United States : A Historical Exploration, Lin Liang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Historically, Chinese immigration to the United States began in around 1850, even though immigration statistics in the United States showed that forty Chinese had arrived before the news reached Hong Kong that gold had been discovered in California in the spring of 1848. As the gold rush tapered off in the early 1860s, the Chinese soon filled in as general laborers, domestic servants, cooks, and gardeners. However, they found opposition from the white laborers in the mining camps as early as 1852, and they were denied eligibility for citizenship. The need to be aided and protected was great. All of …

However, the use of solar energy as an alternate energy source for agricultural applications has been restricted, largely by system costs. …
Environmental Factors Influencing The Degradation Of Carbofuran, Douglas E. Raynie
Environmental Factors Influencing The Degradation Of Carbofuran, Douglas E. Raynie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As society places a greater emphasis on agricultural production, knowledge of the wise use of farm chemicals becomes increasingly important. Armed with reduced tillage, crop rotation options, remotely sensed data, and other developing technologies, the agriculturalist must have the capacity to properly apply supportive chemicals. Among these chemicals are the pesticides. Thorough knowledge of the breakdown, particularly biologically based degradation, of effective pesticides is lacking in many cases. Carbofuran is a common broad spectrum carbamate insecticide. Because of its wide use there has been a considerable amount of study on the chemical, microbial, and physical factors affecting degradation. Due to …

Suitability Of Selected Organisms For Monitoring Leachate At A Refuse Disposal Site, John Nathan True
Suitability Of Selected Organisms For Monitoring Leachate At A Refuse Disposal Site, John Nathan True
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
If a landfill is improperly managed or improperly located, contamination of the ground water is possible. Once contaminated, the polluted ground water can travel for great distances with little dispersal or interaction with the soil. Once the ground water is polluted it is very costly, if even possible, to alleviate the problem. Over fifty percent of the people in the United States use ground water as a source for drinking water. With landfills located throughout the U.S. and with over one half of the population drinking ground water, it is not hard to visualize the pollution potential from an improperly …
Demographic Correlations With Exercise Of Self-Care Agency In Women, Susan Marie Hubka Todd
Demographic Correlations With Exercise Of Self-Care Agency In Women, Susan Marie Hubka Todd
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The particular health needs of women have not been addressed by health care professionals. There are three reasons for this: first, only the reproductive functions of women are thought to be particularly female health problems, thus producing a severely limited scope of study on women; secondly, all other health problems are measured in terms of normal adult functioning, those norms having been set by research on adult male normalcy or pathology; and lastly, what studies have been individualized to women have been done on women only in illness situations. Dunbar et al illustrated in their comprehensive, nursing literature search the …

The Inventional Components Of Emil Loriks' Agrarian Farmers Union Rhetoric, 1934-1938, Elizabeth Everson Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is precedent in the speech discipline for rhetorical studies of individual communicators. National political leaders have long been the topic of rhetorical study. The purpose of this inquiry is to determine the effectiveness and effect of Emil Loriks' agrarian Farmers Union rhetoric from 1934 to 1938, during the time he was SDFU president. Effectiveness is here defined as how well the persuader's rhetorical choices match established rhetorical criteria. Effect refers to both the immediate and long-range response to rhetoric. To accomplish the stated purpose, an attempt was made to answer the following questions: 1. What was the historical, economic …

An Examination Of Prostaglandins As Causative Agents In Pine Needle (Pinus Ponderosa) Abortion, Daniel P. Shue
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cow and calf losses due to pine needle abortion in cattle grazing foothill ranges of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) continue to cause managerial and economic problems for ranchers in South Dakota, Colorado, Idaho, California, Montana and many areas throughout Canada. Because of its overall economic significance, investigators have been attempting to isolate and characterize causative agents of pine needle abortion. To date, a large number of pine needle constituents have been shown to possess abortifacient capabilities. In addition to actual pine needles, it appears that several other undefined factors may be associated with, and (or) predispose animals to, pine needle …
