The water supply for the City of Brookings is treated by water treatment plants located on the north and on the east side of town. The east water treatment plant is supplied by three wells and has a maximum design capacity of 4 mgd (15,140 m3/day). Designed for iron and manganese removal, partial softening, stability control, and disinfection, the plant includes the following processes: aeration, lime softening, alum coagulation, recarbonation, potassium permanganate oxidation, polyphosphate treatment, filtration, chlorination, and fluoridation. The east plant is producing a stable water based on the Langlier Saturation Index. USPHS recommended limitations for iron and manganese …

The purpose of this study was to determine the extensiveness and the effectiveness of inductive support and deductive reasoning revealed in selected "Three Principles of the People" speeches made by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924. Extensiveness, in this study, was mainly concerned with quantitative measurement how much inductive support and deductive reasoning had been employed within each selected speech. Effectiveness, on the other hand, called for a qualitative judgment--how well or how effectively the inductive support and the deductive reasoning within the speeches had matched the established criteria. The problem was to determine whether a significant relationship existed among the present positions, career goals, and results of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator using selected college and university personnel administrators in the Southern Region of the College and University Personnel Association (CUPA). Literature was reviewed in order to determine the previous research of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as it applies to college and university personnel administrators. The purpose of this study was to determine the status of general education and occupational program articulation efforts and practices as they existed between community colleges and the public secondary and vocational schools in Virginia. The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in an experiential based instructional program for exploring vocations in emerging and new technologies would enable academically able high school juniors and seniors to attain increased maturity of attitudes and competency in career decision-making skills as measured by the Career Maturity Inventory. A total of 64 students participated in the study. Participants came from a pool of 132 junior and senior high school students identified as having a grade point average that placed them in the top thirty percent of their class. The purpose of this study was to analyze teacher evaluation instruments in use in Tennessee public school systems relative to type of instrument and content in relation to six school system characteristics. Differences were sought between school systems in relation to participation in teacher contract negotiations, per pupil expenditure, average annual teacher salary, method of selection of superintendents, type of school system, and size of school system in their choice of type of instrument and in the content of their instruments. Since approximately February of 1979, the Speed School impulse clock system has not functioned due to a worn-out master clock that was never replaced because of a lack of fund. For this thesis project, a solid-state master clock that performs the same functions as the old mechanical master clock was built for less than $200. The new clock features accuracy traceable to the National Bureau of Standards, automatic reset after a power-down and subsequent power-up, and a daylight savings time provision. The purpose of the study was to (1) compare the performance on left and right hemisphere processing tasks of male and female kindergarten students from three instructional approaches, and (2) to determine the effectiveness of an educational application: the use of "hands-on" inquiry-oriented science activities designed to engage the right hemisphere in improving left and right hemisphere processing. Subjects included 79 students enrolled in intact kindergarten classes representative of three instructional approaches: (1) the Traditional-Conventional Instructional Approach, (2) the Montessori Approach, and (3) the Open Activity-Centered Instructional Approach. The purpose of this study was to determine whether students' evaluation of faculty was affected by their perception of the utilization of the evaluation results. Three other variables were also investigated: faculty status, subject area of the class, and sex of the instructor. Data for this study were collected from twenty classes taught by ten instructors at a private post-secondary institution in East Tennessee. Both instructors and their classes were randomly selected. To examine the role of bird species (other than Anatidae) in the prairie wetlands ecosystem. Seven wetlands on Waterfowl Production Areas in eastern South Dakota were utilized to measure differences between bird communities in plots with dug brood complexes and non-modified plots. Thirty-eight species of wetland birds were recorded on wetlands during June 1981 and June 1982. The most abundant species included the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), marsh wren (Cistothorus palustris), and song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). A radio telemetry study of sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) summering at the Test Reactor Area (TRA) on the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) in southeastern Idaho was initiated in July 1980. Objectives included determination of habitat use, home range, brood breakup, fall movements, and harvest of sage grouse using the TRA. Supplemental habitat data and fall movement data were collected from sage grouse summering at the Central Facilities Area (CFA) on the INEL in 1982. Seasonal precipitation appeared to influence the period of use of the TRA by sage grouse. Grouse arrived later and left earlier in the wet year …

A recreational use survey was conducted at 6 public wetlands in eastern South Dakota from August 9, 1981 through August 8, 1982. Four hundred and fifty-eight postcard questionnaires were placed on vehicles encountered at these marshes during random time periods. Two hundred and thirty-five were voluntarily returned for a response rate of 51.3%. Approximately 10, 020 people made 4,778 trips to these wetlands and spent 63, 093 man-hours. Thirty-one different activities were observed or reported. Hunting accounted for 96.0% of all fall trips and 89.1% of yearly visits. Over 89% of all visits occurred during fall and over 50% of …

Plant preference of yearling hybrids (Hypophthlmichthys nobilis X Ctenopharyngodon idella) was examined under control conditions at the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery, Yankton, South Dakota and under field conditions in two stockwater impoundments in south-central South Dakota. IN feeding trials, conducted in a 0.07 ha hatchery pond, hybrid grass carp selected Najas guadalupensis, Chara sp. and Potamogeton pectinuatus. Ceratophyllum demersum and Myriophyllum spicatum were not consumed. Under field conditions N. guadalupensis also appeared to be preferred while C. demersum was not. Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) reared in 1 m³ cages in a South Dakota dugout pond grew and survived as well or better than most cage-cultured rainbow trout reported in the literature. Significant differences (P≤0.01) in mean length, weight, and food conversion, and similarity in relative weight between trout fed 2 and 4% of body weight daily, indicated that the optimum feeding rate was near 3% for this size range (35=100g). Daily rations based on fish size and water temperature need to be developed for trout reared in a lentic environment. The high cost of fingerlings was the limiting factor in …

Modification of wetlands has been a frequently employed management technique to enhance habitat for waterfowl and other wetland wildlife. One type of excavation in wetland basins is the dug brood complex; an interconnected system of pond units, channels, and islands, primarily created to provide waterfowl brood rearing habitat during drought. In 1981-82, a study was conducted to evaluate waterfowl pair and brood use of 8 pairs of Class IV wetlands in east-central South Dakota. Thirty Holstein cows were utilized in a lactation trial evaluating diets containing whole-rolled sunflower seeds. Cows were randomly assigned to treatments, grouped according to previous milk production and lactation number. The cows were fed one of three diets: 1) the control was a com-soybean meal mix (CSM), 2) com-soybean meal mix plus 22% whole-rolled sunflower seeds, and 3) a corn-soybean meal mix with 22% whole-rolled sunflower seeds with an additional 3.5% limestone over SCS (SCL). In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of sunflower hulls (SFH) treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH), and potassium hydroxide (KOH) at increasing levels were studied. Tested concentrations of each alkali as percent dry matter (DM) on SFH were 1.63, 2.45, 3.26, and 4. 08. In vitro dry matter digestibility of sunflower hulls increased with higher concentrations of NaOH and KOH. Percent IVDMD for control (un-treated SFH) was 18.0. Percent IVDMD for SFH treated at 1.63, 2.45, 3.26, and 4.08% of DM were: 18.9, 21.4, 22.2, and 22.9 for NaOH; 18.3, 18.0, 18.3, and 18.5 for NH …

Root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp. have long been a problem on vegetable crops in Botswana. Loss of yield and reduction in quality and marketability of vegetable crops such as beet (Beta vulgaris L.) and carrot (Dancus carota L.) have been reported from school and home gardens as well as from commercial gardens in the country (Nilsson, personal communication). Information about alternative marketing methods and prices being paid at alternative markets is not always available. If available, this information could lead to more efficient marketing. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the body composition and body type of 132 NCAA Division II baseball players. In addition, physical characteristics and body composition of subgroups were determined to see if the subgroups had distinct profiles. Body composition was assessed from measures of three skinfolds (chest, abdomen, and thigh) and age, by using the body density equation of Jackson and Pollock and Siri' s percent body fat equation (McArdle, Katch & Katch. Much of the food production in the world today depends on the presence of an adequate supply of nitrogen in the soil. Whether farming methods are simple or intense, nitrogen in usually the primary limiting factor in this production.
